Holi ka din hai pyaar karen

Hearty congratulations of Holi to all the riders and readers and raiders and rodeo’ers and re-doers and radars and rudders of this brilliant and breathtaking bandwagon, onwards on its jolly joyous journey of merry musical melodious memories down from the darling decades of the devoted dreamers who verily fashioned this form of art following upon the footsteps of the forerunners of this fantastic heritage that we know as the Hindi film song.

In this land, celebrations means music, and the films, ne’er to be outdone and left behind, have ensured that the festivities are fittingly feted with a bountiful and magnificent measure of the meter and the melody. And the vibrant and colorful festival of Holi in all likelihood, takes the cake for the most musically montaged episode onscreen.

A rare gem is being presented today. The film is from 1947, and the film is ‘Renuka’. The simple words of this lovely song are penned by Qamar Jalaalabaadi, and the music is by Sardar Malik. A lot of chorus singing accompanies three voices that one can make out in this song. And the voices belong to Zohrabai, Sardar Malik himself and an un-credited voice of a child artist or a female artist, that renders just two lines in the song.

Ah, just listen to this unfussy and undemanding creation, and fall in love yet once again with melodies of the Hindi cinema, literally presented in all its colors. Celebrate and enjoy. 😀

holi ka din hai pyaar karen

Ah, come
It’s a day to fall in love
It’s the day of colorful Holi

dhoti par rang uchhaal chuke
choli pe bhi rang daal chuke
aa dil ko bhi rangdaar karen

See, the menfolk are doused with color
And so are soaked in color, the womenfolk too
Come, let us fill the hearts also with color

(NOTE: the menfolk are represented by ‘dhoti’, and the womenfolk by ‘choli’, as the traditional and customary attires).

hai duniya holi khel rahi
devar se bhaabhi khel rahi
choli se pagadi khel rahi
ab kis se holi khelen hum
aur kis se aankhen chaar karen

All the world is playing with colors
The womenfolk play with the menfolk
The mischievous devar not letting go this prospect
Is playing holi with the demure bhabhi
Ah, but with whom shall I play
And with whom shall I lock my glances

(NOTE: ‘Devar’ is the husband’s younger brother; ‘Bhabhi’ is the brother’s wife; traditionally this is a naughty and a playful relationship.)

sajni se saajan khel rahaa
bachpan se bachpan khel rahaa
joban se joban khel rahaa
hum khade akele soch rahe
kis ka daaman rang daar karen

The beloved is playing with her beau
The children are playing amongst themselves
And an opportunity this is
For the young at heart
To freely play together today
Ah, but here I am
Standing alone and wondering
Whose attire may I drench with color today
