Ah yes, a surprise it is. This post is being written, as I am at the home of Khyati ji, in Fountain Valley, California. I reached here just earlier in the evening today, and Khyati ji and her husband, Jagdish Bhai picked me up at the airport. Folks may remember from an earlier exchange, that we had some specific plans for ensuring that we recognize each other, when we would meet for the first time at the airport (since we have never met before). But these plans did not work out, as planned. 🙂 I was supposed to be wearing a black trench coat, felt hat, and dark glasses, and carrying a red rose in my hand. And Khyati ji was supposed to be dressed like. . . well, without any description, I refer to the photograph she had shared in email.
On my side, I ended up with just the dark glasses, despite that it was 10 pm local time. 🙂 The weather was too warm to allow wearing a trench coat and a felt hat, so I had dropped that idea. And the red rose. . . well, I was surely carrying one when I boarded the flight. But on board the plane, I met a very enchanting air hostess, and in a moment of fancy, I presented the red rose to her. (Khyati ji was disappointed, but well, she understood, 🙂 ). And on her side. . . well the explanation given by her was simply that she chickened out, and came to the airport dressed as a normal Indian lady.
The other apprehension, of course, was me getting beat up by the Bhatt family (regulars will recall my faux pas in mistaking Jagdish Bhai’s identity for another person). But surely, the welcome by both of them was very warm and very joyful. Without really getting beat up, I managed to get smiling handshakes and hugs as the welcome exchange. So it was a wonderful relief, as you may understand. 🙂
Khyati ji, and Jagdish Bhai turn out to be as I had expected from my earlier conversations on email and telephone – very friendly, very warm, very homely, and yes, very welcoming, even to the confusion creators like me. Only thing, I don’t know what made me feel earlier that Khyati ji would be wearing glasses, but no she does not.
They have been in the Los Angeles (LA) area for more than twenty five years. As it turns out, in the past, we have lived in the LA area at the same time, but of course, at that time we did not know each other. For lack of anything better, I think Atul ji is to blame. He started this blog just too late. 😀 😀 So yes, it is correct. I was posted in Irvine (also in the LA area) for about 18 months during 1990-92. And in fact, both of them and I attended a nine day long Ram Katha discourse by Shri Morari Bapu, that was held in LA area during the summer of 1991. Of course, without being aware of each other at that time. Ah well, everything happens in good time, as ordained.
The family had just returned from their own travels just the day before. They were in Boston, to attend the graduation ceremony of their eldest son. And yes, for those who are aware, I must add to quench their curiosity. Khyati ji did connect with Greta Memsaab, and went to meet with her at her home. (Further details of this meeting I would request Khyati ji to post).
So although it was late by the time we reached home, and that Jagdish Bhai has a very early start in the morning for his duty at the hospital where he works, the three of us sat together well past 1 am, and talked and talked about so many things. With Khyati ji, one thing I can assure. There is never going to be silence or a dull conversation, when she is around. That is just so much her personality – chirpy, smiling with infectious joy, and always ready for a joke. It is just so much fun, just talking.
And I discovered a film and music connection too. Yashwant Bhatt, a famous singer of the 40s and 50s, who was closely connected with the AIR at Rajkot and Bombay, and has also sung some songs in 9 or 10 films during the 1940s, is the real uncle of Jagdish Bhai. They do not have the complete information of the songs rendered by him, or the recordings, and they are currently making an effort to gather the information and to collect all his songs. Some of the solo songs sung by Yashwant Bhatt are turning out to be very difficult to trace.
Khyati ji and Jagdish Bhai have deep religious and spiritual inclinations and are very close to the Indian culture. They are very active with the local religious activities, specially connected with organizations of Swami Vivekananda ji and Swami Chinmayanand ji. It is a very gratifying experience to be in their household, and feel the Indian-ness in the family.
And one more very important thing. Both husband and wife are very seriously involved with gardening. They have a huge backyard, that is full of a large variety of flowering plants, and also a large variety of vegetables. Khyati ji also manages a small green house in her backyard, where she grows and nurtures many varieties of orchids, as well as some difficult to find rainforest plants. And yes, of course, they also have many plants of tulsi, the genuine Indian variety.
So, besides the common interest in Hindi film and non film music, it turns out that we have a lot more interests in common, especially the religious and spiritual pursuit, the concerns about the culture and social values, the keen interest in gardening – all turn out to make my visit really very fulfilling and very interesting. With only one regret. I planned for being with them for one day, and it already seems that it is going to be too short a stay. Khyati ji wouldn’t let me leave, without promising for making another visit during my next trip to the US, whenever that is.
Trying to search for a song to go along with the mood of today, I pick this one sung by Mukesh, that seems to go well with the mood of meeting with Khyati ji and Jagdish Bhai for the first time. The more I listen to it, the more it seems like a fitting song for today.
Many details about this song are not available. This song is from a film of 1970s, that is not released, and probably did not complete production either. The name of the film is ‘Mauqaa’. The music, thankfully has been recorded. The Geet Kosh lists four songs for this film. However, so far, I have been able to locate only this number. This song used to be played on the radio, but had been out of sight for some time. But now it is available on YouTube. The music is composed by Asit Ganguly, and the lyrics are by Abhilaash. The only other information I have been able to trace is the name of two actors – Nipun Goswami and Shobhnaa. I request other readers to please add any more information if available.
So listen to this endearing sound of Mukesh’s voice, yet once again lending itself to make a special song out of not-so-special song. Enjoy.

How I envy you !
I feel very happy that you have met Khyatiji and her husband,Jagdish Bhai ji.
You are almost acting like an ambassador of this Blog,meeting one after another,the members from far and wide.
Your description of Khyati ji,Jagdish Bhai and their House is so vivid that I felt like being taken around myself to meet them and see their Happy Home.
On this occasion,I have got an Idea. Now that we are heading towards the 10,000 song mark,how about planning a Get-to-gether of all members of this Blog,somewhere to celebrate the event of 10,000 ?
Think about this.

Dear Sudhir,
I had talked to Khyatiben over telephone on a couple of times. I cent percent agree with your observations about her – never a dull moment even on the telephone.
About Yeshwant Bhatt,, I could locate two songs sung by him in the films Veer Ghatotkach (1949) and ‘Jagriti’ (1949). Both the songs are duet. Here are the links :

Really, this is such a heartwarming post.
As it is, both Sudhirji and Khyatiji are extremely interesting and fun-loving personalities. So it is only to be expected that when they meet, the fun will be taken to a completely different level altogether. I can totally believe that one can never get bored in Khyatiji’s company, she has such an infectious and ready sense of humor. 🙂
NA Ansari ka trenchcoat aur felt hat to use hi nahin hua. Aur red rose bhi Khyatiji tak nahin pahuncha. Aur Khyatiji bhi dagaa de gayin – photo mein kuchh aur hi tha. 😉 Chaliye, at least they remembered Ansariji in spirit if they did not replicate his typical style/mannerisms. 🙂
I totally second the idea of a get-together for Atulites. If it can coincide with the 10,000th song, great! Otherwise, koi nahi – the get-together itself will be a milestone in its own right! 🙂

It was truely a great pleasure meeting you and spending few moments with you. Sorry I could not spend more time as my schedule was tight. Next time when you plan to visit us (hopefully soon) let me know in advance so I can keep those days free.
I have a small suggestion for you.
Never give any opinion about a person just after few telephone conversations and one single personal visit. (I am talking about my better half.)
