Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

O meharbaan dekho zara

Posted on: September 2, 2013

Today (2 september 2013) is the birth anniversary of Sadhana, the heart throb of movie goers in 1960s, whose “Sadhana cut” hairstyle was a big craze those days. She had a dream run in 1960s and then she suffered an ailment that forced her to take a break from movies. By the time she came back, the movie world had moved on and had passed her by. That is how it is in the movie world.

Sadhana was seen in a few movies in 1970s too, but most of these movies were movies that were in the making for a long time (from 1960s) and had delayed release in 1970s and in some cases even later.

Here is a song from “Geeta Mera Naam” (1974), which was released relatively earlier as compared to a few of her other delayed movies. This movie was a Laxmi Films Services production. It was directed by Sadhana herself. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Sadhana, Feroz Khan, Agha, Helen, Oscar Unger, Rajendra Nath, Keshtho Mukherjee, Achala Sachdev, Birbal, Jankidas, Ramesh Deo, Junior Mehmood, Ramesh Deo, Murad, Manmohan, Siddhu etc in it.

The song under discussion is one that I had heard quite a few times during its time but I was not aware of the details of the song except the obvious detail that it was sung by Lata. It is only now that I have come to know that this song was from “Geeta Mera Naam” (1974).

The fact that this song is a rail song comes as a surprise to me. The picturisation shows Sadhana closeted with Agha in the guard’s van of a train, with Agha playing the train guard and Sadhana showing her “wounds” to him as an effective way of distracting him. Needless to say, Agha is more than willing to get distracted by her charms.

The train is apparently carrying some valuables that Sadhana and her accomplices are after. Her accomplices follow the train in motorbikes and are seen to try gallently to board the train. It all looks comical when one realises that the train is a narrow guage toy train, the kind that runs in Darjeeling and other such places. One can outrun such a train on one’s feet. In fact, people freely board and alight from such trains while the train is still moving during its journey.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho
ho ho ho

o meharbaan
dekho zaraa
kaisse gairon ne lootaa hai meraa chaman
o meharabaan
dekho zaraa
kaisse gairon ne lootaa hai meraa chaman
kaliyaan massal dee
gunchhon ko todaa
shaakhon pe ek phool bhi toh na chhodaa
iss zulm pe
ye zameen chhupp rahi
aur kuchch bhi naa bolaa ye neelaa gagan
o meharabaan
dekho zaraa
kaisse gairon ne lootaa hai meraa chaman

chaand taaron se bhi pardaa karti thhi main
apne saaye se bhi aap darti thhi main
chaand taaron se bhi pardaa karti thhi main
apne saaye se bhi aap darti thi main
akeli kabhi naa nikli main ghar se
akeli kabhi naa nikli main ghar se
milaayee nazar na kissi ki nazar se
ek pawan ke siwaa
naa kissi ne chhuaa
sone chaandi se ujlaa ye meraa badan
o meharabaan
dekho zaraa
kaisse gairon ne lootaa hai meraa chaman

maine kuchch kho diyaa aur kuchch paa liyaa
jo huaa so huaa dil ko samjhaa liyaa
ginn ginn ke badle duniyaa se loongi
ginn ginn ke badle duniyaa se loongi
dhokhe mile hain dhokhe hi doongi
naaz jiss jiss pe thhaa
lutt gayee woh adaa
ab shraafat kaa maine bhi chhodaa chalan
o o meharabaan
dekho zaraa
kaisse gairon ne lootaa hai meraa chaman

Even in ‘Mere Sapno ki raani’ The large picture window that shows Sharmila in the train is quite different from the window of the train (small one) that is seen in the long shots.

But what to do, we have to always suspend our beliefs while watching Hindi films.

As if we are kids to be shown toy trains
