And so wrote the scribe. . .
“Chori Chori Meri Gali Aana Hai Buraa”
And so, when the emotions of fondness stir the heart, the strumming of these strings is felt all over. A restlessness starts to precipitate, slowly at first. But then is permeates through every nerve and every vein, so much so that it sometimes become difficult to remain still. The compulsions inside compel the person smitten to be up, and maybe pacing, just to let the energy dissipate. Or else, brood and be lost in reverie – of the thoughts of the one who has smitten the heart. The sleep at night is disturbed, the mind wanders to where the beloved may be, or where an earlier meeting may have happened. Being alone seems like a favorite pastime. For in that loneliness is the feeling of the nearness of the other.
The restlessness eventually overcomes all else, and the mind now does not want to stay indoors. It may be a search, it may be a pursuit, or it may simply be a wander. And then the heart in love is out on the street, seeking the other, and simply seeking some succor, some comfort, and maybe, a chance to see the other again, even if it is fleeting glimpse. It is now out in the streets. The matters of the restless heart are seeking some reassurance, some consolation, pacing the street where the other lives, or where the other may frequent at times. Aah, the street where the beloved is – galiyaan saajan ki.
And poet, he got this inspiration of a profound thought, in the streets of love. And this theme became a staple part of a variety of emotions that are associated with the thoughts of beloved. Sometimes, the beloved would invite her beau, to come where she is, saying “Gorey Gorey O Baanke Chhorey, Kabhi Meri Gali Aaya Karo”. At other times she would share with a confidant “Weh Gali Mein Meri Roz Aane Lagey” (‘Bulbul e Punjab’, 1933), or even say “Sajan Aaye Meri Gali Mein Ram Kasam Sharmaa Gayi Mein” (‘Maalan’,1942). Sometimes, in a tapping dance, the message is “Chori Chori Meri Gali Aana Hai Buraa”. And at other times, the emphasis is more stoic and firm – “Hazaar Baar Manaa Kiyaa Meri Gali Na Aa” (‘Nightbird’, 1934). Sometimes it is the
exuberance that calls out – “Mein Chali Mein Chali Dekho Pyaar Ki Gali”. And at other times it is the exuberant relief that sings out “Dilwaale, Ab Teri Gali Tak Aa Pahunche”. Sometimes it is the announcement of “Yeh Shor Hai Gali Gali, Ke Wo Jawaan Ho Chali” (‘Ek Thi Reeta’, 1971). And at others, it is the declaration of “Dhadka, O Dil Dhadka, Guzara Gali Se Meri, Mere Sapnowala Ek Ladka“ (‘Bharosa’, 1963). Sometimes it is mixed cry of despair and frolic that says “Ui Maa Ui Maa Ye Kya Ho Gayaa, Unki Gali Mein Dil Kho Gayaa”. Or sometimes it is the young heart’s first call of love – (“Pukaarta Chalaa Hoon Main, Gali Gali Bahaar Ki”.
Sometimes it is an effort to send a message – “Kaaga Re Jaiyo Piyaa Ki Galiyan Mein” (‘Bombay Mail”, 1935). And at others, it is an endeavor to search “Saajan Saaja Pukaaroon Mein Galiyon Mein”. Sometimes it is the open proclamation of “Aaj Galiyon Mein Teri Aaya Hai Deewaana Tera”. And at other times it is an invitation – “Sapnon Mein Aane Wale, Galiyon Mein Aa Ja Ek Baar…” (‘Hum Ek Hain’, 1946). Sometimes
it is a promise from the depth of the heart – “Duniya Chhoote Par Na Chhoote Teri Gali Ka Pheraa Re” (‘Arsi’, 1947). Or it is a remembrance of comfort that says “Thandi Hawaa Ka Jhonkaa Aaya Teri Gali Se Ho Ke” (‘Daulat’,1949). Sometimes it is the beseeching call to the beloved – “Jis Gali Mein Tera Ghar Na Ho Baalma, Us Gali Se Hamen To Guzarnaa Nahin”. Or at other times it is the sound of a broken heart that says “Teri Galiyon Mein Na Rakhenge Kadam”, or else, it is pained to say “Saajan Ki Galiyaan Chhod Chale”.
Ah this simple two syllable word ‘gali’, and a simple idea it carries within. And the poet’s mind has explored a million flavors through the heart of the lovers. For every song that is sampled in the above list, there is another score that sits waiting for discovery.
‘Hum Matwaale Naujawaan’ is a film from 1961. Given the period to which it belongs, it is not a surprise that this film is flourishing with music. The seven songs of this film have been created by Majrooh Sb and Chitragupt. This fabulous duet is rendered by Rafi Sb and Geeta Dutt. As I checked the
list of actors and singers, it seems unlikely that this song would have been picturized on the lead pair of Suresh and Saeeda Khan. The reason I think so, is because the other main songs in the film have been sung by Mukesh. My intuition says that this song is performed on screen by Agha, and a
female companion who could be either Kammo or Indira Bansal. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to kindly help with this identification.
The construction and the melody of this song is really unique and enchanting. Every stanza has an entwined ending couplet. The gentleman expresses a thought, and the lady picks up the very words, and turns them around into another thought, for such an endearing effect. Listen and enjoy.

Galiyon ka mela laga diya apne….
Well, one notable number missing in the post is ..marna teri gali mein…from Shabab 1954.
Secondly this number….Thandi Hawaa Ka Jhonkaa Aaya Teri Gali Se Ho Ke from ‘Chunariya’,1948…….I am not aware. Is it from this film ???
There is however a very classic …sub kuch lootaya humne aakar teri gali mein… by Rafi saab in the same film…

Thanks for catching the error. The song listed in the write up is not from ‘Chunaria” (1948). This song is from the film ‘Daulat’ (1949). A sampling error at my end as I was compiling the list of songs on this theme, that I could remember.
I will request Atul ji to make the necessary correction to the write up.

I have a list of about 20 themes and accompanying songs, but I am keeping it flexible. There could be more, depending on how things develop, including inputs from friends. 🙂

What a wonderful song Sudhir Ji. Loved it. When I started listening to it, I thought it was a Rafi & Asha duet, but it was the wonderful Geeta Dutt singing. I just found this series running now, and I am really curious to now go check out the previous 5 songs in the series. This theme based playlists is awesome. Thank you so much Sudhir Ji!
