Kaaga mera ek kaam karna

Posted on: October 2, 2013

This article is written by Peevesie’s mom, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Last year on 2nd October I had sent a mail to Atul with the following contents (I am reproducing it partly-I had sent the mail after I saw that there was a song dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.)

“There is one more birthday today, another Gujarati gem (though it is debatable if she is as bright as Mahatma Gandhi.)

So here is a song from the 1979 movie “Prem Vivaah”. This movie had Mithun and Bindiya Goswami as the lead pair. Asha Parekh and Utpal Dutt were the senior Jodi. This movie was directed by Basu Chatterji.

This movie had Bindiya play Asha’a younger sister who is in love with Mithun but she feels it that it is her duty to find a husband for her sister before she gets married and settles abroad with Mithun. with this in mind she goes groom hunting and we have some hilarious scenes with Deven Verma as a candidate etc. then one day she sees her didi engrossed in some TV show wherein a doctor (Utpal Dutt) is being interviewed by Kamleshwar (he was a hit on Doordarshan those days.). She finds that the middle aged doctor is also single and then she sets about trying to bring the two together with a lot of help from her fiancé Mithun.
The songs were written by Anand Bakshi and music was by Laxmi-Pyare. The singer for this song is Lata.

Then I had found only a link for the audio. This I had provided.

At that time I had seen only one song from the movie on YouTube. So to be on time to send Atul the link I restarted my search for the song. I also took tuitions from Peevesie about the site which helps us trim Videos to our preference. Then, today in all earnest, I sat to locate the movie on YouTube so that I can trim it to our requirement. And what do I find!!!!!! Some sweet soul has already done the job for me. I shouted Hurrah!! Half my work was done.

As a kid I had simply loved Asha Parekh in this movie. She looked so elegant. And since this was post “Golmaal”, any movie starring Utpal Dutt was seen and with Basu Chatterji at the helm this movie was really sweet.

Seeing this video reminds me of Utpal Dutt’s dialogue to Dharamendra in “Guddi” and I quote…

Utpal Dutt: aap toh bohot accha gaate hain
Dharamendra: ji main, main toh bohot besura gaata hoon, yeh toh kisi doosre ki awaaz thi
Utpal Dutt: yeh kaise ho sakta hain. Jo aadmi saaz bajana janta ho woh besura nahin hota
Dharamendra: ji yeh piano ki baat kar rahe hain? Yeh toh mujhse bhi besura hain. This is not real professor saab. Yeh toh Dummy hai.
Utpal dutt: ho ho isi liye, aap aur piano toh nazar aa rahe the lekin table kahan se baj rahe hain. Phir socha ke naukar chakar aapka gaana sunkar kitchen se baja rahe hain.

In the song of Prem Vivaah the situation for the following song is that Utpal Dutt is invited to lunch by Bindiya Goswami. And she arranges for things to happen in such a way that when Utpalji is sitting for lunch her sister Asha starts her song. You know Kitchen se Gaana aana kind of thing.;-)

Here is the song.

Song-Kaaga mera ek kaam karna (Prem Vivaah)(1979) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Kaaga aa aa aa
mera ek kaam karna
mera ek kaam karna
kabhi mere preetam kee gali se tu guzarna
mera ek kaam karna
kabhi mere preetam kee gali se tu guzarna
kaaga mera ek kaam karna

main jo kahoon tujh se ae
woh kehna unhen jaake ae
main jo kahoon tujh se ae
woh kehna unhen jaake
woh jo kahen tujh se
woh kehna mujhe aake
jaldi jaana
jaldi aana
unke jawaab pe hai
mujhe jeena marna
kaaga mera ek Kaam Karna

kya kya kehna hai
thehar yaad kar leti hoon
kya kya kehna hai
thehar yaad kar leti hoon
bhool na jaaye tu
main chitthi likh leti hoon
chup hi rehna
kuchh na kehna
unse main darti hoon
tu bhi unse darna aa
kaaga mera ek kaam karna
kabhi mere preetam ke gali se tu guzarna
kaaga aa aa aa
mera ek kaam karna
