The Many Colors of Love #8 – At First Sight
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe
Milte Hi Nazar Tum Se
Hum Ho Gaye Deewaane

A dazzling flash of lightning, and a sudden pause. As the heartbeats rapidly quicken, and the vocal chords freeze for a while. The expressions become immobile, and the activity of thoughts quickly peters down to nothing. The sensations subside, and the world around seems as if to have disappeared. Yes, sometimes it happens so, maybe once in a lifetime (and maybe more, for a fortunate few ;).

It lasts for a few brief moments. As two glances, otherwise normally busy with their usual routine, land on each other, are about to move on, and mostly do, but then the chemistry in the brain signals the nerves to stay. The locked gazes exchange something and all the symptoms noted above get manifest. When the senses return after a while, the somersaulting heart, a dry feeling in the throat, and a still speechless tongue, make for the beginning of that enchanting ailment – that is relished by some, and is regretted by others.

Be sure that the first sighting has occurred. What is going to follow is days of remembering and reliving of this episode, sleepless nights of wanting to experience that same gaze, and the same emotions. The days will be spent in a daze, musing over the rush of feelings that happened, as the heart momentarily rushes into overdrive. The nights will be full of ruminations and the more verbose minds may start lyrical expressions.

Those who have experienced being smitten as such, can never ever disengage that emotional rush from their minds for the rest of their lives. It is an experience which is uniquely the first and last time it happens. And over the centuries, it has prompted the poets to write again and again about this moment – a moment on which apparently the entire energy of existence gets focused. Everything is in the now, and nothing seems to be in the before or after.

Of the many songs from Hindi films that one can list, my favorite is the wonderful “Mere Mehboob Tujhe Meri Mohabbat Ki Kasam” from the film ‘Mere Mehboob’ (1963). The stunningly picturised episode of Anwar (role played by Rajendra Kumar) and Husna (role played by Sadhna), dashing into each other in college walkway. The books fall from her hands, their eyes meet, she is wearing a burqaa, and eyes is the only part of her face that he can see. She bends down to pick up the books, he too stoops down to help her, their gazes lock, they search for books with the hands, their hands meet for a moment, and the pause lasts for a second and one can feel he shiver that would have passed through both of them. The moment is on the screen for less than a minute. And yet, that moment obviously lasted for a lifetime for Anwar. As it did for me – the vision of that scene is one of those memorable episodes in the films that are not erasable from the mind.

And then Shakeel Sb wrote down such sublime verses of unparalleled beauty, that describe the entire love-at-first-sight phenomena.

bhool sakti nahin aankhen woh suhaana manzar
jab tera husn mere ishq se takraaya thha

Never will my mind ever forget
That vision of beautiful stunning wonder
When my feelings of love
Were stirred by your beautiful presence

and then goes on to say

yaad hai mujh ko meri umr ki pehli woh ghadi
teri aankhon se koi jaam piya thha maine
meri rag rag mein koi barq si lehraayee thhi
jab tere marmari haathon ko chhuaa thha maine

I still remember with fondness
The first moment that my life ever was
The moment when I had the first sip from your eyes
A tingling had flashed through every nerve in my being
When my fingers touched your marble soft hands

and then, he goes on to top even that best with another better

dhoondhta hoon tujhe har raah mein har mehfil mein
thhak gaye hain meri majboor tamanna ke kadam

My eyes seek you
Down every pathway
In every gathering
And my helpless longings
Are weary and drained
Searching for you

ek yahi mera ilaaj e gham e tanhaayee hai

O, please come
Face to face
And for a moment
Raise the burqaa
The sight of your face
Is the only remedy
For the grief of my loneliness

For this post, I present a very lively, but a very obscure song from a not so well known film from 1952. This song is from the film ‘Chamkee’. The verses are written by Kavi Pradeep and the music is created by, oh yes, Manna Dey. The singing voices are of Shamshad Begum and chorus.

From the sounds of this song, it appears to be a roadside performer’s fun song. The poet is telling about the delicious flavors of the love at first sight. A feeling that is just like a wondrous flash of lightning. And it takes just a tiny second for the messages of love to get across.

soch samajh kar kheliyo lala tum aankhon ka khel
arre baat baat mein ho jaata hai yahaan dilon ka mel

O listen
Be careful with these playful glances
It is maybe, just a matter of seconds
That the hearts will get entangled

bada mazedaar hota pyaar babu pehli nazar ka
ye mat poochho ke kaisa waar hota pehli nazar ka

Oh the love born from the first glances
Such a sweet fun it is
Just do not ask how it feels
The onslaught of the first sight

jab kisi ki natkhat akhiyaan, chalaati hain teer taq taq

When the naughty glances
Are discharging arrows with abandon
Even the mightiest hearts will beat faster
Ah this first sight love
Is just a wondrous flash of lightning

koi kare meethi meethi batiyaan, koi bheje pyaari pyaari patiyaan

This love
Will keep some awake all night
Some will talk sweet
And some will send letters of affection
But it is the love of first glance
That will deliver the message like a telegram

Listen to this peppy description of the love at first sight. And think about your own memories of such episode. I am sure those memories will still make the heart race against itself. I know, for I have tasted that earth shaking moment, that seems to last a lifetime. And when it ends, the heart simply wants to go back to it, again and again.

Ah, that moment of the first taste of love. . . it is never to be again. Just once in a lifetime. 🙂

Alas my first love was unsuccessful! However, I very much enjoyed reading Sudhir-ji’s intro (I guess he is writing from his experience?) and one and only Shamshad singing as only she can. Shamshad can never be replaced.
