Greetings all, on this auspicious day, as the world celebrates the festival of Christmas.

Today’s date is a busy date as per the anniversaries calendar, with many well known film personalities linked to this date. In this article, I bring together two such persona, who are linked to this date, Naushad and Prem Adib.

Today is the birth anniversary of Naushad Sb, the doyen of music directors of the Hindi film industry. An exceptional artist who has left an indelible impression on the world of film music with his creations. A career that lasted well over six and a half decades, his last film is ‘Taj Mahal – An Eternal Love Story’, released in 2005. Going by the number of films he composed for, the list may not sound impressive – barely about sixty five films to show for sixty five years of work. As to the quality and the beauty of his work – well let me narrate an interesting episode.

I do not clearly recall what the event was, but it was an occasion where Naushad Sb was being honored. It was sometimes in the early to mid 1990s, and a very impressive gathering of folks from the industry. The famous music director Kalyanji (of the music director duo Kalyanji Anandji) rose up to speak. (I will paraphrase.) He said that the industry has been fortunate that a music director like Naushad Sb has been in our midst for the past half century. During this time, he has composed for about sixty films. He continued by saying that he and Anandji had started their film career almost two decades later, and that they have 250 films to their credit. (For a moment, there was a hushed silence – what was Kalyanji driving at by trying to compare the number of films. It did not sound very courteous. Ah, but the next sentence had the entire audience get up for a standing ovation). Kalyanji said something about the numbers being not a good measure. And then he said that he would gladly give up all the songs from his 250 films for being able to compose just one song that Naushad Sb has created. This last sentence left the audience speechless. And there was an applause that lasted for some time.

Naushad Sb has to his credit 3 diamond jubilees, 12 golden and 35 silver jubilees. And when one looks at this number of 50 runaway hits, from a total of 65 films that he composed for – well this one is a success factor that is going to be very hard to match. In a lifetime of a career, his compositions have been sung by KL Saigal and also by Hariharan and Kavitha Krishnamurthy. His song have been performed by Prem Adeeb and Husn Bano at one end of the spectrum, to Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala at the other. A very unique career graph that is without a peer in the industry.

Today is the date that we also remember Prem Adeeb. He passed away this day in 1959, at an exceptionally young age of 42.

Prem Adeeb, the Ram of the silver screen, became so popular with that role that even some temples constructed in that era have statues of Lord Ram that have been carved with his facial image. His popularity as Ram became so intense, that people would come to see him or invite him to their homes simply as an auspicious gesture. Realizing this, he started telling people not to look upon him as such, because it amounts to an insult of revered deity. But this appeal made no difference to the people.

Prem Narayan was born on 10th August, 1917 in Sultanpur in the erstwhile state of Awadh (in present day Uttar Pradesh). He was born into a family of Kashmiri Brahmins. One of his ancestors had been given the title of ‘Adib’ – the learned one, by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the ruler of Awadh from 1847 to 1856 and a very loving patron of art and culture. From that time, the family carried the title “Adib” as their surname.

Prem Narayan’s case is also one of being bitten by the film bug. His passion for being in films became so intense that in 1934, at the age of 17, he dropped his college studies and left home in search of a film career. He first went to Calcutta, then to Lahore, but the lady luck smiled on him only in Bombay. ‘Romantic India’ (1934) was his debut film directed by Mohan Sinha (father of Vidya Sinha), in which he played a small role. (Interesting side note – this is also the debut film of another Kashmiri young man, OK Dar, better known to the audiences as Jeevan.)

In early 1940s, Prem Adeeb joined Prakash Pictures, which was headed by Shankar Bhatt and Vijay Bhatt. His association with Prakash Pictures brought him the role of Ram in films like ‘Bharat Milap’ (1942) and ‘Ram Raajya’ (1943). The success of these films put the stamp of the Ram persona on him once and for all. He continued to do many other roles also, but he was never able to shed this image.

Prem Adeeb appeared in more than sixty five films in a career that lasted two and a half decades, from 1934 to his unexpected passing away in 1959. Two of his films were released in 1960.

There are three films that bring together Naushad Sb and Prem Adeeb –‘Darshan’ (1941), ‘Sation Master’ (1942) and ‘Anokhi Ada’ (1948). This song is from the film ‘Station Master’. This film from Prakash Pictures is directed by CM Luhar. The main cast of actors includes Jagdish Sethi, Prem Adeeb, Ratnamala, Jeevan, Umakant, Kaushalya, Shakir, Ameerbai, Suraiya, Gulab, Pratima Devi. The twelve songs of this film are written by four poets – PL Santoshi, Pt Indra, Buta Ram Sharma and Chaturvedi. This song is from the pen of Buta Ram Sharma. Music is by Naushad Sb. The song has been rendered by Prem Adeeb, and it has also been performed on screen by himself.

A melancholic ghazal of sadness and loss in love, the words are simply exquisite. With this song, we can add one more name to the list of singers of that era who would be so greatly influenced by the style of Saigal Sb. The singing style has that unmistakable imprint.

is pyaar ne raahat se begaana banaa daala
armaan bhare dil ko veeraana banaa daala

Ah this love,
It has made me
An alien to the feelings of peace and comfort
And turned my heart full of longings
Into a barren desert

kis haal mein rehta hoon ab unki balaa jaane
deewaana banaana tha deewaana banaa daala

My circumstances, my life
It matters no more to her
Robbing me of my senses, was the purpose
Robbed me of my sanity
So was it done

maaloom to ho jaata kya dard judaai hai
kyun unko bhi ulfat ne mujh sa na banaa daala

Oh wish
That love would have made her like me
She would have then realized
What the pain of separation is

kismet ne zia de di us shamma ki auron ko
jalne ke liye mujh sa parwaana banaa daala

Fate handed to others
The glimmer of the light
Left me just to be the wasp
And burning my only destiny
(NOTE: zia = light, glimmer)

Song-Is pyaar ne raahat se begaana bana daala (Station Master)(1942) Singer-Prem Adeeb, Lyrics-Butaram Sharma, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

is pyaar ne raahat se
haan is pyaar ne raahat se
begaana banaa daala
armaan bhare dil ko
veeraana banaa daala
armaan bhare dil ko

kis haal mein rehta hoon
ab unki balaa jaane
ae ae
deewaana banaana thha
deewaana banaana thha
deewaana banaa daala
deewaana banaana thha
deewaana banaa daala
is pyaar ne raahat se

maaloom to ho jaata
kya dard judaai hai
haan
haan haan
kyun unko bhi ulfat ne
mujh sa na banaa daala
kyun unko bhi ulfat ne

kismet ne zia de di
haan haan haan
us shamma ki auron ko
haaan
jalne ke liye mujh sa
parwaana banaa daala
jalne ke liye mujh sa
parwaana banaa daala
parwaana banaa daala
is pyaar ne raahat se
begaana banaa daala
is pyaar ne raahat se

Sudhir ji,
Many Thanks.

In most of the films, there are always a couple of songs which can be considered as “not melodious” compared to other hits in them.

But in the case of films that Naushad scored, its almost impossible to identify “not-so-good” songs. And he did it repeatedly for so many films. The jubilees data you have mentioned are testimony to this fact as music was the USP.

Eagerly waiting for the Mukesh series to continue after a short hiatus..

Regards.
