Raag Maalikaa in Hindi Films – 2
=====================
This Composition of the 1981 film ‘Umrao Jaan’ is the second presentation in the series. Produced and directed by Muzaffar Ali, the film had the star cast of Rekha, Farooq Sheikh, Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, Prema Narayan, Deena Pathak etc.

This is a Guru-Shishya style Raag Maalaa, where Guru Bharat Bhushan with the voice of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan teaches two young disciples with the voices of Shahida and Runa Prasad. Music is set by ‘Khaiyyam Saheb’ and the ragas used in the compositions are Bhairav/Ramkali, Todi, Shuddha Sarang, Kafi, Yaaman Kalyan, Malkauns and Bhairavi.

During years of training the disciples are shown in this video, to blossom in to Rekha and Prema Narayan. They can be also seen getting mastery in ‘Katthak’ style of dancing, which was mandatory for their willingly or unwillingly adopted profession.

According to a reliable source, I came to know that music for the film, was to be composed by Jaidev and he had already recorded few songs with the voice of Madhurani-ji. Due to some serious difference of opinions over that, Jaidev tore off the contract and Khaiyyam was entrusted to give the music. Khaiyyam, of course, did give superb music for the film and the film became a real musical hit. In my personal opinion, Khaiyyam is the only one among the old generation Music Directors who continued to give ‘class’ music, even in eighties.

Shahida and Runa Prasad are totally new voices, not heard in other films. (Please correct me if I am wrong). Ustad Ghula Mustafa Khan too, has rarely sung for films. The only other song by him, that I can remember is ‘Sajanaa kaahe naahi aaye’ in Prem Kapoor’s film ‘Badnaam Basti’, where I was involved as a still photographer and location sound recordist, during my brief stint with the film industry. The Music Director for that film was Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao.

With that much brief introduction enjoy this presentation and look forward for more in the series.

They don’t compose music like this any more!!

Bharat-ji, you wrote that you were briefly associated with the Hindi film industry. Can you write more on that?

Sheshadri-ji,
Thanks for taking interest about me.
After finishing the course in Sound Engineering from Xavier’s, I joined as an apprentice with Bombay film lab with meager Rs 30 pm. I refused to accept it in the beginning but that is another long story. Anyway Seth-ji of the lab gave me soon a free hand to work in any department. I worked as an assistant for brief period in many dept including cinematography, Jaikishan’s music studio, editng and b/w film processing. I joined Filmcenter, India’s first color lab, in color processing department. After six months of my working there it was terminated due to worker’s strike. This jack of all trade training helped me in making scientific films and later videos for Tata Institute where I worked for 40 years.
Enough to bore you?
