RaagaMalas in Hindi Films
====================

This is a unique RaagaMaalika composed and ably written by music director Ravindra Jain. I have no words to describe the greatness of Ravindra Jain in his excellence to create this truly very different type of composition. His selection of singer Yesudas for this very difficult heavy classical genre is also very very appropriate.

The music scale from Sa to Ni (swars) are arranged in steps of increasing frequency notes. Each classical raga has in its structure particular notes in ascending and descending order. The lyrics of this song, is very interesting, as it explains the construction of various ragas when ‘Shadaj’ (Sa) is replaced by another swar in the scale. Because no lyricist or poet, unless he has mastery in classical music himself, could have written this typical song based fully on the grammar of ragas, it is written by Ravindra Jain himself. Each raga described by those couplets is like a ‘Lakshan geet’ of that raga. All this is based on our ancient ‘Murchhana’ system and my Bade Guruji Sangeetmartand Pandit Jasraj-ji has developed a unique ‘Jasrangi jugalbandi’, suitable for male female duet, where two vocalist will sing different ragas using same notes (swaras) in the scale, but with different base Sa.

The film ‘Tansen’ being an unreleased film, we do not know on whom this RaagaMalika is picturised. But obviously this must be on Tansen himself. Only three songs, this RaagaMaalika, one solo by Lata and a duet by Lata-Rafi were recorded. For quite a long time this RaagaMaalika had surfaced in a much abridged version. I thank for my source Dr. R C Mishra, who described this full 13 minute melody in his blog ‘Life and Music’.

The ‘mukhada’ of this ragmala ‘shadaj ne paya yeh vardan’ is composed in raga Kafi. Then comes the seven ragas, with ‘Sa’ at different notes on the scale, namely: Bilawal, Kafi, Bhairavi, Yaman kalyan, Khamaaj, Asawari and Bahar. After that the part ‘suno gunijan’ is in raga Sohini and ‘Tansen ki taan’ in raga Darbari. The concluding part of Tarana is composed in ragas Megh and Kafi.

I confess, the bols of ‘Sargams’ and ‘Tarana’ are beyond my capacity to write them down as lyrics. I have put them in colour and bracketed them.

Song-Shadaj Ne Paayaa Yeh Vardaan (Tansen) (1980)(UR) Singer- Yesudas, Lyrics- Ravindra Jain, MD – Ravindra Jain

Excellent Upload!! Congratulations.

Sir,
mujhe shastriya sangeet ka gyaan to nahin hain. par mujhe ye sab gaane bahot hi sukun pahunchate hain aur ek aloukik anand dete hain. isiliye aap ke sabhi post aur gaane mujhe bahut bahut bhaate hain !!
main chhota hoon isliye ‘shukriya’ keh nahin sakta, bas ye hi kahunga ke aise hi aap apne ‘aashirwaad’ ham par barsaate rahiye !!

Bharatji,

Last 19 was your 81st birthday.I was searching an opportunity to greet you,and here it is. Generally you receive gifts on a birthday. We celebrate your birthday by giving heartful THANKS to you.
Most of us are younger and cannot offer AASHIRWAD as it is not the tradition. But we pray God for you for health and other good things.
Again best wishes and thanks !

D Samant

Bharatbhai,
That was great stuff. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Happy Birthday. BTW Bharatbahi does not like to be enquired about his health. He may counter you with ‘whatever happen to me’!!! Thats the spirit.
He devotes his full time to the HFM. Gathering and disseminating vintage songs and classical music. He is trained classical singer under his Guru who is the disciple of Jasraj staying at Houston. He has to his credit number of songs uploaded on UTube. If you talk to him on phone you feel a young voice at the other end.

Dear SIr,
I have noted the following 2 points in your article.

1, The article mentions ‘suno gunijan’ is in raga Sohini. Kindly re-check, because the tune has got Komal Dhaivat. As per my knowledge, Sohini does not have Komal dhaivat. I think it is some other raag.

2. Also the raag immediately after Asawari doesn’t seem to be Bahar
(This line : ni ni ni..jab ni sa bani, do do madhyam par nahin pancham)

I sing Karnatak music, but I’m interested in knowing the corresponding raags in Hindustani music.

Would appreciate if you could re-check and let me know.

Regards,
Ram

Hi Ram, I too had similar observations. The raag immediately after Asawari is technically un-named I think 🙂 Only the notes are sung to indicate the sequence which involves 2 Madhyam and no Pancham, which traditionally doesn’t correspond to any raaga. But when he says Pancham, the note lands on Pa for Bilaawal on the original C scale 🙂 But later when the swaras are sung (Sa Ri Ga M1 M1, Ga M1 M2 Da Ga …), the base seems to be E with Bhairavi. The raag starting with ‘suno guni jan’ sounds like Panthuvaraali in Carnatic which is equivalent to Poorvi in Hindustani. Here’s my full interpretation: https://hobbycue.com/arts/music/graha-bhedam/
