Jis raat jaley na parwaane

I wanted to write a post to this song as a Tribute to Mehmood on his death anniversay on 23rd July but I missed the date somehow.

This qawwali is special on many counts. First of all it is a composed by Madan Mohan and written by Rajendra Krishan. The film is Sanjog (1961). It is a marathon effort by Rafi Sahab and Asha Bhosle who are trying to outplay each other in this 10 minutes long qawwali. And ” sone pe suhaaga ” is a unique trivia about this song, as both the singers are giving playback to Mehmood, i.e. Mehmood male qawwaal and Mehmood in the guise of a female qawwaal.

We have seen a song where both Lata and Asha are giving playback to a single actor i.e. Ameeta playing a single character in ‘Mere Mehboob’ in a single song here.

The only instance comparable to this is the “jhanak Jhanak Paayal baaje ” song ‘aadha hai chandrama raat aadhi ” where Sandhya has two faces and two get-ups and performing the duet there .

Needless to say that this is a fabulous qawwali and performed well by Mehmood. This happens to be be the last and final song of Sanjog (1961). So one more film to add to the list of films of which all songs are posted and another one for the tally of Asha – Rafi duets. Since the work of writing the lyrics of this song is the difficult part of the job, I thought it prudent write the post too.

‘Aadha hai chandrama’ is from ‘Navrang’, and Sandhya has two faces in the holi song from the same film. (Hope I am correct)

Triple voices for who else, Mehmood once again!

And if Mehmood, can do it, how can Junior be left behind! 😉

Yes, very correct. ” Aadha hai chandrama……” is from film Navrang.

Lata and Asha giving playback to Moushumi and her “inner voice”:

This would actually happen in any double role situations…

Kishore Kumar/Bhupinder giving playback to 2 Vijay Anand in Double Cross

Kishore Kumar/Amit Kumar giving playback to 2 Amitabhs in Mahaan

Kishore/Amit giving playback to 2 Mithuns in Aamne Samne,

etc, etc.

Nahm ji,

The reference to the song “Aadha Hai Chandrama” is not correct. As pointed out above, the song in which Sandhya wears two dresses, one male and one female, and wears two faces, one her own and one a mask worn backwards, is the Holi song “Arre Jaa Re Hat Natkhat, Na Chhoo Re Mera Ghunghat”. In this song, she is lip syncing the voices of Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle.

As far as I can recall, this song and this situation is very unique, in that the two roles on screen are played simultaneously by the same individual on screen, and not by two separate on screen persona, as in the case of a double role, or even as in the example of inner voice, given by Bluefire ji. In this song, she is appearing as a female dancer when facing the camera, and as a male dancer when facing away from the camera. On seeing the dance steps, one comes to realize what a difficult presentation this one is. The dance steps of the male dancer are executed while her back is towards the camera. One can imagine that the choreography and its implementation would have taken a lot of planning and effort.

The song ‘Aadha Hai Chandrama’ is a straightforward duet with Mahipal and Sandhya lip syncing the voices of Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle.

You are right Sir, I have somehow mixed all those songs and movies. In fact before sending the post, I was planning to give the link to the the ‘Navrang’ song post of the blog. It slipped my mind in the hurry to send the post.
Here is the song post.
https://atulsongaday.wordpress.com/2009/03/10/arre-ja-re-hat-natkhat/

I meant to refer to this song only where Sandhya has two faces. I did say two get ups and singing duet.

BTW, there are two many corrections required in the lyrics. I request Atul ji to correct them , referring to the lyrics sent by me.

I had independently done the lyrics and color coding of this song yesterday night based on the audio (whose link I have provided). I have checked the lyrics of the video link as well. I do not find much difference in the lyrics in that video vis a vis the audio, so but for a few typos (that I have now corrected), the lyrics are correct, except for the sargam portion where I have left blank at places where I am unable to get them correctly .

That much I had deduced that the lyrics must have been done by you. Now both the lyrics are reconciled, which is what I requested in the comment above. Almost perfect but a few more ‘typos’ :

‘ shikwa ‘ na karenge ham tera
tu daad hamaare sabr ki ‘de’

lekin ‘wo’ sitamgar yaad rahe

There are a few post sent before this are not yet posted, if I may dare to remind. 🙂

Nahmji,
Are you referring to mere mehboob me kya nahi kya nahi? Its picturised on Sadhna AND Ameeta and not one person Ameeta.
The responses have itself become one qawali>lengthwise.

Thank you for this nice post, nahmji. I’ve never heard this qawwali before – I love qawwalis. 🙂

I remember seeing this film, Sanjog (1961), a long time ago. Was an OK film, with a lot of famous songs, including one of my favourites “wo bhooli dastaan”. 🙂

Thanks for liking the post and the qawwali. ‘Wo bhooli daastaan ‘ was a regular song on radio, but had not seen it till cable tv started. Only then we got to see a lot of songs which were only heard on TV earlier. This qawwali too i might have heard on radio, but it is not well known.

hullo Nahmji
just heard this qawwali. almost a full month after it was posted. (am still lagging behind the blog) when i was listening i thought that the line in the first antara “iss ishq ke dukhde kaun gine” should be “iss ishq ke fukhde kaun gine ” he means piece and not woes.
am i right?
but superb find

‘iss ishq ke dukhde kaun gine
do chaar ya das ki baat nahin”

The woed is “dukhde” only, I am positive about it. ‘Dukhde ginna’ is a common term. I am not sure what you mean by the word ‘fukhde’. If you are referring to ‘fukhre ‘ (recently released movie name), than, I think that is a contemporary slang word.

There are some similar words like ‘fikr’ and ‘fiqre’ :

Fikr – worry, deep thinking

Fiqre – stray comments(teasing), one liners(critical), idle chit-chat
