Prem naam hai mera. . .
Prem Chopra. . .

Thus happens the surprise introduction of this villain cum character artist, in the film ‘Bobby’ (1973). I call it a surprise because his name does not appear in the credits at the start of the film. ‘Bobby’ was one of the films that I got to see on the big screen, with family. Prem Chopra would be a familiar artist in the nascent mind of the school going ‘yours truly’, thanks to films like ‘Shaheed’ and ‘Upkar’. And so, when abruptly and unexpectedly on to the shining tinsel screen, appears this familiar face and the familiar voice, chewing on a blade of grass, and making his presence felt in a very lewd and unexpected manner, I remember I was aghast – “arre, is ka to naam bhi nahin hai, ye kaise aa gaya?”. For a split second, the thought did cross my mind – “cinema waalon ne koi galat reel laga di hai”. But immediately as the film continued, that thought would be discarded. “Achhaa, aisa bhi hota hai. B’gair naam ke bhi actor film mein aa jaate hain”.

As I look back on that micro memory of that tiny episode, I realize – goodness, what other actor has had this opportunity of being able to introduce himself to the world, on the silver screen, in his own voice, and in his own name. Even Amitabh Bachchan had to sing “My Name Is Anthony Gonzalves”. As far back as I am able to ruffle through the threads of memory, I cannot recall any other actor having made this kind of introduction on screen. Maybe Raj Kapoor – “Mera Naam Raju Gharaana Anaam”, in ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’ (1960). I can not recall another.

Greetings to Prem Sb, on his birthday today (23 september 2014).

One of the most enduring icons in the industry, he was born in Lahore in 1935. After the unfortunate partition of India, the family moved and settled in Simla. It was here, in his school and college years, that his interest in theatre and dramatics took a serious turn. His father wanted him to have a career as a doctor or an IAS officer. Despite facing stiff opposition, he made a move to come to Bombay in the late 1950s, with the dreams of being a hero on the silver screen. It would be some time before he was able to find his place in the industry, and in the interim he worked with the marketing department of Times of India, Bombay.

A chance meeting in the Bombay local train, brought him to Ranjeet Studios, to be introduced to Jagjit Sethi, who was then planning a Punjabi film ‘Chaudhry Karnail Singh’, a Hindu-Muslim love story against the backdrop of the partition. Jagjit Sethi was searching for a new face to be the hero in this film. The search ended with this meeting, and Prem was offered the lead role in the film. The role opened up new avenues, and the young actor started to get more offers even while the shooting of ‘Chaudhry Karnail Singh’ was in progress. The film was released in 1960.

After a couple of small roles and four years, 1965 happened. And with it came hit films ‘Sikandar e Azam’, ‘Shaheed’ and ‘Nishan’. These were followed up with ‘Teesri Manzil’ and ‘Mera Saaya’ in 1966. By the time ‘Upkar’ hit the cinema screens in 1967, Prem had resigned from his job at Times of India, and became a full time actor.

The roles of villainous type stuck to him, and he became one of the leading villains in 1970s and 80s. He had a lasting friendship and working association with Rajesh Khanna, and together they have done a score of hit films. There was a time when Rajesh Khanna was the top star, and when the distributors were approached for release of films, the first question they would ask was not ‘who the heroine opposite to Rajesh Khanna is?’, but ‘whether Prem Chopra is in the film?’

Five decades and almost 400 films later, Prem Sb continues to be active with his career in films.

There is a very small number of songs that he has performed on screen, given the nature of his roles in most films. And I think majority of them are already showcased here on this blog. The song that I present today is a one of those handful, where Prem Sb gets to perform. The film is ‘Vachan’ from 1974. The song is a duet performed on screen by Prem Chopra and Shashi Kapoor, with Mahendra Kapoor singing for Prem Sb and Kishore Kumar singing for Shashi Kapoor.

The scenario is a jam session party of young friends. Vimi is introducing Prem as her new friend. Prem is new to the group, having just returned from London. Shashi Kapoor is the old suitor pursuing Vimi. The song is kind of a competition in which Prem is trying to make himself known to the gathering, and Shashi Kapoor, being the uninvited guest, trying to put down Prem, and keep her away from Vimi. Somewhat comical, the extra accent is provided by Rajendernath. The lyrics are from the pen of Hasrat Jaipuri and the music composition is by Shanker Jaikishan.

Greetings once again Prem Sb. Be healthy, and live long.

Cheers.
