A legend was born on 28/09/1929. Today (28 september 2014) is Lata Mangeshkar’s 86th Birthday that we all celebrate on this blog. Many many happy returns of the day to her and may she live a long and healthy life.
What does one write that is going to make a difference to the Nightingale ‘s stature in the annals of hindi film playback singing ? As I understand she has stopped singing film songs, some time ago. That still makes her contribution and devoted work to stay on top of her profession for better part of 6 decades, an achievement which is unparalleled anywhere else in the world and in any field bar literary circles. May be some politicians also survive this long. In the field of performing arts, this is singular example. Asha Bhonsle may have surpassed her in the number of songs or even the longevity of career, but she was not the top playback singer for 50’s and 60’s when Lata ruled like a queen. Asha never surpassed Lata in one more feature that is perfection of rendition and voice modulation according to the actor performing the song on screen. The voices Lata had for Meena Kumar, Madhubala, Nutan, Nargis, Mala Sinha, Sharmila Tagore Asha Parekh, Sadhna, Waheeda Rehman, Nanda, Mumtaz, Raakhi, Rekha, etc. were so much ‘the perfect palyback singing’ that no one can really come close to achieving that .
Let us move on to the song which is song no. 11 of ‘Chaandni Raaten’ series. Yes it is a night song, talking about moon in a different way. A different song for Lata Mangeshkar, the ever faithful Laxmikant-Pyarelal are the composers of this song from the film ‘ Roop Tera Mastana’ (1972) and lyricist is Asad Bhopali. The song in picturized on Mumtaz and Jeetendra in what appears to be Vrindavan Garden in Mysore.
Like Shankar-Jaikishan in the earlier decades, Laxmikant-Pyarelal were having Lata Mangeshkar sing all type of songs for them. If stats are checked they would have most all Lata music scores after Shankar – Jaikishan. Even R. D. Burman relied heavily on Lata for all type of songs in 70’s. Her equation with S. D. Burman, C. Ramchandra, Salil Chaudhary, Khaiyyam and Madan Mohan is well known and the results are out there for all to see and hear.

I should desist doing this score board exercise, or Atul ji will be hard put to keep correcting the score boards in my posts every time it changes, from now to the time of posting the song. As someone would say, ” ek to post ki proof reading karo,, spelling mistakes correct karo, names correct karo aur lyrics mein bhi silly mistakes karti ho. Achhi baat nahin hai kisi se itna kaam karwaana ‘ 🙂 .
But really, I must thank Atul ji, for correcting my post in all aspects mentioned above. He does it quite dutifully and hardly ever gets thanked for doing it, at least from my side.
So this is the ‘Chaandni Raaten’ song as a tribute to Lata Mangeshkar on her 85th birthday. As I said Lata could sing anything for anyone with composure, class and aplomb.

People, who accused me of practising a monopoly, were wrong.
The media fuelled rumours about my monopoly. The first question I was always asked during interviews was about my supposed monopoly. Once I was even asked if I tampered with the equipment during other singers’ recordings. Ab bataayiye main kyon aisa karun (How can I do that)? I never bothered with what other singers were doing. When Runa Laila came to India for the first time, I went to her first recording for Kalyanji-Anandji even though I had fever.
They said I was just indulging in dikhawa (show); that in fact I had gone to see how she sang. Arrey mujhe kya padi hai kaun kaisa gaata hai (Why should I care about how other people sing)? Runa Laila met me with lots of affection. Later she too was poisoned against me.
Even Vani Jairam, I praised all the time. She still turned around to say I would not let her sing.
Do you know Anuradha Paudwal sang the first song of her career for my brother in a Marathi film, directed by Vasant Joglekar? Forget about female singers, even some male singers accused of trying to stop them from singing. Anyway, I wish them all the best.

There are so many of them. Sajjad Husain’s Ae dilruba (Rustam Sohrab) and Aaj mere naseeb ne mujhko rula-rula diya (Hulchal), Salil Chowdhary’s O sajana barkha bahar (Parakh) and Raaton ke saaye ghane (Annadata), Naushadsaab’s Jaane wale se mulaqat (Amar), Roshanji’s Paaon choo lene do (Taj Mahal) and all the songs in the film Chitralekha.
Shyam Sunder’s Saajan ki galiyan chod chale (Bazar), Sun lo sajan dil ki baat (Lahore) and Bahaar ayee khili kaliyan (Alif Laila), Madan Bhaiyya ke to asankhya gaane hain…
My favourites are Wohchup rahe to mere dil ke daagh jalte hain and Jab jab tumhein bhulaya tum aur yaad aaye (Jahan Ara), Phir Chitraguptaji aapke Patna ke (Akash Deep), Vasant Desai’s Ghanashyam sundara, Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s Woh hai zara khafa-khafa (Shagird), Chalo sajna jahan tak ghataa chale (Mere Humdam Mere Dost) and all the songs of Inteqaam, RD Burman’s Dilbar dil se pyare (Caravan), Bahon mein chale aao (Anamika) and Na ja mere humdam (Pyar Ka Mausam), S D Burman’s O mere bairaagi bhanwra (Ishq Par Zor Nahin) and Jogi jab se tu aaya mere dware (Bandini), Kalyanji-Anandji’s Chandan sa badan (Saraswatichandra) and Akele hain chale aao (Raaz).
I love Khayyam’s Baharon mera jeevan bhi sanwaron (Aakhri Khat) and Ae dil-e-nadaan (Razia Sultan).

This song is also picturized in Brindavan Gardens which is also called Krishnaraja Sagar Dam near Mysore. The other one picturized at the same location is “Akaash Pe Do taare” from the same movie.

It is 85th. 2014-1929 = 85. She is completing 85 yrs today so its 85th B’day. When a child completes first year, they celebrate his FIRST B’day. Thats how it goes.
