23rd December was the anniversary of passing away of two artists that have a significant contribution to the Indian cinema – singer Noorjehaan and music director K Datta.

Noorjehaan, born as Allah Wasai in 1926, was one of the eleven siblings born into a family of musicians and singers. Her parents, Madad Ali and Fateh Bibi encouraged her and at the age of six years, she learnt music at the feet of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. When she was nine, her talent caught the attention of Ghulam Ahmed Chishti, who brought her to stage programs in Lahore, in which she appeared as Baby Noorjehaan. She gained attention in Lahore, and was invited to sing and to play child roles in Punjabi films being produced in Lahore. She appeared in films like ‘Misr Ka Sitaara’ (1935), and played the role of child Heer, in the Punjabi film ‘Heer Sayaal’.

In 1939, music director Ghulam Haider took her under his wings. He recorded the famous song “Shaala Jawaaniyan Maane” in her voice, for the film ‘Gul e Bakavali’ (1939). The success of this Punjabi song established her as a talented emerging singer in north India. On to 1942 and at the age of 16 years, she made her debut opposite to Pran (also his first Hindi film) in the film ‘Khandaan’ produced by Dalsukh M Pancholi. The film was directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi. The success of the film and its music brought both Noorjehaan and Rizvi to Bombay, where they got married later in the same year.

Her popularity grew and she became the primary singer actress in both the Bombay and Lahore industries. When the partition happened, she chose to move back to Lahore and be in Pakistan. Her presence was highly instrumental in the growth of the fledgling film industry in Pakistan.

K Datta, also known as Datta Korgaonkar was born in 1901. His childhood was spent in Girgaum, from where he imbibed and developed his interest and talents in music. As a child, he started to perform on stage. In mid 1930s, he came to Bombay and slowly established himself as a music director of substance and repute. His name is all but forgotten now, but it is a fact that at the height of his popularity in the 1940s, there used to be a queue of singer-aspirants outside his office near Opera House in Bombay.

He started his career as an independent music director in 1939 with the film ‘Mera Haque’ produced by Master Vinayak. Over a period of two and a half decades, his film career is limited to only 17 films in Hindi cinema, and also some Marathi films. In the 1940s, his songs composed for Noorjehaan became very popular. After ‘Gumaashta’ in 1951 and then ‘Rishtaa’ in 1954, his music was also swamped out of memory by the era of Shanker Jaikishan and OP Nayyar. His last film was ‘Ajnabi’ in 1966.

I am presenting today this song from the 1943 film ‘Nadaan’. The film is produced under the banner of AB Productions and is directed by Zia Sarhadi. Along with Tanveer Naqvi, Zia Sarhadi also wrote the eleven songs for this film. This song is written by him. The cast of actors includes Noorjehaan, Maya Devi, Jillo Bai, Alakhnanda, Mumtaz, Masood, Aman, Muraad, Nasir, Jaani Babu and others. Given the star cast, it is clear that this song is picturized on Noorejhaan herself.

A song recorded more than seven decades ago. A lady concerned with the question whether to fall in love or no. A conclusion affirmed that doubts will never result in anything good. But from the song we do not know whether the doubt was resolved for or against falling love. The film has to be seen for that. But in the absence of the film, let us listen and enjoy this endearing melody.

[Note: Thanks are due to Mahesh ji for the anniversary reminders. 🙂 ]

Song – Dil Doon Ke Na Doon (Naadan) (1943) Singer – Noorjehaan, Lyrics – Zia Sarhadi, MD – K Datta

Lyrics

dil doon ke na doon

dil doon ke na doon
dil doon ke na doon
baaton pe kya unki bharosa. . .
dil doon ke na doon
dil doon ke na doon
baaton pe kya unki bharosa. . .
waada to wo karte hain wafaa mujh se karenge
waada to wo karte hain wafaa mujh se karenge
jholi meri ummeed ke phoolon se bharenge
jholi meri ummeed ke phoolon se bharenge
ae ae ae ae ae
dil doon ke na doon
. . .
dil doon ke na doon
dil doon ke na doon
baaton pe kya unki bharosa

mumkin hai. . .
mumkin hai ke dil lete hi
fauran wo badal jaayen
mumkin hai
mumkin hai ke dil lete hi
fauran wo badal jaayen
barsaat ke mausam mein
mujhe door se tarsaa. .yen
haan. . .aan
kehte hain bura hota hai har shaque ka nateeja. . .
kehte hain bura hota hai har shaque ka nateeja. . .
aa aa aa
dil doon
. . .
dil doon ke na doon
dil doon ke na doon
baaton pe kya unki bharosa
waada to wo karte hain wafaa mujh se karenge
waada to wo karte hain wafaa mujh se karenge
jholi meri ummeed ke phoolon se bharenge. . .
ae ae ae ae

dil doon ke na doon
