Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 15
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A little over two years ago, we had celebrated the century of this remarkable and versatile artist, as a music director, when I had posted the song “Nanha Sa Dil Deti Hoon Pardesi Preet Nibhaana”.  A peerless master of the classical tradition, whose typecasting in the industry was so intense that he mostly remained confined to B/C grade mythological films for most of his career of nearly five decades.

Remembering SN Tripathi on the anniversary of his passing away (28th March).

Yes, the typecasting was stringent, but he incessantly continued to create superlative melodies the covered a broad spectrum of classical genres – from the songs of pure ragas to the the songs that mixed the folk with the classical to create some superbly lilting tunes that are now part of an un-erasable memory.  Despite being typecast as he was, time and again he continued to baffle his critics and surprise his listener’s with enchanting tunes.  The song “Jhoomti Hai Nazar Jhoomta Hai Pyaar” from film  ‘Hatim Tai’ (1956) became a surprise hit of the year.  In 1960, the ghazals composed by him for the film ‘Laal Qila’ actually set a new trend in ghazal singing.  In 1963, he composed for an unlikely film – ‘Zingaaro’, and dealt out a beauty which he got Suman Kalyanpur to  sing – “Kasak Uthi Mann Mein, Aag Lagi Tan Mein”.

Thaane Kaajario Banaa Loon, Mhaare Nainaa Mein Ramaaye Loon” – from ‘Veer Durgadas’ (1960); “Nain Ka Chain Chura Kar Le Gayi” – from ‘Chandramukhi’ (1960); “O Pawan Veg Se Udne Waale Ghode” – from ‘Jai Chittod’ (1961); “Tu Ne Chhal Kiya. . .” – from ‘Piya Milan Ki Aas’ (1961); “Taaron Ki Thandi Chhainyaan Hum Tum Miley” – from ‘Naag Devta’ (1962); the list of surprise hits simply seems endless.

Today, I present a once very familiar, but now obscure melody from an unfamiliar film ‘Pareeksha’, from 1963.  The film makes its debut on the blog today.  SN Tripathi got Geeta Dutt to sing this remarkable song, that once was quite popular on the radio waves.  The words are from the pen of SR Saaz, a name that I am not very familiar with.  This is as yet the second song by this lyricist to be posted on this blog.

The beauty of this song is that the two ‘antaraas’ (stanzas) are tuned to different melodies.  And the second ‘antaraa’ is a stunning verse of rising crescendo of short, two-three word lines.  The music director has pushed the singer to limits of her high pitch notes, but Geeta Dutt has also held on and rendered the lines beautifully.  A wonderful and a surprising composition.
Listen and enjoy.

Song – Sapnon Mein Aane Waala Aaya Bahaar Ban Kar (Pareeksha) (1963) Singer – Geeta Dutt, Lyrics – SR Saaz, MD – SN Tripathi

Lyrics

sapnon mein aane waala
aaya bahaar ban kar

sapnon mein aane waala
aaya bahaar ban kar
aankhon mein pyaar bhar ke
dil ka qaraar ban kar
ae ji aankhon mein pyaar bhar ke
dil ka qaraar ban kar
sapnon mein aane waala
aaya bahaar ban kar

dekha hai ek sapna
dekha hai ek sapna
baithi thi ban sanwar kar
aaye wo chori chori
bainyyaan pakad ke mori
kehne lagey wo gori
aa jaa ke pyaar kar len
yun kehne lagey wo gori
aa jaa ke pyaar kar len
sapnon mein aane waala
aaya bahaar ban kar
aankhon mein pyaar bhar ke
dil ka qaraar ban kar

jeevan mein aaj
aayi bahaar
jaaga hai pyaar
badla hai rang
machli umang
uthi tarang mann mein
jeevan mein aaj
aayi bahaar
jaaga hai pyaar
badla hai rang
machli umang
uthi tarang mann mein
o ho ho hooo
ooo ooo ooo ooooo
lallal lallal la lall laa
lallal lallal la lall laa
sapnon mein aane waala
aaya bahaar ban kar
aankhon mein pyaar bhar ke
dil ka qaraar ban kar
ae ji aankhon mein pyaar bhar ke
dil ka qaraar ban kar
