“Ganga Ki Saugandh” (1978) was an Sultan Ahmad production. It had Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Pran, Amjad Khan, I S Johar, Bindu, Anju Mahendru etc in it.

Three songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the fourth song from “Ganga Ki Saugandh” (1978). This song is sung by Aarti Mukherji, Rafi and Amit Kumar alongwith chorus. Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a dance song where all the inhabitants of a village called Prajanagar are shown celebrating some occasion by singing and dancing. Rekha, the lead female dancer gets to lip sync in Aarti Mukherji’s voice while Pran and Anwar Hussain, both playing distinguised village persons amicable share the voice of Rafi as far as lip syncing is concerned.

This is a long song lasting over five minutes and a half. This gives Rekha sufficient opportunity to take a breather and during this time she fantasises about Amitabh Bachchan, her Knight in the shining armour, riding a horse and coming to her doorstep to marry her.Amitabh Bachchan, known to sing mostly in the voices of Kishore Kumar , this time sings in Kishore Kumar’s son’s voice. Yes, it is one of those few occasions where Amit Kumar has given playback for Amitabh Bachchan.

Those who had seen “Sholay” (1975) and who were wondering what happened to Gabbar Singh in the end get their answer in this song. We find that Gabbar Singh was still alive and kicking, wearing the same outfit as in “Sholay”(1975). Here he is shown training his revolver at the forehead of Sambha this time, obviously asking him the question “tera kya hoga Sambha”. But we only watch his lips move during interlude of the song and we never know what reply Sambha gave that made Gabbar Singh spare his trusted henchman. A little while later, we find Gabbar Singh, Sambha and a few other gang members going towards the village just as the villagers are busy singing and dancing. Deja vu ! Indeed, Gabbar Singh’ gang seemingly attacks a village just when the villagers decide to celebrate something with a song and dance. Obviously a celebration song is to Gabbar sing what a red rag is to a bull.

Sir,
Tag line for the blog title needs to be corrected to ‘over Eleven thousand songs posted already’
Thanks and Regards,

Atul ji
Correction required, female singer`s name has been wrongly mentioned as “INDRANI MUKHERJEE”, It should be “ARTI MUKHERJEE or ARTHI MUKHERJEE”

correction required both in post and the tags please

Indrani mukherjee is the name of an actress, who was there in Aakhri Khat,Des Pardes,
Dharam Veer,Mr.Natwarlal,Zameer,Haqeeqat,Grihasthi,Kunwari,Dharmaputra must have been a typo…….

Arthi Mukherjee sang in Masoom(->filmfare award winner:R.D.burman),Do Dil, Geet Gata Chal, Humkadam(rakhee),Manokaamna,Tapasya,Sahara(1958) etc

Atul ji,
If you do not mind, please correct the inadvertant typo to read as ” knight in the shining armour”.
Thanks & regards,
Avadh Lal
