These lines would apply to so many artists, especially those whose careers in the industry have been short lived, or curtailed for various reasons. But whatever is the measure of the duration of their work in the industry, it is their creations that continue to delight us, and keeps the memories alive. Even if it is one song. And the fun part is the process of discovery that continues. Some of these lesser known artists ended up working for lesser known banners and films. Their music would only sometimes make it to the mainstream and popular cinema. Most of the time they created songs for movies that remained unknown and obscure. Today, when we dig up such unheard gems, that first encounter is such a charm and a pleasure.
Gopal Bahadur Singh is one such songwriter, whose work mostly remained confined to religious an stunt action films in the 1950s and 60s. We are more familiar with his pen name – Gopal Singh Nepali or GS Nepali, the poet who gave us the timeless bhajan – “Darshan Do Ghanshyam Nath Mori Ankhiyaan Pyaasi Re” in the film ‘Narsi Bhagat’ (1957).
Remembering GS Nepali on the anniversary of his passing away today (17th April).
GS Nepali is one songwriter, who was invited to come to Bombay on his own merit, by PL Santoshi. As a young journalist from Champaaran district in Bihar, he had already made a good name for himself as a lyricist in Banlga cinema. He made his debut in Bombay, with the film ‘Begum’ (1945). The song “Aankehn To Hui Band Magar Dard Jagaa Re“, in the voice of Ashok Kumar and “Kaliyon Mein Hoon Kali Anaar Ki” in the voice of Naseem Bano, became very popular with the audiences.
An interesting anecdote. The producers of the film ‘Gajre’ (1948) contracted GS Nepali for the song lyrics, and brought in Naushad Sb for music direction. Of course, Naushad Sb tried to bring in Shakeel Badayuni as the lyricist. A tussle ensued and finally the producer suggested a formula by which the two lyricist would share the work half and half. At this point, Nepali got adamant, and finally it was Naushad Sb who decided to move out of the project, and Anil Biswas was brought in as the MD. Probably the first time that a songwriter had been able to prevail and work on his own terms.
This song is from the 1954 picture ‘Sultanat’. The film is directed by Dwarka Khosla for Vikas Productions. The cast of actors includes Shyama, Manhar Desai, Anwar, Sulochana, Neeru, Tripathi, BM Vyas, Babu Raje, Shanta Patel, and Muhammad Ismail etc. Of the six songs in this film, four are written by GS Nepali, including this one, and the remaining two are by Anjum Jaipuri. Music direction is by Chitragupt. I read an interesting comment in an article about that period. If it was a religious or a stunt film in the 1950s, then quite frequently, it would have GS Nepali and Chitragupt working together, with the majority of the songs in female voice being rendered by Asha. That is the amount of films these three artists have done together in that era. Yes, the singing voice is that of Asha ji. I request other readers and friends to please add more information about the film, and the on screen performance of this song.
A gem of song, that I heard for the first time myself, as I was searching for a song for this post. The music is vintage Chitragupt – melodious, with a fairly good pace. An expression of happiness as the time of waiting for the beloved is over and the two have met in the spring. As the lady says
