Aap Se Humko Bichhde Huye, Ek Zamaana Beet Gaya” – a classic from the 1969 film ‘Vishwaas’. Interesting story behind this song. Kalyanji Anandji had composed this song to be sung by Mukesh. On the day of the recording, for some reason, Mukesh could not be present. Kalyanji Anandji, for the sake of utilizing the recording session, decided to record the song anyway, in another voice. The song was supposed to be re-recorded when Mukesh would be available again for recording. Later, when re-recording was being discussed with Mukesh, he happened to listen to the song that was already recorded. So impressed was he with the voice and the rendering of this specific song, he insisted that the song be retained and included in the film as recorded. Thus was launched the singing career of a mechanical engineering graduate, who had come to Bombay initially, not to become a singer.

Wishing Manhar Udhas many happy returns of his birthday (13th May).

Manhar is eldest of the three brothers, all singers and all who have made a mark for themselves in the world of music. Both his younger brothers – Pankaj and Nirmal are successful ghazal singers. Manhar (born in 1943) and Nirmal (born in 1944) are closer in terms of age group, as compared to Pankaj who is born in 1951. At school, it was Nirmal whose singing became very popular. Seeing the success of his younger sibling, Manhar also started to learn music, and grew up becoming a talented singer himself.

Although the above mentioned song of the film ‘Vishwaas’ is the first recorded film song of Manhar, another song takes the credit of the first song to be released. The film ‘Fareb’ from 1968 carries a duet with Hemlata, composed by Usha Khanna – “Hataa De Ghoonghat, Dikha De Mukhdaa”, which although being recorded later, got released earlier than his first song.

The voice impressed the audiences and other music directors, and Manhar’s career took on a steady path through the 1970s and 80s. In 1973, SD Burman got him to join Lata in the famous duet from ‘Abhimaan’ – “Loote Koi Mann Ka Nagar Ban Ke Mera Saathi“. In 1975, he recorded the timeless duet with Asha Bhosle – “Har Janam Mein Hamaara Milan” (from ‘Kaaghaz Ki Naao’). Then we have “Tu Is Tarah Se Meri Zindagi Mein Shaamil Hai” from ‘Aap To Aise Na The’ (1980), “Hum Tumhen Chaahte Hain Aise” from ‘Qurbaani’ also from 1980. in 1984 came Subhash Ghai’s ‘Hero’, and all his duets with Anuradha Paudwal became popular hits “Tu Mera Jaanu Hai”, “Ding Dong, O Baby Sing A Song”, and “Pyaar Karne Waale Kabhi Darte Nahin”, and more.

Despite this impressive repertoire of popular hits, Manhar never really was swamped with work. Maybe that his voice sounds so close to Mukesh, especially if one listens to the song from ‘Qurbaani’ and the song from ‘Vishwaas’. He has also made a niche for himself as a ghazal singer, and has also recorded non film songs with Polydor.

The suggestion for today’s song and the lyrics have been sent in by Prakash ji. This is a duet he recorded with Asha Bhosle, for the 1985 film ‘Ek Chitthi Pyaar Bhari’. The lyrics are attributed jointly to Indeewar and Verma Malik. Music composition is by Kalyanji Anandji. On screen, this song is performed by Reena Roy and Raj Babbar.

Greetings once again to Manhar. And thanks to Prakash ji for the reminder.
