Mohammed Rafi – The Incomparable – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
“I’m…fine. I’m just sorry you had to wander under the little black cloud that’s been following me around all day. That’s probably why I nearly ran you over earlier, and why you got stuck with me now.”

Refusing to consider what else could go wrong, she aimed a commendably calm smile at him. If she’d learned anything from her years in advertising, it was that perception was everything. If you appeared in control, everyone thought you were.

“The good news is that it’s me, not you, and that bad days get better.”

“What about bad weeks?”

“Those are the ones that build character.” Or so her grandma said.

“Bad months?” he asked, and watched as her smile made it to her eyes. Something knowing shifted in those doe-brown depths.

“That’s when you need to find something to do that takes you away from your problems for a while. Whatever you’re dealing with won’t go away,” she warned him,“but for that hour or that day, you have taken away its power over you.”

The above is just a portion of some pulp fiction that I keep reading every now and than. When there is nothing good to read, usually after the Sudoku in the newspapers is done and i have read the usual article’s that are readable in the newspaper. Some times these books have these ” nuggets of wisdom ” or some portions where a lot is said like in the above portion. I had copied and saved in the drafts to use for a suitable song some months back, though it has no connection with the song post here.

The song is a duet for a change in the Rafi series. A typical Shammi Kapoor-Rafi-O. P. Nayyar song with Shamshad Begum adding spice to the super hit formula. While writing down the lyrics, I wondered if the lyricist is Majrooh Sultanpuri. I checked and found that it is indeed written by Majrooh.

This is a one of a kind movie score with songs composed by O. P. Nayyar and Roshan. While Roshan songs have Lata Mangeshkar, OPN songs have Shamshad Begum, a duet each with Talat Mehmood and Rafi. The Lata – Talat mehmood duet by Roshan is also on the lead pair of Shammi Kapoor and Nalini Jaywant, is very similar to this Rafi -Shamshad Begum duet and yet different with the contrasting styles of the singers.

The audio and video quality available on youtube is of poor quality. The audio link for the song is given along with a video link of poor quality. It is a very catchy and enjoyable song, making one wonder about how it has remained unknown and unheard before this.

As far as I am concerned, there is no one who could have sung this one and innumerable songs of this genre for Shammi Kapoor, better than Rafi Sahab. As one of the song goes ” Meri jaan waah waah waah ” !

PS-According to HFGK, this song is in two parts, and both parts are sung by the same singers. But HFGK provides details of record only for one part. So records for the second part of the song may not have been made and it could be there only in the movie.

Song-Aate jaate aankh bachaana (Mehbooba)(1954) Singers-Rafi, Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

aate jaate
arey aankh bachaana
aate jaate
aankh bachaana
ghadi ghadi phir dil mein aana
haay re teraa jawaab nahin
naazuk dil pe
zor chalaana
naazuk dil pe
zor chalaana
jo na kahoon
wo bhi kehlaana
haay re teraa jawaab nahin

dil ki dhadhkan
sun to bewafaa aa
dil ki dhadhkan
sun to bewafaa
har dam teraa naam le
dil ki dhadkan ko samjhaa do
zabt se zaraa kaam le

ulti seedhi baat banaana
adaa adaa se dil tadpaana
haay re teraa jawaab nahin
naazuk dil pe
zor chalaana
jo na kahoon
wo bhi kehlaana
haay re teraa jawaab nahin

batlaani ik baat chaahon main
batlaani ik baat chaahon main
phir na batlaa sakoon

kuchh to munh se bol re zaalim
kab talak teri raah takoon
khaamoshi khud hai afsaana
tujhe pada yeh bhi samjhaana
haay re teraa jawaab nahin

aate jaate
aankh bachaana
ghadi ghadi phir dil mein aana
haay re teraa jawaab nahin

sab kuchh teraa
tu mere liye ae
sab kuchh teraa
tu mere liye
keh de tujhe iqraar hai
sab kuchh kehna
phir bhi na kehna
bekhabar yahi pyaar hai

arey chupke chupke pyaar nibhaana
khule khule dushman ban jaana
haay re teraa jawaab nahin
naazuk dil pe
zor chalaana
jo na kahoon
wo bhi kehlaana
haay re teraa jawaab nahin

One typo in the lyrics :

batlaani ik baat chaahon main
phir ‘bhi’ na batlaa sakoon
