The name Neetu Singh conjures up an image of a very bright and charming and ever smiling beauty. She started her life in Bollywood at a very young age – she was only 8 when we see her name appear as a child actor, in two 1966 films – ‘Suraj’ and ‘Dus Lakh’.  However, the lasting memories are of her double role of twin sisters, separated on account of their parents’ discord, as Baby Sonia, in “Do Kaliyan” (1968). The image of a small child girl with double plaited hair [‘do choti’ sounds better, no? ;)] is still retained in our mind’s eye singing “Bachche Mann Ke Sachche” in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice.

The same year we also see her un-credited cameo appearance as a curious and nippy small child girl watching Kishore Kumar sing “Hawaaon Pe Likh Do Hawaaon Ke Naam” in the film ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ (1968).  From her looks and mannerism, it seems that the latter appearance (in ‘Do Dooni Chaar’) is probably filmed somewhat earlier than 1968, but the two films got released together that year.  Then there is also the image of a slightly older Baby Sonia, playing Tanuja’s sister in “Pavitra Paapi” (1970). Again in ‘do-choti’, she looked very cute.

Her filmography says that her debut as a heroine came in the year 1973 in ‘Rickshawaala’, a movie directed by K Shankar, the Chennai based director.  There is also a reference available online which indicates that the 1974 film ‘Shatranj Ke Mohre’ is actually her debut film as a heroine opposite to Rakesh Pandey.  ‘Ricksahwaala’ is probably a later contract, however it got released earlier.

Another thing which I have noted (mentally) a long time back is that she played a little sister to Jeetendra in ‘Waaris'(1969), and then later she paired with him romantically in 3-4 movies. Bollywood and its ways ;). Her pairing with Rishi Kapoor is well known but she made a good sight with any hero she worked with – Amitabh, Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna, Jeetendra, Shashi Kapoor (her future chote sasur (father in law)), and Randhir Kapoor (her future brother in law) etc. Randhir also happens to be her first hero too ;).

Interesting to note that she has two ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ in her life. One in 1968, as an 8 or 9 year old child girl, and the second one in 2010, as a 52 year old house-wife. She is so endearing in the latter. In the earlier one, we have a glimpse of her, running around with a lamb in he arms. (Thank you atulsongaday for that video). She had taken leave of her filmi career when she was on the top, to be a wife and a mother. There was a fleeting glimpse of her in the 2009 Saif Ali Khan movie ‘Love Aaj Kal’ but ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ (2010) was the movie which brought her back on to the screen. In her latest movie ‘Besharam’ (2013) she is seen with her husband and son Ranbir Kapoor.

This sweet, charming and ever smiling beauty celebrates her 57th birthday on today (she is only that old, wow!!!!).  I present today a song from her debut movie where she is romancing Randhir Kapoor, to a song written by Anand Bakshi with RDB as the music director. Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar are the voices behind the actors. Have been hearing the songs of this movie for some time since morning and decided that they belong to our blog. The closing part of the video makes it look like the passenger is dreaming about romancing the Rickshawala.

So a very Happy birthday to Baby Sonia who became Neetu Singh and then Neetu Kapoor
