Nightingale Noorjehan -12

Here is a tuneful duet of Noorjehan and Surendra from the 1944 ‘Bombay Cinetone’ film ‘Lal Haveli’. The other duet, by the same pair, from this film, will follow soon on this blog. (Hari ichchha permitting.) Naushad’s Guru Meer Saheb has set the tunes to the simple lyrics of Shams Lakhnavi.

Surendra used to be known then, as Surendra Nath B.A., as in those days, very few educated persons would enter the film-world. (Though I, in spite of being an engineer, had ventured there.) As an accomplished singer, he was considered Bombay Filmworld’s be-fitting answer to Kolkata Filmword’s famous singer Kundanlal Saigal. Surendra had definitely pleasant voice and was hero in many musical movies, during that period.

In this duet, Noorjehan seems to have been completely enchanted by him, in spite of his half-closed eyes and expression-less straight face. (But who am I, to raise any objection to that?) I presume the endearing words praising her ‘sundar mukhada’ might have done the trick.

Let me congratulate Nitinbhai (our Nitin Shah) for contributing 900 lyrics to this blog, with this song. It must have been not easy to decipher song after song relentlessly for quite some time. It is no small feat. My personal experience while doing so, is to leave blanks when confronted with not clearly heard words. With your speed to capture songs from YT world, soon you are going to achieve the score of 1000!

Song–Mohaniya Sundar Mukhda Khol (Lal Haveli)(1944) Singers-Surendra, Noorjehaan, Lyrics-Shams Lakhnavi, MD- Meer Saheb

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

sundar mukhda khol
sundar mukhda khol
sundar mukhda khol
sundar mukhda khol
panchhi daar-daar naa dol
panchhi daar-daar naa dol

sundar mukhda khol
sundar mukhda khol

man ko ho kis tarah dilaasa
man ko ho kis tarah dilaasa
kuaan paas aur phir bhi pyaasa
kuaan paas aur phir bhi pyaasa
roop bada anmol o o ol
roop bada anmol o o ol

sundar mukhda khol
sundar mukhda khol

haal jo tera wohi hai mera aa
haal jo tera wohi hai mera aa
ek jagah donon ka basera aa
ek jagah dono ka basera

prem se amrit ghol o o ol
prem se amrit ghol
sundar mukhda khol
sundar mukhda

Bharat ji

Thanks for this informative post and for the nice song

Nitin ji

Congratulations on reaching 900th mark……….

Nitin ji,
Many thanks for 900 contributions.

Bharat ji,
Many thanks for the post.

I suppose Mukesh, Talat Mahmood et al. never got a chance to sing with Noorjahan. Was Jugnu the only film in which Rafi saab sang a duet with her or are there any other songs. Please enlighten.

@ Shah Saheb – Many Congratulations on 9th century … now waiting for the ‘1000Club’

@ Bharat Sir – thanks for bringing us the rare songs of Noor Jahan !!!

Thank everyone for the good wishes. It was elusive eighties and nervous nineties. Thanks

A rare gem of a song written by my father Shams Lucknowi. Great effort. Keep up the good work.
