Missing Films of 1960s – 3

A few days back, when Atul ji was in Delhi, we were together with our local group for an afternoon get together on the second day of his stay here. Atul ji has written about it in his report out with the song “Tu Jo Dil Le Ke Mere Peechhe Peechhe Aayega”. Javed Bhai, one of our group regulars started the topic about how many Hindi film songs are there, and whether we have already got most of them on the blog. To which Atul ji replied that as per Geet Kosh, we have approximately 44,000 songs listed for the first five decades of our film industry, i.e. from 1931 to 1980. Out of these, we a little over 11,000 songs on the blog so far, which works out to be 25% completion only. We have come here after a journey of about seven years. Going by this background, we surely are going to be pretty busy for many more years to come, just to get all the available songs till 1980, on to the blog.
Then he further commented that as we make progress, we are getting into a more uncharted territory. Majority of the well known and popular songs are already showcased here. Moving forward, the challenge is increased, as we are now working to identify, locate and post songs which are from obscure films, songs which were probably not played very often on the radio, and many songs that are possibly even unheard. Songs were recorded, the gramophone records were manufactured and released, but that did not got much further, because either the films did not do well and disappeared from public memory without a trace, or many films also did not get completed, and were shelved and abandoned, for various reasons.
So the going will start to get tougher as we tread further along in this journey. I know there are still a lot of songs available on the net that still have to find a place on our blog. But we must also realize that another huge lot of songs is probably not yet posted online anywhere. That is where we will now have to get down to some hard work (which has already started 🙂 ), which involves closely studying the list of films and their songs listed in the Geet Kosh, and then making efforts to track down the songs themselves, many of them as yet unpublished, unheard, and quite a few of them even lost probably by now.
This series is attempting to bring to the blog, as many films and songs from the 1960s, as possible. Films and songs that are not easily available. Information about them is obscure. Songs themselves are a rarity. And did I mention, difficult to track. 🙂
But there is two things that I am sure all of us will agree. Firstly, this tracking and searching is a lot of fun. Identifying the missing films, identifying the songs, and then poring through the online availability, checking with friends and other collectors around the country and around the world too. To me, it is a very exhilarating experience, when after trying for months, maybe years, one is able to lay hands on a rare song. The ‘Aa Haa’ factor in this discovery is really very gratifying.
The second aspect is the reward of this search. The efforts almost never go unrewarded. Because, we generally encounter such wonderful gems that have been lying obscure, or even unheard for decades. The artists who got together to create these songs, always gave their best. Their efforts were always to create a piece of music that would please the senses. And so, almost without fail, we come across songs that are real diamonds. And we never cease to wonder “why”. Why did songs like these never saw the light of the day, or metaphorically speaking, never felt the prick of the gramophone needle, or never did ride the airwaves, as many of their contemporaries.
I am reminded of a scene from film ‘Guide’ (1965). Marco (Kishore Sahu) is digging to find some lost temples near Udaipur. And he succeeds to unearth a new archeological site which potentially a historic find. Then there is a very interesting dialogue that happens between Marco and Raju, the guide (Dev Anand). Marco asks Raju – why does he (Raju) think, these temples were not discovered so far, why they were lying buried under sand for centuries? Because he, Marco, was destined to unearth them. It was his name, and his share of history that these hidden temples were waiting for all these centuries.
I am sure you have pre-empted my chain of thought. Yes, it is this blog, and this group of music lovers, under the leadership of ‘Raanchiwala Gaanewala’, that is destined to bring to light once again, these lost gems of the world of Hindi film music. It is our destiny, it is our place in history, it is the singular mark that this blog is ordained to accomplish. And the lines keep coming back to me, again and again,

And so, coming to the next un-represented film from 1961. Another obscure film, another name that is hidden in the dark bylanes – ‘Shola Jo Bhadke’. The information as per Geet Kosh – the film is produced under the banner of Bhagwan Brothers, Bombay, and is directed by Bhagwan. I am sure the title of this film is taken from the song of ‘Albela’ (1951), that has now attained iconic status. The film is indicated as a stunt film, whose cast of actors is listed as Suresh, Radhika, Anwar, Bhagwan, Helen, Cuckoo, Poornima, Suryakant, Pratima Devi, Kesri, Prem Sagar, Shyam Lal, Vishwas, and Ram Bharose. The music for the seven songs listed, is composed by Nisar Bazmi. Names of three songwriters are listed – Saba Afghani, Shyam Hindi, and Tavish Mehmood. However, the names of specific poet for specific songs, are not identified, except for one (not this one 🙂 ).
The singing voice is that of Suman Kalyanpur. The names of singers against individual songs are also not listed in Geet Kosh. The singer’s name information was confirmed to me by my collector friend Zafar Bhai.
And now, the time to listen to the song. I remember hearing this song on radio, ages ago, albeit very sparingly. And then, it just vanished into the by-lanes. A gem of a composition, rendered so beautifully by Suman ji.

About this movie-
I had seen the movie about 55 years ago, at Famous Cine lab., Tardeo, Mumbai. It was actually not a stunt movie, but it was about decoits & their reformation. A similar movie, with same type plot, ‘Muze Jeene Do’ was released at the same time & so nobody went to see this ‘Shola Jo Bhadke’. Actually it was a good, social, film.
As far as my memory is right, this movie was produced by Shankar Dada Palav, Bhagwan Dada’s brother. He was a good professional photographer. He was our good family friend & so he used to invite us for some private screenings of his films. Shankar Dada was a good social worker, too!

I am glad that there is still someone who has watched films of the early 60s.
I too have seen this film. I would not call it a film like Mujhe jeene do. MJD was an out and out decoit film,whereas in film Shola jo hadke-61, the struggle of a reformer Doctor-Vijaya , who works amidst Decoits and Tribals was shown. In the cast was Bhagwan and also Baburao Pahilwan,who acted as the Tribal chief and some stunts were also shown.
The film was from Bhagwan Brothers Ltd., a company in which finance was of Bhagwan and leg work was of Shankar,the cinematographer brother. The film was directed by Bhagwan only. In those days,though Bhagwan had no own money,still financers were ready to finance his films,on his name.

Would like to know more about the Music Director Nisar. His songs in
“Shola Jo Bhadke” is very good. I have two songs apart from what you have posted here. 1. Teri Kasam Ho Dilruba—Sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohammed Rafi. 2. Aisi Chal Na Chalo — Sung by Rafi and Usha Mangeshkar. Both these two songs and the one you posted now is of top quality. It is a wonder why Nisar did not get more films (?)
