Missing Films of 1960s – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Hmmm, that is interesting. As I review the list of missing films for 1962 prepared by Khyati Ben, then starting from ‘Baaje Ghunghroo’ (which was the last film we introduced in the previous segment of this series), I had to drop down to the seventh film below it (in alphabetical order) to reach a film for which songs are available. After ‘Baaje Ghunghroo’, the films listed are ‘Balidaan’, ‘Bapu Ne Kahaa Tha’, ‘Bijli Chamke Jamuna Paar’, ‘Deccan Queen’, ‘Durga Pooja’ and ‘Fakiron Ki Basti’ – six films for which songs are not traceable.
Film ‘Balidaan’ seems to have vanished without even a trace of information. Since it is listed in Geet Kosh, it must have been certified by censors and would have been released (else it should have been listed in the section for unreleased films). However, only the banner name is available – ‘Navbharat Chitra’.
The film ‘Bapu Ne Kaha Tha’ is produced by the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI). It is a biographical documentary on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, in which the late Shri Morarji Desai also made a brief appearance, speaking about Gandhi ji. The associated names are some of the stalwarts of Hindi cinema. Director is Vijay Bhatt, songwriter is Bhrart Vyas and music director is Avinash Vyas. Cast of actors includes names like Nana Palsikar, Jankidas, Narmada Shankar, Majnoo, Jugal Kishore, Munshi Munakka besides others. However, the film and its songs are not traceable, not even on the CFSI web site. Sadly, even the list of songs is not yet available anywhere.
The next three films – ‘Bijli Chamke Jamuna Paar’, ‘Deccan Queen’, and ‘Durga Pooja’ have full details listed in the Geet Kosh. And hence, yes, there is lot of information available on the internet . The music directors are SN Tripathi, Sardul Kwatra and Pt Shivram respectively. The lists of songs for these three films are available. However, neither the information about 78 rpm records, nor the songs themselves are available any where.
The film ‘Fakiron Ki Basti’ shares the same fate as ‘Balidaan’, discussed above. The banner is Ajit Singh Pictures. Beyond that, no other information and neither the songs are traceable.
That brings us to the film ‘Gangu’. It is a Sheikh Mukhtar film, and I am sure you will readily have an idea about what this film could be. Produced under the banner of Jai Art Pictures, Bombay, it is directed by Pramod Chaktravarty. The songs are written by Prem Dhawan and the music is by Kalyanji Anandji. Besides the Sheikh, the cast of actors includes Sulochana, Chandrashekhar, Naaz, Ulhas, Madan Puri, Bela Bose, Altaf, Mohan Choti, Ranjeet Kumar, Naazi, Rajan Kapoor, Hanuman, Amir Ali and more.
There are six songs in this film. I am a bit surprised that this film has not yet appeared on our blog. The list of songs makes quite a familiar reading. All the songs, as well as the complete film, are available online. And it should be good to see them appear here.
This song has two voices – Geeta Dutt and Suman Kalyanpur. It is kind of two songs in one. Maybe we should have a new category for such songs – ‘Two-In-One Songs’. This one has a mujra song and a lorie song combined into one. I am sure there are a few more such examples.
The mujra part of the song is sung by Geeta Dutt. I request other readers to please help identify the dancer. Is she Naazi? The performer on screen is a very young Bela Bose. (Thanks Prakash ji for the identification). Amongst those present for the performance we can easily identify Sheikh Mukhtar and Madan Puri. It appears that Sheikh Mukhtar is present ‘under duress’, as his mind and interest is obviously somewhere else, and the dancer is kind of restraining him to leave, with the words in the song that say
…jaate ho kahaan thehro
kehte hain nazaare
The mujra scenes are interspersed with a very traditional domestic scene in which a mother is singing a lorie as she is putting her child to sleep. On screen, Sulochana plays the mother, and is singing the slower paced lines with Suman Kalyanpur’s voice in the playback. The time is night. And it is interesting to note that both the dancing girl and the devoted mother are invoking the ‘chaand’ to express their emotions / intentions.
This song is another of the ones very familiar from the radio listening days, and I am sure it will strike the memory chords of the more regular listeners. Enjoy.

Song – Ye Mehki Mehki Raaten Ye Chaand Sitaare (Gangu) (1962) Singer – Geeta Dutt, Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Kalyanji Anandji
Lyrics
aaa aaaa aaaa
mehfil hai aaj rang mein
saaqi hai jaam hai
jab tak ye raat baaki hai
sona haraam hai
ye mehki mehki raaten
ye chaand sitaare
ye mehki mehki raaten
ye chaand sitaare
jaate ho kahaan thehro
jaate ho kahaan thehro
kehte hain nazaare
ye mehki mehki raaten
ye chaand sitaare
ye mehki mehki raaten
ye chaand sitaare
jaate ho kahaan thehro
jaate ho kahaan thehro
kehte hain nazaare
ye mehki mehki raaten
ye chaand sitaare
soya hai chanda
soye hain taare
so jaa re so jaa raaj dulaare
soya hai chanda
soye hain taare
so jaa re so jaa raaj dulaare
soya hai chanda
palkon pe utri hai
nindiya ki raani
nainon ko choome
sunaaye kahaani
nainon ko choome
sunaaye kahaani
baahon ka jhoola
mamta jhulaaye
so jaa re so jaa aankhon ke taare
soya hai chanda
aaaa aaaa aaaa
jeene ka raaz kya hai
tu nazren mila ke dekh
jannat hai tere saamne
palken utha ke dekh
ye mehki mehki raaten
ye chaand sitaare
ye mehki mehki raaten
ye chaand sitaare
jaate ho kahaan thehro
jaate ho kahaan thehro
kehte hain nazaare
ye mehki mehki raaten
ye chaand sitaare
jug jug jiye tu khushiyaan manaaye
meri umariya bhi tohey lag jaaye
meri umariya bhi tohey lag jaaye
poonam ka moti hai
jeevan ki Jyoti
so jaa re so jaa re praano ke pyaare
soya hai chanda
soye hain tare
so jaa re so jaa raaj dulaare
soya hai chanda

आ आ आ

Sudhirbhai,
Your comment ‘Maybe we should have a new category for such songs – ‘Two-In-One Songs’.’ struck a cord and immediately I recalled a duet by Lata and Asha in Daman, with Rajinder’s lyrics and K Datta’s music

Prakash ji,
Thanks for your input. I also felt that it could be Bela Bose, but was deterred because the list of actors in Geet Kosh does not contain her name.
Thanks again
