“Jaani Dushman”(1979) was produced and directed by Rajkumar Kohli. The movie had received enormous publicity before its release. It was a multistarrer movie, though the stars who mattered to be those days, viz. Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra did not figure in the movie. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Jeetendra, Premnath, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Amrish Puri, Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra, Bindiya Goswami, Sarika, Yogita Bali, Vikram, Aruna Irani, Raza Murad, Madan Puri, Sulochana, Shakti Kapoor, Paintal, Jagdeep, Roopesh Kumar, Shobhni Singh, JaiShree T, Indrani Mukherjee, Neeta Metha, Anwar Hussan, Sheetal, Aarti, Maruti, Mac Mohan, Rakesh Roshan, Neeta Mehta etc in it.

The movie was also in the news for its problems with censors. The movie was supposedly a horror movie and the censors felt that the movie was not fit for people with feeble hearts. so the movie was released with several cuts and with an A certificate.

I watched this movie in a movie hall in night show and I found the supposedly horror scenes as plain silly. And I was not quite an Adult in 1979 when I watched this movie. Well, I belonged to that part of the counrty where people did not bother much for such minor details. 🙂 And in any case, the horror scenes were plain childish and they could not have scared even a kid. If these scenes scared the censor boast members then I guess that those members had real faint hearts indeed. 🙂

The movie was finally liked by people not for its “horror” (lack there of) but for its songs. “Chalo re doli uthhaao kahaar” became the next big iconic bidaai song after “Baabul ki duaayen leti jaa” that was created one decade ago. “Jaani Dushman”(1979), a “horror” movie being remembered for its “bidaai” song- I find it quite hilarious.

One song from this movie has been discussed in the past. Here is the second song from “Jaani Dushman”(1979) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The song was picturised on Jeetendra and Neetu Singh.

Song-O meri jaan bol meri jaan (Jaani Dushman)(1979) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Lyrics-Verma Malik, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

o ho
ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho
hey hey hey

o meri jaan
bol meri jaan
arre o meri jaan
arre bol meri jaan
teri aankhon ne jaane kya jaadu kiya
main bhi gaya
mera dil bhi gaya
o meri jaan
bol meri jaan
o meri jaan
arre bol meri jaan
tu neendon mein sapne piro gaya
us din se mujhe kuchh ho gaya

o meri jaan
bol meri jaan
arre o meri jaan
arre bol meri jaan
teri aankhon ne jaane kya jaadu kiya
main bhi gaya
mera dil bhi gaya

pyaar jo kiya hai to bhulaana na mujhe
chhod jaana na mujhe
tadpaana na mujhe
na chhodna mujhe
tadpaana na mujhe
pyaar jo kiya hai to bhulaana na mujhe
chhod jaana na mujhe
tadpaana na mujhe

mere pyaar ko hai tera aasra
aabad tujhse hai mera jahaan
o meri jaan
arre bol meri jaan
o meri jaan
o bol meri jaan
tu neendon mein sapne piro gaya
us din se mujhe kuchh ho gaya

har ghadi mujhe ab yahi kaam hai
teri yaad hai ya tera naam hai
ya teri yaad hai
ya tera naam hai
har ghadi mujhe ab yahi kaam hai
teri yaad hai ya tera naam hai

tere milne se dhadkan ne angdaayi li
dil ki tamanna huyi hai jawaan
o meri jaan
bol meri jaan
arre o meri jaan
arre bol meri jaan
teri aankhon ne jaane kya jaadu kiya
main bhi gaya mera dil bhi gaya

khul gaye zindagi ke naye raaste
tu mere waaste main tere waaste
tu mere waaste
main tere waaste
khul gaye zindagi ke naye raaste
tu mere waaste
main tere waaste

ae muhabbat ke maalik tera shukriya
samjho agar mere dil ki zubaan
o meri jaan
arre bol meri jaan
o meri jaan
arre bol meri jaan
tu neendon mein sapne piro gaya
teri aankhon ne jaane kya jaadu kiya
main bhi gaya mera dil bhi gaya

In 1979, I was JUST turning adult so it was ok for me to see the movie. I loved it for all the rollicking songs. My favorite was Tere hathon me pehna ke churian. It was more of a suspense film, who is the monster! So many stars in the movie! And so many deaths! Till date I don’t remember who lives and who dies.

But I always have fond memories of this movie. I saw it recently on TV, it was still fun!
