GUL-E-BAKAWALI (1956) was the Hindi dubbed version of Tamil film ‘Gulebakavali’ (1955) which was produced and directed by T R Ramanna. The star cast of the film included M G Ramchandran, T R Rajkumari, G. Varalakshmi, Rajasulochana, S D Subbulakshmi, E V Saroja, K A Thangavelu, J P Chandrababu etc. The film has the usual fantasy and adventure story befitting the roles that M G Ramchandran is known for. The Tamil version had 11 songs composed by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy. Hindi dubbed version had 8 songs written by P L Santoshi (7) and Indeevar (1) which were composed by Gyan Dutt. However, the tunes used in the Tamil version were retained in all the eight songs.
It is said that all the songs in the Tamil version were hits. But the most popular song was the song mayakkum maalai polithey sung by Jikki ( real name: P G Krishnaveni) and A M Rajah, the husband and the wife combination. I am presenting the Hindi version of the same song ‘meraa kahaan hai man meraa wo to’ sung by Jikki and Talat Mehmood. The song was written by Indeevar which was set to music by Gyan Dutt. Being a dubbed film, it is evident from the video clip of the song that the soundtrack of the Hindi version of the song was superimposed on the Tamil version. By the way, Jikki also sang two songs in ‘Ek Thha Raja’ (1951), one song in ‘Paataal Bhairvai’ (1952), 4 songs in ‘Mr Sampat’ (1952) and one song in ‘Ram Aur Rahim’ (1968).
There is an interesting anecdote about the tune of the song under discussion. The tune was originally composed by K. V. Mahadevan who was the music director for the Tamil film ‘Koondukkili’ pronounced as ‘Goondukkili’ (1954) starring M G Ramchandran and Sivaji Ganesan. However the producer-director T R Ramanna found it difficult to decide as to whom the song should be picturised as both MGR and Sivaji Ganesan were staking claims on the song for its picturisation on them. Since the film was getting delayed, Ramanna decided not to picturise the song. He, however, got the opportunity to use the tune in ‘Gulebakavali’ (1955) which was sung by Jikki and A. M. Rajah and picturised on Varalakshmi and MGR. [Source: THE HINDU, October 30, 2010].
So the tune of the song does not belong to Gyan Dutt or Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy but to K V Mahadevan. But the credit is given to Gyan Dutt for the Hindi version and for Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy for the Tamil version. The tune is pleasing to the ears.
With this song, ‘Gul-E-Bakawali’ (1956) makes its debut in the Blog.
With this song, Indeewar completes 200 lyrics in the blog as a lyricist.
