Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 05
—————————————————-
‘I live in Australia,’ he said, which wasn’t really an answer. He turned away from her and looked out to sea, changed the subject along with the mood. ‘The sunsets are spectacular here,’ he said, because they were.

Whatever he felt about the island, that much at least was true.

‘The sun doesn’t set,’ she said. He turned again to look at her, but she did not return his gaze, just stared out into the distance. ‘It’s just an illusion. We’re the ones moving.’ Now she did turn, saw him frown and she smiled. ‘It messed with my head a bit when I read it, but it’s obvious really—given that the sun never moves.’

He looked back at the ocean, to another truth that was a lie, to a different way of thinking, and it messed with his head too.

‘But, yes,’ she said, ‘it’s very beautiful.’

And they sat in silence, with separate thoughts but more comfortably together. Usually when she looked to the sky she wanted to be up there, just not this evening, not this time, for now, in this moment, she was happy where she was. Then, when he stood and offered his hand, she took it, let him lead her back, and they walked ankle deep through the lapping water and she was glad to be beside him.

————————–x——————————–x——————

Yes I can understand the ‘messing with the head’ concept here. One is so used to the sun setting and it rising again the next morning, that the the geographical/astronomical fact of sun being too far away for its movements to have great a role to play in the sunsets and rises on earth, is hardly ever recognized. It is the earth which rotates, that creates the illusion of setting and rising of the sun.
It just simply is there happening everyday. We are not paying enough attention to it to bring it closer to us every day. But it is part of us everyday. Just like getting used to people around us, who help us on daily basis, and assist us and make our day a bit easier to get through.

I had mentioned my “Domestic help” as a ‘rehmat ka farishta’ in one my earlier posts too, where I described her as reliable but not dependable. No generalising here, since people are more complex, then sunsets. Believe it or not I trusted her in a lot of ways and things. The association lasted for more than 5 years. She did not appear, behave like a ‘maid’ was more or less treated like a family member. All the guests and visitors to the household, mine as well as my mothers, know her well. She is also good with the kids and looked after them well. The problem always was that she was neither a live in, nor she ever worked for us exclusively. I kept advising her not to take up too much work in many households, so as to keep her efficiency and attention to details, intact. I kept increasing her pay as well as change her work timings, to help her accomodate her other jobs. Since everyone in the building, neighbors and friends knew about her equation with me no one wanted to rock the boat. It is possible that I was trusting her to the extent it benefited me, I am cynical and realist enough to accept that. But I am surrounded by people in my family who go around wearing colour tinted glasses and the world appears rosy to them, especially my mother and it was my mother who was warning me about her for sometime. She kept telling me not to believe all that she tells me.

Like all good things, this association also had run its course and came to an end. A simple breach of trust, a thing so useless, it did not benefit her much nor did it cause me much harm. As lies go, one tends to ignore them, the ones that are small and trivial for expediency. But a big lie with the intention to deceive in not so easy to ignore. As I discovered the deception, I kept thinking how can she do such a thing to us ? why would she do this ? how does she expect the deception will last ? why she is not considering the long/short term consequences ? It became so stressful that I lost all faith in her and having all sort of doubts about her intentions. I lost objectivity in a way and started imagining her deceptions could have criminal intent. Because domestic crimes do result from such simple lies deceptions. She had been telling me lies to manipulate and keep my trust and be in my goods books. Simple human needs. Having put in so much thought and energy is creating a net of lies, half lies, half truths and sometimes dimply dodging and not saying much, in other words being economical with the truth, she has taught me a few lessons on how not to believe in people. She used her own lies to open up the opportunity to deceive us for a short term gain.

Finally, I could not take the stress and had to remove her. I told her that I have forgiven her and dont have any grudges against her and that she should not think bad thoughts about us too. But I could not tolerate the liar and manipulator in her, however good she was in her work. After returning from Umrah I employed other domestic helps, with some changes and adjustments things were settling down at home by the time Ramadhan began. So much so that we employed the same maid on part time basis for the duration of Ramadhan as additional help in the evening for ‘Iftaar’ preparation. This was mainly my mother’s doing again, as she insisted, that the maid is very sorry and repentant. Since my parents and us were doing the ‘iftaar’ together, this thing worked out well.

Right after the eid, we all went away to Belgaum to attend wedding celebration of my two cousins children. Amids all this I planned a vacation alongwith my younger sister who had arrived from abroad with her family. After a lot of adjustments and re-planning we went ahead with the vacation right after the weddings. The destination is an exotic scenic place within Karnataka. The holiday story is better held off till the next post as this post has become too long and I havent even touched the song being posted here.

The song I am posting here is from the film ‘Harjaee’ (1981). I remember hearing a 10 minutes sponsored programme of this film on Vividh Bharti on sunday afternoons. I had remembered the title song by Kishore Kumar ‘yeh rut hai haseen dard bhi hai jawaan’ from this movie but not this duet by Rafi & Chandrashekhar Gadgil. Having found it in the excel sheet of Rai songs, this link was waiting in my drafts for its turn to post. Another melodious song ‘tere liye palkon ki jhaalar bunoon’ is the sole posted in the blog.

The lyricist is Nida Fazli and composer is R. D. Burman. This was an R. K. Films Productions, and would appear to be only instance when R. D. Burman is composing for RK films, but I am not sure.

I think RDB composed only Dharam Karam for RK Films.
This film too was produced by Sonkar Films Pvt. Ltd.

A nice song indeed with Sufi touch.
I had seen the movie but did not pay much attention to it then or thereafter.
At first, I was a little perplexed that how come an apparent chaste Sanskrit expression ” Me Raksham” was used by Nida Fazli. When I listened to the song and seen the lyrics, it transpired that the correct words were ” Me Raqsam” and not as used in the heading of the post.
Atul ji may please consider whether or not make the necessary amendments.
Thanks and regards to Nahm ji for the post.

RDB also composed Biwi O Biwi for RK films.

Yes. You are right. Thanks.

Right about ‘Biwi O Biwi’. Maybe I confused both ‘Harjaayi’ and ‘Biwi O bIwi’ and their sponsored programme on Vividh Bharti. Randhir Kapoor was common between these two movies.
