5th June is celebrated as ‘World Environment Day’ all over the world every year. The theme for this year is “Connecting People to Nature“.
I am approaching today’s post in a different manner. Instead of going into the details of the environmental agencies, their history and purpose, the significant environmental issues being faced by humanity on this planet, etc. I am thinking of our Hindi films and their music. The nature is so intimately connected herein. We cannot imagine our Hindi Film Music without ‘connecting with nature’.
So here I am trying to ‘connect with Nature’ with these beautiful ‘verses’ (taken from some of the memorable songs / poems / lyrics of Hindi films) and pray God that
May the earth be beautiful and
May the nature be bountiful
For the mankind, today
And generations to follow
Forever
The Hindi film song is the ultimate in the variety of just everything under the sun. Just thinking of nature and thinking of environment, there will zip through the mind, countless melodies and snippets of songs. And they moved so fast and so thick, that I am not able to capture them all. As quick as I could jot them down, as they sped past the vantage point in the mind, I make a connect yet once again with these memorable celebrations of the nature and all its elements – the rivers, the oceans, the trees, the mountains, the seasons, the birds, the flowers, the winds, the farmlands. . . you think of it, and there is a song for it in our films. And it makes me wonder, really wonder. . .

Yes, there is something that needs to be said, there is a message of care, of caution that needs to be sent out. And that message is contained in the verses below, from the film ‘Pyaasa’ (1957).
The foot that tramples the innocent bumblebee. . . don’t let that foot be yours. Let this legacy remain for the generations to come.

Wow, what a list – and like you say, there are many many more songs that refer to nature. In fact, many songs take inspiration from it. Given the fragility of our ecosystem, we can choose to ignore nature only at our own peril. Bangalore alone could be a lesson for many other parts of India.
Anyway, thanks for this reminder, Avinashji. And this song. It is a few lines only – and rarely talked about, but these are precious lines. Thank you.
