Today , the 20th of June, is a special day for us Atulites.
What’s so special about it, you ask?
Well, he who celebrates the birthdays of so many artistes here (and has an anniversary page on the blog) just happens to have been born on this date, a few summers ago.
Yes, today is the birthday of Atul, the creator of this much-loved, eponymously named, blog. Hai na special day?
So Atul, let me start this post by wishing you a very very happy birthday and many many happy ones to come!
Hmm….
I have a confession to make. Something I am somewhat ashamed about.
In all these years, I have always remembered some dates. I’ve always remembered Rafisaab’s birth and death anniversary dates, for example. And Sahir’s.
I’ve always remembered this blog’s birthday.
And I’ve always remembered Atul’s birthday.
That is, until this time.
This time, somehow it just slipped my mind. Of late, I’ve been very forgetful, I’ve been making silly mistakes. Not just silly, even costly ones. Recently I booked flight tickets for wrong dates – and then, on realizing this, had to buy new tickets again for the right dates. I lost all the money on the earlier-booked tickets (it was one of those non-refundable types) – a sheer waste. But it was entirely my fault because I had not been careful enough to check, while booking.
Anyway, back on topic. I’d lost track that we were approaching 20th June, i.e, Atul’s birthday.
Luckily Arunji reminded me of this a couple of days ago, in case I wanted to write a post on the occasion. Of course, I did! So thank you, Arunji, for the reminder!
Atul, I’ve written many posts here over the years about you, the blog, how we met, the cricket forum etc – I will spare the readers the ordeal of having to go through all of that again. 🙂
I will say one thing though – you are one of a very rare breed of persons and I consider myself privileged to know you.
This blog is probably the best embodiment of the various qualities you possess in ample measure.
And what are these qualities?
First, dedication and discipline. It’s not very difficult to start a blog – many people do it out of initial enthusiasm. It’s MUCH more difficult to keep it going. That explains why most blogs become like inactive bank accounts.
But this blog is going on for almost 9 years now. And how! Multiple updates every single day. Is this possible at all without absolute dedication to the task? And without a totally disciplined approach? I don’t think so.
Second, thoroughness. Whatever you do, you do it “poore dil-o-dimaag se”. No half-measures. Thoroughly professional approach. With great attention to detail.
Remember I’d asked jokingly in a previous post “are you sure you are Indian? 🙂 That’s because Indians are notorious for taking the easy way out, without putting in the hard work to do a high-quality job. Jaise taise ho jaana chaahiye. Copy karo kahin aur se, jugaad karo, kuchh bhi karo, bas ho jaana chaahiye.
That explains why there are so many me-too lyrics sites out there on the net. Mistakes on one get propagated shamelessly onto the others. But this blog? No compromises. You take extra effort to ensure every bit of detail is accurate, you listen to (sometimes scarcely audible) audio repeatedly trying to nail it down. That’s dedication, for sure – but it’s also thoroughness.
Third, respect & humility. Again here, I use the blog as an example. Over the years, many have joined the blog bandwagon. Not just as readers, but also as contributors in different capacities. We all love this blog and are happy to be part of its growth.
As creator of the blog, you could very easily have taken a superior position on this – after all, it is your blog. But you’ve embraced everyone warmly, without any ego and showing respect to one and all. That has helped everyone feel that it is not one person’s blog, it is OUR blog, our COLLECTIVE blog. We all feel part of this Atulite family, fiercely proud of the blog.
Also, you don’t claim knowledge as ultimate authority on a topic on the blog. You’re happy to admit you don’t know a detail, or you might be wrong. After all, that’s how we learn more. That’s a sign of humility, something I value.
Fourth, a sense of humour. Another thing I like a lot. This is something I realized long back, even before the blog came into existence. Remember those one-liners you used to come up with on our cricket forum, which I gave a name – Atulism? Well, you continue with those on the blog here. Which is one reason your posts are fun to read. There’s invariably the odd Atulism in there, even if you might not realize it yourself. 🙂
Fifth, eagerness to learn and improve. I touched on this earlier but I want to mention this separately too. I remember the days before you started blogging. It was new territory for you – but you plunged into it, learning wordpress features, experimenting with it, adding various widgets and all that. You’ve been constantly looking at ways to improve the blog –I’ve been witness to every single one of the improvements on the blog since its inception.
Each one has raised the bar that much more.
I can go on – and talk about more qualities, like your love for animals, and so on. But for now, I will stop here and move on to the song for today.
I was wondering which song to pick. And then remembered that, a couple of months ago, you had sent me a request to post “neela aasmaan” from Silsila (1981) here. It is the only remaining song from this film to be posted here, and you wanted to get it Yippeeed.
You’d told me to do it at my convenience – and, to be honest, it had slipped my mind. (I told you, I’ve become very forgetful of late).
Anyway, I remembered it just now, so I decided I’d fulfil this request, so that we have a birthday post for you AND a Yippeeed song.
So here is “neela aasmaan”.
This is my third Silsila song on the blog. I’d earlier posted “dekha ek khwab” and “pehli pehli baar”.
All the songs of Silsila are quite well-known. The film itself didn’t do too well on release – at least not as well as anticipated. It was a much-publicised and eagerly awaited film at the time, given its cast and storyline.
First, Jaya Bachchan was returning to acting. She had “retired” for a bit but had been persuaded to return for this film.
Then, the Amitabh-Rekha rumours. They were at their height at this time, and so a film with Amitabh, Rekha and Jaya was bound to kindle curiosity amongst film lovers.
Then, the storyline. In this film, though Amitabh marries Jaya (due to circumstances, not out of love), he still carries a torch for Rekha, who he had loved before marriage. He had never got over it. Given the rumours, this seemed to many to be too close to real life, adding to spice for the film.
Inspite of all this going for it, the film didn’t do too well at the box-office. More recently, it has probably gained some sort of iconic status but at that time, it got mixed reviews. I didn’t see it then – I got to see it much later. But I remember some people telling me at that time that they didn’t like the “rang barse” scene at all. Society then (probably even now) didn’t take too kindly to situations where a man is openly and publicly flirting with his friend’s wife, even if he’s got the excuse of being under the influence of bhang.
But, leaving all that aside, and looking at the songs alone, I think Silsila’s music scores. Those were not the greatest of times for HFM – especially if you’re looking for melody. In that relative desert, Silsila stands out as an oasis. Shiv-Hari (Shiv Kumar Sharma – Hariprasad Chaurasia) brought their individual brilliance together to the table,to compose some very pleasant tunes.
“Neela aasmaan” is a multiple version song. The male version, sung by Amitabh, is during happier times, when he and Rekha are romancing. The female version, sung by Lata and picturised on Rekha, is her response to the shocking news of Amitabh’s marriage. Her whole world has turned upside down at this news.
In those days, Amitabh used to try his hand at singing. He was such a big star that the audience would lap up anything he did. His song “mere paas aao mere doston” for Mr. Natwarlal (1979) was very popular. As was “mere angne mein” from Laawaris (1981). His rendition of “neela aasmaan” was popular in its own way.
I’ve heard this song many times but till today I had not quite paid much attention to the lyrics. Only when I was noting down the lyrics for this post, I realize that they are quite nice, especially the Lata version. This was Javed Akhtar, writing lyrics for the first time in films. Sahir, otherwise the Chopra family regular, had passed away in 1980.
With that, I leave you to listen to this song – both versions. Personally I prefer the Lata version.

It’s not only you Raja ji, me too is feeling ashamed of that I forget to wish Atul ji since morning, or rather yesterday late evening.
The weekend party and Monday priorities take it all. But that should not be the reason because till Friday evening I was aware of this approaching.

I was under the impression that this song was written by Sahir until I read in your post that it was Javed Akhtar. After going through the lyrics, I feel, Sahir’s influence is very much in evidence – romance and its fall out related with the nature.

Nice post, Raja. I did not know you did the write up for Pehli Pehli baar. I really would like to read that. Knowing how you dislike the Amit-Rekha combo, I am curious to see what you made of it.
What I have against this movie is the slow tempo. Otherwise, it explores a relation that is usually given to an outright Villain-ish characters. Rekha is not seen as a bad woman at all. Amit and Rekha are just victims of circumstance who realize that they have an affection for their spouses that is deeper than their passion for each other.

Belated Birthday wishes Atul ji :). YIPPEEEE!! to one of my favourite movies.. Silsila (1981).. but i just messaged Sudhir ji.. that there are 2 more less known songs in the movie left to be discussed.. Bahan Jinah Di Pakdiye by Ragi Harbans Singh and Khud Se Jo Wada Kiya Tha by Pamela Chopra.
By the way.. a trivia about Neela Aasmaan I saw on the Wiki page for Silsila (1981).. According to music expert Rajesh Subramanian, the tune of “Neela Aasman So Gaya” was actually composed by Shammi Kapoor. Kapoor made Bachchan hear it on the sets of Zameer. Bachchan suggested it to Yash Chopra, who incorporated it in Silsila. (Is this true?)
