Today (7 august 2017) is the festival of Raakhi aka rakshabandhan. This festival is being celebrated from time immemorial, may be for more than two thousand years or so. Some interesting tales regarding this festival are mentioned in various sources. It would see that amulets were tied by women on men (not necessarily their brothers) for mens’ protection in ancient times. It was later that this practice took the present day form of sisters tying it on brothers’ wrist.

This is the tenth rakshbandhan festival for this blog ! How time has flown ! I still remember the first occasion of Rakshabandhan in this blog which fell on 16 august 2008. I had especially discussed the song Bhaiyya mere raakhi ke bandhan ko nibhaana(Chhoti Bahan)(1959). This blog, which till then had daily visitors in two figures, got visitors in three figures for the first time ! 296 visitors visited the blog that day which was a big deal for the blog at that time. Now of course we get many more visitors these days days and we are now on the verge of clocking one crore (ten millions) visitors in the blog.

We have been discussing Rakhi related songs in the blog on every rakhi festival occasions. We have covered all the well known rakhi festival songs. We have slso lesser known as well as obscure songs related to this festival. Overall, 22 Rakhi festival songs have been covered in the blog till now.

We have not run out of songs of this occasion. In fact, there have been songs that I have been planning to discuss on the past occasion but I was unable to do so for one reason or the other.

For instance, the Rakhi festival song from “Rishta Kaaghaz Ka”(1983) was earmarked by me for posting on the rakhi festival day on 10 august 2014 itself, but for some reason I was not able to do so. This song was under consideration for posting on the net occasions as well.

“Rishta Kaaghaz Ka”(1983) was produced and directed by Ajay Goel for Goel Cine Corporation. The movie had
Nutan, Suresh Oberoi, Master Raju Shrestha, Rati Agnihotri, Raj Babbar, Gajanan Jagirdar, Neeta Mehta, Johnny Walker, Iftekhar, Sudhir, Urmila Bhatt, Jagdish Raj, Sudha Chopra, Brahm Bhardwaj etc in it.

Now finally this Rakhi song from “Rishta Kaaghaz Ka”(1983) makes its appearance in the blog on the rakhi festival occasion of 2017. Like the debut Rakhi song in the blog, this song too is sung by Lata. But while the iconic “Chhoti Bahan” (1959) Rakhi song was picturised on chhoti bahan Nanda tying Raakhi on her elder brothers, here we find Nutan tying raakhi on her chhota bhai, played by Master Raju. Gajanan Jagirdar, Suresh Oberoi, Urmila Bhatt and Brahm Bhardwaj are also visible in the picturisation.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

I am thankful to Prakashchandra who sent this song in 2014 and kept reminding me about this Rakhi festival song on every subsequent occasions as well without feeling bitter or disappointed. There are many more Rakhi festival songs that he has sent me. While I will try to cover some more songs today leave me with Rakhi songs for future use as well 🙂

I take this opportunity to greet one and all on the occasion of this festival.

Song-Chhota sa bhaiyya hamaara (Rishta Kaaghaz Ka)(1983) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm
chhotaa saa bhaiyya hamaaraa
behnaa ke dil ka dulaaraa
chhotaa saa bhaiyya hamaaraa
behnaa ke dil ka dulaaraa
sooraj ne dekhaa
chandaa ne dekhaa
sabko lagey kitnaa pyaaraa
chhotaa saa bhaiyya hamaaraa
behnaa ke dil ka dulaaraa

tu hi toh hai meri duniyaa
kaise ye chhootegi
tu hi toh hai meri duniyaa
kaise ye chhootegi
bhai behan ke milan ki ee
dori na tootegi
jag mein kahin rahe tu
doongi main tujhko sahaaraa
chhotaa saa bhaiyya hamaaraa
behnaa ke dil ka dulaaraa

hogaa badaa jis din tu
lekar duaa meri
hogaa badaa jis din tu
lekar duaa meri
pyaar se charchaa karegaa
saaraa zamaanaa teri
kadmon ke neeche hogaa
duniyaa ka doojaa kinaaraa
chhotaa saa bhaiyya hamaaraa
behnaa ke dil ka dulaaraa
sooraj ne dekhaa
chandaa ne dekhaa
sabko lagey kitnaa pyaaraa
chhotaa saa bhaiyya hamaaraa
behnaa ke dil ka dulaaraa
