Hullo Atuldom
We are into the last month of 2021. This is my first post for the month, and we have a few super-actors celebrating their birthdays this month. Also, there are a few actors, who are no longer amidst us, whose birth anniversaries are in December. Here is hoping that I get the inspiration to write for each of those dates.
But today’s birthday is not of any well known film star. It is our very own Ben Katie’s birthday. We wish her a very Happy and Musical day. May we see more of her on the blog-space.
This post sees the 2002 released, Rahul Dholakia directed, Neeraj Vora written (dialogues), Kishore Dadlaney- Lal Dadlaney produced romantic-comedy “Kehtaa Hai Dil Baar Baar” making its debut on the blog. It had songs written by Sameer which were tuned by Jatin-Lalit.
It had a cast headed by Paresh Rawal who played an egoistic, over possessive father to two lovely daughters. There is a lot of Mayhem when he discovers that one of his daughters (Kim Sharma, a doctor in the film) declares that she is in love with a man who is not a “Patel”. Further investigation by the father reveals that the prospective son-in-law (Jimmy Shergill) is neither a property-owner nor a professional. As if that was not enough to ruffle the fuming father’s feathers it turns out that the person is a mixed-blood Indian viz. part-Punjabi, part- South Indian (“Madrasi” as people who are unaware of the different states in south of India would like to say). This leads to a lot of hot-weather between Jimmy and Paresh Rawal which is definitely entertaining and I must say that it didn’t look ‘gross’.
I remember (vaguely) that there is a scene in the movie where Patel (Paresh Rawal) is shown to be organizing the catering for his other daughter’s (Namrata- played by Toral Mehta) wedding. That scene helps establish the kind of calculative mindset of ‘Roger Patel’ possesses. By the way, ‘Roger Patel’ is the Americanized version of Ranchod Rai Patel who likes to call himself ‘The Roger Patel’.
Neena Kulkarni, Ranjeet, Johnny Lever were also part of the cast. Today’s song shows us Neena Kulkarni- the loving mother- leading a set that approves of the match between Kim and Jimmy. The lively song has Gujarati and Punjabi words and even the tune has flavour of both the states. We can see Paresh Rawal is unmoved (he is one versatile actor, isn’t he? 🙂
This song shows us what potential Jimmy Shergill had and could have been a success in commercial movies too considering the handsome looks and sense of rhythm as far as dance is concerned. He was very good in displaying his emotions too as could be seen in the characters he played in movies like the Gulzar directed “Maachis” (1996), Yash Chopra’s “Mohabbatein” (2000) and some more from the Yash Raj stable.
Recently I had seen him in movies like “Happy Bhag Jayegi” (2016) and its sequel “Happy Phirr Bhag Jaayegi” (2018) both of which showcased his comic timing. I must admit that I liked what little I have seen of him in movies.
Incidentally, 3rd December happens to be his 51st birthday -here is wishing him lots of luck and good movies that allow him to show his full talent. By the way, he belongs to a family of immense talent. His paternal great aunt was the famous Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil.
This song is in the vocals of Udit Narayan and Shraddha Pandit (some sites have mentioned that Poornima is the female playback, need confirmation).
Let us also wish Udit Narayan (belated, he turned a year older on 1st December). He has been in the music industry since 1980. He has had opportunity to sing with the legends Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar. Success came his way after a long struggle, in 1988 to be exact, when ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ from ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ ruled the air-waves and popularity charts.
He began his singing on Radio Nepal with Maithili and Nepali songs. He moved to Mumbai in the 80s and his debut was in the 1980 release ‘Unees Bees’ which had Rajesh Roshan wielding the baton, this was the song where he got to sing with Mohd Rafi. He has sung for even Dev Anand in ‘Swami Dada’. He is the recipient of 4 National Awards, 5 Filmfare Awards, and Padma Shri.
I am sure the followers of the blog will understand why I chose this song to go with this post. 🙂
Once again wishing our Ben Katie – naamkaran for Khyatiji done by our Sudhirji- a Very Happy Birthday.

1)On the CD cover of the movie this song was credited to SHARDHA & Udit Narayan (“Dikri Amhari”)
&
2)Credit sequences mentions her name as “SHRADDHA PANDIT”
Shraddha Pandit is the daughter of Music directors Jatin Lalit and
her other notable songs
“Gaathe the pehle akele” from Khamoshi the musical(1996)
“Dil ka qaraar kho gaya” Sanghursh(1999)
“Aei shivani” from Khoobsurat(1999)
“Sweety tera drama” from Bareilly ki barfi
(so Poornima`s name is not at all comes with this movie)
(This film was promoted as the first Hindi film to be shot completely in the USA)

Dear Peevesie’s Mom,
Your’s was like a breath of fresh air in the early morning! Simply put but covers a lot and the Song itself was the icing on the cake!
About Paresh Rawal, he is not simply great, but the GREATEST, of all time!
Recall having seen the Film on TV sometime ago. Really enjoyable.
Thanks for making my day and wish the best to Ben Katie too.
Pl keep them coming – looking forward to your next.
With warm regards

As will be known to most, the tune is a copy of Amir Khusro’s famous Composition छाप तिलक सब छीनी रे मोसे नैना मिलाइके, here rendered by Naheed Akhtar
