Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 28
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Seems to be like another life time, that we have been waiting, and calling out for you, in the wilderness of nowhere. Alas, but it is not to be. . .

– – – –

Really spoilt for choices with the letter ‘य’. And I settle for this delightful twosome of a song – Geeta Dutt with Rafi Sb. The film is an obscure ‘Doctor Z’ from 1959. Produced and directed by Jaal, the films comes from the banner of Baliwala Films, Bombay. The star cast of this film is listed as Shakeela, Mahipal, Heeralal, Helen, Vinod Diwani, Krishna Kumari, Sundar, Mirza Musharraf, Dalpat, Tuntun, Nasreen, Shetty, Bhudo Advani, Homi, Rusi, Bismillah, Baburao Pehalwan, Radheshyam, Rafiq, Hanuman, Bala Ram, Dhondu, MK Hasan, Karandiker, and Sheetal Kumar.

The film has total of eight songs listed, out which, two songs, as per the Geet Kosh, are probably not released on gramophone records. The songs have been written by Akhtar Romani, and the music is by Manohar. This Manohar is the blind music director Manohar Lal Sonik, who was the senior partner in the team of music director duo – Sonik-Omi.

One song of this film is already present on our blog. It was posted on 9th Nov, 2011. And today, after almost full seven years, the second song of this film finds its place here.

The singing voices are of Rafi Sb, accompanied by Geeta Dutt. A delightful duet presented as a conversation between lovers, it is quite a treat to hear to this song. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Ye Bheegi Bheegi Raat Gagan Par Taaron Ki Baraat  (Doctor Z) (1959) Singer – Geeta Dutt, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Akhtar Romani, MD – Manohar
Geeta Dutt + Mohammed Rafi

Lyrics

ye bheegi bheegi raat
gagan par taaron ki baraat
chali kis paar hai
zara dil par rakh kar haath
bata de aise mein ye baat
ke kitna pyaar hai
ye bheegi bheegi raat
gagan par taaron ki baraat
chali kis paar hai
zara dil par rakh kar haath
bata de aise mein ye baat
ke kitna pyaar hai

o ho ho ho ho ho
o ho ho ho ho ho
o ho ho ho ho ho
ho ho..oo ho ho..oo

bhatke huye musaafir
manzil ko pa hi gaye
ulfat ke do safeene
saahil pea aa hi gaye
bhatke huye musaafir
manzil ko pa hi gaye
ulfat ke do safeene
saahil pea aa hi gaye
main kaise kahoon ye baat
ke aata sapnon mein har raat
koi dildaar hai
zara dil par rakh kar haath
bata de aise mein ye baat
ke kitna pyaar hai

jitna haseen hai mausam
utna hi tu bhi haseen
jee chaahe aaj ruk jaaye
saara zamaana yahin
jitna haseen hai mausam
utna hi tu bhi haseen
jee chaahe aaj ruk jaaye
saara zamaana yahin
de haat mein mere haath
ke chhoote ab na kabhi ye saath
yahi iqraar hai
ye kitni badi hai baat
ke tujhko pyaar hai mere saath
ke du dildaar hai
zara dil par rakh kar haath
bata de aise mein ye baat
ke kitna pyaar hai

ye bheegi bheegi raat
gagan par taaron ki baraat
chali kis paar hai
aa haa
zara dil par rakh kar haath
bata de aise mein ye baat
ke kitna pyaar hai

o ho ho ho ho ho
o ho ho ho ho ho
o ho ho ho ho ho
ho ho..oo ho ho..oo
ho ho..oo ho ho..oo
ho ho..oo ho ho..oo

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 27
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Knowing it is futile – no one returns from where you have gone. But still, the heart knows no other emotion. And so we will wait, till whenever we can.

– – – –

This duet song from the 1962 film ‘Rooplekha’ is a real treat. It is vintage Rafi, sung with that signature ‘खुमारी’ and ‘मस्ती’, the inimitable flavors of sounds that only Rafi Sb could render. When I came across this song while searching for a duet of Rafi Sb starting with ‘म’, I was quite excited. The emotion that ran through my mind was the oft represented thought – how come this song is not yet on the blog. Quite a popular favorite from the radio listening days, it is a wonder that this gem has kept away from our blog. And not that this film is new here – already two songs of this film are showcased here. Both solos, one is a wonderful treat from Suman Kalyanpur – “Tu Ne Chura Li Mere Maathe Ki Bindiya” and a bhajan in the voice of Rafi Sb – “Bahjan Bina Baawre”.

Checking out the Geet Kosh, we find that three films with this same title have been released – in 1934, 1939 and 1962. This 1962 film is produced under the banner of Prithvi Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Mohammed Hussain. The six songs in this film are all written by Farooque Kaiser. And the wonderful compositions are from the mind of Nashaad. Regulars will recall that Nashaad is the pseudonym for Shaukat Ali, aka Shaukat Hussain Dehlavi. His first break in Hindi films as a music director was with the film ‘Naghma’ of 1953. And this break came about in very interesting circumstances. Nakshab Jarchvi, the producer director of this film was trying to engage Naushad Sb as the music director for his film. Certain circumstances prevailed and Naushad Sb declined the offer. Somewhat piqued by this response, Nakshab Sb brought in Shaukat Ali, who was working as assistant music director till then, and gave him charge of the music department for his film. And he also suggested to use the pseudonym ‘Nashaad’, in a likely riposte to Naushad Sb’s refusal.

Coming to the star cast of this film, the Geet Kosh lists the following actors Mahipal, Vijaya Chaudhary, Sundar, Raj Adeeb, Shaam Kumar, Krishna Kumari, Amar, Jeevankala, Madhumati, Rafiq, Munshi Munakka, Mohammad Ali, Ghani, Arvind Kumar, Dhondu, Balram, Nazeer Kashmiri, Shri Bhagwan, Pandey Ji, Ravikant, Shamu, Kathana, and Sujata.

On screen, this song is presented as a mujra dance song – a peculiar one – in that the ‘saazinda’ (musician) accompanying the dancer is leading the singing. We see Mahipal playing the sitar and Vijaya Chaudhry doing the dance sequence. There are two other characters in this scenario. One lady, who I guess is Krishna Kumari, and a gentleman I am not able to place a name to the face. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to please confirm / correct / add the names for these two artists.

The duet is an exchange of queries and responses between the two artists. Very interesting words, and a very dear composition. The renditions, of course, Rafi Sb and Suman Kalyanpur – one of their best duets in my opinion. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Mehfil Mein Tere Husn Ka Deewaana Kaun Hai  (Rooplekha) (1962) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Farooque Kaiser, MD – Nashaad

deewaana ho ji
parwaana ho ji
mastaana kaun hai
ye shamma jaanti hai parwaana kaun hai
mehfil mein tere husn ka deewaana kaun hai

tum apne dil ka raaz

bach ke meri nigaah se

pehchaanti hai meri nazar
sabko meharbaan
sukh chain mera chheen ke

mastaana kaun hai
dekhenge hum bhi aap ka mastaana kaun hai
ye shamma jaanti hai ke
parwaana kaun hai
ye shamma jaanti hai parwaana kaun hai
mehfil mein tere husn ka deewaana kaun hai

ye maante hain hum ke
bade badnaseeb hain
oo oo ooo
phir bhi khushi hai hum ko
ke tum se qareeb hain
aaaaaaaa aaaaaaaa aaaa
khul jaaye raaz e dil to
qayaamat na ho kahin
darte hain tum ko hum se
mohabbat na ho kahin
haaye
khul jaaye ye bhi raaz ke
deewaana kaun hai
khul jaaye ye bhi raaz ke deewaana kaun hai
deewaana ho ji
parwaana ho ji
mastaana kaun hai
ye shamma jaanti hai parwaana kaun hai
mehfil mein tere husn ka deewaana kaun hai

आsssss आssss आssssss
आsssssss आssssssss

आsssssss आsssssss आsss

ओ ओ ओsss ओssss
आsssssss आsssssss आsss

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 26
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

[Something as such, happened that fateful day, when the news of you departure came. . .]

– – – –

Today’s song is a wonderfully crafted song. And is euqally well performed and filmed.

The scenario is familiar – Shri Ram, accompanied by Sita ji and Lakshman, are travelling on foot, after departing from Ayodhya, for their sojourn of 14 years in the forest. They come to Shringverpur on the banks of river Ganga. To cross the river, Shri Ram requests the boatman to ferry them in a boat. Kevat, the boatman, at first refuses to ferry them. He has heard of the incident at the deserted ashram of Gautam Rishi, where by the mere touch of the dust from the feet of the Lord, Sati Ahilya who had been cast into stone by the curse of her husband, Gautam Rishi, came to life once again. Kevat cites that incident, and expresses apprehension that if by the touch of the dust from the feet of the Lord, his boat made of wood, would also come to life in the form of a lady, then what would become of him. Not just that he would lose his only source of income, and the only occupation he knows, he would have the additional burden of another member added to the family.

Much to the chagrin of Lakshman, Kevat dithers and dilly-dallies. And then he agrees on one condition – that the Lord should permit him to wash His feet, ostensibly to wash off any dust from the divine feet, and only then allow the trio to step on to his boat.

This event from the Ramayan is well known. It is so beautifully presented here in this song. The film is ‘Bharat Milap’ from 1965. The verses of this song are penned by Bharat Vyas, and the music is from the mind of Vasant Desai. The words are so beautifully crafted and the verses are embellished – अलंकृत is the word. The melodic construction is also very pleasing. It is a quick paced song, based on the folk music of the rural North India. The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Kamal Barot.

On screen, the song is performed by Sunder, and a lady actor I am not able to identify and name. I request knowledgeable readers and friends to please help make the identification. The duo is accompanied by other members of the village community, and the song is presented as a group dance.
[Note: Thanks to Pramod ji and Prakash ji, the lady dancers are identified as Jeevankala, Manjula, Sheela Ramchandra, Aruna.]

The other main players in this scene are Shri Ram, Sita ji and Lakshman. Indrani Mukherjee plays the role of Devi Sita. As per IMDB listing of cast and crew, Anand Ashish Kumar plays the role of Ram. As far as Lakshman, I am not able to identify and name the actor playing that role.
[Note: Thanks to Pramod ji for correction to the name of he actor in the role of Ram.]

All in all, a very lilting, very pleasing and a very energetic presentation. Lovely song.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 25
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

[Pray till when do we keep saying this, you have left and gone to a place where our voice does not reach you]

– – – –

Skipping the letter ‘फ’ – no more songs available as applicable this series, starting with this letter. We come to ‘ब’.

This song from the obscure 1958 film ‘Sun To Le Haseena’, is an unfamiliar but a very lovely melody from the mind of S Mohinder. The film is a social drama coming from the famous Filmistan Studios, Bombay, and is directed by SP Bakshi. The Geet Kosh lists seven songs for this film. These seven songs are written by four songwriters – Saarshaar Sailiaani, Rahil Gorakhpuri, Anand Bakshi and Kaif Irfani. Today’s song is penned by Anand Bakshi. The music director is S Mohinder. Singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle.

The cast of actors for this film is listed as Shashikala, Ravindra Kapoor, Agha, P Kailash, Badri Prasad, Randhir, Gulab, Sabita Chatterjee, Kanu Rai, Manju, Manohar Geer, Vitthal Das Panchotia, Madhu Apte, Ramlal, Leela, Bazid Khan, Rajeshwar Singh, Noor, Chandramohan, Pathak, Shantaram, Ravi Tandon, Sundar, Pal.

The leading man Ravindra Kapoor, younger brother of actor Kamal Kapoor, belongs to the Kapoor family, and is a first cousin of the Raj Kapoor generation. Folks will remember Nasir Hussain’s 1971 film ‘Caravan’. In this film, Jeetendra has two assistants / cleaners in his truck business. One is Junior Mehmood, and the other is Ravindra Kapoor. Ravindra Kapoor did not make a successful and popular career in Hindi films as a leading hero. However, he was quite a hit in Punjabi films in 1960s, and was a very popular leading man in that time. Some of his Punjabi films include ‘Sherni’  (1973), ‘Kankan De Ohle’  (1970), ‘Dupatta’  (1969), ‘Mukhra Chan Warga’  (1969), ‘Paun Baran’  (1969), ‘Punjabi Munda’  (1968), ‘Pind De Kuri’ (1967), ‘Khed Preetan Di’  (1967), ‘Neem Hakeem’  (1967), ‘Kunwari’  (1966), ‘Gabroo Desh Punjab De’  (1966), ‘Laiye Tod Nibhaiye’  (1966), ‘Shokan Mele Di’  (1965), ‘Saat Saaliyan’  (1964), ‘Mere Haaniyan’  (1963), ‘Pardesi Dhola’  (1959), ‘Chambe Di Kali’ etc.

From 1970 onwards, he is known better by the name Goga Kapoor. In Hindi films, as per the Geet Kosh listings (till 1980), he has appeared in 20 films (there are more films listed post 1980 when we check online), of which about 7 or 8 are as leading man, opposite to heroines like Shashikala, Ameeta and Indrani Mukherjee. In the remaining appearances, he is in character artist roles. In his later years, he was doing more villain and gangster type roles. He passed away in 2011.

[Note: With tongue in cheek, I reveal my personal connection to this clan. My mother’s second cousin on her maternal side of the family (from Simla) is/was married to Ravindra Kapoor. 🙂 ]

The song is sung by Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. It is a lively nok-jhonk exchange between lovers. Only the audio of this song is available, so it is not possible say who has sung it on screen. It could be Ravindra Kapoor and Shashikala, or it could be Agha, and one of the supporting ladies. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to please add more information about this song and this film, if available.

Listen to this racy song. Peevesie’s Mom commented earlier today that “. . . josh which only Mohd. Rafi could bring to a song no matter who is lip syncing.” So true, the one and only Rafi Sb.
Enjoy this song.

Yes, we know, and we realize it. But still, it does seem that this साथ was not even justified as दो पल or even one. . .

Skipping the letters ‘ढ’ and ‘ण’
‘ढ’ – very few songs starting with this letter – either all used, or not applicable to this series.
‘ण’ does not have any song starting with this letter. Made a very interesting discovery as I browsed the Hindi dictionary for words starting with ‘ण’. There is only one word that starts with this letter. More interestingly, the letter itself has uses as a monosyllabic word, and has at least 10 meanings associated. Wow.

So we come to the letter ‘प’ today. And here is a wonderfully lovely song to go with it.

Today’s episode of this series brings up the second song of the film ‘Magic Carpet’ (1964), one of the ‘jaadugar sainyaan’ category of films, which were a popular genre in the 1950s and 60s. Although classified as B/C grade films, this category of films had their own distribution circuits, their own cinema halls where they were exhibited, and a very loyal coterie of audience who would not let go even one of this category without a visit.

The film is produced by AM Bhanji under the banner of Unique Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Babubhai Mistry. In the Geet Kosh, the cast of actors is listed as a very short list – Chitra, Azaad, BM Vyas and Bhagwan. The additional names of actors in this film, as taken from the casting credits in the film (that has now become thankfully available in public domain), are Bela Bose, Dalpat, Bimla Kashmiri, Kesri, Aroon, Maqbool, Radhe Shyam, Arvind Kumar, Mehroo Bai, Bakshi, Master Kishore, Kalla, Rafiq, Sandow, MD, Dawood, Amir, Musa, Julian, Khalil, Rehman, Salim, Zippy and Nagina.

Geet Kosh lists five songs for this film, penned by four poets, Jia Dehlavi, Shakeel Nomaani, Aish Farooqi and Farooque Kaiser. This song is written by Shakeel Nomaani. The music – by Ram Prasad. Yes, he is the same Ram Prasad Sharma, father of Pyaarelal (of Lxmikant Pyaarelal duo) and Ganesh. A brief about this music director is included in the post for the song “Antul Habi Ke Dekho Kabhi. . .“.

The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. On screen, we see this song initiated by Bhagwan Dada, and a lady, whose name, if I may hazard a guess, is Bimla Kashmiri. I could be wrong, and I welcome inputs from more knowledgeable readers and friends, to correct or confirm this guess.

As the song progresses, we also see Azaad and Chitra in the clip. Majority of the performance of the song is by Bhagwan and Bimla Kashmiri. Azaad does not appear to lip sync any of the lines, but Chitra does take up lip syncing in one of the stanzas. So in all, the onscreen performance and mapping to the playback voices, is kind of mixed up in this song.

And so, this song brings up the 24th episode in this series. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Pyaar Ki Baaten Koi Na Jaane Yaad Teri Phir Aaye  (Magic Carpet) (1964) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Shakeel Nomaani, MD – Ram Prasad
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

pyaar ki baaten koi na jaane
yaad teri phir aaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

dil ko teri tirchhi nazar ne
de diya hai sahaara
dil ko teri tirchhi nazar ne
de diya hai sahaara
jaao aji jhoothe kahin ke
tum na samjhe ishaara
hum shama aur tum parwaane
raaz na khulne paaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

kaabu ab dil par nahin hai
gaa rahi hain bahaaren
kaabu ab dil par nahin hai
gaa rahi hain bahaaren
jaise tujhe dulhan banaane
aa rahi hain bahaaren
door ka jalwa dil na maane
dil se nikle haaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
pyaar ki baaten koi na jaane
yaad teri phir aaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

dekho mujhe aise na dekho
kya kahega zamaana
dekho mujhe aise na dekho
kya kahega zamaana
jaayen kahaan teri gali se
koi nahin hai thikaana
meri ada ke o deewaane
kaun tujhe samjhaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
chaand sa chehra zulfen kaali
nazar na lag jaaye
wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye
o wallah tauba meri haaye
allah tauba meri haaye

– – – –

Now this song today has a very interesting peculiarity, that was brought to our group’s notice by Bakshish Singh ji. I will come that shortly.

Today’s song, another vintage Chitragupt creation, which has remained kind of obscure and unfamiliar to the listening public. In its time, the music of this film was quite popular on the radio, especially the Mukesh song “Babam Babam Bam Bam Lehri” and the Kamal Barot song “Suna Hai Jabse Mausam Hai Pyaar Ke Kaabil”. The song presented in this post was also heard on the radio, but now it has been unheard for a long time.

Ramu Dada is a film by Sheikh Mukhtar. It is directed by Adarsh for the banner of Adarshlok, Bombay. The main star cast is listed as Sheikh Mukhtar, Jaimala, Prince Saleem, Honey Irani, Sapru, Nilofer, Rajan Haksar, Jagdish Shrivastav and Chand Usmani etc. In this, the name Prince Saleem is the same person as Salim Khan that we are more familiar with – part of the Salim-Javed team of story writers (‘Sholay’ (1975) et al.), father of actor Salman Khan.

Geet Kosh lists 9 songs of this film. Three of these are already showcased on our blog. This post brings on board the fourth song of this film. All the songs are penned by Majrooh Sb and the music is composed by Chitragupt. In this song, Rafi Sb’s voice is accompanied by the voice of Lata ji. On screen, this song is performed by Salim Khan and Jaimala.

Now coming to the interesting peculiarity of this song. This song is one of those that has a slight variation in between the audio and video versions; or in other words, in between the 78 rpm recording and the recording actually filmed. Readers will recall that I discussed another such song earlier in the year – “Rangeen Bahaaron Se Hai Gulzaar China Town” from the 1962 film ‘Chinatown’. This song has a similar peculiarity. The verses noted in the lyrics section below are based on the audio version of this song, taken from the 78 rpm record. That version also supplies the title line for this post, and that is because the Geet Kosh takes this as the original wording for listing. The lines of the mukhda of this song has been modified in the video version.

The mukhda in the audio version is worded as,

Male Voice:
daal bhi de zulfon ki chhaaon
zaalima dhoop chadhi jaaye
Female Voice:
lo na sanam zulfon ka naam
baat mein baat badhi jaaye

In the video version filmed, the mukhda is worded as

Male Voice:
daal bhi de palkon ki chhaaon
zaalima dhoop chadhi jaaye
Female Voice:
lo na sanam palkon ka naam
preet mein reet badhi jaaye

Please listen to the mukhda rendition in the two versions. When we listen to the audio version, it sounds very normal and correct, nothing is amiss. However, when we listen to the video version, the lines of the mukhda rendition sound somewhat altered and out of sync with the music. The most likely explanation is that these lines have been overlaid on to an earlier version of this song. Meaning that the song was filmed with the version that is present on the 78 rpm records. Then for some reason (unknown at this time), the mukhda lines were re-recorded with the sight variation in words, and then this recording was carefully dubbed onto the existing celluloid reels. However, the dubbing is not perfect. We can clearly make out a slight variation in the pace of music for these lines. And careful examination will also show that the lip sync for the mukhda lines is out of sync.

Having established this variation, however I have not been able to locate any information as to why this change was made, why was this change was so essential and necessary. I request friends and readers to add more information regarding the why of this change.

Meanwhile, check out these variant versions of the song.

Song – Daal Bhi De Zulfon Ki Chhaon  (Ramu Dada) (1961) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – Chitragupt

Lyrics (based on the audio version)

daal bhi de zulfon ki chhaaon
zaalima dhoop chadhi jaaye
lo na sanam zulfon ka naam
baat mein baat badhi jaaye
daal bhi de zulfon ki chhaaon
zaalima dhoop chadhi jaaye
lo na sanam zulfon ka naam
baat mein baat badhi jaaye

kaahe tera
jalta dil hai bechara
aata nahin
aanchal haath tumhaara
kaahe tera
jalta dil hai bechara
aata nahin
aanchal haath tumhaara
ye rangeen ghata
paa ke hawa
udti jaaye
lo na sanam zulfon ka naam
baat mein baat badhi jaaye
daal bhi de zulfon ki chhaaon
zaalima dhoop chadhi jaaye

ye kya hua
uljhi chaal tumhaari
dekho na ji
latt phir bikhri hamaari
ye kya hua
uljhi chaal tumhaari
dekho na ji
latt phir bikhri hamaari
na kyun jaaye bikhar
ham se nazar
ladti jaaye
ke daal bhi de zulfon ki chhaaon
zaalima dhoop chadhi jaaye
lo na sanam zulfon ka naam
baat mein baat badhi jaaye

duniya kahe
sajna pyaar bura hai
yehi na ho
to ye duniya bhi kya hai
duniya kahe
sajna pyaar bura hai
yehi na ho
to ye duniya bhi kya hai
ye main dekh rahi
chaah teri
badhti jaaye
ke lo na sanam zulfon ka naam
baat mein baat badhi jaaye
daal bhi de zulfon ki chhaaon
zaalima dhoop chadhi jaaye
lo na sanam zulfon ka naam
baat mein baat badhi jaaye

Yes, it is a story of every day – a song plays and memories come by. Or sometimes, memories passing thru remind of a song that is so very dear to the heart. That is all that remains now – memories and songs playing hide and seek in the dimly lit bylanes of the mind.

– – – –

The next song in this series comes from the 1976 film ‘Ladki Bholi Bhaali’. And incidentally this film is also making its debut on the blog today. That makes it three in a row today – 🙂 🙂 .

The film was directed by Ashok Roy for Mahesh Chitra, Bombay. The star cast listed for the film is Asha Sachdev, Gautam Sarin, Junior Mehmood, Ramesh Dev, Tarun Ghosh, Anita Guha, Ranveer Raj, Ram Mohan, Lalita Chatterjee, Rupali, Darshan, Krishan Duggal, Baldev Trehan, Manik Dutt, Master Devanand, Heena Kausar, Rakesh Pandey, Snehlata, Bharat Bhushan, and Dheeraj etc.

The film has music by Usha Khanna. Geet Kosh lists four songs for this film, three of which are from the pen of Hasrat Jaipuri. All those three songs are solos in the voice of Asha Bhosle. The fourth song, which is the song presented today, is a duet in the voice of Rafi Sb and Usha Khanna herself. And it is written by Saawan Kumar Tak.

Saawan Kumar has had a good partnership with Usha Khanna. Usha ji has given music to 11 films which have either been directed by Saawan Kumar, or he has written lyrics for them. They were married, but the matrimonial relationship did not last for long. Together they have created such popular hits like “Barkha Rani, Zara Jam Ke Barso“, “Wo Jidhar Dekh Rahe Hain, Sab Udhar Dekh Rahe Hain” (both from ‘Sabak’, 1973) “Teri Galiyon Mein Na Rakhenge Kadam. . .“, (‘Hawas’, 1974), “Sar e Mehfil Mera Imaan Beimaan Ho Gaya” (‘Ab Kya Hoga’, 1977), “Shaayad Meri Shaadi Ka Khyaal. . .“, “Zindagi Pyaar Ka Geet Hai” (both from ‘Souten’, 1983). (I am surprised that this last mentioned song is still waiting to come on board.)

Coming to today’s song, it is picturized on Rakesh Pandey and Asha Sachdev Snehlata, with Gautam Sarin also present in the scene and also lip-syncing some lines. I have not yet seen the film, and so the situation is not clear to me. I request other friends and readers who may have seen this film, to add some background information about the situation in this song.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 21
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Everyone has to depart, someday. But this beseeching yoke of memories is now becoming an encumbering burden, that would probably be lightened only when I myself will depart.

– – – –

Presenting the next episode in this series. With close to half of Rafi Sb’s songs already posted on the blog, it is getting to be not an easy job to find songs to fit the requirements of the series. The alphabet letter for today is ‘ट’. When we scan the list of songs, we find a long list of songs starting with ‘t’, but then on closer review, one finds that majority of these ‘t’ songs are actually for the syllable ‘त’ –  as in ‘तुम’, ‘तुम्हारे’, ‘तेरा’ etc. There are very few songs that will start with the sound of ‘ट’.

But then, the going is still good. In fact I found two very good songs that satisfy this criteria; the second one I found fit quite well into another series, so I kept that aside for now.

This song is from the film ‘Lagan’ from 1971. Prior to this, two other films by this same title have been made – on in 1941 and the second in 1955. This is the third one. The film is produced under the banner of RRK Combine of Madras (now Chennai), and is directed by Ramanna. The star cast of this film includes Nutan, Ajay Sahni, Prem Chopra, Farida Jalal, Jagdeep, Bindu, Sulochana, Shabnam, Jaishri T, Nazir Hussain, Beerbal, Dubey and Kailash Chopra amongst others.

The film is a family drama – a story about a mother (role played by Sulochana) and her two sons (roles played by Prem Chopra and Ajay Sahni aka Parikshit Sahni). They relocate from Burma to Bombay, and a good Samaritan soul (role played by Nazir Hussain) in the form of a friend of the lady’s late-husband, hands them over substantial assets that are the share of the late-husband. Life is comfortable, only that the elder son (Prem Chopra) is wayward, and seeks extra-marital happiness. His wife is on way for a child, and he mistreats her. When this become known to the mother, she resolves to take action against her elder son, and to set him right.

The film has six songs, all written by Anand Bakshi, and tuned to music by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. Some of the songs are well heard memories from radio listening days. I picked this song for being a duet of Rafi Sb, but could not locate its video. I even scanned the film quickly, but it seems this song has been excluded from the film.

A duet in the voice of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle, it seems like a sad song of separation. As I scanned the film, I really could not make out where and how this song might fit into the storyline. If it were a solo sad song, then it could have fit in well. But a sad song presented as a duet seems to have no place in the film.

And so, presenting the next in this series, a song that is presents  a complaint, possibly from to a separated companion, or may be to the Almighty.

Song – Toote To Toote Koi Dil Ka Sahaara  (Lagan) (1971) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Anand Bakshi, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal
Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

toote to toote koi dil ka sahaara
toote to toote koi dil ka sahaara
sahaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara
roothe to roothe koi saathi hamaara
roothe to roothe koi saathi hamaara
hamaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara

chaahe wafa kar chaahe kar bewafaai
chaahe wafa kar chaahe kar bewafaai
hum wo nahin jo denge teri duhaai
samjhe na samjhe zaalim tu ye ishaara
ishaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara
toote to toote koi dil ka sahaara

ro ro ke phir na tera hum naam lenge
ro ro ke phir na tera hum naam lenge
baahen kisi ki bhi hum to thaam lenge
chhoote to chhoote hamse daaman tumhaara
tumhaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara
toote to toote koi dil ka sahaara
roothe to roothe koi saathi hamaara
hamaara
ho hi raha hai phir bhi apna guzaara

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 20
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A big heart such as yours is a rarity in humans.

– – – –

The first line of the song and the mind is tuned in for another gem of a creation from Chitragupt. This next song in this series is vintage Chitragupt.

The film is ‘Police Detective’ from 1960. The melody was still the reigning empress, and the creators of the likes of Chitragupt were still at their inspired best. Such a lovely playful song of two hearts in love, expressing their hearts to each other.

The film is a production from the banner of Neo Light Films, Bombay and is produced by Balwant Bhatt and Ram Kamlani. It is directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The cast of actors listed for the film is impressive and includes Shyama, Sudesh, David, Jaishri Gadkar, Lilian, Ram Kamlani, Helen, Anwar, Shammi, Bhagwan, Meena, Genius, Susheel Kumar, Jai Kumar, Nisar, Roshanlal, Ramesh Roy, Saleem, Ghulam Rasool, Gani, Mohammad Ali, Sevanand, Ameer, Douglas, Tiger (Dog), and Pedro, the human chimpanzee. Hmm. . . Sevanand – interesting, would have liked to see an image of this actor. . . whether any similarity to Dev Anand. 🙂

Six songs are listed for this film, all from the pen of Prem Dhawan. Two of these songs are already showcased here on our blog. This is the third one to come on board from this film. The singing companion of Rafi Sb in this song is Lata Mangeshkar. Given the list of actors, this song is most likely picturized on the lead pair of Shyama and Sudesh Kumar. I request other readers and friends to please comment on this guess.

Listen to this lovely tête-à-tête between two hearts in love – complaints of hearts stolen through deceit and ripostes of challenges that if this is deceit, then welcome to take back the heart. Wonderful play of words, and a lovely tune that ties them together. A pleasure to listen.

Song – Nazar Ne Loota Hai, Ada Ne Maara Hai  (Police Detective) (1960) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Chitragupt

Lyrics

nazar ne loota hai
ada ne maara hai
haseenon ka
ye dhokha bhi
bada hi pyaara hai
nazar ne loota hai
ada ne maara hai
haseenon ka
ye dhokha bhi
bada hi pyaara hai
agar ye dhokha tha
to kis ne roka tha
laga ke dil ye kehte ho
ke dil bechaara hai
nazar ne loota hai

hamaare haal pe to ye zamaana hansta hai
ke jiske paas dil ho wo kabhi to phansta hai
hamaare haal pe to ye zamaana hansta hai
ke jiske paas dil ho wo kabhi to phansta hai
to phir kyon rotey phirtey ho
ke dil nazron ka maara hai
nazar ne loota hai
ada ne maara hai
haseenon ka
ye dhokha bhi
bada hi pyaara hai
nazar ne loota hai

hamaare naaz bhi sehne padenge ulfat mein
likhe hain sainkdo chakkar
tumhaari kismat mein
hamaare naaz bhi sehne padenge ulfat mein
likhe hain sainkdo chakkar
tumhaari kismat mein
jo hum pe guzregi seh lenge
jab dil tum pe waara hai
agar ye dhokha tha
to kis ne roka tha
laga ke dil ye kehte ho
ke dil bechaara hai
nazar ne loota hai
ada ne maara hai
haseenon ka
ye dhokha bhi
bada hi pyaara hai
nazar ne loota hai

With your songs, and your deeds, that is what you accomplished in your life; that is the only memories we remember you by . . .

Presenting the next episode in this series. The film is a standard family drama from the still sedate 1960s, and the fever of disco was still hidden in far horizons. The film is ‘Bhai Behen’ from 1969. The lead pair of Nutan and Sunil Dutt, with a better part of two decades of careers behind them, still look handsome and comely.

The film comes from the banner of Vikram Productions, Madras, and is directed by the renowned A Bhimsingh. The cast of actors is listed as Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Pran, Padmini, Sulochana, Helen, Diwakar, Mukri, Bhalla, Shivraj, V Puranik, and Babbanlal. Quite a formulaic presentation this one must be – one look as the list of actors, and one can quickly surmise the type of roles that each actor would have played.

Seven songs and four songwriters are listed – Rajendra Krishan, SH Bihari, Pt Narendra Sharma and Hasrat Jaipuri. This song is from the pen of SH Bihari. Music is composed by the duo of Shanker Jaikishan.

The song is about coming of age and the blossoming of first love. The song plays out in the gardens and then on to the boat and the Bombay coastline. Both Sunil Dutt and Nutan are still fresh from their 1967 hit together – ‘Milan’. And a little further back, they also have more hits together – ‘Khandaan’ in 1965 and ‘Sujaata’ in 1960. Ah yes, also ‘Gauri’ from 1968.

Enjoy this lesser heard melody in the voices of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle.

Song – Dheere Dheere Mohabbat Jawaan Ho Gai  (Bhai Behan) (1969) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – SH Bihari, MD – Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

aap to jaane kya
mujhse keh kar miley
aap to jaane kya
mujhse keh kar miley
phool armaan ke dil mein itne khile
phool itne khile
husn ki zindagi gulsitaan ho dayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

kar chuke aap jab
mujh se ahd e wafaa
kar chuke aap jab
mujh se ahd e wafaa
farq itna hi donon mein baaki raha
haaye baaki raha
aap dil ban gaye
aur main jaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi
dheere dheere mohabbat jawaan ho gayi
baat itni badhi dastaan ho gayi

aaa aaa aaaa
aaaa aaaaa aaaa aaaa
aa haa haa
aa haa haa haa haa
aaaa aaaa aaa aaa aaaa

आss आss आsss
आsss आssss आsss आsss
आsss आssss आss आss आsss
