Jyot se jyot jagaate chalo

on:“Sant Gyaneshwar” was a C grade small budget Bollywood, the likes of which routinely go into oblivion unnoticed. But the music of this movie elevated the movie so much that one of its songs went on to become a bhajan, as well a prayer in schools, homes, etc.
I am talking about the song “jyot se jyot jagaate chalo”. This song was written by Bharat Vyas and the music was composed by the then up and coming duo of music directors viz Laxmikant Pyarelal. It was not the first time that this highly talented duo of music directors had changed the fortunes of a C grade movie with their music. Their first released movie “Parasmani” was also a C grade mythological movie, and it became a well known movie among mainstream movie goers only because of the music of Laxmikant Pyarelal.
This song “Jyot se jyot jalaate chalo” had a male version too, sung by Mukesh. But it is the female version sung by Lata that is regarded as the the de fault version of this song. I have not watched this movie, and the video of this song is not available, so I will not be surprised if this song turns out to be picturised on a kid, instead of on a woman. In those days, female playback singers used to give playback for child actors too.
So here is this iconic song from Sant Gyaneshwar, which has become such a well known prayer/ bhajan by now.

Song-Jyot se jyot jagaate chalo (Sant Gyaneshwar) (1964) Singers-Lata/Mukesh, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
jo nirdhan hai jo nirbal hai woh hai prabhu kaa pyaaraa
pyaar ke moti
pyaar ke moti lutaate chalo, prem ki gangaa bahaate chalo
prem ki gangaa bahaate chalo
aashaa tooti mamtaa roothi chhoot gayaa hai kinaaraa
band karo mat dwaar dayaa kaa de do kuchh to sahaaraa
deep dayaa kaa
deep dayaa kaa jalaate chalo, prem ki gangaa bahaate chalo
prem ki gangaa bahaate chalo
chhaaya hai chhahun aur andheraa bhatak gayin hain dishaayen
maanav ban baiThaa hai daanav kisko vyathaa sunaayen

Atul there is another fantastic song in Sant Gyaneshwar- in my humble opinion far superior to Jyot se Jyot musically . It’s Bahut din beete which certainly deserves to be here on your blog.

Yes, the Lata version of the song is picturized on the young Gyaneshwar and his siblings, all in their pre or early teens…
