Happy Independence Day to all!!!

Today (15 august 2021),We are celebrating the seventy-fifth year of our hard-fought freedom that we got on 15th August in 1947. We can breathe in this free air now because many had sacrificed their present at that time for our future. There are many known and too many unknown freedom fighters who laid down their lives to see India as a free nation. The nation has grown up to seventy-four years old now and is stepping into the seventy-fifty year of its life.

Many goals were fulfilled and many remains unfulfilled. ‘Swaraj’ for all is still a distant dream and so is the dream of the basic needs for all i.e., ‘roti, kapda aur makaan’.

With hopes alive we keep moving year to year achieving growth in some areas and falling short in some areas, but the spirit of ‘unity’ that binds us is strong and it is becoming stronger and stronger day by day. That is inspite of ‘divisive forces’ leaving no stones unturned to create unrest in the country over petty issues, causingmresulting unrest here and there.

Today is the day when we all come together and pay our tributes to our freedom fighters and reiterate the pledge of ‘long live the freedom of India’ and ‘long live the republic of India’.

It is customary for us to cover patriotic songs from Hindi movies on thi occasion. We still have lots and lots of patriotic songs not yet showcased on the blog despite the bog coering many patriotic songs during the last 13 years o its eitene.

When we talk of patriotic songs in Hindi movies, the movie personality’s name that immediately comes to our mind is actor-producer-director Manoj Kumar.

Manoj Kumar made several movies with social and patriotic themes which always have created some of the memorable and timeless classic songs glorifying our motherland. Today we will be listening to one such song from his movie ‘Clerk’ made in 1989.

I was staying at Kota (Rajasthan) (1988-1996) then and I remember that I had watched this movie with my boss and colleagues from my office.

As I have mentioned in my earlier posts on the blog, I have grown up watching many movies of Manoj Kumar (movies from Black & white era) and the latest in the seventies and eighties.
Though I didn’t remember all about this movie ‘Clerk’ now, but I remember this movie had many shades of ‘Roti, Kapda aur Makaan’ in it, in its story as well as picturization of the songs. For that matter the picturization of songs had always been in unique style of Manoj Kumar in his movies.

I also do not remember when today’s song appears in the movie. This song is a patriotic song celebrating ‘15th August’ or ‘pandrah August’ and the spirit of freedom.

Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. Lyrics are written by Manoj Kumar himself (he was also the producer, director, and editor of this movie).
Music for this movie ‘Clerk-1989’ was composed by Uttam Singh-Jagdish Khanna.

I do not remember now on whom the song had been picturized. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its’ songs.
Let us listen to the song now.

Once again wishing all of our readers a ‘very Happy Independence Day’ …

Music of Uttam Singh – 01
—————————

#Nostalgia – Summer – 1983 (2) #

When I talk about the summer nostalgia-1983 I cannot forget the today’s movie. And that is why this separate write-up. Because the movie was a special movie for people like me who were interested in Manoj Kumar and his movies. And since his brother was making a debut with three others also making a debut, we (me and my friends) were excited about this movie.

Promotion of this movie on radio had already started earlier when we were already preparing for our board exams (of class Xth). Me and my friends used to discuss about its songs as some were nice songs and already heard frequently during promotion of this movie. Few songs from this movie were also becoming our favorites and we were also eager to watch the debutant actor and actresses of this movie.

The movie is ‘Painter Babu from 1983. The music of this movie is composed by music duo Uttam Singh- Jagdish Khanna. This was their first movie as music director duo. And this was also the first introduction of these names to me.

Well, we get to watch this movie in the vacations after our board examinations were over. After watching and liking this movie we become curious to know more about the music composers of this movie viz. Uttam Singh and Jagdish Khanna. However, after the Board exams it was ‘World Cup-1983’, and around the same time the results for the exams were declared. After that everything took a back seat and looking for admissions to ‘polytechnic’ or ‘11th -12th, become the priority. And that time there was no internet or blog like ‘atulsongaday’, and I was also not into contributing of lyrics or writing about movies and their songs 😊, So everything was deferred for the future.

‘Painter Babu’ was not as much successful on the box office as it was expected to do. But its beautiful songs were liked and enjoyed by music lovers like me. Some of its songs were already popular like “Kab Talak Shamma Jali Yaad Nahin” which has already been posted on the blog on 11.07.2012, more than eight years ago. Since I loved the songs of this movie, I had shared two of its songs after getting associated with this blog. I had noted two songs of this movie long time back, but they remained to be posted.

Today I am presenting this song on birth anniversary of Music Director Uttam Singh.

Uttam Singh was born on 25th May’1948. Today is his seventy-third birth anniversary. On this occasion we wish him a very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful life ahead. (We will discuss more about him and his filmography in the future posts coming on the blog. Till then we move to the today’s movie again.)

‘Painter Babu’ is directed by Ashok for ‘V.I.P. Films, Bombay’. It is produced by Manoj Kumar who also wrote the story and screenplay for this movie and had also done the editing.

The star cast of the film includes Rajiv Goswami (debutant and in title role), Meenakshi Sheshadri (debutant), Neelima (debutant), and Virendra Sharma (also a debutant).  They were supported by Rakesh Bedi, Madan Puri, Om Shivpuri, Krishna Dhawan, Pichoo Kapoor, Bandini, Ram Mohan, Kamaldeep, Bharat Kapoor, CS Dubey, Birbal, Lalita Kumari, Meena T, Tun Tun, Sundar Taneja, Rajan Kapoor, Madhup Sharma, Shyam Jeet, Walia, Heera, Bhinda, Leela Mishra, Jankidas, Sudhir, Mohan Choti, Shammi, Dinesh Hingoo, Aruna Irani, Kamini Kaushal and others. Singer Mahendra Kapoor had a special role in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 31.03.1983.

This movie has seven songs written by three lyricists viz. Manoj Kumar, Qamar Jalalabadi and Qateel Shifai. Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, Kishore Kumar, and Bhupinder Singh have given their voices to the songs in this movie. The list of the songs in this movie is as given below.

S.No. Song Title
01 Ho, ham kuchh bhi rakh le naam uskaa
02 Painter Babu, I love you
03 Kab Talak Shamma Jali Yaad Nahin” (Posted 11-07-2012)
04 O mere sajan barsaat mein aa  (Discussed Today)
05 Yaar kapadaa shaandaar hai
06 Hamkaa le chal yaaraa thhandi thhandi nahar ki kinaare
07 Jab yaad ki badli chhaati hai tab aankh meri bhar aati hai

Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. On screen Meenakshi Sheshadri is lip syncing for Lata Mangeshkar’s voice and Mahendra Kapoor is singing for himself as plays a ‘boatman’ here in this song. Rajiv Goswami, the hero of the movie is seen in jail in the picturization of this song and many other artists perform on the boat in this song.

This song may remind some of us the song “Kho Gaya Hai Mera Pyaar” from the film ‘Hariyali Aur Raasta’ (1962) sung by Mahendra Kapoor. In that song the ‘hero’ is searching for his lost love, while in today’s song the heroine is missing her beloved and singing for him.

I have said above that few songs of this movie are very nice. E.g. the song “Kab Talak Shamma Jali Yaad Nahin” posted earlier on the blog, the songs “Jab Yaad Ki Badli Chhaati Hai”, “Hum Kuchh Bhi Rakh Len Naam Uska’ and the song beibg discussed today’s. But surprisingly none of these songs could make it to the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list of 1983. However two other songs from this movie featured in the list – they are “Humka Layi Chal Yaara Thandi Thandi Nehar Ke Kinaare” (at rank 21) and “Yaar Ladki Shaandar Hai” (ranking at number 26).

Let us now listen to the today’s song and take a trip down memory lane (almost) thirty-eight years back. . .

O mere sajan barsaat mein aa

And also wish a very happy birthday to Uttam Singh. . .

(Lyrics for this song are written by Manoj Kumar as I have noted from some alternate sources. HFGK Vol-VI (1981-1985) does not mention the lyricist’s name for individual songs separately).

It can be seen from the table of 1965 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 91 songs in movies released in 1965. It was for the first time since 1948 that the number of songs sung by her in a year fell below three figures.

As many as 83 of these 91 songs have already been covered in the blog. Out of 42 movies of 1965 where Lata Mangeshkar sang, all Lata Mangeshkar songs of 37 movies are alreday covered. So we only have 8 Lata songs belonging to 5 movies of 1965 that are not yet covered in the blog.

Alphabetically the first such movie that offers us Lata Mangeshkar songs to discuss is “Amar Jyoti”(1965). This fantasy movie was directed by Raman Desai for Bombay Movietone, Bombay. The movie had L Vijaylaxmi, Mahipal, Ulhas, Kamal Mehra, Sapru, Sarla Devi, Gop Krishn etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it, including five Lata Mangeshkar songs- three solos and two male duets with Mahendra Kapoor. Four songs from the movie (including three Lata Mangeshkar songs) have been covered in the past.

Here is the fourth Lata Mangeshkar song from “Amar Jyoti”(1965). This song is a duet with Mahendra Kapoor. Female Chorus can also he heard. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Vasant Desai.

This lesser known song is a rare song and only its audio seems to be available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
The audio is not clear and I have not been able to get many words right. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics wherever applicable.

Remembrance day of Kalyanji :
24th August :

Since yesterday, when I chanced upon “Dharmatma”(1975) in the “list of songs-moviewise”, I am in a fix. How to start this post !

Unbelievably, only two famous songs from ‘Dharmatma” are posted.
kya khoob lagti ho and

tere chehre mein wo jaadoo hai

Dharmatma had only 4 songs but all were quality songs. As a tribute to Kalyanji (of Kalyanji-Anandji duo) on his 20th death anniversary, I am presenting this song “meri galiyon se logon ki yaari badh gayi”, a duet by Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. Indeevar is the lyricist.

I have seen this movie in the early 80’s at Belgaum. A lasting memory is of people throwing coins in the theatre, when the song ‘tere chehre mein woh jaadoo hai’ began. I have seen the movie one more time after that, on TV. So the impression is of that pristine scenery of locations in Afghanistan, the colourful and beautiful Hema Malini, those light romantic songs, which are light yet intense. This is, I think is the hall mark of Kalyanji-Anandji, not so much in the early phase of late 50’s but later movies, I find the compositions to be a bit more intense than what other music directors were making. They are basically in the mold of Shankar-Jaikishan, similar to Laxmikant-Pyarelal. But Kalyanji-Anandji’s compositions usually were intense and sharp, but fell short of going over the top. The music orchestration was sounded brighter, never dull. Take the songs of “Saraswati Chandra”, understated yet intense on emotion. Or the songs of ‘Jab jab phool khile”, it was like extreme emotion of a Madan Mohan’s and the unwillingness of SDB to cross a boundary. I think S D Burman crossed his own self-imposed boundaries only in “Pyaasa” and “Guide” to some extent. But that is another story.

This unique balance is visible in numerous songs they composed for Manoj Kumar’s films and Feroz Khan’s films too. Take “Purab paschim”’songs, they are a study in contrasting compositions, from “koyi jab tumhaara hriday tod de” to “purva suhaani aayi re….”. Through 70’s they were using a mix of male playback singers for singing for various camps and also actors, including Rajesh Khanna. For female songs, by and large they were faithful to Lata Mangeshkar.

I think the audio cassette I had of sad songs of Mukesh, had mostly Kalyanji-Anandji’s compositions. I will try and list them.
koyi jab tumhaara hriday tod de
Chaandi ki deewaar na todi
Mujhko iss raat ki tanhaayi mein aawaaz na do
Hum chhod chale hain mehfil ko
Main to ek khwaab hoon
Waqt karta jo wafaa
Mere toote huye dil se
Hamne tujhko pyaar kiya hai itna
Jis dil mein basa thha pyaar tera

Another thing to be noted here is that most of them are written by Indeewar. The Kalyanji-Anandi teaming with Indeewar was pretty consistent throughout, with few exceptions like “Kora Kaaghaz” and “Jab Jab Phool Khile”. By 1980’s they had also teamed up with Anjaan.

Coming back to the film ‘Dharmatma”, it could have been tacky and gone out of control. But Feroze Khan as director did manage to make this film a worthy adaptation of ‘The Godfather”. An indianised version couldn’t have been better than this in the 70’s. Clearly the outdoor location shots are fabulous and full of vibrant colour. Cinematography must have been one of the reasons for its popularity when released, the same year with the block buster like “Sholey”. Later on more technically slick movies could be made, but no one could quite capture the brilliance of the deserted sunny Afghanistan. The ‘buzkashi’ scenes were replicated in ‘Khuda Gawaah” later. It is also a fact that need for glorification and glamorization of nomadic tribes held sway over authentic portrayal of the tribal lifestyle of the region.

The song is a function song, where Hema Malini as ‘Reshma’ is dancing, more trying to make a statement and asserting her independence to both Feroz Khan and Danny Danzongpa.

I quote these lines from another song (waqt karta jo wafaa) by Indeevar :

ham bhi pyaase hain ye saaqi ko bataa bhi na sake
saamne jaam thaa aur jaam uthaa bhi na sake
kaash ham ghairat-e-mehfil ke na maare hote

Certainly, Reshma here has no such hang-ups 🙂 🙂

And Hema Malini as the gypsy girl is yet to be emulated by anyone. It is the magic of Cinema in Eastman colour. I want to say no more.

Editor’s note: According to Hindi Film Geet Kosh, This is not one song, but two solo songs, first part being Mahendra Kapoor solo and second part being Lata Mangeshkar solo. That is as far as the record version is concerned. The video version does look like a duet song.

Song-Tera teer pe teer chalaana (Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye)(1963) Singers-Mahendra Kapoor, Lata, Lyrics-Gulshan Bawra, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

tera teer pe teer chalaana
mera ghaayal sa ho jaana
tera teer pe teer chalaana
mera ghaayal sa ho jaana
kaise bhoolega dil wo tera sharmaana
kaise bhoolega dil wo tera sharmaana
dil se dil ka takra jaana
aankhon aankhon ka lad jaana
kaise bhoolega dil wo tera tadpaana
kaise bhoolega dil wo tera tadpaana

ik din toone mere seene pe sharmaa ke rakha sar apna
ik din toone mere seene pe sharmaa ke rakha sar apna
banke mehmaan mere ghar aaye
mere dil mein bana liya ghar apna

dil ka dil mein rahe thhikaana
jalta hai to jale zamaana
kaise bhoolega dil wo tera sharmaana
kaise bhoolega dil wo tera tadpaana

wo pahle pahal tera aa jaana
chhup chhup ke haseen raaton mein
wo pahle pahal tera aa jaana
chhup chhup ke haseen raaton mein

milte thhe kabhi hum chhup chhup ke
saawan ki jawaan barsaaton mein
aise mein dil ka ghabraana
koi dekh na le begaana
kaise bhoolega dil wo tera tadpaana

hoy kaise bhoolega dil wo tera sharmaana
tera teer pe teer chalaana
mera ghaayal sa ho jaana
kaisa bhoolega dil wo tera sharmaana
kaise bhoolega dil wo tera tadpaana

Missing Films of 1960s – 52
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A bit of a coincidence here that the song of this series posted yesterday “O Chanda. . . Aaj Ki Raat Na Dhalna”, and today’s next song in this series, both are ‘chaand’ songs. Yesterday’s song got posted early in the morning, and later I was thinking – posting a ‘chaand’ song at sunrise time is wholly inappropriate. And so, today’s ‘chaand’ song I am bringing to you at an appropriate time in the evening – a waxing moon is in the skies.

Today’s film is ‘Bharat Milap’ from 1965. The film was produced under the banner of KP Productiond, Bombay, and the director’s name is Babubhai Mistry. The cast of actors includes Sohrab Modi, Sulochana, Ashish Kumar, Indrani Mukherjee, Leela Misra, Anand Kumar, and Mridula amongst others.

The film has seven songs, all from the pen of Bharat Vyas. Music is by Vasant Desai. Today’s song is a duet in the voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. Unless I am mistaken, the actors performing this song on screen are Ashish Kumar and Indrani Mukherjee. I request other knowledgeable readers to correct me in case I am in error.

The storyline of the epic ‘Ramayan’ is quite well known. After Shri Ram departs from Ayodhya to spend fourteen years as an ascetic in the woods, Bharat ji makes one attempt to bring him back. He goes to meet him at Chitrakoot. The entire portrayal in this epic is a guidance for the right things to do in life. The meeting at Chitrakoot is very significant. The various dialogues that happen here are so full of deep learnings for mortal humans, on how to conduct themselves in real life. The decision at this juncture is that Bharat ji will return to Ayodhya, and continue look after the administration of the kingdom, and take care of the family and the people. Shri Ram along with Sita ji and Lakshman ji will continue his stay away from Ayodhya, till the specified time.

Bharat ji returns with the ‘charan paduka’ (sandals) of Shri Ram, and places them on the throne of Ayodhya. And he places himself on the ground next to the throne, while administering the kingdom, asking for inspiration and guidance at every step, from the ‘charan paduka’. He further resolves that he will not stay in the palace, for the duration that Shri Ram is traveling in the woods. He also has a hut made for himself in a small village, Nandigram, next to Ayodhya, and stays there only. Even inside the hut, he does not sleep on the ground. He digs a cavity or a trench in the ground, a couple of feet deep, and he sleeps at that level. He says he will not sleep on the same ground on which Shri Ram is walking bare footed for fourteen years. He forsakes all the comforts and luxuries, and also all the pleasures and shared nearness in his own personal life. His spouse, Mandavi, stays in the palaces, but they do not share any proximity.

The tale and the teachings of ‘Ramayan’ are the best examples of personal sacrifices that individuals make for the sake of their dear ones, and for the sake of moral and uprightness in life. I may be digressing here, but I would like to briefly tell about the role of Shatrughan, the youngest of the four brothers, in these complex circumstances.

It is stated that Lakshman ji had taken a vow that he would not sleep for all the time that Shri Ram is away from home, and that he would always be standing guard for the safety and well being of his elder brother and bhabhi (sister in law). What is not well known is that even Shatrughan ji followed a similar stringent regime. All during the day, he would be assisting Bharat ji with the matters of the kingdom. And in the night, he would make one round of the kingdom, and then come and sit on a stone at the gates of the kingdom, keeping vigil, till dawn.

Taken in the right spirit, this tale is the pinnacle of a visionary and inspirational lesson. To keep the honor of a promise, all the four brothers make unparalleled sacrifices. One leaves home with the resolve to live like an ascetic in the woods, for fourteen years. Another resolves to accompany him to secure the comfort and safety of his elder brother, forsaking even sleep. The third brother declines to sit on the throne, gives up his own comforts and resolves to also live like an ascetic for the same period, albeit in his own kingdom. He also resolves to sleep in a pit below the ground, and not on the ground on which his elder brother walks barefoot. And the fourth brother, also forsakes his comforts, and sleep, keeping vigil over a kingdom which all acknowledge belongs to the eldest brother. All the four brothers forsook family life for the duration of this exile. A tale like this has no parallels anywhere in the annals of world history or literature.

This is a wonderfully crafted song, that is simultaneously moving at two levels. Both the levels are expressions of love. But one level is expressing love for a beloved spouse, and at the other level, the love being expressed is for a beloved elder brother. The expression of love in the second level is amounting to love for God Himself. Mandvi, the wife of Bharat ji, is calling out to her husband, expressing her emotions of missing him, and feeling incomplete within herself. Bharat ji is singing the same song at the same time, only that his call is directed towards Shri Ram, reminding Him that his (Bharat ji’s) life is in a precarious balance, if He does not return on time, as promised.

A lovely melody created by Vasant Desai, and a memorable song this one is.

Missing Films of 1960s – 51
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

It is not just a song that I should be concerned about. It is the entire film that I am surprised, has missed the attention of the team members of this blog. And not that the film is the issue. It is the songs that I wonder about. And just the category – ‘How come I missed this song’, will not suffice. Maybe another category that says – ‘How come we all missed this movie’.

The film that I am talking about is ‘Mahabharat’ from 1965. And I am sure you will be asking me – why? Another quite obscure film from the 1960s, as obscure as they come. But the songs, I am sure are going to turn out to be very familiar, most of them are favorites from radio listening days. Just sample these

  • “Champa Kali Chhup Chhup Jaaye Re”
  • “Ta Na Na Dir Dir Deem, Deem Ta Dere Na”
  • “Hari Hari Dharti Hai Neela Gagan”
  • “Sakhi Ri Baaje Mann Ki Baansuriya”

And today’s debut song, which is not the least of these – “O Chanda. . . Aaj Ki Raat Na Dhalna”. This film is such treasure of wonderful songs, all of them available online. And yet, this film has taken all this time to make its debut here.

The film is produced under the banner of AG Films, Bombay and is directed by Babubhai Mistry. The star cast is impressive and includes Pradeep Kumar, Padmini, Dara Singh, Abhi Bhattacharya, Jeevan, Ambika, Manhar Desai, Tiwari, Anoop Kumar, Maruti, and Achla Sachdev amongst others. Song list in Geet Kosh contains 9 songs. All the songs are from the pen of Bharat Vyas. And the music direction – it is Chitragupt.

Today’s debut song is a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. The lilting melody, a dream song – it is such a dear memory from the past. The words, the music and the rendition – all three come together to create this masterpiece. A must listen for the lovers of music and songs of 1950s and 1960s. Enjoy.
