‘Ek Naya Rishta’ (1988) was produced and directed by Vinod Pande. The star cast included Rekha and Raj Kiran in the lead roles supported by Mazhar Khan, Om Shivpuri, Urmila Bhatt, Nitin Sethi, Surendra Pal, Rabia Amin, Vinod Pande, Allena Luke, Anjan Srivastav, Satish Kaushik, Asha Sharma, CS Dube, Yunus Parvez etc. Mark Zuber made a guest appearance in the film.

The film was started sometime in 1984 as a quickie, having got the required dates from Rekha. The film progressed well. However, due to financial constraint, film got delayed. Sometime in 1985, Vinod Pande suspended the film’s shooting and concentrated on the TV serial ‘Air Hostess’ (1985-86). When he garnered necessary finance, the shooting of the film was resumed in 1986 and was getting ready for its release (source: Illustrated Weekly of India, page 69 – March 30, 1986 issue).

In an interview published in ‘Amar Ujala’ of August 20, 2020, Vinod Pande has revealed that during an international flight, he watched an English film. From this film, a thought came to his mind as to what would be the reactions of Indians if a man wishes to become a father without getting married. Thus, the story of ‘Ek Naya Rishta’ (1988) was born in his mind with an Indian setting.

The story of the film in short is as under:

Rajiv (Raj Kiran), the only son of an industrialist father (Om Shivpuri), is a spoilt brat and womaniser. He is not interested in a permanent relationship with a woman in his life by way of marriage. Rajiv’s father suddenly dies. As per his father’s will, Rajiv requires to have a child born to him within 18 months after the death of his father to get his large pool of assets bequeathed to him. Since Rajiv has no interest in marriage, he finds a call girl, Aarti (Rekha) who is ready to become the mother to his child out of wedlock. After the child is born, she has to leave him. During her temporary companionship, Raj Kiran provides her with all the luxuries of life including well-furnished sea-facing bungalow with servants and the chauffeur-driven car. The ‘contractual’ relationship slowly turns into a serious one for both Raj Kiran and Rekha without the knowledge of each other during her pregnancy. Eventually, the ‘contractual’ relationship turns into a marriage when the child is born.

The producer-director-story writer of the film, Vinod Pande has an interesting profile. Apart from being a producer-director, he is also an actor, writer, lyricist, and editor. He produced, directed, and acted in his first full length Hindi feature film, ‘Ek Baar Phir’ (1979) which was entirely made in London as he was then based in London.  This was followed by ‘Ye Nazdeekiyan’ (1982), ‘Star’ (1982), ‘Sach’ (1989), ‘Akeli’ (1999), ‘Sins’ (2005), ‘Red Swastik’ (2007), ‘Chaloo Movie’ (2011) among others. His film are mostly on the subject of man-woman relationship. He has also made popular TV serials such as ‘Air Hostess’ (1985-86) and ‘Reporter’ (1992-97). He worked as programming head for Sahara TV (1997-2000). He is also the author of three novellas, ‘The Don’s Wife’ (2013), ‘Saanvri: The Story of a Concubine’ (2016) and ‘Destiny’.

Uttar Pradesh born, Vinod Pande (15/08/1940) completed M.A. in Social Work from University of Udaipur. During his college days, he actively participated in plays and stage shows as he was interested in the film industry. In early 1960s, Vinod Pande moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) and got a temporary job as a market researcher. During his spare time, he participated in the plays broadcast on AIR and acted in amateur theaters. He also started getting small roles in Hindi films. By this time, he had got a permanent job as an executive in a travel agency of the Bajaj Group company.

When Vinod Pande was about to secure a few important assignments in Hindi films as an actor, in 1966, he got an opportunity under the ‘Employment Voucher’ scheme of the British Government to migrate to London. He spent about 15 years in London working in the Department of Inland Revenue of the British Government. During his civil service, he was allowed to work as a part-time contract job as a Hindi news reader of the BBC World Service. Because of his experience in AIR, gradually he became a fairly regular Hindi Newsreader and occasional presenter of ‘Current Affairs’ program of BBC World Service. He also got opportunity to interview Hindi film stars and other artists whenever they were on a visit to London. He also enrolled at the British Film Institute to study the works of world’s famous film directors.

Since his full-time civil service job did not give him time to pursue his interest in the film making, Vinod Pande resigned from the job and set up his own advertising agency in London. Apart from making few advertising films, he produced and directed his first documentary film titled ‘London Mein Bharat’. It was about Indian settlers in Southall, a suburb of London. [Information based on an interview of Vinod Pande taken by Vinita Nanda, published in ‘Daily Eye’, October 07, 2009].

‘Ek Baar Phir’ (1979), his first Hindi film made in London became a box office hit apart from the film being critically acclaimed. The success of this film made him to move from London to Mumbai permanently. Another trigger point for his moving to India was that the film was not allowed entry in National Film Awards and other awards in India since it was entirely made abroad. So, he decided to make his future films in India. He has made 9 Hindi films apart from making TV serials and short films.

In the later part of his life, Vinod Pande has kept himself busy in writing novellas, making some short films and running his Youtube channel, ‘Vinod Pande Entertainment’.

‘Ek Naya Rishta’ has 5 songs written by Nida Fazli (3) and Naqsh Lyallpuri (2). All the songs were set to music by Khayyam. I am presenting the first song “Jise Samjhe The Hum Afsaana Kal Tak” from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Bhupinder Singh and Lata Mangeshkar. Lyrics are written by Nida Fazli. It is a background song played almost towards the end of the film and is picturised on Raj Kiran and Rekha in their respective houses.

The background to the song is that Aarti (Rekha) is in advance stage of her pregnancy. Her motherly instinct is not able to digest the fact that she would be separated from her child once born as she has to handover the child to Rajiv (Raj Kiran) and leave the house as per the contract. In the spur of the moment, Aarti leaves the house to an unknown destination without the knowledge of Rajiv. A search for Aarti proves futile. It is at this juncture that the song is played in the background separately in the houses of Rajiv and Aarti with the flashback of their togetherness in the interludes.

The prelude of the song starts with flute music which, to my mind, points to Raag Pahadi-based tune. This raag is generally used when lovers are separated and are longing for reunion. The lyrics of the song sum up the pain of separation. Rajiv is missing her, but he is not sure whether Aarti has similar feelings toward him. Similarly, Aarti has realized how much she missed Rajiv, but she is not sure whether he feels the same about her.

It is unfortunate that a lovely and serene musical composition of Khayyam, rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupendra Singh on the words crafted by Nida Fazli has remained an underrated song.

Song – Jise Samjhe The Hum Afsaana Kal Tak (Ek Naya Rishta) (1988) Singer – Bhupinder Singh, Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Nida Fazli, MD – Khayyam

Lyrics
(Based on Audio Clip)

jise samjhe the hum afsaana kal tak
jise samjhe the hum afsaana kal tak
wo afsaana haqeeqat to nahin hai

wo afsaana haqeeqat to nahin hai
jo hum se door bhi hain paas bhi hain
jo hum se door bhi hain paas bhi hain
kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

jinhen hum chhod aaye zindagi mein
jinhen hum chhod aaye zindagi mein
wahi shaamil hain har gham mein khushi mein
jo apna haal hai diwaangi mein

jo apna haal hai diwaangi mein
udhar bhi aisi haalat to nahin hai

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

har ek manzar se ek chehra banaana
har ek manzar se ek chehra banaana
yun hi kaagaz pe kuchh likhna mitaana
kisi ko yaad kar kar ke bhulaana
kisi ko yaad kar kar ke bhulaana
akelepan ki aadat to nahin hai

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

fazaayen sooni sooni si hain aise
fazaayen sooni sooni si hain aise
kahin kuchh kho gaya ho apna jaise
hum apne aapko bahalaayen kaise

hum apne aapko bahalaayen kaise
ye baichaini hi raahat to nahin hai

kahin unse mohabbat to nahin hai

ye duniya yun to kehne ko wahi hai
ye duniya yun to kehne ko wahi hai
magar lagta hai ab kuchh ajnabi hai
na jaane kaun si is mein kamee hai
na jaane kaun si is mein kamee hai
hamen un ki zaroorat to nahin hai

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

jise samjhe the hum afsaana kal tak
wo afsaana haqeeqat to nahin hai
jo hum se door bhi hain paas bhi hain

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

kahin un se mohabbat to nahin hai

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 11
———————————————————————————

‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ (1978) was directed by Raj Kapoor for his home production RK Films, Bombay. He dedicated this movie to his beloved friend singer Mukeshchandra whom we fondly know as Mukesh.

The cast of the film includes Kanhaiyalal, AK Hangal, David, Hari Shivdasani, Leela Chitnis, Sheetal, Baby Padmini, Baby Komal, Tun Tun, Vishwa Mehra, Mansaram, Pardesi, Shriram Shastry, Nandini, Mona, Seema, Mani, Yasmin, Bina, Subroto Mahapatra and Javed Khan.

The story of this movie was written by Jainendra Jain. Radhu Karmakar was the Director of Photography. Raj Kapoor who produced and directed this movie was also the editor of this movie.

HFGK lists nine songs and one dialogue track released on records of this movie. The total nine songs are including of their parts and the title song is mentioned to be in four parts. There are two more songs (the ‘aarti’ and ‘shlokas’ with the titles, and ‘’Yashomati maiyya se boley…’) in the movie having two parts. Narendra Sharma, Anand Bakshi and Vithhal Bhai Patel wrote the songs for this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Bhupinder, Mukesh, and Nitin Mukesh who debuted as a singer in this movie had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 22.03.1978 with restricted viewing certificate.

Three songs from ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram-1978’ posted on the blog earlier are as follows;

Song  Posted On
Yashomati maiyya se boley Nandlala  07.09. 2008
 Satyam Shivam Sundaram  15.03.2010
Suni jo unke aane ki aahat …  11.02.2020

I watched this movie much later in nineties (I think so). However, I remember, in my childhood, the two songs from this movie were very much popular viz. the title song “Satyam Shivam Sundaram“and “Yashomati maiyya se boley Nandlala” as they were frequently played on loud speakers and radio. The title song was also the most favorite number of almost all ‘orchestras’ which used to play it during ‘Ganesh Festival’ or other festival programs. However, I didn’t like both these songs then.

Rather I very much like the song “Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal” and the song being presented today, maybe I heard them on radio during those years. Later on, when I bought the album of this movie (an audio cassette in late eighties) the song “Suni Jo Unke Aane Ki Aahat” also become my favorite song from this movie with all other songs.

When I checked the ‘annual Binaca Geetmala’ for the year ‘1978’ I found ‘Yashomati maiyya se…’ (as expected), at number seven and the song was, surprisingly for me, not the title song of the movie but it was “Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal” ranking at number twenty-four of the list.

Well coming back to the ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ today we have two songs posted on this day ten years back as follows;

 Song  Movie title-Year  Remarks
Satyam Shivam Sundaram  Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978)  03 of 09 songs posted
Hai isi mein pyaar ki aabroo  Anpadh (1962)  All Songs posted on the

Blog

As one of the movies i.e. ‘Anpadh’ (1962) is already ‘Yippeeee éd’ on the blog we have ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ to be represented with a song on the blog today. The song I have selected today was noted long time back and was pending for posting. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupendra. I like this song very much and particularly for those few lines sung by Bhupendra Singh which makes this song very very special of course with great singing by Lata Mangeshkar and so greatly composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal to the beautiful lyrics by Vithhal Bhai Patel.

Let us enjoy this wonderful song now …

(Note: – In the movie, this song appears in two parts. The video of the second part is not available now however full audio of this song is available).

R D Burman in 1970s was mostly known for composing songs that dazzled the senses. But he could also compose songs that touched the heart strings of the listeners. He tended to create the later kind of songs when he tied up with Gulzar as a lyricist. That way R D Burman was somewhat similar to Kishore Kumar who was known to be a happy go lucky character most of the time but when he produced movies, then most of his movies (with the exception of “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”) were serious movies.

“Kinaara”(1977) is a movie which was produced by Pranlal Mehta and directed by Gulzar. Gulzar in fact also wrote the script of this movie as well as the lyrics of its songs. “Kinaara” (1977) was one of the few movies that was well recieved by the masses as well as the media. This movie had Jeetendra, Hema Malini, Dharmendra, Shrreram Laagoo, Dina Pathak etc in this movie.

When I post songs in this blog, the easiest part is to find the song to post. I mostly stumble upon songs on youtube or dailymotion and decide to post the song. Sometimes, while posting songs based on farmaishes, I find that locating songs become the most difficult part, in case the song is an obscure song.

What makes a song tick and makes it hummable? Here let me talk about just this song. If you have not seen the movie or the visuals of the song, you can still visualise the theme by listening to the lyrics and the tune. One can make out that the two persons are on a hill station and are yearning for those days when they had time and the life went on at a leisurely pace. Listen to the lyrics, and listen to the music, both go hand in hand like the two actors ( Sanjiv Kumar and Sharmila Tagore) enacting the scene, at perfect harmony with each other.
