Blog Day :

5092 Post No. : 17021

Today 27th June, 2022 is the eighty-third birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman. On our blog we already have few posts coming on this occasion. However, I was looking for a song written by Majrooh Sultanpuri who had a long association with RD Burman. Also, I wish that I should share a song sung by Kishore Kumar because the songs I shared for today didn’t have any Kishore Kumar songs.

So, here I am presenting a song from the 1980 movie ‘Aanchal’. And incidentally this happens to be a song picturized on Rajesh Khanna. I think this is a ‘bonus’ song for today’s celebration.

‘Aanchal’ was directed by Anil Ganguly for Bemisal Films Pvt Ltd. It was produced by Prem Lalwani and Mohan Lalwani. It had Rajesh Khanna, Rakhee Gulzar, Rekha, Prem Chopra, and Amol Palekar, with Leela Mishra, Shammi, Dinesh Hingoo, Ranjana Sachdev, Birbal, Sarita Devi, Asit Sen, Swapan Guha, Amol Sen, Deepak, Master Ravi, Lekha Chauhan, Master Sandeep, Suresh Desai, Saukat Bharti, Jankidas, Rajkishore, Viju Khote, and others. Abhi Bhattacharya had a friendly appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Tara Shankar Bandopadhya, and dialogues were written by Ehsan Rizvi. Screenplay of this movie was written by Sachin Bhowmick. Editing of this movie was done by Waman Bhonsle and Gurudutt Shirali. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.09.1980.

This movie has six songs. Lyrics for the songs in this movie are written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by RD Burman. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, and Swapan Chakravarty had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

One song from this movie “Paise Ka Kaajal Daike Na Lo Hamri Jaan has already been discussed on the blog on 18.07.2018. This post was presented by our beloved Raja Saab and here is a brief about this movie he had mentioned in his write-up.

The film stars Kaka, Rekha, Raakhee, Amol Palekar and Prem Chopra. It’s a village-based story, where Kaka and Amol Palekar are brothers, with Raakhee married to Amol Palekar. Since Kaka is her husband’s younger brother, Raakhee treats him with great affection. Kaka too has highest regard for his bhabhi. Prem Chopra, who has a score to settle with Amol Palekar, plays mischief, creating misunderstanding in his mind about the relationship between Raakhee and Kaka. Also, doing the same to Rekha, who is in love with Kaka.

To be honest, the film picks up only in the second half – the first half is rather slow. But maybe it is a build-up to show the relationships between the characters. I was rather keen for the film to get on with the plot.

We will be discussing the details about the other songs in this movie in the future posts on the blog. Regarding the songs from this movie, I think “Bas Meri Jaan Bas. . . Maan Le Meri Baat”, “Paise Ka Kaajal Daike Na Lo Hamri Jaan“, and “Bhor Bhaye Panchhi” were well known songs from this movie. Though the overall musical score is good and other songs from this movie also needs to be listened, like the song today.

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and on screen it is Rajesh Khanna performing on this song with other artistes also seen in the picturization of this song. As mentioned above lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by RD Burman.

Let us listen to and enjoy the today’s song now …

ae lo
ham ghode se gir gaye
hi hi

Blog Day : 3883 Post No. : 14910

———————————————–
Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 12
————————————————

Ten years ago, this day in 2009, the film ‘Darling Darling’ made its debut on our blog. This 1977 production from Fortune Films International, has six songs. The song that brought in this film to our blog is the Kishore Kumar favorite – “Aise Na Mujhe Tum Dekho”.

Then, over the past decade, only one more song of this film was added. And now, in the 10 Year Challenge series, we are bringing on the third song of this film. An interesting side thought – maybe in the years to come, this blog and its data, relating to various stats, as well as patterns of how the films went from debut to yippee, will become fodder for PhD research projects at universities that have film studies departments. Research scholars will be analyzing such data to find correlations between the patterns of appearance of the songs of a film, and the perceived quality of its music, and its popularity curve. Interesting food for thought, right?

This 1977 film of Dev Anand, is not his own Navketan production. It was still the 1970s, and despite a descending graph, Dev Anand was still in demand enough to be called upon by other friendly production houses to play the lead role. In 1977, he was in his 54th year, and still going strong as the hero.

The film, from the banner of Fortune Films International, was directed by Gogi Anand. The star cast of this film reveals many a names which can be considered as fixtures in Dev Anand films; check out the names – Dev Anand, Zeenat Aman, Mehmood, Jeevan, Nadira, Dhiraj Kumar, Poonam, Durga Khote, Sajjan, Helen, Ranjan, Raj Verma, Shivraj, Shaifali, V Gopal, Jankidas, Hercules, Jhankna Desai, Geeta Khanna, Juliyan, Baby Guddi, Baby Padmini, Monto, Sheikh, Beerbal, Shahid Bijnauri, and Dhanna.

This song is performed in a mental asylum – a device that is used by directors to inject free format comic relief into the storyline. Dev Anand and Mehmood are leading the song performance. Dev Anand is sporting a full  beard as part of a disguise, and Mehmood appears in a tie and his birthday suit – well, almost 🙂 . As the song progresses, one realizes that they are on a search and rescue mission of some sort, as we see interludes of familiar faces as captives under duress. We get fleeting glimpses of Zeenat Aman, Sajjan and Nadira. We have already had a glimpse of Jeevan, in the very first scene of this song, leaving the premises with a large suitcase in his hand. One can also identify junior actor Sheikh, just behind Dev Anand and Mehmood, as the opening lines of this song are being rendered. I am sure there are more junior artists in this crowd of ‘mad’ persons which can be named, but I am not able to identify more.
[Note: Regulars will recall actor Sheikh – he has performed on screen, the iconic qawwaali “Hamen To Loot Liya Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne“, in the film ‘Al Hilal’ (1958).]

The song is penned by Anand Bakshi and the music composition is by RD Burman. The singing voices are of Kishore Kumar and Mehmood.

This brings on the third song of this film – across a span of ten years. 🙂

Here is another gem of a duet from the film Apna Haath Jagannath (1960). Three song from this movie are already discussed in these pages. This one is a fun filled duet by Kishore and Asha Bhosle. I had seen this song many years ago on Doordarshan in the Chitrahaar program. The words and the music was all lost from memory, just the visual of Kishore Kumar walking, and being followed by a lady in a car remained in the mind. Recently, browsing through YouTube, I chanced to see this visual as the thumbnail image, and lo, I found this lost friend once again.

Regular visitors of this blog may have been noticing that I was discussing lots and lots of songs composed by Anil Biswas these days. And a few regulars may also be aware of the reason behind that. These days I am quite particular to see that major artists who have less than 100 of their songs in this blog reach their century of songs as quickly as I can help it.

Think of Sheikh Mukhtar, the hero of so many ‘Dada’ and ‘Ustad’ movies, the proverbial angry young man of the 50s and 60s ‘B’ screen Hindi movies long before Amitabh got that tag in the 70s and 80s. Now think of the same he-man in a skirt dress and bob cut hair? And dancing the twist, and pat-a-cake, no less?

In the early 1970s, when I was growing as a pre teen kid, I used to listen to Hindi movie songs and I longed to watch the movies containg these songs. The movies that I wold have dearly loved to see those days, since I loved their songs, were “Seeta Aur Geeta” (1972) and “Victoria No. 203” (1972). But unfortunately I could never see these two movies at that time. That remains a big regret of my life to this day.
