“Nakhre”(1951) was produced by Mohanlal Wahai and directed by Surya Kumar for Paro Pictures, Bombay. This movie had Geeta Bali, Nasir Khan, Jeewan, David, Heera Sawant, Vijaya, Badri Prasad, Ramesh, Laxmanrao, M S Pathak, Paro etc in it.

There were ten songs in this movie that were sung by eight singers and penned by four lyricists. Four songs from the movie has been discussed in the blog. Here is the fifth song from “Nakhre”(1951) to appear in the blog.

This song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.

The song sounds like a nautanki song, where the dancer wants to go to the “mela” (fair). No, not to get lost but to meet her beloved there. The beloved in not some outsider, but her husband. 😉 Yes, she wants to get away from the stifling living conditions at her household where her mother in law make her do household jobs and she is unable to find time to be with her husband. Very cute but realistic scenarios for Indian women not only those days but even today.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Ae jee main to odh chunariya aayi hoon mele mein (Nakhre)(1951) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Hansraj Bahl

Lyrics

o o o o o o o

o o o o o o

ae ji main to odh chunariya
o o o
main to odh chunariya
aayi hoon mele mein
o jo more baanke sanwariya

milna akele mein

saas mori tyohaar ke din bhi
haaye gobar thhapwaaye
chakki choolha chauka bartan
aur bhaandi ghiswaaye
o ji mera ji ghabraaye
o o
mera ji ghabraaye
jhoothhe jhamele mein
ae ji main to odh chunariya
aayi hoon mele mein

ik paise mein bindiya khareedi
aur do paise mein surma
ae ji paani puri khaayi udhaar
aur mufat mein khaaya korma
o ji phir paan khareeda
o o
phir paan khareeda
khote adhele mein
ae ji main to odh chunariya
aayi hoon mele mein

motariya mein kabhi na baithhoon
jiya mora ghabraaye
tamtam mein baithoon to kamariya
sau sau bal kha jaaye
o o o o
o o
kamariya sau sau bal kha jaaye
kamariya
hoye hoye hoye hoye
sau sau bal kha jaaye

ae ji main to sair karungi
o o o
main to sair karoongi
baith ke thele mein
ae ji main to odh chunariya
aayi hoon mele mein

Countdown is in progress, and we are slowly inching forward to the magic milestone.

Merry Christmas and a Happy 9200th post, to all readers and friends. Celebration time once again, and as I said, we are now just seven more century jumps away from that magical number of 10,000 songs on this blog. By the current accepted rate of comfort, we should be making it sometimes in April time frame. Gosh, the built up for an exciting interlude is now setting in.

Today (1 may 2013) is the 94th birth anniversary of Manna Dey. Radio/ TV stations, sites etc must be celebrating this occasion with some of his songs. It is easy for most of them. All they have to do is discuss some of the well known Manna Dey songs from movies like “Zanjeer”, “Upkaar”, “Dil Hi To Hai”, “Anand”, “Mera Naam Joker” etc and that is all. The same well known songs can be used on other similar occasions as well.

It was in 1949 that Lata sang a song about “Laal dupatta”and that song, namely Hawa me udta jaaye(Barsaat) has become a much loved timeless classic.

Ten years later, Lata sang a song about “dhaani chunariya”. This song is extremely melodious and sweet, but this time the movie as well as the song failed to make ripples and by now this song has ended up as an obscure song.
