Hullo Atuldom
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia was born on 1st July 1938 to a father who wanted the son to be a wrestler. The obedient son did go to the Akhada and trained with his father along with learning music and practising at a friend’s home.
Pt. Hariji has said once, and I quote, “he was not very good at wrestling but the training had helped him build up strength and stamina which has helped him play the bansuri (flute) to this day.”
Initially he was learning vocal music but switched to playing the flute and Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi was his guru. After a few years, Annapurna Devi was his guide and that is when he turned to playing the flute left-handed. Panditji is the recipient of numerous awards including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. He has collaborated with Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma since the 60s with albums like “Call of the Valley”. The Shiv-Hari combo gave music to a few Hindi films too, most of them from YashRaj Films.
Today we are wishing Panditji on turning 84 a few days back with a composition that is from Yash Chopra directed, Firoz A Nadiadwala produced and May 1993 released “Parampara”.
Much of the movie was shot in the famous boarding school of Ajmer -Mayo College. It starred Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher as the seniors. Raveena Tandon, Neelam Kothari, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan (this was his debut in Hindi films) formed the young brigade. Ashwini Bhave and Ramya Krishnan were cast as Vinod Khanna’s wives – one chosen by him and the other by his father Sunil Dutt. Saif and Aamir were VK’s children who are educated in a boarding school where they sing today’s song. Anand Bakshi wrote the songs.
This is a song which has Amit Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar singing for the collegiates who are enjoying after “lights out” (I have seen this movie a long time back, hope I am correct?)
3rd July a very important date in the life of a singer who has carried the legacy of his family, in HFM. His uncle began as an actor who used to sing his own songs; most of which are popular to this date. I am speaking of the Ganguly family and the uncle I spoke of was Ashok Kumar. 3rd July happens to be the birthdate of Amit Kumar who was born into the Ganguly Family as son of Kishore Kumar (a singer-actor in his own league) and Ruma (who was also an actor-singer).
There are singers and people connected with the arts in Ruma’s lineage too -Ruma’s mother was also a singer. It is hardly surprising that Amit Kumar took to singing early in life. There are interviews available in public Domain where Amit Kumar has spoken about how he used to sing at Durga Pooja pandals and how his mother complained to his ‘Baba’ etc. Amit Kumar has also spoken about how his father “Baba” took him to Bombay (Mumbai back then) and how he began his journey. One thing about Amit Kumar is that he never tried to ape his father. His voice was distinct and we have a few duets of Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar where the distinction is obvious (two of these are on the blog.)
We have had 58 Amit Kumar songs (only) on the blog. The categories listed on the right hand side of the blog show that he has had duets with all possible male and female playback singers. We also have songs (on the blog) where he has appeared on-screen. Today- 3rd July – we wish Amit Kumar on turning 70.
What!!!! did I say 70!!!! Unbelievable. He is still so youthful when we see him on the various reality shows as judge. He is his father’s biggest fan. And we are his fans. A very Very Happy Birthday Amitda.
Belated Wishes to Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia on turning an year older.
With this Shiv-Hari song from “Parampara” which makes its debut on the blog.

It can be seen from the table of 1991 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 56 songs in 15 movies released in 1991. It was a good recovery from 1990, hen she got to sing just 12 songs in 9 movies.
By end of 1991, Lata Mangeshkar had just crossed 5000 songs as a playback singer. Out of these 5009 songs, solo songs added up to exactly 3300 songs.
5 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in movies of 1991 have been covered in the blog. That leaves us with 52 songs from 16 movies of 1991 that are yet to be covered.
Alphabetically “100 days”(1991) is the first movie of 1991 that offers us a Lata Mangeshkar song to be covered in the blog.
“100 days”(1991) was produced by Jay Mehta Mehta and directed by Partho Ghosh for Jay Vijay Enterprises, Bombay. The movie had Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Javed Jaffery, Sabeeha(special appearance), Laxmikant Berde, Kunika Sadanand, Moon Moon Sen, Ajit Vachani, Jay Kalgutkar (introducing) ,Vijay Arora, Chunnu Mehra, Harbans Darshan.M.Arora, Prem Sagar, Sunita, Yusuf. They were supported by Shashikiran, Neelam Mehra, Shivaji Satam, Mahaveer Shah, Raja Duggal, Kanti Karan, Ramakant Burman, Anthony Andrade etc.
This movie was a remake of a remake of a foreign movie. The original Italian movie “Sette Note In Nero” (1977) served as the inspiration for Tamil film “Nooravathu Naal” (1984). Its suceess led into it being dubbed into Telugu as “Nurava Roju” (1984) and remade into Malayalam as “Aayiram Kannukal” (1986)
“100 days”(1991) had six songs in it. Voice of Lata Mangeshkar song was present in five of these songs. One song (non Lata Mangeshkar song) has been covered so far. It means that the remaining five songs from the movie are all Lata Mangeshkar songs.
Here is one of those songs.
This song is a dance song of the kind that was very popular those days. It is sung by Amit Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and female chorus. The song is picturised as a dance song on Javed Jafrey, Madhuri Dixit and others. Jackie Shroff and Ajit Vachaani are also seen in the picturisation.
Lyrics of the song and other details were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Birth Anniversary of R. D. Burman on 27/06/2021.
———————————————————–
Today morning I was thinking how there are a few songs from the films like ‘Betaab’ ‘Rocky’ etc that are not posted. With the same thought came the reminder of movies like ‘Love story’, in which Kumar Gaurav, the son of Jubilee star Rajendra Kumar, and Vijeta Pandit, the sister of Sulakshna Pandit, made their debut. There was a spate of star sons joining the movies at that time. Even Dev Anand launched his son, Manoj Kumar launched his brother. From what I read in magazines, these star sons had to learn film acting at Tanuja Chandra’s acting institute, where they were taught all type of things which included horse riding and fighting etc. They were also taught to speak Urdu, which was not part of their education otherwise.
Except for Manoj Kumar’s films, all such films had R D Burman’s music as he was believed to be the success formula of such films.
The senior stars would give interviews to “Shama’a”’s editor who went by the pen name ‘Musaafir’ about their son’s debut movie and their coaching in various skill required to be a successful hero. I am positive about having read these things about Rajendra Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand and Dharmendra. Most of these star sons worked in some films for a few years, then they disappeared from films. Only Sanjay Dutt and Sunny Deol were more successful and they are still around.
The film “Love Story” ‘s starcast is Kumar Gaurav, Vijayta, Rajendra Kumar, Vidya Sinha, Danny Denzongpa, Amjad Khan, Jagdish Raj, T.P. Jain, Kamaldeep, Azad, Jezebel, Gufi Paintal, Farooque Shorty, Subhash, Amarjeet Sunder, Hangama, Shakeel, Laxman Thumre, Aruna Irani, Prem Kalra, Dev Kumar, Ram Mohan, Bharat Kapoor, Ram Sethi, Bina. The film is jointly directed by Rahul Rawail and Rajendra Kumar, with Rajendra Kumar producing the film. The music is by R. D. Burman and lyricist is the evergreen Anand Bakshi.
I have seen two duets from this movie now, of which only one song is posted. I have read this post, which talks of the twin solos of this film “Yaad aa rahi hai”, which was my personal favourite from this film. This song should also be posted soon.
But I am choosing one of the duets which I saw just now. Both have outdoor shooting and are expressive of various emotions and 5 minutes plus long. There was a short series of a sort I had planned for outdoorsy songs, which I seem to have waylaid. Links of many such songs are saved in my laptop.
In the film ‘Love story’, which I have seen in Minerva theatre when it was released, there is some triangle love story of Vidya Sinha, Rajendra Kumar and Danny Danzongpa. Vidya Sinha and Rajendra Kumar were to marry, but she ends up married to Danny, and Vijeta is their daughter. Rajendra Kumar marries someone else (Beena?) who is now dead, and Kumar Gaurav is the son. So, there is some animosity among the set of parents also, apart from villain.
Now between my husband and me, we have recalled the whole set of characters and their roles in the story. Vijetaa is a much pampered and cossetted daughter as Danny is very much possessive of her. Kumar Gaurav’s father is a little strict, but he knows how to spin stories around and not get a scolding. Kumar Gaurav sets his wrist watch an hour behind to hoodwink his father Rajendra Kumar upon being late for an event. Amjad Khan is the comic relief as the Hawaldar who arrests the two love birds, who have eloped in the 70’s fashion. This fashion or trend of eloping was truly started with ‘Bobby’. Now what Amjad Khan does is takes one “hathkadi” and ties them both together on one end each of hathkadi. This makes it easy for them to elope again, after being arrested. Dev Kumar is a friend or henchman of Danny Danzongpa, who is interested in getting Vijeta married to his son. So, he has more motive in separating the couple, to the extant even wanting to kill Kumar Gaurav. But all is well in the end, and it is a happy ending.
In the climax fight sequences, Kumar Gaurav saves the life of Danny and the latter is then convinced that Kumar Gaurav is the better bet for his daughter.
Lata Mangeshkar and Amit kumar are singing for Vijeta and Kumar Gaurav. The songs of this film were very popular back then. Lyrics are a breeze, as I remember them all, but have to do more work on the words interspersed and the singers voices. I am presenting this well written, composed and shot happy song in outdoor locales of maybe Manali or someplace near the himalaya’s which can be seen in the background, to commemorate the memory of Rahul Dev Burman on his birth anniversary.

Song-Dekho maine dekha hai ye ik sapna (Love Story)(1981) Singers-Amit Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics (as per audio version):
Dekho main ne dekha hai yeh ik sapna
phooolon ke shehar mein hai ghar apna
kya samaa hai
tu kahaan hai
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
kitna haseen hai yeh ek sapna
phooolon ke shehar mein hai
ghar apna
kya samaa hai
tu kahaan hai
main aaya aaya aaya aaya
aa jaa aa
yehaan teraa meraa naam likkha hai ae
rastaa nahin yeh a’am likkha hai
ho yeh hai darwaaza
jahaan tu khadi hai
andar aa jaao
sardi badi hai
yehan se nazaara aa
dekho parbaton kaa
jhaankoon main kahaan se
kahaan hai jharokhaa
yeh yehaan hai
tu kahaan hai
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
kitna haseen hai yeh ik sapna
phoolon ke shehar mein hai ghar apna
kya samaa hai
tu kahaan hai
main aaya aaya aaya aaya
aa jaa aa
achchha yeh bataao
kahaan pe hai paani ee
baahar beh rahaa hai
jharnaa deewaani ee
bijli nahin hai
yahi ik gham hai
teri bindiya kya
bijli se kam hai
chhodo mat chhedo
baazaar jaao
jaata hoon jaaungaa
pehle yehaan aao
shaam jawaan hai
tu kahaan hai
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
dekho main ne dekha hai yeh ik sapna
phoolon ke shehar mein hai ghar apna
kya samaa hai
tu kahaan hai
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
kaisi pyaari hai yeh
chhoti si rasoyi ee
o ham donon hain bas
dooja nahin koyi ee
iss kamre mein
hongi meethhi baatein
uss kamre mein
guzrengi raatein
yeh to bolo hogi
kahan pe ladaayi
maine woh jagah hi
nahin banaayi
pyaar yehaan hai
tu kahaan hai
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
kitna haseen hai yeh ek sapna
phoolon ke shehar mein hai ghar apna
kya samaa hai
tu kahaan hai
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
dekho maine dekha hai yeh ek sapna
phooolon ke shehar mein hai
ghar apna
kya samaa hai
tu kahaan hai
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
aa jaa aa

I came across a nice number from ‘Police Public’ (1990) by chance when I happened to click here on a Lollywood number “Mein Jis Din Bhula Doon Tera Pyar Dil Se” penned by Masroor Anwar for Khushboo (1979). On that YouTube web-page, I also noticed the same mukhda under this ‘Police Public’ number.
Similar – or even identical – mukhdas are not all that rare; and Lollywood and Bollywood copying each other’s themes, tunes and lyrics was not unheard of in the yesteryears. But what struck me was almost identical lyrics – albeit in different settings and tunes.
Be it as it may be, ‘Police Public’, a Vijay Mehta production, was directed by Esmayeel Shroff. It has a crime-corruption busting theme with Raaj Kumar as a fearless senior C.B.I. inspector as its chief protagonist.
