#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 94 # Kalyanji-Anandji – Year 1975
———————————————–———————————————
Today 30th June 2020 is 92nd birth anniversary of Kalyanjibhai Virjibhai Shah (30 June 1928 – 24 August 2000) of the great music director duo Kalyanji-Anandji.
On this occasion as a tribute to him here is a song from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Rafoo Chakkar’. I vaguely remember to have watched this movie with my parents and brothers in my childhood. I was just around seven years old then (considering the date of release of this movie). However, the songs of this movie have always remained in my memory. I think they were very popular in those years and were frequently heard on loud speakers and radio. Particularly the songs ‘chhuk chhuk chhak chhak Bombay se Baroda tak’, ‘tumko mere dil ne’, ‘kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai’, ‘dil lena buri balaa hai’, ‘ae zamaane tu kar le sitam pe sitam’…
Almost all songs from this movie were good and I have a big nostalgia of the songs of this movie. So, when I became a member of this blog I had shared a couple of songs, and one of them ‘tumko mere dil ne’ was posted on 21.01.2014 (much later according to me, because when I joined the blog I always thought all songs of the seventies must be already there . 🙂
‘Tum ko mere dil ne’ has always been my big favorite and so is ‘kisi pe dil agar’ but then there is one more song from this movie which brings back memories for me and I am going to present this song today.
And since this song was pending since 2013, I thought I should go with it instead of taking another song when I was thinking of a post on this occasion today. All these years this song has been in my dormant memory associated with the name of this movie ‘Rafoo Chakkar’. I have no recollection of having watched this movie again either in theatre or on TV channels. I have only watched a couple of its songs on TV. I may have watched parts of this movie when it was being aired on TV.
“Rafoo Chakkar-1975’ was a presentation from the ‘House of Nadiadwala’. It was produced by I.A. Nadiadwala for ‘M.I. Films Pvt Ltd’. This movie was directed by Narinder Bedi.
Ajay Kumar was the chief assistant director while assistant director was Kapil Kapoor. Raj Bedi was the dialogue director.
Story of this movie was written by Jayant Dharmadhikari, whereas the dialogues were written by Kadar Khan. K.K. Shukla had written the screenplay of this movie.
Editing of this movie was done by Babubhai Thakkar.
It had Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rajindernath, Faryal, Asrani, Master Chikkoo with Paintal, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum, Shetty, Viju Khote, Shamim, Surender Shetty, K.N. Singh, Sudhir, Bhagwan, MacMohan, Man Mohan, Habib, Jankidas, M. Rajan, Tiwari, Mohan Sherry, Hiralal, Rajan Haksar, Goga, Dalpat, Sapru and Kamran.
Lyrics were written by Gulshan Bawra and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.
Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Kanchan, Mahesh Kumar and Aziz Nazan were the playback singers who had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
Jaikumar conducted the music while Frank Fernand was the arranger and Babla was the assistant in music of this movie.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 02.01.1975.
In 1975 there were a ‘dozen’ of movies where Kalyanji-Anandji had composed the music for them. Here is the list;
Sno. | Title | Year | Passed by Censor Board | Lyricist | Represented on the Blog</ |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Anokhaa | 1975 | 02.04.1975 | Indeewar, Sawan Kumar | N |
2 | Apne Dushman | 1975 | 19.11.1975 | Verma Malik, Qamar Jalalabadi | N |
3 | Bhoolaa Bhatkaa | 1975 | 13.10.1975 | Anand Bakshi | |
4 | Chori Mera Kaam | 1975 | 30.04.1975 | Verma Malik | Yes/Yippeeee’ed |
5 | Dharmaatmaa | 1975 | 30.04.1975 | Indeewar | Y |
6 | Do Thug | 1975 | 05.12.1975 | Rajinder Krishan | N |
7 | Faraar | 1975 | 11.11.1975 | Rajinder Krishan | Y |
8 | Himaalaya Se Ooncha | 1975 | 15.04.1975 | Indeewar | Y |
9 | Monto | 1975 | 15.05.1975 | Verma Malik | |
10 | Rafoo Chakkar | 1975 | 02.01.1975 | Gulshan Bawra | Y |
11 | Uljhan | 1975 | 31.10.1975 | M.G. Hashmat | Y |
12 | Zoro | 1975 | 31.10.1975 | Verma Malik |
None of the songs of this movie “Rafoo Chakkar-1975” make it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year. And only two compositions of Kalyanji-Anandji featured in that year’s list one from the previous years’ release ‘Haath Ki Safaai-1974’ i.e. ‘waadaa kar le sajnaa’ at number six and another from the movie ‘Dharmaatma-1975’ which was ‘tere chehre mein wo jaadu hai’ at number thirty-one.
The title song of ‘Uljhan-1975’ figured at number eleven in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala-1976’.
Let us now enjoy the today’s song which is sung by Aziz Nazan and Kanchan. On screen Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh are lip syncing the voices of Aziz Nazan and Kanchan whereas we can see Rajindernath, Paintal, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum and many others in the picturization of this song.
Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rajindernath and Paintal are performing ‘hippies’ in disguise (not for viewers) to get release of the captivated Sulochana and Mumtaz Begum.

Hullo Atuldom
Today I did a tiny research with the resources available at my disposal. I have inferred that the music duo Kalyanji Anandji have scored music for most of the movies where Feroz Khan was in the lead; till the time of Kalyanji’s passing in 2000. In fact, I found two Feroz Khan starring movies, on our blog, that are on the threshold of being yippeee’d. One has two songs left, but the album of that movie shows that Kalyanji-Anandji have given music for three sequences where there is no song. I am sure one music piece has Helen burning the dance floor, that is as brilliant as is the theme music for that movie. So for today we leave that movie alone and concentrate on the one that is one short of yippeee-hood.
That film is ‘Shankar Shambhu’ (1976). The four out of possible five songs from that move were posted thus:-
No. | Song Title | Post No. | Post Date |
1 | Hum Lootne Aaye Hain Hum Loot Ke Jaayenge | 11964 | 1-Apr-16 |
2 | Aa Pahunchi Hai Is Mele Mein Saddi Aaj Sawaari | 12492 | 25-Oct-16 |
3 | Mera Dil Chura Kar Na Aankhen Churaa | 15075 | 17-Jun-19 |
4 | Gar Nibhaane Ki Himmat Na Thhi Aap Mein | 15565 | 27-Apr-20 |
The final song of the movie is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohammad Rafi. It has Feroz Khan romancing Sulakshana Pandit in various locations. If my memory is right the couple have just got wet because they jump out of the boat on which they were having a joy ride in a lake to escape from constables led by Bhagwan Dada.
I don’t know what is there left to write about the music duo that the readers of this blog don’t know. So without much ado let us get to the song and thank Kalyanji Virji Shah (who would have been 92 today) and his brother Anandji Virji Shah for the treasure trove of songs that they have left for us to relish. And on the blog we have 583 from a possible 1435 songs i.e. not even halfway done.
With this post now, ‘Shankar Shambhu’ has all its songs on the blog.

Song – Bheege Huye Jalwon Par Aise Na Nazar Daalo (Shankar Shambhu) (1976) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Sahir Ludhianvi, MD – Kalynji Anand ji
Asha Bhosle + Mohammed Rafi
Lyrics
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
dil chaahe idhar rakho
par aankh udhar daalo
bheege hue jalwon par
in garam nigaahon se
jazbaat bhadakte hain
in garam nigaahon se
jazbaat bhadakte hain
ehsaas sulagta hai
armaan dhadkate hai
ruk jaao
ruk jaao
ruk jaao abhi dil par
itna na asar dalo
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
bheege huye jalwon par
soyi hui dhadkan ko
khud tumne jagaaya hai
soyi hui dhadkan ko
khud tumne jagaaya hai
saanso se pukaara hai
nazaron se bulaaya hai
mat apni khataon ko
mat apni khataon ko
ab aur ke sar daalo
oooo
bheege huye jalwon par
aise na nazar daalo
bheege huye jalwon par
kab hamne kaha tumse
hum tum pe nahin marte
kab hamne kaha tumse
hum tum pe nahin marte
tum kuch bhi kaho tum par
ilzam nahi dharte
bereham ho
bereham ho
bereham ho qaatil ho
ye qatl bhi kar daalo
hmmm mm hmm
hmmm mm hmm
dil chaahe idhar rakho
par aankh udhar daalo

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–—-
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 93 # Remembering Lyricist Gauhar Kanpuri
—————————————–—————————————–
(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri # 3)
In one of my posts on the blog I had mentioned that the month of ‘June’ had many important days or anniversaries of film personalities (and the team members of this blog too).
Today 29th June is the ‘Remembrance Day’ of lyricist Gauhar Kanpuri. He passed away in the year 2002. He was active during the decade of seventies and thereafter till his death in 2002.
As per information available online he wrote lyrics for many songs of Hindi movies (more than one hundred fifty songs for around fifty-six movies). The detailed information about his filmography needs to be compiled. Also, I could not find much detailed information about his biography. (I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the information available on him).
He wrote the famous title song of ‘Saawan Ko Aane Do-1979’, then songs for the movies like ‘Zakhmee-1975’, ‘Do Khiladi-1976’, ‘Phir Janam Lenge Ham-1977’, ‘Haiwaan-1977’, ‘Dada-1978’, ‘Dulha Bikta Hai-1982’, ‘Woh Jo Haseena-1983’, and many others, and including ‘Baazigar-1993’ of the nineties.
I may have missed some of his movies where the songs were popular, but then, as I said above, the list of his filmography needs to be compiled from authentic sources.
Today’s song is from the movie “Shikshaa-1978”. All songs for this movie were written by him. Music was composed by Bappi Lahiri.
I have mentioned it in my earlier post here that there are many Bappi Lahiri compositions before early eighties or his ‘pre-Himmatwaala period which are very nice and needs to be discussed here. And in this case like in this movie ‘Shikshaa-1978’ we have the frequently heard ‘yaari hai phoolon se meri yaari hai’ sung by Bappi Lahiri and the gem ‘teri chhotisi ek bhool ne’ sung by Yesudas and other songs.
But, for today’s presentation I have selected this beautiful ‘Raam ‘Bhajan’ sung by Chandrani Mukherjee which I think was a lesser heard song from this movie. I was also not aware of this song till few weeks before and had not heard it earlier. And when I listened to it first time and second time and more it keeps growing on and I liked this song very much.
Gauhar Kanpuri has a long association with Bappi Lahiri and most of his works have compositions by Bappi Lahiri.
For this post I have compiled his list of movies with Bappi Lahiri in the decade of 1971 to 1980 where they had nine movies together;

9 | Jaan E Bahaar | 1979 | 10.08.1979 | Gauhar Kanpuri | Y |
“Shikshaa-1978” was directed by S. Ramnathan for ‘New Horizon Films, Bombay’. It had Rajkiran, Benjamin Gilani, Shashi Saxena, Jagdeep, Iftekhar, Urmila Bhatt, Pinchoo Kapoor, Krishna Dhawan, Surendra Kumar, Vikrant Taneja, Viju Khote, Brijen Mohan, Babbanlal and others. This movie introduced Sushma Verma, Master Sandeep and Bina Banerjee.
Bhagwan, Mukri, Jairaj, Shobha Khote, Pilu Wadia and Ritu Kamal made a guest appearance in this movie.
This movie had total five songs plus one music track as mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). The lyrics for the songs (all songs) were penned by Gauhar Kanpuri.
As mentioned above music was composed by Bappi Lahiri (assisted by Bansari Lahiri, Anil & Arun).
Arti Mukherjee, Anuradha Paudwal, Bappi Lahiri, Chandrani Mukherjee, Shailendra Singh and Yesudas had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.12.1978.
Let us now enjoy today’s song – a soulful rendition by Chandrani Mukherjee and lip synced on screen by Bina Banerjee. Also seen in picturization of this song are Benjamin Gilani, Rajkiran, Master Sandeep and others.
With this song the movie “Shikshaa-1978” makes its debut on the blog…

“Jaan e Bahaar”(1979) was produced by Prakash Agrawal and directed by Prakash Kapoor for Nav Chitra Bombay. This movie had Sachin,Sarika, Jagdeep,Paintal, Indrani Mukherjee, Pinchoo Kapoor, Madan Puri, Kanhaiya Lal, Lalita Pawar, Manju Bansal, Rajguru, Bhagwan Dada, Mushtaq merchant, Manhar Desai, Viju Khote, Renu, Ram Avtar, Bhagwan Sinha, Munshi Munnaka, Satyabhan Sinha, Pappu, Rasool, Sheikh, Ramesh Goel, Anu Dhavan, Sangeeta Bhosle, Deependra, Ashok.L.,Sattar Bhai, Manohar, Subhash Ohri, Baijnath, Masterjee, Ashat Kapoor, Vinod Sharma, B.C.Mahor, Sitaram, Aslam Khan, Satya Devi, Khushal, Raaj Anand, Rustum-e-Hind, Suresh Jain, Ashok Bhatia, with friendly appearances by Padma Khanna, Junior Mehmood, Asrani and Dheeraj Kumar.
Today (29 june 2020) is the 18th remembrance day of Gauhar Kanpuri.
I associate the name of Gauhar Kanpuri with the “Zakhmi”(1975) songs Abhi abhi thi dushmani and Jalta hai jiya mera. He also penned some other well known songs such as Jhoomta saawan dekho aaya (Do Khilaadi)(1976) , Allah karam karna Maula tu reham karna (Dada)(1978), Tumhe geeton mein dhaaloongaa (Saawan Ko Aane Do)(1979) etc. He continued to write lyrics for movies well into 1980 and even 1990s, but I remember him mostly for his songs of 1970s mentioned earlier.
As a tribute to Gauhar Kanpuri, here is the first (out of 5 songs) song from “Jaan e Bahaar”(1979). This song is sung by Rafi, Runa Laila and Anand Kumar Chitragupta. Gauhar Kanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. The song is picturised on Sachin, Sarika, Jagdeep and Kanhaiyalal. Sachin and Jagdeep share Rafi’s voice while Kaanhaiyalal lip syncs in Anand Kumar Chitragupta’s voice.
The picturisation is supposed to be a romantic cum comedy song, but I find the picturisation a big let down. Moviegoers of those days (inlcuding I myself) had wisely kept away from patronising this movie and the movie deservedly flopped at the box office.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.
With this song, “Jaan e Bahaar”(1979) makes its debut in the blog.

I do not remember when was the last time that I wrote about a NFS. I guess it might have been about 4-5 years ago. There is no specific reason for this gap. I came across a good NFS by Hemant kumar-my favourite singer- that prompted me to take it up for discussion today.
1936 to 1956 was a period when NFS were very very popular, not only in India, but wherever in the world Indian population lived. In western Music, NFS has been a routine since the beginning. For India, where different types of Music existed, it was not possible for one type of music to be popular all over the country. In olden days, like in the period of 1900 to 1940s, the Royalties of various states, depending upon the King’s or the Nawab’s liking and understanding, gave support to Classical music or Ghazals etc. Many Classical singers and Ghazal singers won the Patronage of different states. For the common public, there used to be Jalsas, stage shows or Mushayaras etc. The audience used to be different for each type of singing.
It was somewhere in the mid 1930s when an enterprising pair of a writer and a Musician decided to promote a new type of presentation – singing of Geets. Geet was a type of song which existed in Poetry, but it was not connected with Music in any way. Poet Lyricist Faiyyaz Hashmi and Musician Kamal Dasgupta identified a few aspiring singers and recorded Hashmi’s Geets in their voice. Probably the first ever such Non Filmi Song – a Geet – came out as a 78 RPM record. From 1934 to 1945, this pair (Faiyyaz and Kamal) made NFS extremely popular all over the country. For their 400 recorded songs (in Bangla and Hindi), they selected singers like Jagmohan, Pankaj Mullick, Talat Mahmood, Juthika Roy, Hemant Kumar and few others to sing these Non Film Songs. The NFS thus got established.
Those readers, who are in the age bracket of 60 to 85, will surely remember the popular NFS during their younger days. Sometimes the sales of such NFS exceeded even the popular Film songs! These NFS were popular from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, irrespective of the language barrier. Some of the popular NFS of yore were by Hemant Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Juthika Roy, Jagmohan, K L Saigal, Pankaj Mullick etc. Seeing the popularity of these NFS, even the Film Singers cut their NFS records. Some of them were Lata, Asha, Rafi, Mukesh, Shamshad Begum, Manna Dey, Laxmi Shankar, Jaddan bai, Noorjehan and even Indurani etc etc. These lists are only indicative and not exhaustive.
Today’s NFS is sung by Hemant Kumar (16.6.1920 – 26.9.1989). Hemant Kumar was very fond of singing from his childhood. While in school, one day, one teacher was absent and the period was blank. The boys started pressing HK to sing a song. He too, enthusiastically started singing and all the students started beating the benches to give ‘ music’ to his song. All this commotion went to the Head Master’s room. He came and Hemant was sent home immediately. Next day, his parents met the Headmaster, said sorry and Hemant was allowed in the school again. While he was in H.S.C. he got a call from A.I.R to sing songs.
After HSC, he joined Engineering college, but after an year, he left it and started singing. Columbia cut his few records in Bangla. Then came Bangla film playback singing in film “Nimai Sanyas”. In 1942 he gave a playback in hindi film ‘Meenakshi’-42, under the baton of Panbkaj Mullick. However there was no record issued. In film ‘Irada’-44, Pt. Amarnath gave him an opportunity to sing.
After film ‘Anand Math’-52, he came into Hindi films as an MD. He continued to sing songs even for any MD, who wanted him. Thus he sang more songs for other MDs than for his own films as MD ! On Lata’s insistence, he sang Marathi Koli Geet and some film songs too, in Marathi. He also sang in Gujarati, Punjabi,Oriya and Assamese language films. Vishwa Bharati gave him D.Litt. Sangeet Natak Akademi awarded him in 87. He refused Padmashree and later Padma Bhushan awards.
Today’s song is written by Fayyaz Hashmi, with music by Kamal Dasgupta. This must have been recorded sometime in the early 40s. This song is included in the 1961 LP No.33 E Sx 4252 ” Geets of Hemant Kumar.”
In the 1940s, Kamal Dasgupta was a star composer. He had many firsts to his name. He was the most educated man across the industry in those days. He came to the rescue of singers who were trying to break into the music world. He gave music in the most successful films of the 40s. The sale of his private records touched an all-time high. Yet the man behind many unforgettable melodies has been forgotten.
Kamal was born on July 28, 1912, in Kalia village in the district of Jasore, then in British India (now in Bangladesh). He was initiated into music by his father Prashanna Dasgupta. He later learnt it from his brother Bimal Dasgupta. Afterwards, he became a disciple of the legendary Dilip Kumar Roy and Ustad Zamiruddin Khan. He did his matriculation from Calcutta Academy. Later, he completed his B Com from Komila Victoria Collage. He joined Banaras Hindu University (BHU) for his masters. He earned his PhD from BHU for his work on Mirabai’s bhajaans and music.
Kamal Dasgupta was a versatile musical genius. He used to sing modern songs in Bangala, Hindi, Urdu and Tamil. He was a brilliant composer who composed around 8,000 songs. His first composition was recorded in 1932 in the voice of Satyaboti, (she seems to be the mother of actress Leela Desai). His composition was classical based and folk music. Later he tended to lean towards Thumri style and Naats. In 1935, Kamal Dasgupta joined the Gramophone Company of India in Calcutta as a music director. During this stint, he developed a close and lasting association with the poet Nazrul Islam. They became fond of each other and the relationship lasted for eleven years (1934-45). The culmination of their friendship were 400 songs – inspired by the works of the poet.
Calcutta was the major hub of Indian films produced in the 1930s. New Theatres and Madan Pictures were the main studios along with the other companies. After earning a name with his compositions, Kamal tried his luck in films. His first picture was Pandit Moshai (1936) in Bangla which was followed by Sarbjanin, Vivahotsab and Devyani between 1936-1942. The legendary actor, director Prathmesh Chandra Barua was impressed by his music and gave him a break in Jawaab in 1942. PC Barua directed both the version in Hindi and Bangla. The film was an instant hit. It had cult numbers like Toofan mail ye duniya toofan mail, Ae chand chhup na jana and Kuchh yaad na rahe.
Kamal Dasgupta’s next film was MP productions social, Hospital, starring Kanan Devi, Ahindra Choudhary and Heeralal. The very same year he did another Barua Production, Ranee. The cast included J Ganguly, Kalawati, PC Barua and Jamuna. Like his earlier films, his music became popular. Kamal Dasgupta was as successful in films as he was in his private recording career.
In 1944, he moved to Bombay and did the film Meghdoot (1945), based on the Sanskrit poet Kalidas. Leela Desai and Sahu Modak were in the lead. The film was directed by the legendary Debki Kumar Bose. During his stay in Bombay, he did several films across different genres. His next film was Arabian Nights, directed by Niren Lahari. The cast included Kanan Devi, Nawab and Robin Majumdar. All the numbers of the film became very popular. The same year, he did a social film Bindiya, starring Ragini, Amar, M Shakeer and E Billimoriya. The film was directed by CM Luhar. Kamal Das Gupta used the voices of Anima Dasgupta, Kalyani Das, Hemant Kumar and Amar. His next film was the mythological Krishna Leela (1946) which was directed by Debki Kumar Bose and had Kanan Devi and Paresh Banerjee in the lead. 1946 was the busiest year for Kamal Das Gupta. He did Zameen Asmaan for director Dwarka Khosla, starring Ranjana, Jeevan and Kusum Deshpande.
Coming back to Calcutta, he did Faisala (1947) followed by Manmani. The film had Ragini and Jairaj in the lead. The film was directed by Sarvottam Badami. His last film with his mentor PC Barua was Iran Ki Ek Raat (1949) – a costume drama, starring Jamuna, Narang, Chandrakant and Chandrawati. Its melodious number were: Ulfat mein jise banaya tha, Chhalke chhalke sarabein jawani ke palaye, Kaun hai teer andaaj bada, Ae dil kya and Khel hai ye zindagi. His last release was Phulwari in 1951. He had 40 films to his credit. He gave music to 17 Hindi films. His first film was Jawab-42 and the last Hindi film was Phulwari-51. He had also sung 1 song in Hindi in film Jawab-42.
Following this, the maverick composer got completely disillusioned by the film industry and recording companies. His favourite songs which were sold in the lakhs didn’t carry his name on the jackets. At the age of 44, he married his favourite singer, Firoza Begum and embraced Islam. Kamal Dasgupta, by now, became Kareemuddin Ahmed. He kept on doing movies whenever an offer came. His last film in Bangla was Bodhu Baran in 1967.
He shifted to Dhaka. When Bangladesh became independent, he became a citizen in 1972. The composer was a man of taste. He owned a Buick, a rare thing in Calcutta in the 1950s. He was a great human being. He fed hundreds of people during the Bengal famine. He was also extremely fond of cricket. He was blessed with three sons – Shafin Ahmed, Hamin Ahmed and Tahsin Ahmed. They followed their father in music and cricket. Two brothers played cricket at the state level and Hamin Ahmed was selected for the national team of Bangladesh. Kamal Das Gupta with his failing health and lack of proper medical treatment succumbed to his ailments and passed away in Dhaka on July 28, 1974, at the age of 62.
With all his work in film line, his name will be remembered forever, for making the Geet form of songs in Hindi and Bangla, popular in India. His pioneering contribution to promoting the Non Film Songs, is beyond words. Music lovers throughout the country are indebted to him for this work. Poet Lyricist Faiyaz Hashmi and composer Kamal Dasgupta were regularly churning out wonderful melodies on 78 RPM every month and listeners all over India were enjoying them fully. Surprisingly, while Kamal’s name was written correct, Hashmi was credited in several ways like F Hashmi, F. Hashmi, Faiaz Hashmi, Faiaz Hashumi, Faiyaz Hashmi, Faiyyaz Hashami, Falyyaz Hashmi, Fayyaz Hashimi etc.
Actually,in 1985,Jagmohan Sursagar wrote in his Autobiography…..
” In the initial stages Kamal Dasgupta was influenced by Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore’s songs and compositions(Rabindra sangeet) were extremely popular, but were limited to Bangla people only. Ghazal, qawwali, Dadra, Naat, Thumri, Hori, Kajari etc used to come to market but had a very limited listenership. These never reached the top.
” The fusion of Ghazal,Dadra and Qawali with Bangla Geet style gave birth to Hindi Non Film Songs or geets. As such Geet had a known and accepted place in Literature, but not in Music. To establish this new Genre, Kamal babu used lyrics by Pt.Madhur, Pt. Anjum and Faiyaz Hashmi, got them sung by Jagmohan, Hemant, Talat, Juthika etc. Their records were inscribed with ‘ Hindi Geet (Hindustani Song) ‘. What thus started as NFS Geet from 1936 continued upto next 20 years non stop. “
(adapted, with thanks, from an article by Sharad Dutt, in milleniumpost.in, ‘Yaad kiya Dil ne’ by Subhash Chandra Jadhav and my notes.)
Today’s song is a lovely NFS. I am sure you will love it too.

I would prefer to stop counting the numbers, and rather go by the impressions in the memory. Well, it sounds so unbelievable that Nitin Mukesh turns 70 today. It seems like just a little while ago that we heard him sing for the first time in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970). It was actually an unlisted song, in English. A song of good wishes and greetings – “Wish Me Luck”.
Then in 1981, when the song “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi” from the film ‘Kranti’ was doing the rounds of popularity, my first impression on hearing this voice was – how come, was this song recorded earlier? The voice sounds so close to the voice of Mukesh, his father. Well yes, the voice is distinct, if one is listening carefully. But it also has an unmistakable shade of Mukesh’s voice.
Nitin Mukesh was born this day in 1950. Although he made his singing debut in 1970, his songs are few and far between in that first decade of his career. His more active years were the 1980s and 1990s. And even so, one cannot count his career as being prolific.
Today’s song is from the 1981 film ‘Nakhuda’. It was a big banner film of its time, produced by Yash Chopra for Yash Raj Films. The film is directed by Dilip Naik. The star cast for the film is Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Swaroop Sampat, Raj Kiran, Madan Puri, Javed Khan, Vikas Anand, Sudhir Dalvi, Bharat Kapoor, Madhu Malhothra, Mac Mohan, Yunus Parvez, Asha Sachdev, Jagdish Raj, Mahaan, Murlidhar, Bandini, Nandini, Umesh, Murari, Chand, Raj Verma, Chandu, Pardesi, Amarnath, Rajesh, and Rauf Khan.
The film has 6 songs. One song is a composition by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and also sung by him. The remaining 5 songs are from the pen of Nida Fazli, and have been tuned to music by Khayyaam. One song of this film is already showcased on our blog. This is the second song of this film to make its appearance here today. Lyrics for this song have been sent in by our dear Avinash ji.
On screen, the song is picturized on Raj Kiran and Swaroop Sampat. As the words indicate, this is an ‘expectant parents’ song, with the characters expressing happiness and love for each other, with the knowledge that another member of the family is on way.
Wishing Nitin Mukesh, a very happy birthday, and also many many more years of good health and active singing. All the best wishes to him.

Hullo Atuldom
27th June- birth anniversary of our beloved Panchamda a.k.a RD Burman. We have many posts on this blog which gives us details of his birth, his lineage, and many many other trivia connected with how he got the nickname “Pancham”.
So without wasting time or as some people would like to say ‘zyaada footage khaaye bagair’ I will come straight to today’s song. It is from the 1989 released, Vidhu Vinod Chopra written-produced & directed “Parinda”. It had Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, and Nana Patekar in a rather grey role. Anupam Kher was there in a special appearance.
Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff played brothers. Anupam Kher played Anil Kapoor’s friend and Madhuri’s brother. Jackie Shroff works for the underworld chieftain Anna (Nana Patekar). Anil Kapoor returns from studying abroad and meets his childhood friend Anupam Kher who has become a police officer. He also witnesses his friend being shot down by the underworld and decides to avenge his death.
The movie is interspersed with the tender love and camaraderie that is shared between the brothers and their dreams of having a family complete with wife children etc. Today’s song is when the brothers are thinking of the impending marriage of Anil Kapoor with Madhuri.
“Parinda” had seven songs which were written by Khurshid Hallauri of which one is there on the blog, posted on 15th of May 2015. (It has a sad version which was posted in the comments by Prakashchandraji) There was also a comment there by Prakashchandraji:- “And Who is Khursheed Hallauri ??, the lyricist, Any one who has information about him, Please share with us.” This question still remains.
This movie was planned by Vinod Chopra after his low-budget suspense thriller “Khamosh” failed to find a distributor for theatrical release. “Parinda” received critical acclaim when released. It also won two National awards and five Filmfare awards. It was also selected to represent India at the Oscars that year.
I chose this particular song as it talks of a marriage and we have an active follower of this blog celebrating his anniversary today. He is a big fan of Pancham and his music so I hope he and his life-partner (also known as Satulite in Atuldom) like this song.
Thank You Panchamda for leaving us this fun song.

Lyrics
sehre mein dulha hoga,
ghoonghat mein dulhan hogi
haan sehre mein dulha hoga,
ghoongat mein dulhan hogi
masti mein naachenge yaar
ke ghar mein baaja bajega
sehre mein dulha hoga
ghoongat mein dulhan hogi
sehre mein dulha hoga,
ghoonghat mein dulhan hogi
masti mein naachenge yaar
ke ghar mein baaja bajega
ho o aayega jab din woh khushi ka
hosh rahega kisko kisika
hoo ghar aayegi bhaiyya ki dulhan
jhoom uthhega yeh ghar aangan
hey raat suhaani hogi,
chadhhti jawaani hogi
duniya deewaani hogi,
saath me rani hogi
karke sola singaar
ke ghar me baaja bajega
haan sehre mein dulha hoga,
ghoongat mein dulhan hogi
sehre mein dulha hoga,
he ghoongat mein dulhan hogi
masti mein naachenge yaar
ke ghar me baja bajega
poore honge armaan dil ke
honge khush dulhan se mil ke
pyaar se hongi pyaari baatein,
katt jaayengi pal mein raatein
haan saanson mein hogi jwaala
chaabhi hogi na hoga taala
saali hogi na saala,
saala hoga na saali
aaya hai tere dar pe sawaali
shirdiwaale sai baba
shirdiwaale sai baba
aaya hai tere dar pe sawaali
no no no bhaiyya
sawaali nahin saali saali
saali hogi na saala,
chaabi hoga na taala
saali hogi na saala,
chaabi hoga na taala
donon karenge pyaar
ke ghar mein baaja bajega
haan sehre mein dulha hoga,
ghoonghat mein dulhan hogi
sehre mein dulha hoga,
ghoonghat mein dulhan hogi
masti mein naachenge yaar
ke ghar mein baaja bajega
armaanon ki bagiya khilegi,
bhaiyya ko mere dulhan milegi
o o behne lagegi prem ki dhaara
paawan hoga jeewan saara
hoga jo poora saal
godi mein hoga laal
hoga jo poora saal
godi mein hoga laal
haan duniya dekhegi mera kamaal
ho chhorra ganga kinaare waalaa
ho chhorra ganga kinaare waalaa
o khaike paan banaaras waalaa
khuli jaaye band akal kaa taalaa
phir to aisa kare kamaal
seedhi karde sabki chaal
arre arre arre

saal saal

godi mein hoga laal
hoga jo poora saal
godi mein hoga laal
chhota sukhi parivaar

sehre mein dulha hoga
ghoonghat mein dulhan hogi
sehre mein dulha hoga
ghoonghat mein dulhan hogi
masti mein naachenge yaar
ke ghar mein baaja bajega
haan baaja bajega
ha ha
arre baaja bajega

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 92 # R.D. Burman – Year 1977
———————————————–———————————————
It is another important day today for all of us today (27 june 2020). Remembering the ‘genius’ Music Director Rahul Dev Burman – ‘Pancham’ on his eighty-first birth anniversary today.
As a tribute to him I am presenting a song composed by him from the movie ‘Jeewan Mukt-1977’.
I do not know how many of our readers are aware of this movie and its’ songs. There may be many, and surely most Pancham fans are aware of the movie and its songs.
However, I became aware of this movie only six years ago when I got my copy of HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). Since then, I was longing to share the songs from this movie. But somehow it didn’t work out, mainly because I was unable to locate the songs of this movie.
I had never listened to the songs of this movie earlier. For that matter I had never even heard the name of this movie. This movie must have sunk badly at the box office and as a result it must have ended up becoming an obscure movie of its time.
The movie had some beautiful songs in it that were created by none other than the genius music director Rahul Dev Burman.
When I listened to the songs of this movie during the preparation of this post, I liked them very much. And I hope that our readers too will find the song enjoyable.
This is a movie of 1977. 1977 is also an important year in the history of India (socio-politically). However here on the blog we will only discuss the movies and music (of Pancham) of that year.
Some of us will readily recall the blockbuster musical hit of that year i.e. ‘Ham Kisise Kam Nahin’, which also had music by R D Burman.
Then there were other movies like ‘Kinaara’, ‘Mukti’, ‘Kitaab’, ‘Karm’ etc where the music was composed by R.D. Burman.
Then there were movies like ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Dharam Veer’, ‘Aap Ki Khaatir’, ‘Yehi Hai Zindagi’, ‘Doosra Aadmi’, ‘Apnaapan’, ‘Dulhan Wahi Jo Piyaa Man Bhaaye’, ‘Khoon Pasinaa’, ‘Swami’, ‘Anurodh’, etc etc… where the other music directors composed the music and the music of these movies too were very popular.
The song that ranked at number one of that year’s annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list was from the previous years’ ‘Laila Majnu’, and in 1978 it was from ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se’. The song ‘Kyaa huaa tera waadaa’ from ‘Ham Kisise Kam Nahin’ ranked at number three in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of 1978.
None of the songs from today’s movie ‘Jeewan Mukt’ featured in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala-1977’. (or 1978).
In 1977 there were as many as ten movies where R D Burman sas the music director. Details of the representation of these movies in the blog is show here :-

‘Jeewan Mukt-1977’ was directed by Sudhendu Roy for S.R. Productions, Bombay. It had Lakshmi, Parikshit Sahni, Girish Karnad, Mala Jaggi, Sudha Shivpuri, Pawan Dutt, Meena Rai, Master Gautam, Ashok Razdan, Dhanna, Asha Lata, Suresh Oberoi, Dinshaw Dazi, Shrimati Mistri and others.
As per HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) this movie had total four songs, all were solo songs sung by Asha Bhonsle. (however, on internet I came across a song sung by Kishore Kumar and it is uploaded as an ‘unreleased song from this movie- ‘Jeewan Mukt’, which needs to be checked and confirmed. HFGK doesn’t mention this song).
Lyricist Yogesh wrote the songs for this movie and music was composed by R.D. Burman.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.08.1977.
Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is lip synced on screen by Lakshmi. Master Gautam (I guess) is the kid seen with her. Some other artists including two playing a village cuple are also seen in the picturisation.
Let us enjoy today’s song which is said to be inspired from a ‘western song’ (guesses?).
The book ‘R.D. Burman- The Man, The Music’ also mentions one other song from this movie ‘Jeewan Mukt’ where Pancham Da had taken inspiration from the music composed by a famous ‘western group’, but then that is the ‘inspiration’ for another post. Till then let us all enjoy this song and pay our tributes to our beloved Pancham Da.
With this song ‘Jeewan Mukt-1977’ makes its debut on the blog. With this song, all released movies of 1977 that had music by R D Burman find representation on the blog. 🙂

Song-Lehra ke dagar chali jaati hai kidhar (Jeewan Mukt)(1977) singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Yogesh, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics (Based on Video link)
lehraa ke dagar
chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhen hai khabar
lehraa ke dagar
chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhen hai khabar
door kahin pe
sone ki zameen pe
pyaara pyaara hai
bahaaron ka nagar
lehraa ke dagar chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhen hai khabar
aa aa aa aa aa
ye khiley khiley
manchale saje
mausam ki qasam
rukte nahin kahin mere qadam
ye khiley khiley
manchale saje
mausam ki qasam
rukte nahin kahin mere qadam
lagtaa hai man ko
jaise gagan ko
pankh binaa main
chhoo rahin hoon ud kar
lehraa ke dagar
chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhen hai khabar
lehraa ke dagar
chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhen hai khabar
aa aa aa aa
yahaan kiran kiran
jab chaman chaman ko chhoo le ae
dil mera sab kuchh bhoole ae
yahaan kiran kiran
jab chaman chaman ko chhoo le ae
dil mera sab kuchh bhoole ae
lachke jo daali koi phoolonwaali
ho jaaye mujh par jaadu ka asar
lehraa ke dagar
chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhen hai khabar
lehraa ke dagar
chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhe hai khabar
jab dheere dheere nadiyaa ke teere ae
din jo dhale ae
mehendi rachaa kar shaam chale ae
jab dheere dheere nadiyaa ke teere ae
din jo dhale ae
mehendi rachaa kar shaam chale ae
dhake dabe paaon se
rangon bhare gaaon se
aayi ho rangeeli koyi gori saj kar
lehraa ke dagar
chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhen hai khabar
door kahin pe
sone ki zameen pe
pyaara pyaara hai
bahaaron ka nagar
lehraa ke dagar
chali jaati hai kidhar
kuchh tumko pataa hai
kuchh tumhen hai khabar
laa laa laa aa
laa ra la la la laa
la la la la laa laa
laa laa laa laa aa
laa laa laa laa

Hindi Songs in Bangla Film – 32
———————————-
The folk singer I am discussing here is from Assam. She has no direct or indirect connection to the soils of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. Yet her fans from these states has given her the title of ‘Bhojpuri Queen’. It is not that she has consciously chosen to sing in Bhojpuri. The fact is that it is one of the music recording companies who made her to sing Bhojpuri songs. Again, the title ‘Bhojpuri Queen’ to her would give an impression that she has restricted her singing mainly to Bhojpuri songs. But it is not so. She has been in her professional music scene since 2001 rendering nearly 9000 songs in 30 different languages/dialects of India. She has also done the playback singing in Hindi, Bhojpuri, Bangla, Assamese, Tamil and Marathi films, beside acting in some films. She is a folk musicologist and has done extensive research on the history of folk music especially in the Bhojpuri region.
I am referring to Kalpana Patowary (b. 27/10/1978) who has been endowed with a rich and powerful voice capable of singing in high octaves with ease. She was born in Sorbhog town in Barpeta district of Assam. Her father, Bipin Patowary, a folk singer himself and working for AIR (Aakashvani), Guwahati, gave Kalpana the initial training in Kamrupiya and Gaolporiya folk singing of Assam. She also learnt Baul singing from Naren Das. After completing her graduation in English literature from Cotton College, Guwahati, Kalpana enrolled in Bhatkhande College of Music, Lucknow from where she completed her Sangeet Visharad.
Even though Kalpana Patowary has been performing on the stage since her childhood, her professional music journey started in 2001 when after marrying Pervez Khan, her school-mate and neighbour in Assam, she shifted to Mumbai. She learnt Hindustani classical music from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan of Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana in Mumbai. The first music album recorded by Kalpana Patowary was in 2001 which was a remix of popular Hindi songs. Her first Bhojpuri song album “Na Hum Se Bhangiya Pisaai’ae Ganesh Ke Papa” released in 2002 made her very popular among the Bhojpuri speaking population. With this popularity, she sang for the first time in a Bhojpuri film, ‘Sasura Bada Paisewala’ (2004) after which she became a regular playback singer of Bhojpuri films. She expanded her command over Bhojpuri songs by singing non-film folk songs in Puria, Pachra, Kajri, Birha, Sohar, Chaita and Nautanki genres. She traveled extensively in Bhojpuri speaking regions to study the folklore of the region. She was the first woman singer to sing and record a Chhapraihiya Purvi folk style song which was hitherto a male preserve.
In June 2012, Kalpana Patowary launched her music cum documentary album ‘The Legacy of Bhikari Thakur’ which was released by a British recording company, Virgin EMI Records. It received popularity all over the world, especially from in those countries having a sizeable Bhojpuri speaking population. It was a sort of Kalpana Patowary’s tribute to Bhikari Thakur who is regarded as ‘Shakespeare of Bhojpuri literature’. In addition, she also recorded documentary musical albums like ‘The Sacred Scriptures of Monikut’ and ‘Anthology of Birha’. She is the first singer to sings a Khadi Birha folk song for Coke Studio.
Kalpana Patowary as a playback singer in Bhojpuri films has faced criticism from some quarters for popularising Bhojpuri film songs with raunchy lyrics. She has defended herself by saying that in the initial period of her career in Bhojpuri film music, she was not well-versed with Bhojpuri dialect and the meanings. Also, she has pointed out that it is the writers of the songs who have to take care of the raunchy wordings. Also, she says that if the song was obscene than how did the Censor Board not take objection?
One of the effects of such criticism on Kalpana Patowary seems to be that she has become more determined to study the folklore of Bhojpuri region and popularise such folk songs not only all over India but also all over the world. Hence, during the last five years or so, she has been devoting much of her time in folklores of not only the Bhojpuri region but also of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and North-Eastern States. She has also started her focus on devotional songs of these states.
It is in this background that Kalpana Patowary seems to have lapped up an opportunity by singing a devotional song “Chain Kahaan Prabhu Bin Manwa” in the film ‘Har Har Byomkesh’ (2015) which is picturised on herself. The song is written by Sutapa Basu which is set to music by Bickram Ghosh. The song in the video clip is partial as picturised in the film. The audio clip has got the full song.
The details of the film and the story have been given in my earlier article on the song – “Roothe Sajan Kaise Manaawe Ho Rama“.
