Hullo Atuldom
There are so many possible songs to go with today’s post. Songs that will do justice to the personality and versatile talent of the concerned celebrity.
He was an actor born with acting in his genes. He was not a star-kid but a star-heir, facing the camera for the first time when he was barely 2 or 3 years old. He was seen next as an adolescent playing his father’s Bachpan. All that I have written are well known facts about this actor, who in later years turned a producer-director much like his father. Along with his brothers he tried to keep the studio and banner, set up by his showman father, aloft till 2017 when the iconic property in Mumbai’s Chembur area caught fire and collapsed during the shoot of a television reality show. The brothers then decided to pull down the shutters on a piece of history of Indian cinema.
Regular movie-buffs will know that I am speaking of Raj Kapoor’s sons- Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv and the RK Films and RK Studios. The last movie that came from this banner was “Aa Ab Laut Chalen” (1999) which was directed by Rishi Kapoor. Before that “Prem Granth” (1996) which was directed by Rajiv Kapoor and “Henna” (1991) directed by Randhir Kapoor were the offerings from RK Films both of which had Rishi Kapoor playing the central character.
As I mentioned above Rishi Kapoor had acting in his genes with all the males (before him) from his family, being in the entertainment industry -Prithviraj Kapoor (grandfather), Raj Kapoor (father) Shammi Kapoor & Shashi Kapoor (uncles). Chintu (as Rishi Kapoor used to be addressed fondly) had shared screen space with his uncles and has been directed by his father in a few movies. I doubt if has appeared in any movie with his niece- Karisma and Kareena; but he has acted with his son Ranbir which was incidentally his wife Neetu’s comeback to movies, after she quit the limelight for family life.
The last movie that he faced the camera for, post his return from USA after undergoing treatment for the dreaded C, released on an OTT channel on 31st March 2022. I happened to see this for the love of Chintu and I must say ‘I was not disappointed’.
Chintu was one actor who had always emoted well and things were not any different in “Sharmaji Namkeen”. The unique thing about the film was the way they had two actors play a single character. Maybe a first in Indian movies. Actually, there was about four days shoot left, of the movie, at the time of Chintu’s passing. Paresh Rawal stepped in and the movie was completed. The makers didn’t re-shoot the parts which Chintu had completed. Instead, the transition in the scenes with the two actors was kept seamless and they didn’t try to get a single person to dub for the two actors (both actors spoke in their own voice). I would love to see the movie all over again just to enjoy the smooth handling of the movie. It had all the trademark stuff that fans of Chintu loved him for including the sweaters and mufflers that he was famous for.
Much as I would like to share a song from “Sharmaji Namkeen” in this post I am settling for one of his popular numbers from the ’70s. (Link to Sharmaji songs is not yet available on Youtube).
Today’s song may well be one of those categorized as “How come this song was not posted earlier?”. It features Chintu with Neetu Singh and is written by Gulshan Bawra. Kalyanji Anandji are the music directors of this song that is sung by Shailendra Singh and Asha Bhonsle.
This movie, “Rafoo Chakkar” (1975), was directed by Narinder Bedi and produced by House of Nadiadwalas. It had Faryal, Asrani, Paintal, Rajindernath, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Shetty, Kamran, etc in addition to the lead pair of Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor. It had six songs of which the blog has the following four.

kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai
kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai

ho raha hai jo dil mein ho jaane do sanam
ho raha hai jo dil mein ho jaane do sanam
baat dil ki dil mein rah jaaye to phir kya hota hai
baat dil ki dil mein rah jaaye to phir kya hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoo e khuda hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
kya manzoor hai khuda ko baataao to zara
kya manzoor hai khuda ko bataao to zara
jaan jaaogi, baahon mein aa jaao to zara
jaan jaaogi, baahon mein aa jaao to zara
koi jo baahon mein aa jaaye to phir kya hota hai
koi jo baahon mein aa jaaye to phir kya hota hai

In-spite of composing good music and giving some timeless classics in some of the above movies, none of the song from the above movies appeared in the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala’ that year of 1984.
Songs of ‘Hero-1983’, ‘Sharaabi-1984’ and ‘Tohfa-1984’ ruled the roost by securing number 1,2 and 3 respectively. Another song of ‘Tohfa-1984’ was on number four.
If I am asked to select the best of Pancham that year the album “Duniya-1984” certainly was the topper for me. It had a varied range of songs composed by Pancham – the foot tapping ‘tu chaand nagar ki shehzaadi’, taking you far from world ‘gehre halke, halke gehre’, the philosophical ‘phirte hain kab se dar-badar’, the entertaining ‘duniya bahut hi kamaal hai’, the party song ‘jhoomti raat jawaan’ and lovely one ‘teri meri zindagi pyaar bhari zindagi’. The lyrics of all the songs by Javed Akhtar were all magical.
The movie ‘Sunny’ (aur kya ahd e wafaa hote hain etc), ‘Zameen Aasmaan’, ‘Aawaaz’, ‘Ham Hain Laajawaab’, ‘Jhoothha Sach’ also have some good compositions by Pancham. But the albums mostly heard and were a run-away hits were songs from ‘Jawaani’ and ‘Manzil Manzil’. However, none of them made it to the ‘Binaca Geetmala annual list of 1984’.
Today we are going to listen to a song from the movie ‘Manzil-Manzil’. This song is picturised on Dimple Kapdadia and Sunny Deol who are lip-syncing for the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh respectively.
This song has two parts, the first one is the duet, and second part is in the voice of Shailendra Singh which is the ‘third stanza’ of the duet repeated in slower version. This song stood at sixth rank in the ‘annual Binaca Geetmala of 1985’.
One song of ‘Manzil Manzil’ stood at rank twenty-three while one song from ‘Jawaani-1984’ ranked at number eleven and one song from the movie ‘Jhoothha Sach-1984’ appeared on in the annual list of Binaca Geetmala of 1985.
Let us have a look on the details of today’s movie now.
“Manzil Manzil” was directed by Nasir Hussain for his home productions ‘Nasir Hussain Films, Bombay’. Nasir Hussain was also the producer of this movie, and he wrote dialogues of this movie too.
This movie had Dimple Kapadia, Sunny Deol, Prem Chopra, Danny Dengzongpa, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Tariq, T.P. Jain, Rinku Jaiswal, Sajida, Surendra Pal, Raj Bibra, Abid Sayyad, V. Malhotra, Ahmed Khan, Moijuddin, Meghdoot, D.S. Rana, K.K. Raj, Ramesh Goyal, Naveen Kumar, Dolly Jena, Anuradha, Leena Das, Jazbel, Nihal Khan, Hemendra Sinha, Deval Raiji and others.
Actor Feroz made his debut in this movie.
Asha Parekh and Ravindra Kapoor make friendly appearance sin this movie.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 26.09.1984.

Hullo Atuldom
“Saagar” (1985) was produced by G P Sippy and directed by Ramesh Sippy. Its story, screenplay and lyrics were written by Jawed Akhtar and RD Burman was music director. The movie had 7 songs of which the blog has 5 but in my opinion we have covered six songs as the sad version of ‘saagar kinaare dil ye pukaare’ is found in the comments of post; which means that with today’s post “Saagar” will be YYIIPPEEEED!!!
Song | Date of post |
---|---|
Maria o Maria | 3 September 2008 |
Saagar kinaare dil ye pukaare | 29 November 2008 |
Yoonhi gaate raho | 9 August 2013 |
Ho chehra hai ya chaand khila hai | 17 June 2018 |
Sach mere yaar hai | 7 November 2020 |
We can see “Saagar” made its debut in 2008 ( 2 songs) then the next one came 5 years later. The movie waited for another 5 years when Atulji posted ‘chehra hai ya chaand khila hai’ and then we had a song last November.
“Saagar” was a star-studded movie (a term which was very commonly used in those times) with Dimple Kapadia (who was making a return to films), Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Saeed Jaffrey, Nadira, Madhur Jaffrey, Kiran Vairale, Shafi Inaamdar, Satish Kaushik, A K Hangal etc. Kishore Kumar, S P Balasubrahmanyam, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh. ‘Chehra hai ya chaand khila hai’ got Kishore Kumar his 8th Filmfare award. It was a film that was sent as an entry to the Academy Awards in the Foreign Language category. Interestingly, Kamal Haasan was nominated under the Best Actor and Best Actor supporting categories in the Filmfare awards of that year. He won it in the Best Actor category, his only award in Hindi films. Before that, in 1968, Ashok Kumar was nominated in two categories for ‘Aashirwad’. The movie had a very simple story of two friends falling in love with the same girl with an economic classes clash thrown in for good measure.
I had lots of songs to choose from for today’s post to wish Dimple Kapadia on her 64th birthday. This song from ‘Saagar’ gives us a glimpse of how beautiful Dimple is/was. How gorgeous her hair is/was. How elegant she is/was. Though she had signed ‘Saagar’ first other movies like ‘Zakhmi Sher’, ‘Lava’, ‘Manzil Manzil’ etc released first. She has since been seen in many movies where her characters have showed emotions, drama, action etc.
It was not easy writing out the lyrics to this song. There are so many different styles of breathing intonation, I didn’t know if the sound ‘ssh’ with which the song begins is a word or the character catching her breath when the hero touching her. But all-in-all a very romantic song and there is a beautiful play of lights reflecting off the waters of the pool.
Happy Birthday Dimple. may you have many more…

Hullo to all Atulites
March 13th is the death anniversary of Nasir Hussain. He who gave us some memorable films like Anarakali, Munimji , Paying Guest, Caravan , Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon , Tumsa Nahin Dekha , Teesri Manzil, Dil Deke Dekhon, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hain etc. And then in my growing up years there were movies like Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hain, Manzil Manzil, Zabardast etc. Then he switched to being a producer for films that his son Mansoor Khan directed.

Today 21st October is the birthday of the dancing diva HELEN. And it is not possible to let it pass by without a song to show our love for her.
But that is the most difficult task for us atulites. Why? Because we have covered so many of her famous songs that one has to sit down with pen and paper to make a list of those songs that are left. In that respect I envy the various radio channels and TV programmes which will show the same set of songs on every occasion. I suspect that they don’t know the existence of the lesser known songs.

In my last post on the song from “Zehreela Insaan” (1974), I gave a short synopsis of the movie. This song, filmed on Rishi Kapoor and Moushumi Chatterjee, shows them in happier times. Since they are playing college students here, they have most probably bunked classes to meet and sing a song. This seems to be a popular haunt with the main protagonist of the film. Three songs of the film are shot here.
