“Mumtaz Mahal” (1957) was directed by Ram Daryani for Nigam Films. The movie had Jairaj, Sheela Ramani, Veena, Agha, Umesh, Nazir Kashmiri, GM Durrani, Heera Sawant, Samson, Uma Dutt, Minnie etc in it.

HFGK mentions one song twice and that gives a figure of seven songs for this movie. In reality the movie has only six songs. Five of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here are the details of the songs covered earlier :

A perusal of the details of the songs covered earlier reveals some interesting facts. The first song from the movie was covered on 15 april 2014 and the fifth song from the movie was covered on 19 july 2014, the day of blog’s sixth anniversary when the countdown to the 10kth song in the blog was in its full flow.

All the five songs from “Mumtaz Mahal”(1956) were covered in 2014 and that left only one more song to be covered. Why we did not cover the sixth and final song in that year itself ?

Well, there are many reasons. One reason is that the idea of covering all songs of movies had not yet caught up in the blog by then. Secondly, those days we covered songs as we came across them. Only five songs from the movie were available and they were all covered. In any case, I was no aware about the number of songs that this movie (or for that matter any movie) contained since I did not have access to HFGK till then.

I became a proud possessor of HFGK a few days after the 10kth song in the blog thanks to the generosity of Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh and Sudhir Ji, who gifted me all the five volumes of HFGK on the occasion of this momentous occasion.

Now a days I specifically maintain a list of movies that have only one or two songs left to be covered (by looking up in the HFGK). I keep search for the missing songs. That way I always have a list of YIPPIable movies to chose from.

Coming to “Mumtaz Mahal”(1957), I was under the impression that that two songs from the movie were left to be covered. As mentioned above,, I realised that one of these songs was already covered in the blog (being a duplicate entry), so only one song from the movie remained to be covered.

This missing song, unsurprisingly, was a rare song. Listening to the song made me realise that it is even more rare. For once, it is a solo song sung by Balbir. Now, Balbir has an many as 41 songs in the blog but only one of these songs is a solo song.

I thought that I should cover this song on the occasion of Balbir’s anniversary. When I checked up, I found that hardly any details are available online. I realised that the most comprehensive detail on Balbir is available in this blopg itself, and is in the writeup on the Balbir solo song that was covered in the blog on 19 july 2014 !

That article was written by Sudhir Ji, and there he had mentioned that Balbir was born in 1926 in Amritsar. That article mentions that Balbir sang in around 120 movies in a career spanning four decades (from 1940s till 1970s), but only about a dozen or so of them are solo songs.

The exact day of Balbir’s birth anniversary is not known. In fact, the exact date of his death is not known either. On searching online, I read in an news item that he was murdered by his relatives sometime in 1970s. So sad.

With no date to go by, there is little point holding this rare song back. So here is the sixth and final song from “Mumtaz Mahal”(1957), four years after the other five songs from the movie were covered in the blog.

This song is sung by S Balbir. Pt Priyadarshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Vinod.

I have not been able to get a few words right in the song. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections as applicable.

With this song, “Mumtaz Mahal”(1957) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-So raha jahaan hai (Mumtaz Mahal)(1957) Singer-Balbir, Lyrics-Pt Priyadarshi, MD-Vinod

Lyrics

so raha jahaan hai
jaagti jawaaniyaan
so raha jahaan hai
jaagti jawaaniyaan
dil mein rehne waale sun
dil mein rehne waale sun
dard bhari kahaaniyaan
so raha jahaan hai

baadalon ki god mein
chaand muskura raha
ishq jhoom jhoom aaj
ishq jhoom jhoom aaj
husn ko bula raha aa
dekh lo chakor ko
de raha qurbaaniyaan aan
dil mein rehne waale sun
dard bhari kahaaniyaan
so raha jahaan hai

dolte armaan hain
dhadkanen machal raheen
baar baar har ghadi
baar baar har ghadi
saans thhandi chal rahi ee
pyaase honth maangte
pyaar ki nishaaniyaan
dil mein rehne waale sun
dil mein rehne waale sun
dard bhari kahaaniyaan
so raha jahaan hai

Friends, we are on the grandstand day today, now slowly moving towards the coveted 10K target which will be reached later in the day today. In the interim past few days, the pace has somewhat been slow, since Atul ji himself has been traveling on work for some of the days in the past two weeks. In fact he is in travel even today, and his posts are now coming from Nagpur.
