“Mohabbat Zindagi hai”(1966) was produced by K C Gulati and directed by Jagdish Nirula for Roop Chhaaya, Bombay. The movie had Dharmendra, Rajshree, Mehmood, Nazir Hussain, Chaand Usmani, Deven Verma, Badri Prasad, Sunder, Man Mohan, Madhavi, Supported by Kundan, Kesho(Keshav Rana), Parasram, Kirti aka Kirti Kumar,
Raj Dewan, Dinanath, Johnny Whiskey, Prabhuji, Neelam, Geetanjali, Thelma, Sujata, Neeta Sinha, Krishna Duggal, Sameena etc. The movie introduced Subhash, Kumar Anand, Mulkhi, Anita and Child Sweety Dutt as well.

“Mohabbat Zindagi hai”(1966) had eight songs in it. Six songs have been covered so far.

Here is the seventh song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi and female chorus. S H Bihari is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

The song is picturised on Mehmood, Madhavi, Sujata(the dancer)and Neelam. The picturisation shows Mehmood in a river singing this song for the three ladies also there on the river. The movie was picturised at Dhanbad Jharia Coal Mines (and also in studios of Kardar,Rajkamal,Roop tara,Modern). So one guesses that the river showm in the picturisation could be Damodar River that flows in that Coalmines area, or its tributory, the river Katri. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the matter.

The song is clearly part of comic side plot of the story. The song bears unmistakable resemblence with “Ye chaand sa raushan chehra” from “Kashmir Ki Kali”(1964) which was created by the same musical team.

Lyrics of the song and other details were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

This song is the 4000th song in the blog from the decade of 1960s (1961-1970).

Shamshad Begam sings for Mehmood 😊
——————————————

Today 23rd April’2021 is the eighth remembrance anniversary (14th April 1919 – 23rd April-2013) of yesteryears’ singer Shamshad Begam. One who Naushad always mentioned as ‘a perfect Hindustani voice’.

On this occasion here is a song from the 1971 movie ‘Johar Mehmood In Hong Kong’. I had watched this movie in my childhood with my Uncle and have mentioned it in my earlier post on the blog.

Few songs like ‘jalti hai duniya jalti rahe’, ‘aayo aayo nau-raatri tyohaar’ have always been in my memory since my childhood. Also, the today’s song is one special song which I have never forgotten because on screen it is performed by a ‘beautiful female artist’ (in disguise though 😊)
I often break up in humming this today’s song whenever I am in ‘ Mehmood – mood’ 😊.

It is surprising that today’s song has been missing from the ‘blog’ till now.

Let us have a brief about the movie, before we enjoy the today’s ‘entertaining song’ …

“Johar Mehmood in Hongkong” (1971) was produced by Madan Chopra and K.Z. Sheth. It was directed by S.A. Akbar and was presented by M.O. Bawazir for Mahesh Ashish. The movie had I.S. Johar, Mehmood, Sonia Sahni, Aruna Irani, Tiwari, Kamal Kapoor, Tuntun, Manorama, Madhumati, Haroon, and Pran. Agha, Mukri, Jr. Mehmood, Polson, Shaikh, B.B. Bhalla, Raj Kishore, Khairati, Murad appear as Guest Artistes in this movie.

This movie was written by I.S. Johar who also wrote the screenplay and dialogues for this movie. Vithal Bankar was the editor for this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 04.01.1971. And thus, this movie has already completed its FIFTY years since its release. I am sure many of us might have fond memories and nostalgia of watching this movie and might be remembering its songs too.

Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji who were assisted by Babla and where Parte was the arranger and Frank Fernand the Conductor.

There were Six songs in this movie penned by Qamar Jalalabadi (four songs) and two songs are jointly credited to Qamar Jalalabadi and Indeevar (as per HFGK).

Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Shamshad Begam, Manna Dey and Usha Timothi gave their voices to the songs in this movie. As per HFGK Lakshmi Shankar, Usha Khanna and Usha Mangeshkar’s voice has been in one song each, however their names are not mentioned in the titles of this movie (available on YT).

So far three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the third song from this movie to appear on the blog.

Today’s song is the fourth song of this movie to appear on the blog.

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Tumhaare dil ko ulfat ka Laxmi Shankar, Usha Timothy, chorus 29.12.2012
02 Nathaniyaa haale to badaa mazaa hoye Shamshad Begam Being discussed today
03 Jalti hai duniyaa jalti rahe Mukesh, Usha Khanna, chorus 30.06.2012
04 Ham to tere hai deewaane Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey
05 Laagaa laagaa jhulaniyaa ka dhakka Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar
06 Aayo aayo nau-raatri tyohaar Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Chorus 10.10.2018

Let us now enjoy today’s song which is performed on screen by Mehmood and we can also see I.S. Johar in the picturisation of the song. Watching this song one can easily guess what Mehmood (in female role) is trying to and what ‘her’ objective i. 😊

Hullo Atuldom

Some songs keep playing in our mind as if on loop. This I had said in one of my previous posts. Today’s song is one such.
I saw it consciously a number of times in the last few years. Consciously means I may have seen it in the ’70s or ’80s when these movies were aired on the doordarshan but I was not old enough to appreciate them or the meaning of their lyrics. But now on repeat viewing of the movie I am getting wiser. I had filed away (mentally) that this needs to be on the blog. So here it is.

“Sadhu Aur Shaitaan” a 1968 release had 4 songs all written by Rajinder Krishan and Laxmi-Pyare were the music directors. Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Manna Dey and Mohd. Rafi were the playback singers.

Only one song has been posted on the blog. That one had Mehmood replaying his “hum kale hain toh kya hua” character. We had Mehmood mouthing the initial part of “Chunia, ari kidhar hai ri tu? Mere dil ki rani. Mere nawaason ki naani. aa gaya hoon main. arre dekh le main aa gaya permission leko”.

Today’s song has him giving gyaan about the importance of knowing one’s mother tongue in addition to learning “A B C D”. We should remember that this was a movie which came at a time when we had enough students opting for schools which were not essentially English medium. We should also remember that all those who trained in non-English medium schools were no less intelligent and we have many pioneers in various fields from those students too. I know I will be stirring a hornet’s nest if I talk about which is a better language for educating the masses of the country.

My personal feeling is that education should be in a language where in the parents also understand what the child is learning so that they are able to clarify doubts that the child has as he is studying. People may feel that my thoughts are very old fashioned but…..

Today happens to be the birth anniversary of Mehmood who would have been 88. He knew how to bring a smile on the viewer’s face, how to tickle their funny bone. He was the son of actor/dancer Mumtaz Ali and brother of dancer Minu Mumtaz (about whom our Sadanandji has written in his this post). His brother Anwar Ali was also an actor who paired with Mehmood in “Bombay To Goa” as Rajesh to Mehmood’s Khanna.

Mehmood took up odd jobs at a rather young age to help look after his large family which had 7 siblings. He decided to try acting to support his family once he married and had his first son and had his first break in “C.I.D” with a small role of the killer. He had other small unnoticed roles in “Do Bigha Zameen” “Pyaasa” etc. His innings in Bollywood was peppered with comic roles that were an essential part of the story and we often saw him drill sense into older characters towards the end of the movie.

I saw a part of “Meri bhabhi” (1969) this morning where he was doing just that as Shambu. But he was a class apart when he turned to movie making and gave us classics like “Bhoot Bungla”, “Padosan”, “Bombay To Goa” and the most poignant, message carrying of them all “Kunwara Baap”. His last movie released in 1996 “Dushman Duniya Ka” which he directed and Jeetendra headed the cast. It is interesting to note that Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan had special appearances in it.

Remembering the actor, producer, director Mehmood with this song sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle.
