#the Decade of Seventies – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————
# 1983 Songs – Century Celebrations # Debutant Movie- “Woh Saat Din”
—————————————-——————————
Regulars on the blog must be aware of my love for the year ‘1983’. It was an important year of my life as I had appeared and successfully passed the Board exams for standard 10th that year. And the other important and unforgettable happening of the year was India winning the ‘World Cup of Cricket’ in that year.
There were many other things also but here we come back to our most favorite topic i.e. Hindi films.
In Hindi movies it was the year of Rajesh Khanna. His movies ‘Avtaar’, ‘Souten’ and ‘Agar Tum Naa Hotey’ were released in this year and they were successful movies of this year.
This year was also an important year for Bappi Lahiri as he composed music for as many as nineteen movies (equal to R.D. Burman who was the other contender for composing music in maximum number of movies that year). Total 130 movies were released during this year.
That year also saw ‘Himmatwaalaa’, a south production featuring Jeetendra with Sridevi.
Movies like ‘Ardh Satya’, ‘Arpan’, ‘Andhaa Qaanoon’, ‘Betaab’, ‘Hero’ (coming at the year-end), ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’, ‘Hamse Hain Zamaana’, ‘Justice Choudhary’, ‘Kalaakaar’, ‘Mandi’,’Mujhe Insaaf Chaahiye’, ‘Naukar Biwi Kaa’, ‘Painter Babu’, ‘Rang Birangi’, ‘Razia Sultan’ etc etc …
There were Amitabh movies like ‘Mahaan’, ‘Coolie’, and ‘Pukaar’ other than ‘Andhaa Qaanoon’. Dharmendra had ‘Qayaamat’ other than ‘Naukar Biwi Ka’. And Rajesh Khanna had ‘Nishaan’ with (Jeetendra) other than his three movies mentioned above. And not to forget the ‘English’ titled movies of Kumar Gaurav ‘Lovers’ and ‘Romance’.
With all these mainstream movies (yes, I consider ‘Ardh Satya’ in this) there were movies from ‘parallel cinema’ and /or ‘offbeat movies’. Such movies included ‘Mandi’, ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’, ‘Aagaman’, and ‘Kaalkaa’, ‘Kisi Se Naa Kehnaa’, ‘Sadma’, ‘Pasand Apni Apni’, ‘Sookhaa’, ‘Trikon Ka Chauthaa Kon’, ‘Zaraa Si Zindagi’.
Some movies overlap the distinction between ‘main stream’ and ‘parallel or offbeat movies’ and that is why my listing of them may not be accurate according to the yardsticks of others. Also I personally feel that gradually this difference of ‘commercial’ and ‘parallel or art cinema’ was getting blurred and people had started appreciating good cinema. People of the younger generations too, were watching and appreciating such movies.
I might be missing names of many movies which readers would think should have been mentioned in the above ‘lists’. Like there were some Mithun Chakravarty movies too viz. ‘Wanted’ etc. (though I have mentioned ‘Mujhe Insaaf Chaahiye’).
( I would request reader to forgive me if I have missed anybody’s favorites in above listing.)
Among all these movies there was one more movie which had a very nice musical score and its treatment was also altogether different. This movie has some of the finest performances from the stars included in it.
Today we will be introducing this movie on the blog.
I was surprised when I noticed that this movie is yet to make a debut on the blog. Readers will also be surprised , particularly when one goes through the list of movies from ‘1983’ that have been presented on the blog as of now.
For now I am not representing the list here.
For today’s discussion I would present a list of films from the year ‘1983’, from the Composer/s who composed music for the song under discussion in this post.
Here is the list.

Yes, the music for all the above movies was composed by the music-duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Did you guess today’s movie?
Yes, the movie for today is ‘Woh Saat Din’.
“Woh Saat Din” or ‘Woh 7 Din” was directed by Bapu for ‘S.K. Films Enterprises’. It had Anil Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure, Naseeruddin Shah, Master Raju, Ashalata, Neelu Phoole, Dina Pathak, Baby Suchita, Shaukat Azmi and others.
Actor Jagdeep had a guest appearance in this movie.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 23.06.1983.
The story of this movie was based on K. Bhagyaraja’s movie ‘Aanda Yel Naatkal’ (in Tamil) which is turn is said to be inspired by the real-life story of comedian J.P. Chandrababu.
The original Tamil film ‘Aandha 7 Naatkal’ was remade in Telugu in ‘1981’ as ‘Radha Kalyanam’, in Hindi in ‘1983’ as ‘Woh 7 Din’ and in Kannada in ‘1989’ as ‘Love Maadi Nodu’ (as mentioned on Wikipedia).
“Woh 7 Din” has six songs which all were written by Anand Bakshi and music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Suresh Wadkar, Shabbir Kumar, Kavita Krishnamurty, Anil Kapoor and Master Raju had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
I remember to have watched this movie with my uncle (who was serving in military and had come on vacation) at Akola (I was studying there). I remember that I had likened this movie very much. All its songs were good and they were quite popular in those days, though none of them featured in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of ‘1983’.
Today’s song from this movie is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Shabbir Kumar. Padmini Kolhapure and Anil Kapoor lip-sync this song on screen.
Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant-Pyarelal are the composers of this song.
With this beautiful song this movie ‘Woh Saat Din-1983’ makes its debut on the blog today. This song also happens to be the 100th song in the blog for movies released in the year 1983.

With passage of time, we in this blog have become sedate and relaxed, as befits people who have matured (read aged). 🙂 Things that we found exciting in the past fail to enthuse us any longer. The sense of keen anticipation is no longer there. People in the past would begin to think and talk in advance about forthcoming important blog events. That is no longer the case.
Take the case of Blog Century posts. This regular event used to be a keenly anticipated event in the past, even when such an even used to occur once every fortnight. Today, this event has become more rare and happens once in two months (or more), and yet goes largely unnoticed.
But the important thing is, the blog never stops. The rate of posting of songs may have slowed down considerably, but we ensure that there is no DOT day in the blog. The last DOT day in the blog was on 25 December 2019. After that, the blog has not had a DOT day for last 645 days ! And that gives us the confidence and the feeling that the blog is always on the move.
Perhaps it is past experience, or may be it is my inherent laid back nature that these days I do not think much amout the century post till the last moment ! Only when I realise that the Century post is due and it has to be posted TODAY that I start wondering what song to select for the occasion.
Initially, I had considered a “new” song for the occasion and I had collected some details as well. But when I searched, I was unable to find those details that I had collected after spending several hours. So I had to postpone that song for some future occasion.
The songs covered in the guest posts that were covered during thelast few days gave me some idea what song I should pick as the century song. I had almost decided that the final song of “Hamraahi”(1945) should be the century song. This was a rare song. This was a song that grew up on me the more I listened to it. But then I realised that I needed to pick this song based on other consideration. There were two consideration. I noticed that a music director duo was on 299. I also noticed that the songs covered from movies of a particular year added up to 599. So, this called for a song from that year and composed by that music director duo. In addition, we recently had the birthday of Lata Mangeshkar. So this song should be sung by her.
Considering all that, I decided to combine all the above centuries to decide on the next blog century , viz Blog century number 166, or in other words , blog post number 16600.
This post, the blog post number 16600, covers a song from “Saawan Bhaadon”(1949). “Saawan Bhaadon”(1949) directed by Ravindra Dave for Prakash Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Munawar Sultana, Omprakash, Indu, Raj Adeeb, Jankidas etc in it.
The movie had ten songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the past.
This song, the sixth song from the movie, is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Mulkraj Bhakri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.
This song is the 300th song of Husnlal Bhagatram as a music director in the blog. This song is the 600th song in the blog from movies released in 1949. We in the blog have 500 plus songs from movies of other years, but this song makes 1949 the first year in the blog that has now contributed 600 songs in the blog.
It was the year 1949 that marked the beginning of the golden era of Hindi film music. Husnlal Bhagatram played a major role in making 1949 a musically supersaturated year. This year also saw the emergence of Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer who would rule the HFM for the next six decades and more. Husnlal Bhagatram were the first music directors to complete 50 songs with Lata Mangeshkar. They utilised the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in 28 songs in 1949 and 40 songs in 1950. C Ramchandra were second, in using Lata Mangeshkar voice in 19 songs in 1949 and 30 songs in 1950. And this song serves as a (belated) birthday celebration song for Lata Mangeshkar !
So, one can see that this song from this movie “Saawan Bhaadon”(1949) ticks all the boxes, as far its eligibility as a Blog century song is concerned. If there is still any doubts in anyone’s mind about the credentials of this song, that would be removed when one listens to this song. Personally I listened to this song only now for the first time, more that 72 years later. And it sounds as sweet and divine as it may have sounded to the ears of music lovers who were around in 1949 !
With this song, the blog completes yet another century, and we duly take fresh guard for the next century.
I take this opportunity to thank one and all, whose continued and consistent support, encouragement and contributions is providing this musical bandwagon with the necessary fuel to keep taking us the newer and nbewer destinations in this musical journey.

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 4
———————————–————––——————————————–————
Chaudhvin ka chaand ho
Ya aaftaab ho….
Jo bhi ho tum khudaa ki qasam
Lajawaab ho…oo….ooo
This time it is the turn of Music director who is known as the creator of iconic songs, popularly known as Ravi. His association with Rafi sahab begins in 1956-57 with the first film “Ek Saal” with 2 solo songs written by Prem Dhawan. Many of these iconic songs composed by Ravi were sung by Rafi sahab in this long association which ended only with the demise of Rafi Sahab in 1980. I counted 251 songs composed by Ravi in the excel sheet of Rafi sahab songs. Around 200 of these songs are upto late 60’s. In the 70’s Rafi sahab’s output has as it is decreased so it is not surprising that the 70’s decade there are less than 50 songs by the team of Mohammed Rafi-Ravi, with various lyricists.
Starting from 1957, there are around 50 songs upto 1960. So the 60’s decade is the most productive one with around 150 songs. This, despite Ravi being at the peak of his career working extensively with the B.R. Chopra camp. There are clear indications that Ravi preferred to have Rafi sahab sing his songs whenever he was working outside the BR camp, when he had Mahendra Kapoor sing most of his songs.
The very summit of this association is the legendary solo of Chaudhvin ka chaand(1960). The film has 5 Rafi solo numbers, all of them popular songs, all the places that I saw. But the excel sheet is listing one additional song with the words “yehan ke dost ba-wafa”, so there is a possibility of a small snippet of rendition of some poetry maybe lying hidden in the movie. The story really does take off from here with 7 songs in ‘Tu nahin aur Sahi’ (1960). Then comes the sonorous Husn waale tera jawaab nahin in Gharana (1961). With 6 songs in “China Town” 1962, Rafi has become the only male singer for Ravi in all ‘AA’ and ‘AB’ grade movies which had ‘AAA’ grade music. Rafi sahab went on to croon these outstanding solos/duet for Sunil Dutt in the film “Aaj aur kal” (1963) composed by Ravi:
mujhe gale se lagaa lo bahut udaas hoon main |
Ye aadiyaan ye fizaayen bulaa rahi hain tumhen |
itni haseen itni jaaan raat kya karen |
In 1963 Ravi had Rafi sahab sing 5 songs each in Bharosa, Pyar ka Bandhan and Grihasti, on Mehmood, Guru Dutt, Raj Kumar Johnny Walker and Manoj Kumar. It is most likely that there were no other male playback singers in the credits of these movies too. This is apart from the 7 songs including 4 solos in ‘Pyar Kiya to Darna kya” for Aagha and Shammi Kapoor. 1963 also saw the song Sau baar janam lenge in the film “Ustadon ke Ustaad”.
Here is a list of 4 of the popular and unique, of the 7 Rafi songs in the film “Door ki Aawaaz”:
Song | Singers |
---|---|
Ham bhi agar bachche hote | Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle |
Husn se chaand bhi sharmaayaa hai | Mohd Rafi |
Kyaa yoonhi rooth ke jaane ko muhabbat ki thhi | Mohd Rafi |
Muqaddar aazmaanaa chaahtaa hoon | Mohd Rafi |
Shakeel Badayuni seems to have formed a newer equation with Ravi post “Chaudhvi ka Chaand” going by the no. of films I am finding in the Rafi list where they worked together.
Rafi-Ravi combination moved on to Shehnai in 1964 with 4 solos and 1 duet, in a Rafi-Asha score, with one melodious solo for Asha Is tarah todaa mera dil .
“Khandaan” 1965 again was again an all-Rafi score with 6 songs, 7th being the iconic Lata solo Tumhi mere mandir tumhi meri poojaa tumhi devtaa ho .
I simply must list the iconic solos by Rafi sahab in Do Badan(1966):
Song | Singers |
---|---|
Bhari duniyaa mein aakhir dil ko samjhaane kahaan jaayen | Mohd Rafi |
Is Jahan Se (Verse) | Mohd Rafi |
Naseeb mein jiske jo likhaa thaa | Mohd Rafi |
Rahaa gardishon mein hardam | Mohd Rafi |
There is a bonus in this film also with additional verse “is jahan se’, we can look forward to finding and enjoying.
In 1967, there were ‘Meherbaan’ and “Nai Roshni” followed with “Do Kaliyan” and ‘Neel Kamal’ in 1968. Do I really need to list the songs of ‘Neel Kamal”? I dont think so. “Neel Kamal” atleast had a Manna Dey song on Mehmood Khaali dabba khaali bottle lele mere yaar .
This is 1969 and Ek phool do mali:
Song | Singers |
---|---|
Aulaad waalon phoolo phalo | Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle |
Chal chal re naujawaan-parody song | Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle |
O nanhe se farishte | Mohd Rafi |
Ye parda hata do | Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle |
They reach early 70’s to create these two meaningful songs:
Song | Movie (year) | Singers | MD | Lyricist |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mujhe ishq hai tujhi se meri jaan e zindagaani | Ummeed(1971) | Mohd Rafi | Ravi | Shakeel Badayuni |
Mere Dost Tujhe Tera Meet Mubarak | Dhadkan(1972) | Mohd Rafi | Ravi | Ravi & Ali |
We must go back to the early years of Rafi-Ravi association to reach “Mehendi’ 1958. This is a recital by Rafi sahab of a poetry titled ‘Baazaar-e-husn’ by Kaamil Rashid. Ajit is reciting this nazm in the movie on a Kotha, presumably of Umrao Jaan. This movie Mahendi 1958 was based on a novel “Umrao Jaan Ada” (1904) authored by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. The other two movies named “Umrao Jaan’ were based on the same novel. This is an affirmation of the feeling I had, that it must be based on a novel, while watching ‘Umrao Jaan’ 1981.
This recital is another great rendition, without music, reminding me of the rendition of Unhen qissa e gham jo likhne ko baithhe in ‘Naya Qanoon’(1965) and Kya gham jo andheri hain raaten in ‘Barsaat ki raat’ (1960).
In the movie, this recital happens, then the reply by ‘Umrao Jaan’ in Lata Mangehskar’s voice is posted here bhari mehfil hai ye afsaana nahin. The recital on screen is by an actor named Jayshree, whose identity is not clear. I have seen the posted songs of the film to find if this is the veteran Marathi film actress Jayshree Gadkar. The film’s poster by SaReGaMa has Jayshree Gadkar on it. She has been seen in a few hindi films in later years like “Bahaaron ke Sapne’1967. But there is a question mark if it is the same actor in Mehendi(1958). The cast of the film is Jayashree, Ajit, Veena, Kumar, Baalam, Mirza Musharraf, Lalita Pawar, Baby Devika, Adib, Ismail, Prakash, Jago, Maqbool, Krishnakant, Munshi Munakka, Hamid – I, Dinanath, Anwari Bai, Qaisarbai, & Mumtaz Begum.
These four songs of the film are posted in the blog:
Song | Date of posting |
---|---|
Apne kiye pe koyi pashemaan ho gayaa | 21 december 2009 |
Bedard zamaana tera dushman hai | 26 december 2009 |
Pyaar ki duniya lutegi hamen maaloom na thhaa | 11 may 2012 |
Bhari mehfil hai ye afsaana nahin | 22 may 2012 |
I had come accross long-time back and all these years I was under the impression that there is this song by Rafi, a recital filmed on Ajit, and it is already posted. Then last month I found this song and saved the link for having it in this series, as it was not posted. For last two weeks, I have not worked on any posts, but it was there on the back of the mind, that some of these wonderful songs are saved in my drafts and I need to get on with it. Finally, yesterday I opened the laptop, with this very song on the mind, and lo, there it was in one of the comments that the recital is not posted.
The question/grievance/complaint is here now, the answer to it was here already.
Editor’s note:-This song is the 500th song from movies of 1958 to appear in the blog.

Lyrics
kahaan se aayi ee ee
kahaan se aayi hai
nazron mein laakhon teer chhupaa ke
kya laayi
kya le jaayegi
bol saamne aake
kya laayi
kya le jaayegi
bol samne aake
ho tu bol saamne aake
layi hoon main husn jawaani
ulfat ki rangeen kahaani
laayi hoon main husn jawaani
ulfat ki rangeen kahaani
le jaaungi pyaar chura ke
bol saamne aake
ho tu bol samne aake
ye husn hai faani
mast jawaani do din ki
ulfat ki rangeen kahaani do din ki
dekh le dil ki aankhon se
tu parda zara uthha ke
parda zara uthha ke
dekh le dil ki aankhon se
tu parda zara uthha ke
parda zara uthha ke
ho tu bol saamne aake
do din hai to hans loon gaa loon
dushman ko dildaar bana loon
do din hain to hans loon gaa loon
dushman ko dildar bana loon
naagan si zulfen bikhra ke
bol saamne aake
ho tu bol saamne aake
hansna gaana dil ka lagaana khel nahin
dard ki duniya mein muskaana khel nahin
jeena ho to jeene waale
jeena naam kamake
jeena naam kamaake
jeena ho to jeene waale
jeena naam kamaa ke
jeena naam kamaa ke
ho tu bol saamne aake
kya laayi
kya le jaayegi
bol saamne aake
ho tu bol saamne aake

inkaar kiya to pyaar hansa
iqraar kiya to laaj hansi
inkaar kiya to pyaar hansa
