Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 25

This discovery of a repeat song will have to be termed as Mother of All Repeat Songs. And just in case, before you start wondering whether poor dear me has decided to take a step off the deep end, let me explain.

Ostensibly searching for something else totally disconnected with repeat songs in Hindi films, I chanced to read this caption on a YouTube link. The face in the thumbnail image is neither Bharat Bhushan or Shashi Kapoor. And so, intrigued as I was, I clicked on the thumbnail with the face of R Madhavan, to play this song whose caption was sounding so very familiar. It turns out, yes, it is a repeat song – a repeat of the very endearing and a must-have favorite from the 1969 film ‘Pyaar Ka Mausam’. This signature track has been the theme of many an amorous message of love for the connoisseurs of the Hindi film music.

Ah, but the story of my discovery had just started. I checked out the name of the film. Turns out it is ‘Dil Vil Pyaaar Vyaar’ from 2002. I track down the Wikipedia page of this film. I had not heard of this film earlier. The story line weaves around the romance lives of young friends. Seemed like a run-of-the-mill rom-com tales that abound the landscape of the Hindi film world. An immediate analogy that came to mind, from the era familiar to me, was ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ of 1957. Similar theme, romance tales of three young friends.

Ah but what wonderful and divine music that film has. I will not dwell on the delightful music created by the legendary Madan Mohan – I am sure all readers and friends are already very much taken in by the songs of that film from 1957.

Getting back to ‘DVPV’ (‘Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar’), I was thinking – seems like the producer of this film did not have much imagination to engage song writers and MDs to create some fresh songs. So he chose to easy route to re-use this song.

But as I continued down the Wikipedia page, and reached the Soundtrack section, my eyes remained agape in wonder. The film has 13 songs listed. And (OK now, hold your breath) – ALL, I repeat ALL songs are repeats of earlier hit songs of the 60s to 80s time period. Looking closey at the list, the second realization, and a big one, hit home. ALL the thirteen tracks are creations of RD Burman. Now this discovery surely something great and different.

A little more research and I am able to locate more information online. The producer of this film is a diehard fan of RD Burman and the music created by him. And this film ‘DVPV’ has been created as a tribute for his favorite MD. So, a story and a screenplay was conjured and 13 of RDB’s famous hits have been woven into it.

The producer of this film is Vivek Vaswani. As it turns out, he himself is the author of the story line of this film. The screenplay has been adapted from the story by Sujit Sen.

Of course the credits for the song will remain with the original creators. But for this film, the music for the songs has been re-arranged and re-recorded by Babloo Chakravorty. So all songs in this film are recorded in different voices.

Ah yes, in case you are wondering – yes, I plan to bring on board all the thirteen songs of this film, in good time. Quite a bonanza here for this series.

This wonderful song from ‘Pyaar Ka Mausam’ has been re-recorded in the voice of Hariharan. On screen, it is performed by R Madhvan. I am sure all are familiar with this new name. My introduction to Madhavan has been through the 2009 hit film ‘3 Idiots’. I will try to say more about this film and its performers, in subsequent episodes, as I venture to cover all the songs of this film.

Other actors we see in this clip are Asrani and Namrata Shirodkar. The wonders that a song can do has not changed across the decades that Hindi films have been created, exhibited and watched. It has only become better, more imaginative and more incredulous. In the very early days of this blog itself, Atul ji had come to a conclusion, and he has so documented it in many a write up. That a situation in Hindi films takes about 3 minutes or so to be transformed. All it takes is a song. The song starts in a particular mood, with a particular expectation, and by the time the song ends, the desired mood and desired outcome is achieved and the expectations realized. In many earlier such discussions, we have seen quite wondrous and amazing things happen during the duration of a song.

With this song, things are no different. Rather, the stretch on the gullibility of comprehension is a bit too much. Madhavan is on a stage, participating in a music competition. Things to be noted about the setting. The stage where the performance happens is designed like a music CD. And the effect is complete with the singer handling a very old fashioned standing microphone. The antics Madhavan attempts with this mike takes us even further back to Elvis Presley performing live on stage, back in the 1950s.

His lady love, Namrata, is at the airport, already checked in for a flight that will take her thousands of miles away to another country, away from her beau. And voila. A ‘strategically’ placed TV screen within her view starts to telecast the music competition just as Madhavan is to present his song. The song starts. It is the replay of the famous aria – this one, from ‘Pyaar Ka Mausam’.

All it takes in one stanza for the lady love to make up her mind to abandon her plans to leave the country, and she decides to go back into the beckoning arms of her lover. The second stanza is even more wondrous. The lady exits from the airport, starts to drive to where the competition is in progress. And, another VOILA – this time in capital letters – she drives through the Bombay traffic, with all her memories about times spent with her lover replaying on the mind’s screen, reaches the location and is on stage with her lover, by the time the second stanza comes to a close. And yes, even has time for a change of attire. The applause by the audience is still in progress as she makes an entrance through a hazy and foggy doorway, with the director making utmost efforts to make it appear like a fairy descending through the clouds.

I remember having seen a cartoon long long back advising filmgoers to please leave their logic and reasoning outside the door, when entering a cinema hall to watch a Hindi film (or maybe any film for that matter).

So mission accomplished. In less than three minutes, from the verge of just starting to board her flight, the lady love makes it from the airport to the competition stage and into the arms of her lover.

Long be loved – the wondrous Hindi film song. Yes, all it takes is a song.

I had heard a part of the above poem and just decided to reproduce it in a post. But while typing the whole saga, it lost me on the way to the end. I am able to understand it word to word, but to understand what exactly Javedsahab is trying to say or ‘in ke kehne ka tatparya kya hai’, I will have to go deep. Or maybe not so deep and what he says is what he means.

This terrible year is coming to an end. Human kind has endured a test of psychological strength this year. And has learned (hopefully) that even if places of worship are not open, the Almighty is reachable from anywhere, for the universe, the world and its occupants, owners and tenants, wheelers and dealers, the powerful and the poor, the destitute and the able bodied, are all His creations. The ‘khalaa’ that Javed Akhtar refers to in the poem above, is also the creation of the Almighty creator. So is the concept if ‘waqt’. Whether it is running away from you or towards you. The time is allotted to us, to live on this earth peacefully with other creations. Before I move on, ‘khalaa’ is space, in worldly terms is means ‘empty space’ and in celestial terms it is infinite.

Its Mohammed Rafi Sahab’s 96th birth anniversary on 24/12/2020. Usually for Rafi sahab’s anniversary posts, or for the century posts, Raja ji is invited to do the honors of writing a special post. But I am seizing the opportunity, this time round. It is Rafi Sahab birth anniversary post as well as the 3100th songs post by Rafi sahib on the blog. This post is also my 300th song post, so a special Rafi song is called for this occasion.

Two months ago, I was looking for a song by Usha Timothy to post for her birthday on 8th October. I found a song by her, but it turned out to be a group song. The audio clip was 11 minutes long. The song itself is more than 9 minutes. Myswar.com listed this as a two part song one by Suman Kalyanpur and Usha Timothy and another by Mohammad Rafi and Manna Dey. It is from the 1966 film “Sunehre Kadam” and is composed by Bulo C. Rani. The lyricist is Nyay Sharma.

This is a very special song I have come to realize it while writing the lyrics. I will have to list them so that I don’t miss any points:

1. It has the longest solo rally, for a group song by Rafi sahab and large part of this rally is with minimal music.
2. This must be the only song with these four singers together.
3. The way the repetition of lines is done throughout the song, with singing of the same line in a different way. This is especially true of Rafi sahab’s repeated lines and also Manna De’s. In Rafi sahab’s songs, invariably it can be taken for granted, that the repetition of lines will have variations.
4. The song is a like a relay race, and the one starting it is doing the winner’s lap, with the trophy.

Actually Manna De has a small part to sing but Usha Timothy is having very few lines to sing. Seeing the video was a surprise again. It is a competition sort of song with two artists performing on stage and singing is done by Agha in Rafi’s voice and Shashi Kala in Suman Kalyanpur’s voice. Rehman is seen standing next to Agha and enjoying his singing, so is a female standing next to Shashi Kala similarly amused by the song. The expressions of quite enjoyment on Rehman’s face can be described perfectly in one word, i. e. “Mehzooz”.

A comment on youtube said that this song based on raag zhinjhoti/maanjhkhamaj. Whether it is true or not, the song does sound unique and stand out as a song to be savoured.

The song is like a gorgeous long meal, a smorgasbord. Mohammed Rafi sahab is singing different portions of this song, with relish. And we listeners are mesmerised. The bass of Manna Dey’s parts is in tune with Rafi sahab’s sometimes sweet, sometimes mischievous, nasheeli, some with smooth softness. We can’t actually eat this, but we consume it and our senses absorb the nuances of the song. I just wish the parts where Suman Kalyanpure and Usha Timothy are singing, could be softened a little. They bring a mesmerised person back to earth, but Rafi sahab is back again in the last part of the song, in tandem with Manna Dey and they both bring it to a level field so we are not too sorry the song has ended, and there is no more of it to be heard for the first time.

I actually looked far and wide, to find if there is still more left to be found of this song. Lyrics by Nyay Sharma are equally good and make the most of the tune of the song. But for the large parts of the song, the words were redundant I felt, it was the raag and the rhythm and soft vocal voice singing the words which became paramount. This is a rarity, as it happens only with classical raagaa’s. The only other time I can recall this happening with me, was when I heard Kumar Gandharv here .
Is this what is known as a sum total greater than its parts?

Remembrance day of Mukri :

Mukri also spelled as Muqri was an Indian film actor, who worked as a comedian in Hindi films. Born as Muhammad Umar Mukri in Alibagh, in Kokani Muslim Family, he started his film career with the film Pratima along with noted film actor Dilip Kumar in 1945. Born of 5th January 1922, he left for heavenly abode on 4th September’2000 at the age of 72 years.

Mukri was seen in many films in character roles and comic role. One movie which comes to mind in ‘Ram aur Shyam”. Here also he featured with Dilip Kumar as his friend.

Today is the 20th death anniversary, so as a tribute, I have found a wonderful comic song picturized on Mukri and Mehmood. The film is ‘Madhavi’(1969), with Laxmikant –Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi as music director and lyricist. The movie had very good songs, I hear. This is the only Rafi song picturized on Mukri which remained to be posted, going by the information is Rafi sahab’s excel sheet. I expect, Mukri may not be as prolific as Mehmood, Johhny Walker or Agha. So there are most likely fewer songs where he actually sings. In this song Manna De is giving playback for Mehmood and Rafi Sahab is singing for Mukri. Now, in the absence of song video, how can I be certain of this ? I have searched on youtube, though the movie “Madhavi” is available, video of only one song is there. All other songs, only audio is available, including the song being posted. Actually, on closer inspection, there are voices of both Mehmood and Mukri are there is the song along with the singers. This is a comic song in real terms, maybe a rip-off on “Padosan” songs.

It was my husband who confirmed the playback for Mehmood and Mukri. As I was noting the lyrics this evening, he asked from where I had found this song from ‘Madhavi”. This is not a known song for me, but may husband knows the songs of this film very well.

The name did ring a bell that I had contributed the lyrics of Lata solo of the two songs posted :

My husband also helpfully given the story outline of this costume drama film of Kings, Princes and Princesses. Sanjay Khan is a prince and Deepa, in title role of Madhavi, is a princess.
