“Achhoot Kanya” (1936) was made at an era far far removed from the present day. It was produced by Bombay Talkies. Its producer was Himanshu Rai and it was directed by a German director called Franz Osten. Even those who do not think much of old songs may have heard of this song or at least this movie. This movie called “Achhut Kanya” (untouchable girl) produced in 1936 was obviously made on a topic that was too far ahead of its time and the makers of this movie did a great social service by making a movie on this topic. It was the first out of only two movie that Mahatma Gandhi is reported to have seen, the other movie being “Ram Rajya”.
