Blog Ten Year Challenge (2009-2019)-Song number 24
—————————————————-
Nowadays, we generally believe that the golden era of HFM lasted from 1949 till 1980 and after that the general standards of HFM fell down several notches, never to recover again.

When I was growing up in 1970s, I felt that this deterioration of HFM had started in 1970s itself. Some of the songs that later were considered classics were regarded by mediocre by me during those days. For instance, the songs of “Do Chor”(1972) were mediocre for me. Song like Yaari ho gayi yaar se lak tunoo tunoo was jarring to my ears. “Sanyaasi” (1974) songs were downright mediocre as far as I was concerned.

Many Laxmikant Pyarelal compositions of 1970s were chaalu to my ears and I did not like them much. I did not like the songs of “Suhaag”(1979) much but today these songs are considered near classics.

“Aas Paas”(1980) songs were very much mediocre songs to my ears and minds. No wonder that I did not watch this movie. The most chaalu and popular song of the movie was Tum jo chale gaye to hogi badi kharaabi. This movie made its debut in the blog with this song. That was on 31 march 2009, viz exactly ten years ago.

The movie had six songs in it, but only one more song from the movie has since been covered. This second song is Hamko bhi gham ne maara which was posted on 6 december 2013. After that, there has been no more covereage of songs from this movie for more than five years.

Now, thanks to the “blog ten year challenge” series, this movie “Aas Paas”(1980) came to the notice of Avinash Scrapwala and he sent the lyrics of another song from “Aas Paas”(1980).

This song, the third from the movie to appear in the blog, is sung by Rafi and Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is omposed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a typical Punjabi style dance song. It is picturised on Dharmendra, Hema Malini and many other male and female dancers in bright colorful attires. harmendra with his two left feet style dancing makes for a sharp contrast from Hema Malini, a dancing exponent.

As mentioned earlier, I had not watched this movie during its time and I was not even aware of this song till now. So this song comes in the blog exactly ten years after another song appeared in the blog. And at the same time, this song comes to my notice some four decades after it was created. So I suppose this can also form some kind of a challenge series, viz – Songs coming to notice forty year after its creation. 🙂

For now, here is this latest presentation under the “Blog Ten Year Challenge (2009-2019)” series.

Missing Films of 1960s – 102
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

As I checked the listings today, I find there still are a good about dozen films of 1960s, and this homework list, that are traceable, available and have to be covered. I was earlier thinking may be just four or five more to go. Ok so, abhi to we are in good stride here, and hope to complete the available list in the next about two weeks. 🙂

Today’s film is ‘Soldier’ from 1969. This film also has an alternate name – ‘Thakur Diler Singh’. And so on YouTube, we find songs available by both names. The film is produced under the banner of PS Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Shyam. An short list of actors – Kumar Ajeet, Deepa, Shyam Kumar, Rajan Haksar, Randhir, Pal Sharma, Parasram, Jagdev, and Bilkis Shabnam.

The Geet Kosh lists 5 songs for this film. All songs are from the pen of Aziz Kashmiri, and the music is by the duo of Sonik Omi. Aziz Kashmiri, by this time in his career, was seasoned songwriter. His active career starts at the beginning of the 1940s, and goes all the way to mid 1970s – a recognized body of work of about 230+ songs from about 50 films. To his credit are such notable films as ‘Himmat’ (1941), ‘Iraada’ (1944), ‘Khamosh Nigaahen’ (1946), ‘Mirza Sahiban’ (1947),’Ek Thi Ladki’ (1949), ‘Dholak’ and ‘Sabz Baagh’ (both 1951), ‘Aag Ka Driya’ and ‘Ek Do Teen’ (both 1953), ‘Dekhi Teri Bambai’ (1961), ‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’, ‘Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi’ and ‘Akalmand’ (all 1966) etc. His last film, as per Geet Kosh, is ‘International Crook’ from 1974.

Today’s song is in the voice of Asha Bhosle. Although the video clips of some songs of this film are available, for this particular song, I could locate only the audio clip. From the sound of it, it seems to be a group dance situation. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to add more information about this song.

Another player from 1960s makes its debut on our blog.  Listen to and enjoy this wonderful creation.

“Lakhpati”(1948) was directed by Ravindra Jaikar for Fim Chitra Corporation, Bombay. This “social” movie had Sulochana Chatterji, D M Sapru, Rajan Haksar, Om Prakash, Baby Tabassum, LLeela Chitnis, Narmada Shankar, Dharpure, Nagotkar, Satyapal etc in it.

This forgotten movie had eleven obscure songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fourth song from “Lakhpati”(1948) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Meena Kapoor. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Missing Films of 1960s – 101
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And yet, once again, another melodious and enchanting song. And once again, from a film that one has not heard anything about. The film is ‘Surya Devta’ from 1969 – as obscure as it can get. I have not heard of this film or its songs, before finding them in the Geet Kosh.

The film is produced by Alice Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Sharad Desai. The cast of actors is listed as Nirupa Roy, Ashish Kumar, Manimala, Sapru, Jeevan, Shekhar, Amrit Patel, Sarita Khatau, P Kailash, Sarita Devi, Shukla, Dalpat, Bhoj Kumar, and Kapoor.

The film has six songs listed. The lyrics are written by two poets – Madan and Bharat Vyas. Today’s song is written by Madan. The music is composed by Avinash Vyas. The singing voice is of Suman Kalyanpur.

As I am preparing this post, and checking the genre categories, I realize that this song is an opposite genre of the “Please Don’t Go” type songs. Something like “Please Let Me Go” song. 🙂 I can think of one or two other such songs.

But what a lovely melodious composition, and what a lovely rendering by Suman Kalyanpur. A song that surely should have been more heard and more known.

Listen and enjoy.

Song – Jaane De, O Bedardi Jaane De  (Surya Devta) (1969) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Madan, MD – Avinash Vyas

Lyrics

jaane de
oo bedardi jaane de
oo bedardi jaane de
morey maathe ki bindiya bikhar gai re
koi poochhega to kya kahungi main
jaane de
oo bedardi jaane de

rok ke meri raah
naam badnaam na kar mere pyaar ka
rok ke meri raah
naam badnaam na kar mere pyaar ka
chaaron taraf pehra hai sainyyaan
is bairi sansaar ka
ab milne ki ghadiyaan guzar gayin re
koi poochhega to kya kahungi main
jaane de
oo bedardi jaane de

door rahoongi tan se sainyyaan
mann to hai tere paas re
door rahoongi tan se sainyyaan
mann to hai tere paas re
janam janam se hoon main teri
kar mujh pe vishwaas re
more kajre ki kor bigad gayi re
koi poochhega to kya kahungi main
jaane de
oo bedardi jaane de
morey maathe ki bindiya bikhar gai re
koi poochhega to kya kahungi main
jaane de
oo bedardi jaane de

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 23
————————————————

On 28th March of 2009, six songs had made their appearance on the blog. The songs and the films represented are listed below.

Man Darpan Hai Dushman 1939
Mitti Se Khelte Ho Patita 1953
Sach Kahta Hoon Bahut Haseen Ho Jaali Note 1960
Chanda Re Mori Patiyaan Le Jaa Banjaarin 1960
Baalamwa Bolo Na Bolo Na Picnic 1966
Yoon Na Sharmaa Phailaade Apni Gori Gori Baanhen Parwaana 1971

Of these six films, ‘Dushman’ (1939), ‘Patita’ (1953), ‘Jaali Note’ (1960), ‘Picnic’ (1966) and ‘Parwaana’ (1971) have been yippeee’d by now. The 1960 film ‘Banjaarin’ remains. This film has eight songs in all. Three songs have been showcased here. Today, we bring on the fourth song, on the 10th anniversary of this film’s debut here.

‘Banjaarin’ is produced by Ratan, under the banner of Ratan Pictures, Bombay. The film is a costume drama, directed by Jaswant Jhaveri.  The list of actors reads like Kanchan Kamini, Manhar Desai, Lalita Kumari, Sundar, Indira Bansal, Dalpat, Pal Sharma, Neelu, Shri Bhagwan, Bela, TN Sinha, Saroj, Murari, Paro, Prayag, Rehana, Paulson, Geeta, Chetan Kumar, Malika, Sheela R, CH Singh, Shekhar Purohit, Shriram, and S Chaddha.

The eight songs of this film are all penned by Pt Madhur. The music is by Pardesi – a lesser known artist whose name appears as music director for maybe 4 or 5 films only. The singing voice in this song is Geeta Dutt.

The video clip of this song is available. The clip is somewhat dim, and hence much details or even identification of artists on screen is not very feasible. The song is overlapped with a lot of other action in the film. The song itself seems to be a club dance song, or maybe a villain’s den song. There are a number of artists, but I am able to recognize only Sunder. I am not able to identify the main dancer in this song. Is that Sheela Ramani? I am not sure. I would request our more knowledgeable readers to please help with identification of artists.

The song is constructed well. I am hearing it for the first time today. It sure has an interesting rhythm and beat to it, and it has been rendered by Geeta Dutt with the customary zest. Listen and enjoy.

[PS: I have not been able to decipher two words in the first stanza. I request other folks to please help insert the correct words.]

Song – Qismat Ke Khel Tu Khel Khilaadi  (Banjaarin) (1960) Singer – Geeta Dutt, Lyrics – Pandit Madhur, MD – Pardesi

Only the audio of the song is available. The song sounds like a club dance song. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics

soch samajh le o parwaane
jal jaana aasaan nahin

teri nazar pehchaan gayi main
itni to naadaan nahin
soch samajh le o parwaane
jal jaana aaasaan nahin

phir na kahna in zulfon ke phande mein hum aa gaye
bade bade dil waale in nazron ka dhokha kha gaye
phir na kahna in zulfon ke phande mein hum aa gaye
bade bade dil waale in nazron ka dhokha kha gaye
kaun sa aisa dil waala hai
kaun sa aisa dil waala hai
jo mujh par kurbaan nahin
ehe soch samajh le o parwaane
jal jaana aasaan nahin
soch samajh le o parwaane
jal jaana aasaan nahin
teri nazar pehchaan gayi
main itni to naadaan nahin

jal jaana aasaan nahin

is mehfil mein jo bhi aaya
wo deewaana ho gaya
duniya to kya
apne se bhi wo begaana ho gaya
is mehfil mein jo bhi aaya
wo deewaana ho gaya
duniya to kya
apne se bhi wo begaana ho gaya
ye bhi adaayen na jaane tu
ye bhi adaayen na jaane tu
itna to anjaan nahin
soch samajh le o parwaane
jal jaana aasaan nahin

Missing Films of 1960s – 100
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ah, finally, we get to a new type of century today. This series of bringing on board the missing films of 1960s becomes the series that has clocked 100 posts – a first one for our blog. This series got initiated three and half years ago on 30th September, 2015, and we arrive at the century station for it, at the rate of about 2 to 3 songs per month on average. The pace could have been faster, yes, but well, we have what we have. 🙂

As you must be aware, this series got kicked off by the efforts of Khyati Ben. She got into the exercise to check how many films of the 1960s (period from 1961 to 1970) have been brought on board our blog, and which ones are still waiting to be included. She came up with a list of some 190+ films, still waiting in the wings. The analysis resulted in this exercise, to bring on board as many of these 190+ films are traceable / available. And it got assigned to yours truly. 🙂

I will wait to present the final analysis of numbers, as there is still about seven of eight more films that are traceable and will be represented here. So bear with me for a little more time for that.

The film that we bring on board today is an obscure and lesser known film by the name ‘Ek Masoom’ from 1969. The interesting thing about this film is that although the gramophone records of this film have been available, the film itself was not available for a very long time. Finally, the film surfaced about a year ago, and I acquired a copy of it through a collector friend. Video clips of some of the songs are now available on the YouTube.

The film is produced under the banner of GNS Films Bombay, and is directed by Akhtar Khalid. The cast of actors listed for this film is Tanuja, Saleem Durrani, Prem Chopra, Surendra, Abhi Bhattacharya, Uma, Azra, Sulochana, Helen, Jagdeep, Murad, Mohan Choti, and Baby Masoom. I have a concern about this list. The name of Saleem Durrani is included. However, I have seen the film, and the Saleem Durrani (the cricketer) that we are familiar with, is not visible in this film. The lead actor opposite to Tanuja is a different person. One possibility is that this actor also has the name Saleem Durrani, or has used this name in this film. I request our more knowledgeable readers to please help to identify the male actor in this song. The face is completely new and unfamiliar.

The film itself is a cops and robbers tale and Mohan Choti plays the role of a gangster boss. The lead person, whom we are trying to identify, plays a triple role in this film. He appears in different situations with different names, causing a lot of confusion to the people around him. And then finally, there is court room drama where all the three appear one by one, and the mystery of the correct identity is solved.

The film does not have much to write home about. The direction and editing is below par and leaves a lot to be desired. The storyline moves with fits and starts. But the songs – now that is a different story, as usual. Seven songs are listed for this film. The music is by N Dutta. The lyricist’s name is just very, very unfamiliar – Fareed Tonki. As I checked some more, I find his name in just one more film – ‘Zaalim Tera Jawab Nahin’ (1960), and one unreleased film ‘Aqidat Ke Phool’. Checking on our blog, I find that one creation by him is posted here. This is a famous non-film qawwaali – “Raste Alag Alag Hain Thikaana To Ek Hai”. So the gentleman is represented already on our blog, although no other information is traceable so far about him. His name, Fareed Tonki, suggest that he may be from the town named Tonk, in Rajasthan.

The song that I present today is an exquisite duet of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle – such a lovely lost gem this one is. The composition is easy paced and and light, and the rendition is very soft and soothing. A very pleasing song to hear to. (Of course, the song is much better heard than viewed.) On screen, it is Tanuja, and this gentleman that I am not able to identify.

Song – Poochh Le Dil Se Mere Ho Na Agar Mera Yakeen  (Ek Masoom) (1969) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Fareed Tonki, MD – N Dutta
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics

hmmmmm mmmmmm mmmm
hmmmmm mmmmmm mmmm
hmmmm hmmmm hmmmm hmmm

pooch le
dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen
main mohabbat hoon
mohabbat ke siwa kuchh bhi nahin
ae sanam
teri kasam
mujhko to hai tujh pe yakeen
par zamaane ka ye kehna
hai ke tu mera nahin
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen

har taraf phaili hain ye
rangeeniaan rukhsaar ki
har taraf phaili hain ye
rangeeniaan rukhsaar ki
tere hi dum se to hai
shadaabiaan gulzar ki
tu jahaan rakhe kadam
phool khilen laakhon wahin
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen

saamne tu hai mere
aur main tujhe dekha karoon
saamne tu hai mere
aur main tujhe dekha karoon
tere jalwon mein ab
shaam o sehar khoi rahoon
chhod ke daaman tera
jaaun na main aur kahin
ae sanam
teri kasam
mujhko to hai tujh pe yakeen

dil mera hai aaina
gar hai nazar pehchaan le
pehle hi pehchaan ke
dil hai diya ye jaan le
hum se kyon duniya jaley
ulfat koi jurm nahin
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen
main mohabbat hoon
mohabbat ke siwa kuchh bhi nahin
pooch le dil se mere
ho na agar mera yakeen

———————————————–
Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 22
————————————————

This day, ten years ago, the songs that we were listening to are listed below,

Dukh Ke Ab Din Beetat Naahin Devdas 1935
Antam Fantam Chhod De Babu Hum Sab Chor Hain 1956
Hai Kali Kali Ke Lab Par Lala Rukh 1958
Jaa Re Beimaan Tujhe Jaan Liyaa Private Secretary 1962
Dil Ki Girah Khol Do Raat Aur Din 1967
Apni Aadat Hai Sabko Salaam Karnaa Pyaar Deewaana 1972

Six songs were posted, six films represented. Over the past 10 years, four of these films have completed their run of songs – ‘Devdas’ (1935), ‘Hum Sab Chor Hain’ (1956), ‘Lala Rukh’ (1958) and ‘Raat Aur Din’ (1967).

For the remaining two films, the score card says –

‘Private Secretary’ (1962) – 4 songs posted out of total 7 listed, and
‘Pyaar Deewaana’ (1972) – 2 songs posted out of total 8 listed.

So in preparation for the Ten Year Challenge post for today, as I started to scan the remaining songs of these two films, I had to stop right at the first song that I checked, for I knew it has to be this one today. The song is a stage dance song from the film ‘Private Secretary’. The listing in the Geet Kosh is not fully informative, because the song title listed is actually the lead in verse to the song. The burden of the song comes later, and it was not apparent when I read the song title. But when I played this song – my goodness, I am amazed that a song of this caliber has been lying unnoticed for all these years. That is the reason for the urgency in my mind to post this.

This song was frequently heard on the air waves during the radio listening days, and so it is a very familiar and a favorite song from that time. After the leading verse, as soon as Lata ji starts to croon “O O O Saanwre. . .”, I just sat up straight with surprise – my God, this song, this lovely melody. Not yet posted. Hiding where all these years. And I knew it has to get posted right away.

The film ‘Private Secretary’ is produced under the banner of Radiant Movies, Bombay and is directed by Chander. The cast of actors is listed as Ashok Kumar, Jaishri Gadkar, NA Ansari, Mohan Choti, Poornima, Raja Gosavi, Neelam, Jerry, TN Sinha, Manohar Geer, Raj Kumar, Ravi Khanna, Kashi, CN Kapoor, Athawale, and Umakant. The seven songs listed are all from the pen of Prem Dhawan, and the music is composed by Dilip Dholakia. The singing voice is of Lata Mangeshkar.

The song is performed by Jaishree Gadkar on screen, as a stage performance. In the beginning of the song, we can see Ashok Kumar and Mohan Choti as part of the audience. A wonderful song and an equally wonderful performance – the song merits to be on the list of best dance songs.

Listen to this charming melody. And tell me. Did you have the same reaction as I did?
