Post No Song Title Name of the movie Remarks
8001 Mera husn lootne aayaa Chandralekha (1948) 8 songs covered out of 11 by now

We observe that four movies (out of six) whose songs were covered in the blog on this date ten years ago (on 29 April 2013) have since been YIPPEED in the blog. That leaves us with two unYIPPEED movies that are eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today (29 April 2023).

“Chandralekha”(1948) is one BTYC eligible movie today.

“Chandralekha”(1948) was produced and directed by S S Vasan for Gemini Chitra, Madras. This blockbuster big budget movie had T.R.Rajkumari, M.K.Radha, Ranjan, Sundri Bai, Yashodra Katju, L.Narayan Rao, Subbayya Pillai, V.H.Janaki, H.Krishnamurthy, B.S.Kalla, A.K.Chopra, Sundar Rao, Varalakshmi etc in it.

“Chandralekha”(1948) had 11 songs in it. Eight songs have been covered in the blog by now.

Here is the ninth song from the movie to appear in the blog. The song is sung by chorus. Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music is composed by R Vaidhyanathan.

The song is played in the background as horse riding warriors are seen racing away towards somewhere (battlefield) in perfect formation, one after the other.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

This song is the 100th song in this year under the Blog Ten Year Challenge (2013-2023). We are still in on 29 April 2023. More than eight months are still left. Lots and lots of songs (1200 to be exact) were covered in the blog in 2013 between 30 April 2013 to 31 december 2013. Many of the movies of these songs are still unYIPPEED so we can hopefully have record number of songs under BTYC in this year, breaking previous year’s record of 140 songs set in BTYC (2012-2022).

This also happens to be the 100th post in the current month of April 2023. So we continue to live up to our new year resolution of posting 100 or more songs in each month in this year. Hopefully we will continue to stick to this resolution throughout the year and even beyond.

Blog Day :

5275 Post No. : 17286

Today’s song is from the film Das Baje-1942.

The year 1942 was an eventful year for the Hindi cinema industry. The age old studio system had started crumbling and clever and ambitious directors started leaving studios to establish their own set up. Among these, the prominent were a group of disgruntled and dissatisfied artiates from Bombay Talkies, consisting of S. Mukherjee, Rai8bahadur Chunilal, Ashok Kumar, Sawak Wachha etc, who left and established a new entity named Filmistan. Then there were Mehboob Khan, A.R.kardar, V.Shantaram with their loyalists, Homi Wadia who left their parent studios and made new beginnings with their own studios. New Theatre, Calcutta lost Debki bose, P.C.barua, K.L.Saigal, K.N.Singh, Kidar Sharma etc.

C.Ramchandra, Minu mujumdar and Vasant desai became independent Music Directors. Kamal Dasgupta started his Hindi film with “Jawab”. Suraiya, hemant kumar, manna Dey, Jagmohan Su7rsagar, Nurjahan and madhubala sang their first hindi songs as Playback singers. Besides these, many new actors, singers and directors too made debuts. In all this activity, major studios like Prabhat, New Theatres, Bombay Talkies, Wadia and Sagar suffered irreparable losses, but the maximum damage was done by the exit of V.Shantaram from Prabhat Film co.

This was the beginning of the fall of the filmmaking Giant in India. When Shantaram left, a new film was about to start shooting. Shantaram’s assistant in Prabhat, Raja nene got the opportunity of independently directing the new film-“Das Baje’- a bilingual in Hindi and Marathi ( दहा वाजता in Marathi). Along with Raja nene, a child artiste Baby Shakentala also made her Debut. She was selected by Damle, one of the directors and to accommodate her in the film, an existing younger brother’s role was converted to younger sister’s role in the film. She not only became famous but even her songs , both in Marathi and Hindi also became popular.

Raja Nene was born in a small village in Konkan, on 18-9-1912. His real name was Gajanan Hari Nene. His early education was done in his hometown and he graduated from a college in Ratnagiri. He was the nephew of Vishnupant Damle, a partner in Prabhat Films. After his graduation, Damle employed him in Prabhat as an assistant Director.

Raja assisted Shantaram in the film Vasantsena-35 and Amar Jyoti-36. During the making of the film Sant Tukaram, he was shifted to the Damle-Fattelal duo as their assistant Director and he became a key figure in making that film. Subsequently, he continued with the Damle – Fattelal duo in their other ventures like Gopal Krishna-38 and Sant Dnyaneshwar-40. For the film Sant Sakhu-41, his name was included as one of the directors, along with Damle-Fattelal. In between, he also acted in the film Duniya na maane-37.

In 1942, he directed his first independent film ” Dus Baje” , a Marathi-Hindi bilingual. Meanwhile, V Shantaram, a mentor for all junior aspirants and his proteges, left Prabhat to start his own studio-Rajkamal Kalamandir. Same time, a new film of Prabhat-“Ramshastri” was given to Nene for direction. However, a group of Shantaram loyalists – Athavale, Dharmadhikari, Mukhram Sharma, Raja nene and Keshavrao Bhole – decided to leave Prabhat. The incomplete film Ramshastri-44 was completed by Gajanan Jagirdar, in addition to doing the lead role in the film. Keshavrao Bhole also completed his work before leaving Prabhat.

The entire group joined Mohan studios. After the film Taramati-45, Nene started his own company – Raja Nene Productions and made the film ” Shadi se Pehle”-1947. Nene not only acted in the film, but also directed it along with Debutant director Datta Dharmadhikari. After Rajkamal, Nene Productions was the next big production house to emerge from Prabhat Films. It was followed by Alhad Chitra of Datta Dharmadhikari.

After directing the film Lalat-47 ( debut film of actress Usha kiran), Nene turned to Marathi films, acting and directing hit films like, Patthe Baburao and Ketakichya Banat, Sant Ramdas etc. He returned to Hindi films and directed Shri Vishnu Bhagwan-51, Bhai ka pyar-51, Rajrani Damayanti-52, Lanka Dahan-52, Indrasen-52, Radha krishna-54, Pehli Tarikh-54, Hanuman Janma-57 and Gauri Shankar-58.

In between and after 1958, Nene directed only Marathi films, but acted in few Hindi films. His film Pehli Tarikh-54 was a hit film and the famous Kishore song, ” Khush hai zamana aaj pehli tarikh hai” was filmed on him only. Film Pehli Tarikh was remade in Kannada and Tamil by P. Neelkantham as Modaltedi-55. Raja Nene expired on 21-2-1975 at Bombay. He directed 16 Hindi films and acted in 14 Hindi films from 1937 to 1975. ( Ack: based on information from ” Marathi Cinema in Retrospect” by Sanjit Narwekar and Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema, Film India-Nov.45 with thanks, and my notes.)

The cast of the film was Urmila, Paresh banerjee, Vasant Thengdi, baby Shakuntala, Ganpatrao, Devraj and others. The story of the film was written by Pt. Mukhram Sharma, who used to write ” ashant ” (अशांत ) after his name. During the shooting of this film Sharmaji fell in love with a Marathi actress of Prabhat-Shanta Mujumdar and they got married. After marriage, Sharmaji stopped using the name ” Ashant ” after his name. Possibly Shantabai, his new wife, gave him Shanti !

The attraction of the film line brought many people from all over the country. Many of them had their existing professions, business or livelihoods, but they left all that but they left all that and joined the film line. Some succeeded, and some failed. Those who failed were soon forgotten and the succeeded ones made a name.

Offhand I can remember a few such cases. Actor Shahnawaz left his Army job to join films.Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar, Dr. Shriram Lagu and Dr. Mohan Agashe left good medical practice to join films. Susheela Devi Pawar, a Royal from Gwalior was B.A;B.T and teaching in High school, chose to leave it and join films as Vanmala, Chitragupt was a lecturer in Patna before he came to films. Mukund Rai Trivedi was in Mining business of the family, but joined films as a Music Director to form a pair ” Frank-Roy ” for film Gogola-1966 (after this one film he went back to his business and also became an M.P. from M.P. state). Ghulam Hyder was studying in a Dental college. In line with these and such other people, the M.D. of today’s film-Das Baje-1942, Keshavrao Bhole also left his MBBS course in its second year and joined Prabhat as a Musician.

Keshavrao Vaman Bhole (24-5-1896 to 10-11-1977) Music director born in Amravati, Maharashtra. Exposure to Western orchestras accompanying silent films prompted him to experiment successfully with orchestral compositions: ‘The tones of the instruments, their timbre and how such diverse instruments could play together without sounding atonal, engaged my mind,’ he wrote in his book Mazhe Sangeet: Rachana Ani Digdarshan (1964). First introduced piano, Hawaiian guitar and violin for Vartak’s vanguard play Andhalyanchi Shala, staged by the Natyamanwantar group (1933). The music also performed the unusual function of tying the play to a fixed running time.

Keshav Rao Bhole, who was born in Amaravati in Maharashtra, left his MBBS course halfway to join films. His first film was Krishnawatar-1932. In 1933,he joined Prabhat after Govindrao Tembe left and stayed there till 1944. His compositions rank amongst the best for Prabhat in its history and scored some of the studio’s best-known hits. For Amritmanthan, the actors rehearsed to a score played live, tuning their performance rhythm to the music. The scales were also chosen to counterpoint the actors’ speaking voices.

Bhole’s impact on performance idioms is most evident in Sant Tukaram, where Vishnupant Pagnis’s outstanding achievement owes much to the score. His pinnacle came with Marathi film ‘SANT TUKARAM”-1936. Due to its content and melodious music the film was popular in not only in Maharashtra but in far off places like Andhra,Madras,Mysore, and Bengal In Calcutta the Marathi film ran for Golden Jubilee. The film, its trick scenes and Music was appreciated in International Film Festivals also. Bhole’s next success was Duniya na Maane-1937,in which he got Shanta Apte to sing an English Song.

Here is a story about Keshavrao’s secret contribution to the success of the film Sant Tukaram-1936. One name in the cast of the film Sant Tukaram-1936, is that of Gauri. Her real name was Tanibai Dawari. She had been with Prabhat since its inception and did small roles in silent films. She was totally illiterate and could not read or write. After the advent of the Talkie films, she continued doing small roles in Prabhat films. When the film Sant Tukaram was being conceived, Shantaram started searching for an actress to do the role of Tukaram’s wife-Avali…who loved Tukaram but was sort of a shrew because she felt Vithoba bhakti was spoiling Tukaram. Suddenly Shantaram saw Gauri and he called her. Giving a copy of the script to her, he said,” you are selected to do the role of Avali. Now read the dialogues and be prepared.”

Gauri was stunned. She did not know how to react. She could not read. She was sure that now she will be exposed and removed from service, as Prabhat did not employ illiterate people. She took the script and went out of the room. Music Director Keshavrao Bhole found her in a corner weeping. When he enquired repeatedly, Gauri explained everything. Bhole pacified her and said, ‘Dont worry’. From that day onwards he taught Gauri reading and writing for 8 hours a day for 15 days. Being a sharp student Gauri picked it up very quickly, as it was a Do or Die situation for her. She did that role excellently and won laurels. Thanks to Keshavrao Bhole.

Famous singer, actress Jyotsna Bhole was his wife. He Left Prabhat with Raja Nene, Dharmadhikari et al., in 1944, working with them independently for some years.

He gave music to Krishnavatar and Sant Sakhubai-32, Amritmanthan-34, Noor-E-Yaman-35, Chandrasena-35, Rajput Ramani and Sant Tukaram-36, Duniya na mane-37, Mera Ladka-38, Sant Dnyaneshwar-40, Sant Sakhu-41, Das Baje-42, Ramshastri-44, Taramati-45, Kuber-47, Bhagya Rekha-48, Parijatak and Shrikrishna Satyabhama-51.
Today’s song is sung by Paresh Banerjee. Enjoy….

Blog Day :

5092 Post No. : 17021

Today 27th June, 2022 is the eighty-third birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman. On our blog we already have few posts coming on this occasion. However, I was looking for a song written by Majrooh Sultanpuri who had a long association with RD Burman. Also, I wish that I should share a song sung by Kishore Kumar because the songs I shared for today didn’t have any Kishore Kumar songs.

So, here I am presenting a song from the 1980 movie ‘Aanchal’. And incidentally this happens to be a song picturized on Rajesh Khanna. I think this is a ‘bonus’ song for today’s celebration.

‘Aanchal’ was directed by Anil Ganguly for Bemisal Films Pvt Ltd. It was produced by Prem Lalwani and Mohan Lalwani. It had Rajesh Khanna, Rakhee Gulzar, Rekha, Prem Chopra, and Amol Palekar, with Leela Mishra, Shammi, Dinesh Hingoo, Ranjana Sachdev, Birbal, Sarita Devi, Asit Sen, Swapan Guha, Amol Sen, Deepak, Master Ravi, Lekha Chauhan, Master Sandeep, Suresh Desai, Saukat Bharti, Jankidas, Rajkishore, Viju Khote, and others. Abhi Bhattacharya had a friendly appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Tara Shankar Bandopadhya, and dialogues were written by Ehsan Rizvi. Screenplay of this movie was written by Sachin Bhowmick. Editing of this movie was done by Waman Bhonsle and Gurudutt Shirali. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.09.1980.

This movie has six songs. Lyrics for the songs in this movie are written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by RD Burman. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, and Swapan Chakravarty had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

One song from this movie “Paise Ka Kaajal Daike Na Lo Hamri Jaan has already been discussed on the blog on 18.07.2018. This post was presented by our beloved Raja Saab and here is a brief about this movie he had mentioned in his write-up.

The film stars Kaka, Rekha, Raakhee, Amol Palekar and Prem Chopra. It’s a village-based story, where Kaka and Amol Palekar are brothers, with Raakhee married to Amol Palekar. Since Kaka is her husband’s younger brother, Raakhee treats him with great affection. Kaka too has highest regard for his bhabhi. Prem Chopra, who has a score to settle with Amol Palekar, plays mischief, creating misunderstanding in his mind about the relationship between Raakhee and Kaka. Also, doing the same to Rekha, who is in love with Kaka.

To be honest, the film picks up only in the second half – the first half is rather slow. But maybe it is a build-up to show the relationships between the characters. I was rather keen for the film to get on with the plot.

We will be discussing the details about the other songs in this movie in the future posts on the blog. Regarding the songs from this movie, I think “Bas Meri Jaan Bas. . . Maan Le Meri Baat”, “Paise Ka Kaajal Daike Na Lo Hamri Jaan“, and “Bhor Bhaye Panchhi” were well known songs from this movie. Though the overall musical score is good and other songs from this movie also needs to be listened, like the song today.

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and on screen it is Rajesh Khanna performing on this song with other artistes also seen in the picturization of this song. As mentioned above lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by RD Burman.

Let us listen to and enjoy the today’s song now …

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 153 # Rafi Saab’s ninety-seventh birth anniversary#
———————————————

Today 24th December’2021 is the ninety-seventh birth anniversary of legendary singer Mohd Rafi (24.12.1924-31.07.1980).

Much has already been said and written about Rafi Saab on this blog and elsewhere. What I will say will be nothing new, so I will not go into his biography and other details.

For me he will always be ‘a divine messenger of humanity and a divine voice’.

Today on his birth anniversary we remember him and pay our tributes. On this occasion I am presenting a song from ‘1972’ movie ‘Kaun Sachchaa Kaun Jhoothha’.

‘Kaun Sachchaa Kaun Jhoothha-1972’ was directed by Jankiram for P.S.R. Pictures, Madras. Jankiram had also done the photography of this movie.

This movie was produced by P. Subbarao. It had Vijaylalita, Jyotilakshami, Krishna, Prabhakar Reddy, Tyagraju, Ramdas, Padmashri V. Nagiyah, Lakshamichhaya, Junior Kanchana, Helen, and others.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by A.M. Samiyulla. Dialogues were written by Raj Joshi. Editing of this film was done by Kandaswamy.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 26.08.1972. That means this movie will be completing its fifty years in August’2022.

This movie had six songs written by Kewal and composed by Satyam. Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Preeti, L.R. Eswari and Madhukar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

One song from this movie have been posted on the blog. This post was presented by Sudhir ji, and it can be read in detail here. This movie ‘Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhoothha’ was a dubbed movie. The original movie was in Telugu language.

The list of the songs the Hindi version has is as given below.

SNo Title of the song Singer/s Posted On
01 Chalna zindagaani, duniya behta paani Mohd Rafi 07.03.2016
02 Dekho jawaani chham chham naache re Asha Bhonsle
03 Meri raani mat jaa, pyaar tujhe kar loon Mohd Rafi, Preeti
04 Sawaal hai kaisa mera Asha Bhonsle
05 Haay, haay, haay, haay, sun jaa Madhukar, L.R. Eswari
06 Karam nahin mit’ta, dharam nahin bikta Mohd Rafi Being discussed today

We can see from the above table that one song of this movie ‘Kaun Sachchaa Kaun Jhoothha’ has been posted on the blog on 07.03.2016. Today we are going to listen to the second song of this movie which again is a solo song sung by Rafi Saab. I had come across this song during my daily browsing of the song long back. However, this song is yet to be posted and today we are going to have it on this blog.

Let us listen to this song and remember the divine voice – Rafi Saab!

(PS: I was about to finish this article and had written these lines – ‘I wonder if the Hindi (dubbed) version of this movie is available online or elsewhere’. But when I checked online this movie is already available online. And one can watch it there.
I have only now watched the picturization of today’s song which shows the hero as a ‘robin hood type’ character and he is riding on the horse. That may remind many of the famous Hindi movie ‘robin hood characters’ riding on the horse and singing or a song playing in the background. But this song though nice, fails to create the impact like ‘jeewan mein tu darna nahin’. 😊 )

Lyrics

duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega
insaan ke iraadon ke aage
ambar bhi sar ko jhukaayega
ambar bhi sar ko jhukaayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega

hum apni lagan ke deewaane
toofaan se bhi takra jaayenge
ab jhuk na sakenge ae duniya

kuchh aur haseen kahlayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega

har har bandhan ko tod ke jab
ik jashn manaayegi duniya

insaan ko dikhaayegi duniya
ho ho ho
o o o o o
us din sabko rah rah ke mera
ye geet bahut yaad aayega
insaan ke iraadon ke aage
ambar bhi sar ko jhukaayega
ambar bhi sar ko jhukaayega
duniya ki kitaabon se ik din
mushkil ka naam mit jaayega

Hullo Atuldom

“Azaad” (1978) made its debut on the blog in 2014 with this song. The post contains details of the movie and its synopsis.

After four years, on the occasion of Dharam Paaji’s birthday I had sent this song on the blog. Therein I have stated how I came to appreciate Dharmendra the actor, the songs of his which I love etc.

I was looking for possible songs to post for Dharam Paaji’s 86th birthday. I went through all the Dharmendra movies that are on the blog; movies with one or two songs left to attain YYIIPPEEEEhood. Then I looked for popular movies of the ’80s, ’90s and later which featured our favourite actor/ star. I found numerous possible songs but decided to go back to “Azaad”. That is story of how this song find a place on the blog today.

The song is sung by Kishore Kumar, written by Anand Bakshi and tuned by RDB. We see our Dharam Paaji on a journey on Horseback in search of greener pastures, away from his hometown after he promises his bhabhi that he will mend his ways and not get into unnecessary squabbles.

Wishing a very Happy Birthday to our dearest Veeru a.k.a Dharam Paaji. May he be healthy witty and happy with all his family and close people.

Lyrics

hmmm
raaju chal raaju
raaju chal raaju
apni masti mein tu

maana ke haseen hain duniya ke ye mele
ab to hum rahenge mele mein akele
maana ki haseen hain duniya ke ye mele
ab to hum rahenge mele mein akele
jab tak na ho jaaye
apna dil beqaabu
raaju chal raaju
raaju chal raaju
apni masti mein tu
koi jiye ya mare

jag mein jo bura hai

kaanton ko hataa ke phoolon ko hum chunen

sab duniya begaani
do apne main aur tu
raaju chal raaju

apni masti mein tu
koi jiye ya mare
kya humko baabu

pariyaan ye kahaan se
chali aayin gaanw mein
aaye neend haaye zulfon ki chhaanw mein
pariyaan ye kahaan se chali aayin gaanw mein
aaye neend haaye zulfon ki chhaanw mein
hum pe na chal jaaye
in zulfon ka jaadu
raaju chal raaju

Blog Day : 4178 Post No. : 15354

Yesterday (25 december 2019) was the birth centenary of Naushad (25 december 1919- 5 May 2006). The special occasion called for a post but my internet connection let me down and that day ended up becoming a dot day- the third such day in the year.

According to my calculations Naushad had composed music for 601 songs in 64 Hindi movies.

61 out of these 64 movies are represented in the blog. The first four movies where Naushad was the music director are “Prem Nagar”(1940), “Darshan”(1941), “Maala”(1941) and “Nayi Duniya” (1942). All available songs of these movies are covered in the blog but still some songs (unavailale as of now) are not posted so these movies are unYIPPEED. After that, each and every Naushad movie beginning from “Sharda”(1942) till “Ganwaar”(1970) are already YIPPEED in the blog ! Moreover, two more movies viz “Aaina”(1974) and “Dharam Kaanta”(1982) are also YIPPEED.

The only Naushad movies (apart from the four movies of 1940s), whose songs are not fully covered in the blog are “Paakeeza”(1971), “Taangewaala”(1972), “My Friend”(1974), “Sunahra Sansaar”(1975), “Chambal Ki Raani”(1979), “Love and God”(1986), “Aawaaz De kahaan Hai”(1990), “Teri Paayal Mere Geet”(1993), “Guddu”(1995) and “Taj Mahal”(2005).

Overall 535 out of 601 Naushad compositions are already showcased in the blog.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Taangewaala”(1972). This song is sung by Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

The song is picturised as a Tanga song, with Rajendra Kumar playing the Taangewaala and driving the taanga holding a small child his arms. It is very risky, according to present day safety standards. Rajendra Kumar would get fined heavily and his tonga driver licence cancelled by traffic police if he was to operate in present day India. 🙂

This song is an appropriate song for the occasion because Rafi too had his birth anniversary on 24 december, one day prior to Naushad’s birth anniversary.

ye dilwaala sabko hi
manzil tak pahunchaata hai

manzil tak pahunchaata hai
taanga mera pyaar bhara dil
jo chaahe aa jaaye
Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye
hurr

This article is the 200th writeup of Raja in the blog.

Blog Day : 3569 Post No. : 14303

It’s been exactly five weeks since my last post here – but somehow it feels much longer. I’m reminded of that famous dialogue from Aandhi (1975) – “waise to ammavas pandrah din ki hoti hai, lekin is baar bahut lambi thi.” 🙂 These five weeks felt like five months.

One possible reason for this is that this happens to be my 200th post on this blog. So I’ve been on 199 for 5 weeks. Even Mudassar Nazar would be proud of my achievement. 🙂 Since this is IPL season, it’s also safe to say that franchisees wouldn’t exactly be falling over each other, outbidding each other to try to buy me at an IPL auction. 🙂

Not that I haven’t been nudged or reminded about this.

When I sent in my previous post, Atul told me it was my 199th and nudged me to get the 200th soon.

Peevisie’s Mom called me a while ago and reminded me of this.

One of Atul’s recent posts also nudged me (hint, hint!) to run that quick single.

And our Atulite whatsapp group also decided that it was high time.

And so I too decided today – yes, it is high time. This is unacceptable, even by Mudassar standards.

So here is the post – with due apology to everyone for this 5-week delay. And thanks to all who nudged me along the way. I needed it.

Actually, I had planned this 200th much earlier. Since I usually pick anniversaries for my posts, my first idea was Farooque Sheikh’s anniversary. That didn’t happen. Then, I’d planned for Jeetendra’s birthday. On both occasions I’d finalized the song – but, for a variety of reasons that I will not get into right now, I never got around to writing the post. No excuses though – if Atul can write up and post songs every single day, I just cannot have an excuse for taking five weeks for one post. 🙂

I see that these songs aren’t posted yet, so I can still write them up – no need for a specific occasion. In fact, the Jeetu song would be quite suitable for this post too – but I’m going with this particular one because it happens to have Moushumi Chatterjee in it too – and it is Moushumi’s birthday today. The Jeetu song can wait.

The song I’ve picked for today is an iconic song for a particular occasion – the baaraat in a wedding.

When I was very young, the song “meri pyari beheniya banegi dulhaniya” became very popular. Thanks to my name, I used to be constantly teased “bhaiya raja bajaayega baaja”.

This was in addition to another “baaraat” song for which I used to be teased – the famous “raja ki aayegi baaraat” from Aah (1953).

These were both regulars at any baaraat.

And then there was “ghodi pe hoke savaar”, today’s song.

It also became a very popular song for baaraat occasions – especially if the bridegroom was on a horse. The words suit the occasion perfectly, so it was only natural this song would play on the occasion.

“Ghodi pe hoke savaar” was not only popular then – I suspect, it’s still popular. Which is why I was very surprised to discover that it had not yet been posted on this blog. I know Atul has a category along the lines of “how come this song is not yet posted yet”. This song is the mother of all songs in that category, considering it’s almost ten years for this blog now. 🙂

In fact, this film “Ghulam Begum Baadshah” (1973) has not made an entry yet on the blog. So this is a debut for this film here. There’s a 1956 film by the same name which has songs here but, for this film, this is the first.

For me, another category that this song slips into – but is not a recognized category here – is “this song is in THIS film?”.

I’d heard this song umpteen times in my life – but never really got to know the name of the film it was from.

And then, a few years ago, I saw a film “Ghulam Begum Baadshah” (1973) prompted to me on youtube. It piqued my interest – I’d never heard of this film before, it was a 1970s film, it had Moushumi in it (I quite like Moushumi) – so I decided to give it a go.

When the prelude to the song started, I thought it sounded very familiar. And then when the song started, I was totally in this “ye gaana IS film ka hai?” mode. It was a very pleasant surprise.

It wasn’t the only one.

I remember that even the film turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Ok, I had zero expectations from it (that’s usually how I avoid disappointment :-)), but even so, it held my interest to the very end.

I remember there were scenes of patriarchy that annoyed me but what I liked most about the film was Moushumi and her role. From what I remember of her role, it had a lot of spunk.

As we know, in many movies, especially in earlier eras, the women are shown as weaker than the men. They need to be protected, they are subservient, they often don’t even have a mind of their own. They’re subdued, they’re shy. They’re not often shown as smart, thinking women.

In this film, from what I remember of it (I don’t remember the details well), Moushumi is shown as anything but weak. She gives as good as she gets, refusing to cower down to bullying. And when she is in a difficult situation, she finds her own way to get out of it, instead of depending on the male characters to solve her problems for her.

This is what I liked most about the film. And there’s a nice twist at the end too.

The film has Kumud Chugani too – always nice to see her in a film as well.

So if you haven’t watched this film – and want to watch a 1970s film – you could give it a shot. But don’t shoot me if you don’t like it – apni apni pasand. And I don’t claim to have high standards. 🙂

The song itself is by Rafisaab – and considering it’s an early 70s song, it was during his “lean” period. But even during this period, he had popular songs like this one – and “teri galiyon mein na rakhenge kadam” and “aaj mausam bada be-imaan hai”.

I think he does full justice to the song – singing it with gusto, as you’d expect on the occasion of a baaraat. The way midway in the song he pronounces “ghodi” is deliberately upbeat.

The lyrics are by Rajinder Krishan, music by Kalyanji-Anandji.

I hope you enjoy listening to this song as much as I do.

Once again, a very happy birthday to Moushumi Chatterjee. I think I’ve written a full post on her earlier – she was one of my favourite heroines in the 70s.

Whew! Got that 200th out of the way. Relief! 🙂 And thanks for tolerating me for these 200 posts.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm as far back as in 2011 and I had planned to cover this song at that time only. I do not know how this song managed to remain unposted all these years. It was lying in the drafts folder of the blog for all these days.

Better late than never. With this song, “Do Premi”(1980) makes its debut in the blog.

“Miss Frontier Mail”(1936) was produced under the banner of Wadia Movietone and was directed by Homi Wadia. The star cast included Fearless Nadia, Sardar Mansur, John Cawas, Sayani Atish, Jaal Khambata. Gulshan,  Jaidev, Master Mohammed, Meenu Cooper, Bashir Qawwal, Munchi Thoothi etc.

Mr Sadanand Kamath, our beloved inhouse HFM researcher has given some interesting information about this movie. He informs that the movie was originally named “Frontier Mail”. Frontier mail which used to run between Bombay and Peshawar was the most prestigious train of BBCI Railways. The promotional posters of the movie carried the picture of a train crash. BBCI offcials took exception to that. In order not to displease the BBCI officials, The movie makers changed the name of the movie to “Miss Frontier Mail” and carried the disclaimer that the movie was about the adventures of a lady and had nothing to do with the train.

The story of the movie, as reconted by Mr Sadanand Kamath is as following:-

The Deputy Station Master at a railway station is murdered by a masked man. He escapes from the scene just before the Station Master Maganlal (Master Mohammed) arrives. Maganlal touches the knife which has been used by the masked man to kill the deputy. The police arrest Maganlal for the murder. His daughter Savita (Nadia) and son Jayant (Jaidev) is informed by their uncle, Shyamlal (Sayani Atish) about the news of their father’s arrest.

Savita is fond of hunting, playing tennis and racing fast cars while Jayant is an amateur film maker. Soon Jayant and his friend (Munchi Thoothi) get involved in the villain’s evil design and manage to film the mask man’s gang readying to blow up a bridge. The masked man dynamites the bridge as he has been contracted to do so by a man who wants to promote his airline business. However, Shyamlal tries to implicates Sunder (Sardar Mansur), son of a railway official, for the crime.

There is also a gangster’s moll, Gulab (Gulshan) who is romantically linked first with Shyamlal and then with Kishore (John Cawas), one of the gang members of the masked man. Both Gulab and Kishore are reformed and they side with Savita and her brother, Jayant in hunting down the masked man.

Sunder has a soft corner for  Savita and rushes to help her in dealing with rail gangs and murders. He and Savita are involved in several chases culminating in a fight scene on top of a speeding train where Savita fights the gang alongside Sundar on her bare hands successfully. At last, the identity of the masked man is revealed. He is none other other than Savita’s uncle Shyamlal. Ultimately, Shyamlal is killed by the police while he is trying to escape in a plane.

This movie had four songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the blog in the past. Here are their details:-

Here is the fourth and final song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Meenu Cooper, credited as Meenu the mystic. Lyricist is not known. Music is composed by Master Mohammad.

All the four songs in the movie, including the one under discussion were picturised on the same set. The song is a light hearted song where the artist talks about his experiences of betting on horses in the race course.

I have failed to get many words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections as applicable.

With this song, “Miss Frontier Mail”(1936) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.
