Dada Burman – the senior doyen of the music directors of Indian cinema. A music director who, unlike many other music dirrctors,  maintained  consistency in his work all through his career. His fans, critics and observers of music, journalists and industry biggies – whatever they may say about his work, all agree that Sachin Da has consistently maintained a very high quality and a very high standard of his music direction work, across all his films.

Remembering SD Burman on the anniversary of his passing away – 31st October, 1975, i.e. 47 years ago.

He started his career as a singer with the Calcutta Radio Station in the late 1920s. There are some other interesting trivia about his early career which are probably not well known. That he made his debut as a singer in the New Theatres production ‘Yahudi Ki Ladki’ (1933), but the songs recorded by him were not used. They were rercorded in the voice of Pahadi Sanyal. Then in 1934, he appeared on screen in the film ‘Selima’, in which is played a role of a singer. In 1935, he made another similar on screen appearance in the Bangla film ‘Birodhi’. The same year he also sang in another Bangla film – ‘Sanjher Pidim.

Before entering the cinema world as a music director, he worked for the Bangla theatre in Calcutta, and composed music for famous plays such as ‘Sati Tirath’ and ‘Janani’. In Bangla cinema, his first film as a music director was ‘Sudurer Priye’ in 1935. In the next decade, from 1935 to 1945, he composed music for 18 Bangla films. In 1945, he moved to Bombay as the invitation of Sashadhar Mukherjee of Filmistan. In 1946, Filmistan released two films with his music – ‘Shikari’ and ‘Eight Days’. Big time success came his way the subsequent year when ‘Do Bhai’ (1947) was released. The iconic song “Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya” in the voice of Geeta Dutt became and all time great hit. And the rest, as they say, is history.

In a career that spans four decades, Sahin Da has composed music for about 110 films – both Hindi and Bangla.

Almost five decades have gone by since he bid farewell to this life. And it seems that we have not heard all of his music; that there are still more of his creations to be explored and enjoyed. As I was searching today for a song to go with this post, I stumbled upon this wonderful melody from thr 1954 film ‘Radha Krishna’. A song in the voice of Asha Bhosle, this is an exquisite piece of melody and poetry that is such a pleasing listen. After a long time I use the phrase ‘love at first listen’, as I started to hear this song for the first time, earlier in the day today.

The lyrics are wonderful poetry by Narendra Sharma. The words tell of an expected tryst between the Eternal Lovers – Radha and Krishna. The poet writes such exquisite lines – “. . .ghir ghir aayi milan yaamini, kabhi na hogi bhor. . .”. The sound of chorus is so beautifully used in this composition.

A must listen song – I am sure you will fall in love with.

5218 Post No. : 17207

On our blog so far we have 3820 songs of Lata Mangeshkar already posted. But still there are many songs of her yet to come on the blog. And if one thinks that the remaining songs must be from later years of Hindi Cinema then that is not the case.
Music lovers and our regular readers on the blog are well aware of this and when they notice such song they bring it to our attention.

Like the today’s song which is from the movie ‘Sinhaldweep Ki Sundari-1960’. Our regular reader Shri. Deepak Patwardhan ji had sent me ‘farmaaish’ for this song few months back. It has been delayed from my side to present it here. Now, trying to get back into rhythm of the blog, I take this opportunity to present a Lata Song from the above movie today on the blog.

‘Sinhaldweep Ki Sundari-1960’ was directed by Shantilal Soni for ‘Mukund Pictures, Bombay’.
It had Nalini Chonkar, Anand Kumar, Daljeet, Sapru, Sundar, Tuntun, B.M. Vyas, Jagdish Kanwal, Ameerbai Karnataki, Vivek, C.J. Pande, R.S. Dube, Sharma, V.R. Ramchandran, Polson and others.

As per information available in HFGK Vol-III (1951-1960) this movie was passed by Censor Board on 14.07.1960.

This movie has seven songs written by Bharat Vyas and composed to music by S.N. Tripathi.

Here is the list of songs this movie has.

SNo Song Title Singer Posted On
01 He ripu sanharini… maata maata tu sabki bhaagyavidhaata Manna Dey, Suman Kalyanpur, chorus
02 Gori gori chaandni chamak chameli jaisi raat Lata Mangeshkar
03 Ho been waale teen sur tere been ke Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh 28.03.2013
04 Meri preet ke geet rangeele Lata Mangeshkar

06 O mere aansoo le le jag ko muskaan do Suman Kalyanpur, chorus
07 Garaj uthha aakaash hai … aansuon ki aarti liye Suman Kalyanpur

As we can see from the above table, only one song from this movie ‘Sinhaldweep Ki Sundari’ has been posted on the blog.

Today’s song which is sung Lata Mangeshkar is the second song from this movie to be posted on the blog. Lyrics for this song are by Bharat Vyas and music is composed by S.N. Tripathi.

This song is a nice song to listen to. Only audio of this song is available.

Let us listen to the song now…

Song-Meri preet ke geet rangeeley (Sinhaldweep ki Sundari)(1960) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-S N Tripathi

Lyrics

meri preet ke geet rangeele
le gayi qismat chheen ke
aaj saaj mere dil ka toota
bikhar gaye sur been ke
khaamosh huyi meri raagini
gham ban ke dans gayi naagini
khaamosh huyi meri raagini
gham ban ke dans gayi naagini ee

taqdeer jo hamse roothhi
to pyaar ki dori tooti
kya preet thhi meri jhoothhi ee
jo phool se bulbul chhooti
piya binaa ye praan
piya binaa ye praan
tadapte jaise jal bin meen ke
aaj saaj mere dil ka toota
bikhar gaye sur been ke
khaamosh huyi meri raagini
gham ban ke dans gayi naagini

sapnon ka mahal banaaya
aasha ka deep jalaaya
toofaan ka jhonka aaya
tinka tinka bikhraaya
0 aasmaan waale
o aasmaan waale ae
sah chuke dukhde teri zameen ke
aaj saaj mere dil ka toota
bikhar gaye sur been ke
khaamosh huyi meri raagini
gham ban ke dans gayi naagini
meri preet ke geet rangeele
le gayi qismat chheen ke
aaj saaj mere dil ka toota
bikhar gaye sur been ke
khaamosh huyi meri raagini
gham ban ke dans gayi naagini

Today 26th October 2022 is the eighty-fifth birth anniversary of (born on 26th October 1937) Music Director-Singer Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

When I noticed his birth anniversary yesterday, I sincerely wished that I should give a try to send a write-up with a song for this occasion to Atul ji.

We still have many movies to present a song from, where the music of these movies is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Out of all the movies with Hridaynath Mangeshkar as music director, So far only one movie ‘Dhawaan-1981’ has been ‘Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog.

The number of Hindi movies where music is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar is not much, but still he has given some timeless classics and unforgettable songs to Hindi movies.

Today morning, I was a little bit confused as which movie I should take a song from. First I decided to pick a song from the eighties and had almost finalized the movie ‘Suabh-1982’. But later, I remember that the today’s movie ‘Chaani’ is yet to make its debut on the blog. So, I am presenting a song from this movie ‘Chaani-1977’ today to grace the today’s occasion.

‘Chaani-1977’ was produced and directed by V. Shantaram.

It had actress Ranjana making her debut in Hindi movies, and also Master Sushant Ray making his debut. They were supported by Yashwant Dev, Prem Kumar, Gauri Kamat, Durga Senjit, Arvind Deshpande, Kamini, Suhas Bhalekar, Shankar, Vinita, Hemant, Jagannath, Kandalgaonkar, B. Majnalkar, Madhumati and Sagar (another debutant in the movie).

This movie was based on a novel written by C.T. Khanolkar, which was inspired by a true of story of a girl named ‘Chaani’.

‘Chaani-1977’ was passed by Censor Board on 22.03.1977. ( This movie was also made in Marathi).

Here is a brief mentioned about this movie , which I have taken from indiancine.ma and reproducing the text as it is …

‘Shantaram intended the film to be part of New Indian Cinema’s vanguard, adapting a difficult work from the innovative contemporary Marathi writer C.T. Khanolkar. The story, written in 1970 and set on the Konkan coast features a woman born of an ‘incident’ between an Englishman and a local fisherwoman, now only discussed as a hushed rumour except by a boatman who loudly curses the girl whenever he ferries his boat across the river.’

(I have edited the next and last line from the above text which is a comment on the movie.)

Ranajna Deshmukh known by her first name ‘Ranjana’ only was the actress who played the title role in this movie. She was also a distant relative of V. Shantaram. She was a famous actress of Marathi movies.

‘Chaani-1977’ had four songs written by Bharat Vyas and composed to music by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

Today I am presenting a song from this movie which is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Only audio of this song is available so far. I guess that this song is lip-synced on screen by Ranjana.

Let us wish Hridaynath ji a very happy birthday and healthy and peaceful life today.

Today also happens to be the birthday of our beloved Atulites Raja Saab and Mahesh ji’s daughter Baby Pooja. I wish both of them a very happy birthday and a healthy, wealthy, peaceful and exciting musical life ahead …

Over to the song now…

Hullo Atuldom

At the outset a Happy Deepawali to all the followers of this blog. Today is Bali Pratipada and the holiday fervour/ fever continues. There are still some friends & relatives to be wished, gifts & sweets to be exchanged. Then there will be Bhai Dooj or Bhau Beej (as it is called in Western India) on the 27th. That will be the last of celebrations (I think) for the Diwali holidays.

We have celebrations in our Atuldom too today. We have an Atulite turning a year older. Additionally, another Atulite’s baby is growing a year older.
Here is wishing the first follower of AtulSongaDay.me a very Happy Birthday. Hope he has a enjoyable musical day & year ahead. Hope he gets back to being active here on the blog. Really miss his posts which are full of his love for Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Sahir, and everyone connected with Indian Film Music.

Also wishing the Baby of our friend from Atuldom on her birthday. All the best for her future may she achieve all that she has set her sights on. Hope she shares her father’s love for music.

Today also happens to be the birthday of the first friend in my life, the first playmate of my life. The person who loves singing, dancing & cycling and has a larger reservoir of songs (as compared to me) and is my preferred teammate when there are antakshari games in our family circles; people say we make a formidable team.

“Salaakhen” (1998) was a movie produced by Rajiv Tolani & Guddu Dhanoa. It was directed by Guddu Dhanoa, had music by Dilip Sen- Sameer Sen with Sameer as the lyricist. Abhijeet, Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal, Chitra, Hema Sardesai, Kumar Sanu, Lalit Sen, Shweta Shetty, Udit Narayan, Vinod Rathod were the playback singers used. The star cast had Raveena Tandon, Sunny Deol (who turned 65 on 19th), Anupam Kher, Deven Verma, Amrish Puri, Mohan Joshi etc. and Manisha Koirala for just a dance interlude i.e. an item number.

It was the story of a young man (Sunny Deol) who is out to take revenge on a corrupt , influential bigshot (Amrish Puri) who is the reason behind his father (Anuam Kher’s) suicide. The upright school teacher father is witness to the bigshot’s son molesting a girl and is hassled by the cops when, first, he goes to report it and then when he goes to testify in the courts. All this harassment confuses him no-end and he takes his own life. The rest of the movie goes along expected lines of any Sunny Deol movie of those times “Dacait”, “Ghayal” etc. can be examples of such movies. Of course there is Raveena Tandon too in the movie in one of her ‘arm-candy’ roles.

Today is Raveena’s 50th birthday. Here is wishing her health & happiness and success in all her endeavours with this song featuring her and Sunny Deol. The song is in the voices of Shweta Shetty and Abhijeet. Ganesh Acharya and Chinni Prakash were the choreographers used in the movie and I have a feeling that this song was choreographed by Ganesh Acharya. Shweta Shetty (a cousin of Shilpa Shetty) was a popular Indie-Pop singer in the 90s (I don’t know if she cuts albums in these times); she is the voice for Raveena Tandon.

Happy Birthday to our fellow Atulite Rajaji and daughter of another Atulite. All the best to the two of them.

Blog Day :

5212 Post No. : 17200

Slowly and steadily, and also unnoticeably, we arrive at yet another century milstone for the blog. This article is the 172th century post, or in other words post number 17200.

The previous century was achieved on 14 august 2022 (Blog day number 5140). This century is being achieved on 25th october 2022( Blog day number 5212). In other words, this century has arrived in 72 days, at a glacial pace of 1.4 songs daily.

This is the second century milestone for the blog after I retired from service in June 2022. If I thought that I would be able to devote more time to the blog post retirement, that does not seem to have happened.

There are some reasons that may have prevented me from going at a better rate. One reason is that the sheer volume of content in the blog that we have accumulated requires lots and lots of background work. I am still devoting considerable time to the blog but that is happening in ackground work, and is not getting reflected in the number of posts.

Readers who are following Blog Ten Year Challenge series will notice that we used to post as many as eight songs a day ten years ago. That was the situation when I was a full fledged employee holding a key post. Still I was able to be highly productive as far as the blog was concerned.

I used to wake up before 5 AM those days and would start working on the blog right away. Today also I wake up at the same time, but I am unable to do any blog work right away. My morning is devoted to walking my two dogs one by one between 5 AM and six AM. I did not have to do this ten years ago. My dogs those days freely roamed around on their own and came back on their own. This state of affairs continued till I retired. It is only now I am realising how much time my dogs were saving me during my working days, because I did not have to walk them daily. They did their walking, running and other excecises on their own.

Right now my residence is seeing some construction work, so for the time being I am unable to open my laptop right away because it means waking my wife up. Once the construction work is over, I will be able to keep the computer in some other room and that would allow me valuable early morning hours before my wife even wakes up. That is what I used to do doing my working days, when my computers were located in a room far away from the prying eyes of my wife. 😉 Moreover, even my wife was with me only for a few days in a year as she was herself working in a far off place.

Most articles that get covered in the blog these days are guest posts. Others are mostly Blog Ten Year Challenge posts. The idea now a days is that there should be at least one post daily and taht there should not be a DOT day in the blog. The last DOT day for the blog was on 25 december 2019 (Blog day number 4177). So we now have seen at least one post daily continously for 1035 days. Hopefully this will continue for long. There were days when I was unable to post, like for instance during the last few days of my service. Sudhir Jee has kept the blog flag high on those days by posting at least one article daily.

Personally I have not been able to really “blog” where blog means expressing my views in detail on various topics. There are lots and lots of topics where I would like to express myself in detail. In the past I have written in detail about several topics. Hopefully I will be able to achieve the same form soon enough.

While looking for a century post song, I came across this rare song from a rare movie which is a composition of artists that are hardly known to most music lovers.

The movie is “Zimbo Ki Beti”(1959). “Zimbo Ki Beti”(1959) was produced by S J Rajdev and directed by S Pal for Rajni Chitra, Bombay. This movie had Nazi, Samar Roy, Heera Sawant, Burhan, Jillani, Tuntun, Nimmo, Shashimala, Majnu, Malik, Balwant Sharma, Khursheed, Razak, Govind, Khanna, Parshuram, Gawli, Sandow etc in it.

There were six obscure songs in this obscure movies. One song from “Zimbo Ki Beti”(1959) has been covered so far.

Here is the second song from the movie. It is sung by Minu Purushottam and Khursheed Baawra. Khawar Zamaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Prem.

Only audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all whose encouragement, support and contributions in one way or the other has kept this musical bandwagon rolling on and on for more than 14 years, which is a lot for an online collaboration of music lovers. Hopefully we will see this blog keep adding many more songs and centuries to its tally in the days, months and years to come.

Blog Day :

5212 Post No. : 17199

Today (25 october 202) is the 42nd remembrance day of Sahir Ludhianvi (8 March 1921 – 25 October 1980).

We can see that 1980 saw the demise of Rafi as well as Sahir Ludhianvi. so in a way, one can say that golden era singing as well as lyrics writing suffered major blows in 1980 and that hastened the end of the Golden era of HFM. Of course, many other stalwarts of the golden era of HFM were also getting eclipsed/ sidelined/ marginalised from the scene for one reason or the other during those days.

Sahir Ludhianvi was born on a date which is now a days celebrated as Women’s day. He died on a day which is celbrated as International Artists’s day. This date is called so in honour of famous artist Pablo Picasso (25 october 1881- 4 april 1973).

As a tribute to Sahir Ludhainvi, here is a song from “Jaagriti”(1977). This movie was was produced by Vimal Bhatia and Naresh Malhotra and directed by Rajendra Bhatia for ‘Jai Films, Bombay’. It had Nutan, Vinod Mehra, Reena Roy, Master Satyajeet, Prem Chopra, I.S. Johar, Paintal and Asrani, with Krishnakant, Lily Chakravarty, Padma Chawhan, Ashoo and Junior Mehmood. They were supported by Ram Mohan, Karan Dewan, Sushil Bhatnagar, Birbal, Mounto, Keshav Rana, Madhu Apte, Brook Bond, Jugnu, Aditya Sharma, Manjeet, Salim, Rajesh, Raj Bachhan, Master Ripple, Master Ravi, Manmohan, Aarti, Ram Avtar, Narbada Shankar and Raaj Kishore. Jayshree T and Helen made special appearance in this movie.

“Jaagriti”(1977) had four songs in it. Two songs have been covered so far.

This third song from “Jaagriti”(1977) is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Only audio of the song seems to be available as of now. Avinash Scrapwala, who sent the lyrics of the song, informs that the song is picturised on Reena Roy. Master Satyajeet can also be seen in the picturisation.

As of now, only audio is available. One stanza available in video, is unavailable in the audio version.

Song-Ae mere nanhe gulfaam (Jaagriti)(1977) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Ae mere nanhe gulfaam
Meri neendein tere naam
Ae mere nanhe gulfaam
Meri neendein tere naam
Teraa bachpan paak rahe ae
Mujh par to hain sau ilzaam
Ae mere nanhe gulfaam
Meri neendein tere naam
Teraa bachpan paak rahe
Mujh par to hain sau ilzaam

Kis kaa padaa tujh par saayaa
Kis kaa padaa tujh par saayaa
Kis ne ye rastaa dikhlaayaa
Kaun tujhe is ghar laayaa
Ye ghar hai rusvaa badnaam
In galiyon ki kismat hai ae
In galiyon ki kismat hai ae
Tute gajre jhoothe jaam
Ae mere nanhe gulfaam
Meri neendein tere naam

Zakhmi saazon ki jhankaar
Zakhmi saazon ki jhankaar
Ghaayal geeton ki gulzaar
Dukhte tan ki cheekh pukaar
Aiyaashon ke khel kaa naam
In kuchon mein hotaa hai
In kuchon mein hotaa hai
Armaanon ka qatl-e-aam
Aye mere nanhe gulfaam
Meri neendein tere naam

Is basti mein zehar ghule
Is basti mein zehar ghule
Har boti roti mein tule
In galiyon ki aankh khule
Jab dharti par chhaaye shaam
So na gayaa to dekhega
So na gayaa to dekhega
Maa behnon ke lagte daam
Ae mere nanhe gulfaam
Meri neendein tere naam
Teraa bachpan paak rahe
Mujh par to hai sau ilzaam
Ae mere nanhe gulfaam
