“Zindagi”(1964) was directed by Ramanand Sagar for Gemini , Madras. This “social” movie had Vyjyanti Mala, Rajendra Kumar, Raj Kumar, Mehmood, Jayant, Jeewan, Kanhaiyalal, Dhumal, Hiralal, Master Shahid, Prithviraj Kapoor, Helen, Leela Chitnis, Mumtaz Begam, Pushpawalli etc in it.
The movie had thirteen songs in it. Ten of these songs have been covered in the past.
Here is the eleventh song from “Zindagi”(1964) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Manna Dey. It is picturised on Raj Kumar, lip syncing this song of hasrat (longing) in front of a portrait of Vyjyanti Mala.
Hasrat Jaipuri is (quite appropriately) the lyricist. 🙂 Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

It is the 8th year of my association with our Blog. I do not remember the date but it was in the month of July 2011 when I found this musical Blog. I began my formal association with the Blog by posting my first comment sometime in the last week of July 2011. It was much later I came to know that the Blog had then just completed its third birth anniversary.
Congratulation to Atul ji and his bandwagon for completing today the 11th year of the Blog. Over a period of time, our Blog has transformed into a cooperative movement to propagate Hindi film and non-film music especially of the vintage and the golden periods.
My interest in Hindi film music began during the early days of Binaca Geet Mala which used to be broadcast on Radio Ceylon every Wednesday. But it was during the late 1960s that I developed interest in the nitty gritty of Hindi film songs. I became the collector of 78 rpm gramophone records of popular as well as the then rare songs mostly of films released during 1940s to 1960s. However, by 1972-73, I had become disillusioned with my hobby for number of reasons, the main reason being the undesirable practices of a few of the record collectors and sellers.
During 1990s to 2000s, I was virtually cut off from the Hindi film music of the golden era as even my record player became irreparable and the India-made new ones were not available. The radio had become almost redundant. During this phase, I used to regularly watch TV programmes on Doordarshan (for Chitrahaar), Channel [V] and MTV. At that time, I started liking Hindi pop songs (Indipop). Those were the days when Hindi pop songs had become very popular to the extent that they were competing with Hindi film songs in terms of sales of the song albums. Among the Hindi pop singers, Alisha Chinoy, Sunita Rao, Sweta Shetty, Phalguni Pathak, Palash Sen, Diler Mehndi, Lucky Ali, Sonu Nigam and many others became very popular. The popularity of Hindi pop songs attracted some of the already well-established artists like Asha Bhonsle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Shubha Mudgal, AR Rehman, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Javed Akhtar etc. who got associated with Indipop.
After my final retirement from the service in June 2009, I again got interested in Hindi film music. It was during this phase when I came across this Blog and my interest in the Hindi film music was revived. But the most important contribution of the Blog for me was that my hobby of listening Hindi film songs got expanded to cover non-film songs and research in Hindi films and the music. The Blog has become a learning curve for me insofar as Hindi films and non-films music are concerned.
On the occasion of the 11th birth anniversary of our musical Blog, I have chosen one of my favourite indipop songs of the new millennium. The song is ‘Jahaan Ho Pyaar Ka Mausam’ (2002) rendered by the all-girls VIVA Band consisting of Seema Ramchandani, Pratichee Mohapatra, Neha Bhasin, Mahua Kamat and Anushka Manchanda. The song is written by Javed Akhtar which is set to music by Jatin-Lalit.
The song has a very thought provoking mukhda which has a universal appeal:

When I heard this song recently after a long gap, it immediately struck me that the mukhda of the song was very apt for our Blog. For me, our Blog is the place where there is an atmosphere of love, union of hearts and minds. And where everyone speaks in a language of respect.
I should give some background about the song under discussion. In 2002, Channel [V] decided to promote pop stars in India. They started the first Indian version of the International Popstars Talent Show in 2002 in which 5 girls got selected. They formed a band named as VIVA. Their first album, VIVA produced by Times Music and Channel [V] was released in June 2002 which had 8 songs, including the song under discussion. All the songs were written by Javed Akhtar but they were set to music individually by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy, Jatin-Lalit, Sandeep Chowta, Raju Singh, Kersi Lord and Ashtosh-Dhruv. The album received a very good response and in the first year itself, sales of albums crossed 5 lakhs.
VIVA Band got split within two years of its formation despite unprecedented success of its two albums. Probably, the girls in the band could not handle their sudden fame. Later, all of them pursued their solo careers in music and the related fields.
I had watched the video of the song under discussion umpteen times on TV during 2002-03. I always liked it for its meaningful lyrics and comparatively soft musical interludes than some of other Indipops.
For those who had watched the video of the song on TV in early 2000, it will be a nostalgic experience.

Missing Films of 1960s – 78

And here is the 4001st film to find its place on our blog. Thanks Atul ji, for a very interesting sojourn through a tale of years and numbers. The tales, most surely, is not yet done with. So many more chapters are still to be written, and I am sure there is still a ton of surprises that are waiting in the shadows.
As the years progress, it is to be expected that the number of people interested in this music form will be lessening. Maybe so, but the experience so far has been that the interest in this music form continues to retain the attention of music lovers. Their numbers may be reducing through a natural process, but the music is continuously attracting new followers. Let me mention a few very interesting developments which are very recent.
When digital music arrived on the scene, it took the world by storm. Every creator of music, every producer of music items made a beeline for the CDs and the digitally converted and compressed formats. Everything that is anything in music, well almost, is now available in mp3 and other digital formats, with a greater ease of storage and sharing. However, the aficionado listeners, having spent a lot of time with digital music are probably beginning to miss the fidelity of the analog recordings – of the vinyl records and the coated plastic tapes. As we all know, digitization is basically a process to slice the stream of music into tiny packets and store them in digital formats. This slicing process (called sampling), however fine tuned and precise it may be, still leads to a loss of content. When the digital sampling happens, and packets are created, it does drop out minute fractions of audio stream in between the packets. The resulting output may get subjected to further such process, as folks try more digital processes to ‘clean’ the sound and to tweak the different frequency ranges to their personal preferences. Every time such a transformation process is applied to a stream of music, it loses some fraction of its original content. I have been part of listening sessions wherein the differences between the analog audio tracks and their digitally transformed versions, have been demonstrated. With some surprising differences.
In recent months and years, there has been a slowly progressing turnback towards the analog sound once again. In Europe, the music companies have started pressing vinyl records once again, and we are seeing more and more of them in the market. Even many latest Hindi films are releasing their music on LPs once again. Just go to music stores, and to the online stores, and today, you can buy a much larger selection of latest music on LPs than maybe 10 or 15 years ago.
In the US, there is a spurt in the demand of original music tracks on 78 rpm records, and their market is really going up. Although I have not yet heard about a return back to 78 rpm pressing factories. But who knows, the value economics may still turn the tide in that direction.
In India, besides the music of newer Hindi films coming on LPs, there is another move coming up, towards re-releasing the available earliest music of the 1900s to 1940s on LP records. One of the factors is that majority of the music of that period is now technically out of copyright ownership status and is in public domain. I am aware of at least on such enterprise who are working to bring back to life, the music of the likes of Gauhar Jaan and Janakibai, and release the available collections in LP format. I have a feeling this will trend is only going to grow over the years, and we should be seeing more players come into this market. There is a ton of non-film music that is still available in 78 rpm format that is waiting for a second life. Digital is all well, but listeners are now returning to the gramophone.
In an interesting conversation just last month, I got this surprise news that some music companies are working to bring back the cassette tape into the market once again. The purity and the fidelity of the sound is once again the driving force behind this renewal. Over the decades, the research on the different storage media and formats, has established that the original media formats continue to be the safest, the most reliable and the most enduring. The life span of celluloid and plastic tapes (audio and VHS) has proven to be longer lasting than CDs and hard disks. Of course the caveat is that they are stored in proper conditions. The well stored celluloid films from the late 1800s are still going strong, much better than the VHS tapes, and which in turn are proving to be much longer lasting than DVDs and hard disks.
I will turn this detour into the technical aspects of media storage, back to where I had started from. That there still are a ton of surprises that are probably waiting in the shadows. Let me bring up another very interesting aspect of this discussion – the collections that are sitting with private collectors. Yes, there are many a sizeable collections of records that are in the possession of private collectors. With the passing of years and the intervention of natural processes, a number of these collections are changing hands and getting redistributed. These collections, for decades, have been religiously guarded and kept ultra safe for private listening only. With passage of time and change of guard (ownership thru inheritance), and for lack of interest on the part of the inheritee, these collections are now seeing light of the day. Knowledgeable collectors are avidly pursuing such opportunities to take a pick of some very well preserved and very rare recordings. A very interesting aside here is that collectors in Pakistan are also in the fray, and they are making a good harvest. As per comments made in discussions in music collector circles, in good probability, there are more 78 rpm records now in Pakistan than here in India. And that is because the Pakistani collectors seem to be keeping much better tabs on such movements of private collections than their Indian counterparts.
My hope and my expectation is that in this process of collections changing hands and moving to different owners, we may see some more of unheard, unlisted and unexpected recordings come out into public domain. Gosh, who knows what we may still encounter as the search brings up more and more hitherto unavailable items into the open.
Coming to the 4001st film – a very obscure and unfamiliar name – ‘Ek Surat Do Dil’ from 1968. Except for the listing in the Geet Kosh, I have no other information traceable, for this film. This is a film produced in Calcutta, under the banner of Kashi Alok Chitram. There is no information available about the actors or producer/director of this film. The Geet Kosh lists eight songs for this film. It appears as if only one record has surfaced in the public domain so far, and that seems to be the only source of information available. The names of the singers, songwriters and the music director seem to have been taken from the record label itself. The name of the music director is Bijan Pal. This name appears in the Geet Kosh only for this one film. And that’s it. Same is with the songwriter – Ramji Singh. A completely unfamiliar and obscure name, appearing in the Geet Kosh for this one solitary song.
Aha, the singer names are more familiar – Subir Sen and Aarti Mukherjee. The tune and the arrangement is very atypical. The sound makes one feel that this tune is heard somewhere before, but I cannot place anything specifically.
4001st film makes its debut here today. Let us take a quick look at the 1968 numbers. As per Geet Kosh, there are 72 films plus one Bhojpuri film. Of the 72 Hindi films, 66 films are already represented on our blog. This is the 67th film to come on board. That leaves 5 more to get – I think we will get to see at least a couple of more films from this year.
And yes, btw, 1968 is a very interesting and special year for our blog. Can you guess? 🙂

1971 – the turn of a decade, that took away, and was destined to take away, many things that were loved and prized in the industry.
The 1960s ended; and with that, an era came to close. An era, when music and melody ruled supreme in Hindi films. Shades of things to come had already started to appear in this decade. And the transition would be sort of complete by the time the world turned into the 1970s.
Connecting this thought with the turn of that decade and some of the people connected with the film that we are bringing in to Yippeee land tonight.
1971 – it was the year when Jaikishan passed away. I remember that issue of Filmfare where this news was announced. I would be too young to know anything much about the music and the music makers of Hindi films, and Jaikishan was just another name to me at that time. All the details and their significance would fill in many years later. That day, that issue of Filmfare, the one thing that stuck to my mind was – there is so little color in this issue, so much black and white it is. Just 41 years – not an age to go. But then, as always, our arguments and desires stand nowhere in this arena.
1971 – and the closure of the young baby faced flamboyance of the Golden Boy of the Sixties. Yes, Shammi Kapoor. Having blasted through the decade with an average of almost 3 musical hits of his own peculiar genre every year, the baby face was getting puffy, as was the midriff. 1971 was the time that he bade farewell to the lead roles and after the release of ‘Andaaz’, ‘Jaane Anjaane’, ‘Preetam’ and ‘Jawaan Mohabbat’ that same year, the next that we see him is three years later – 1974, as Dhoopu, the boisterous owner of the ‘Dhoop Chhaon’ café, all stacked with a beard on his face and suspenders to hold up his pants. There was this one exception though – the film ‘Chhote Sarkar’ with him in the lead role opposite to Sadhna, was released in 1974. But that we know was a much delayed release of a film from mid 1960s, on account of Sadhna’s health problems.
1971 – the perky and the chirpy Sunita of ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966), was still being readily cast opposite to the newer crop of heroes – Jeetendra and ‘Caravan’ (1971); Rajesh Khanna and ‘Aan Milo Sajna’ (1970); Navin Nischol and ‘Nadaan’ (1971); Vijay Arora and ‘Rakhi Aur Hathkadi’ (1972) et al. But these releases were also interspersed with other screenplays where Asha is one of the two pairs in the film, obviously the elder one – ‘Samadhi’ (1972), ‘Heera’ (1973), ‘Anjaan Raahen’ (1974), ‘Zakhmee’ (1975) et al; the transition successfully moving towards senior roles, undoubtedly.
Many a facet of an old order changed or were changing when 1971 turned on. Through the rest of the decade, we would see the passage of oh so dearly loved legendary singers – Mukesh, Rafi Sb. The color of Hindi film music would be changed. . . forever.
‘Jawaan Mohabbat’ – a film to be remembered, not just for the good music – some of its songs are so readily recall-able as listening favorites on the radio, but also as the phasing out of two very attractive leading artists who had ruled the industry top line for the entire decade of the 1960s. Asha had her debut opposite to Shammi Kapoor in the 1959 film ‘Dil Deke Dekho’. The two would be paired again as love birds three more times during the next twelve years – ‘Teesri Manzil’ in 1966, ‘Pagla Kahin Ka’ in 1970 and the Yippeee film of today – ‘Jawaan Mohabbat’ in 1972. ‘Jawaan Mohabbat’ – it was about young hearts in love. But in 1972, the future of these young hearts was all but moving to senior elevations in the screenplay.
The film is produced under the banner of Rupanjali Films, Bombay and is directed by Bhappi Soni. The cast of actors of this film is listed as Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Balraj Sahni, Rajendra Nath, Nirupa Roy, Pran, Shashikala, Dhumal, Raj Mehra, Madhavi, Krishan Dhawan, Kumud Tripathi, Baby Sarika, Mansaram, Ravikant, Sujata, Madhumati, Daisy Irani, Madan Kenny, and Vimal Chadha.
The seven songs of this film are shared amongst three writers, with Hasrat Jaipuri leading the honors with five songs and Rajendra Krishan and Shailendra doing one song each. Today’s final song of this film to find its place on our blog, is a solo sung by Asha Bhosle. From the words and the style of singing, it appears to be a song of enticement. A song that would most likely be performed on screen by someone like Helen. However, not seeing her name in the list of actors, my guess is that this song is performed by Shashikala.

The song found me, literally, and bowled me back into my childhood, into the radio listening days, and this seldom heard lullaby that simply takes you into a dreamland. One of those songs in which the words, the music and the rendition comes together a such a perfect blend that listening to it, the world disappears, and for a while it is just yourself with the song and the music.
I was actually planning another 1960s film for debut and was searching online for posted songs for a film that I had identified. Without any preamble or focused thought, I just stumbled into this song. Nothing else struck me, except the first five words, that resonated with a long dormant memory somewhere deep in time. And without a notice, this song was upon me.
The film is lost and forgotten. I myself have not seen it. Actually when I heard this song originally, I had no clue as to the film or other details. It is only today that this connection is made. The film is ‘Daak Bangla’ from 1974. A film that has been produced and directed by Girish Ranjan. This is one of the new wave cinema that was starting out in the early to mid 1970s. The star cast is listed as Simi Garewal, Shubhendu Chatterjee, Nitin Sethi, Geeta Siddharth, Bhagwan Sahu, Ramesh, Lalita Kumari, Rasheeda Thakur, Satyabhan Sinha, Gunaji, Shriniwas Tripathi, Master Neelabh Kaul, Master Prem, Baby Aparna Mudgal, Prabhat Kumar, and Iftekhar.
The film has just two songs, both come from the pen of Anjaan. This song being a lullaby, the other song, from the words, seems like a folk song, in the voice of the same singer. Music is by Shyam Saagar. When I first read this name, I thought I am familiar with this music director. Our dear Bharat ji has posted a few non-film songs of Suman Kalyanpur, composed by him. But when I went in to check, it turns out that the music director whose song are posted by Bharat Bhai, his name is Shyam Sharma. So the music director of this wonderful soothing lullaby makes his debut on our blog also. As I checked the Geet Kosh, I find Shyam Saagar’s name appear in a few more films in the 1970s.
The singing voice is of Suman Kalyanpur. When I first located this song, I was tempted to hold back this song for her birthday, but on checking the anniversaries list, I find that we have just passed her birthday on 28th Jan. And so I decided not to wait for 2019 for this wonderful song to come board.
The song starts off as a lullaby, and then it also transforms into a song of regretful past. A lonely poignancy takes over the emotions as the song proceeds. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to please add some more information, if available, about the film story, and this song.
The recording is a little skippy, but I am able to piece together all words, checking back and forth across the lines that get repeated. However, there is one line, indicated by ((?? ?? ?? ??)) in the lyrics, which I have not been able to decipher. It is three or four words, and I could not make them out. I request other readers and listeners to please help decipher this line.
A wonderful heart warming song, sung so smoothly. It seems to flow over the senses like slow moving honey. I have simply fallen in love with this song all over again. 🙂

Moving ahead with the next instalment of this series. Picking up next letter ‘इ’, I bring to the blog this wonderful favourite song, which has become a rarity these days. I could not find this song online. Another collector in his own channel has, with deliberation, posted a very short clip of this song. I can see comments from other listeners, requesting for posting the complete song. But of course, some people, you know. . .
The song is from the film ‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’ from 1962. The film is produced under the banner of Roopvani Films and is directed by Vasant Painter. The cast of actors includes Mahipal, Indira, Heeralal, Ratnamala, Pal Sharma, SK Shukla, Baby Shobha, Kalpana, Mohan Choti, Arun, and Polson amongst others.
Only four songs are listed for this film. The songs are written by Qamar Jalaalabaadi and the music direction is by Sudhir Phadke.
In this song, the voice accompanying Rafi Sb’s, is of Asha Bhosle. The song has such an endearing flow, and when it comes to end after two antaraas, it seems almost abrupt. It builds into such a comfortable listen that, when it ends, the feeling it leaves behind is – ‘it ended too soon, there should be more’. Simple words, simple melody, rendered with deliberate softness and slowness. What a lovely song which is full of sadness of separation. Very touching.

I am an Atulite and I am proud of it. It is an honor to be associated with a blog that drips pure love of music. Like almost all Indians I love Hindi film music. But I cannot claim to be knowledgeable about it. I do know many songs but that is not a qualification. There are thousands of songs out there, many of which have fallen into oblivion. It is the die-hard music lovers that keep track of these songs and chase them with an assiduity that would make Sherlock Holmes feel jealous.
I am amazed when some of my friends are able to name the movie, singer, lyricist and music director as soon as the song is mentioned. Some Atulites could also tell you charming little stories behind the making of each song. Delving here, I have discovered gorgeous songs that not much known but are as precious as Koh-i-Noor.

The 1986 film, ‘Trikon Ka Chotha Kon’, was produced and directed by Madhusudan. The main actors in the film were Vijayendra Ghatge, Swaroop Sampat and Priyadarshani, who formed the triangle of the story. The film had 3 songs, one each written by Mahadevi Varma, Shahryar and Maya Govind, and were set to music by Jaidev. One of the songs, “Dil Dhadakne Ki Aawaaz Ki Khaamoshi“, a duet by Bhupinder and Peenaz Masani and penned by Shaharyar, and another solo “Kiya Piya Pe Kya Jaadoo“, by Chhaya Ganguli penned by Maya Govind are already showcased on this musical blog.
