5326 Post No. : 17460

The other day when this song from the film Takshak(1999) appeared in the blog, it invoked memories of another film song of the same actors, a similar dance song, where Tabu is dancing with a group of girls, in day light this time. The song is from the film “Vijaypath”(1994), already posted in the blogAaiye aapka intezaar thhaa.

This is the only song to appear here. But this movie had other songs which were more popular, and one song became a controversial one. My own favourite song is this song filmed in outdoors, near a magnificent waterfall, parts of the song are filmed at the famed location of Vrindavan Garden in Mysore, which was as common location as Kashmir. It could be more common due to it being in south where more and more films were being made. Shooting for lots of hindi films produced by filmmakers from Mumbai were also largely done in Madras, Hyderabad etc.

The song in question is a romantic song tastefully composed by Anu Malik, and filmed on the same two actors, Tabu and Ajay Devgan. This was early on in both of their film career. Tabu’s first movie with Sanjay Kapoor, made by Boney Kapoor got delayed by several years. As artists both Tabu and Ajay Devgan have come a long way from those early years. Both have won laurels, recognition, and awards. Ajay Devgan was just another star kid, a small star’s kid, launched as action hero cum angry young man. His father being a fight master, he was showcased as a fight and stunt Hero with a soft heart and tendency for romance. He also had to do the song and dance routine with heroines. His movies did well mainly with Kajol, or they turned out to be well. I remember films like “Dil hi to hai” and “pyar to hona hi thha”. After the release of “Kuchh Kuchh hota hai”,Kajol and Ajay Devgan got married. Kajol stopped working for a few years. Making sporadic come backs, in Karan Johar’s films and Ajay Devgan’s home productions.

In this regard, I also remember an article in a film magazine, which gave detailed forecast about the career and personal life of some of the top leading actresses of the time. I remember reading about Tabu and Rani Mukherjee, and the life and career of these two are predicted accurately. Predictions, about careers is understandable, but personal life and life’s struggles, hurdles, how could anyone predict? and they turned out to be very close to what happened to them in general. Rani Mukherjee is a recluse now, just like her husband Aditya Chopra. Both Rani Mukherjee and Tabu were ambitious and serious about their careers, and they got their name and fame, in the film industry. Tabu is active in films and OTT, also. Notable film in recent times is “Drishyam’ and its sequel, which had both Ajay Devgan and Tabu in pivotal characters, giving performances of critical acclaim.

Ajay Devgan’s remarkable films are ‘Zakhm” and ‘Hum Dil de chuke sanam”. I have other songs filmed on him, which I plan to post. But a lingering memory from “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, of a scene, where Ajay Devgan sings “Chingari koyi bhadke to saawan usse bujha de”. I personally like all the songs of ‘Amar Prem” barring this one. And that scene affirmed my not liking the song. People sing and remember many RDB-Kishore-Rajesh Khanna songs, but no one goes to touch this one.

Here is the song, written by Zameer Kazmi, 8 minutes long, for only 3 stanzas, but absorbing one. The singers are Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu. The song talks of “mulaquat”, an interesting word in Urdu which means a magnitude of things. For the time being, I will suffice to say that it means, a meeting, an encounter, a surprising coming across, what and what not. Appropriately, there is a restaurant on the main street of a popular weekend destination for Mumbaikars named “Mulaaquat”. I personally do not know of any other place named such.
I have wanted to post this song for a long time now. So here is it, and I have hummed this one to myself many a times, visiting that restaurant.

Hullo Atudom

“Main Khiladi Tu Anari” (1994) was a normal masala- action- emotion- comedy filled movie. It was directed by Sameer Malkan, produced by Champak Jain for Venus Records and Tapes. Dialogues were by Kadar Khan, story by Sachin Bhowmick, lyricists were Anwar Sagar, Maya Govind, Rahat Indori, Rani Malik, Zameer Kazmi and Hasrat Jaipuri. Anu Malik was the music director. It had Shilpa Shetty (in a double role) with Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Raageshwari, Shakti Kapoor, Beena, Mukesh Khanna, Shiva, Johnny Lever, and Kadar Khan in the cast. The movie was largely borrowed from the 1991 Hollywood movie ‘The Hard Way’ and some reviews of MKTA said (and I quote) ‘it was a notch above the original because of the presence of one of India’s biggest action stars, martial artist Akshay Kumar’; comparing his martial arts skills to Jean-Claude Van Damme and also praising his stunt work, and concluding that it “is a fun action-comedy” film. It was the second release in 1994 of the Akshay Kumar- Saif Ali Khan duo, the other one being ‘Yeh Dillagi’. It was also Akshay Kumar’s fourth success for 1994 others being ‘Mohra’, ‘Suhaag’ and ‘Elaan’ (all of them being multi-hero movies).

The story involves two brothers -Mukesh Khanna and Akshay Kumar; imaginatively called Arjun and Karan- who are cops. They have a sister – Raageshwari (Shivangi)- who is an ardent, crazy fan of movie star Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan) Then there is the drug dealer- gangster Goli (Shakti Kapoor) whose mistress is the cabaret singer Mona (another unique name 🙂 ). Mona is pumped off by Goli’s henchman (Shiva) when Goli comes to know that she is going to testify against him, and in protecting Mona Inspector Arjun also is killed. Now Karan has only one objective- to book Goli and avenge his brother’s killing. He seeks the help of Basanti -a street dancer who is the replica of Mona (Shilpa Shetty). For this, he has Deepak Kumar masquerading as someone from China Town and transporting Basanti to Goli’s gang with the age-old explanation of Amnesia after falling on the rocks and injury to head etc. Then many things occur in the course of the movie reaching its climax. In between all this, Deepak Kumar falls in love with his fan and Karan’s sister Shivangi- after all she also needs to sing a song no?

For today’s post we are going to have the song that Deepak Kumar and Shivangi sing to proclaim their love; in the voices of Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik. This song is one that I have always liked. Only recently I discovered that this one is from the pen of Hasrat Jaipuri: writer of the classics ‘ichak dana bichak dana’; ‘bhanwre ki gunjan hai mera dil’; ‘budtameez kaho ya kaho jaanwar’; ‘yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho tum’; ‘nain so nain naahi milao’; ‘Baat baat mein rootho na’— oh so many songs of his which I have been hearing, listening, humming, singing all along.

This lyricist who was a poet in Urdu and Hindi was a Filmfare award winner for ‘baharo phool barsaao mera mehboob aaya hai’ and ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana’ (my personal all time favorite and motto of life). Cannot resist mentioning the lines in ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana’: ‘hanste gaate jahaan se guzar, duniya ki tu parwaah na kar, muskuraate huye din bitaana, yahaan kal kyaa ho kisne jaana’.

Hasrat Jaipuri was born in Jaipur as Iqbal Hussain in 1922 (would this be his centenary year?) His education till middle school was in English medium and there after his maternal grandfather tutored him in Persian and Urdu. He began writing verses in his youth around the time when he fell in love with a neighbourhood girl named Radha. This has been the most widely talked-about anecdote in the entertainment industry and how this poem was used by Raj Kapoor in his 1964 film ‘Sangam’ as ‘yeh mera prem patra padhkar’.

As we can see from the above sample, from his long association with films (1949- 2004), it was a mixed-bag of songs, written by Hasrat Jaipuri, that are ever popular. Today, it is 23 years since his passing and we are remembering him with this song from MKTA which is making its debut.

Today’s song, like the previous song of “Jurm”(1990) discussed by me, is from a very recent movie ‘Criminal-1995’. The movie made its debut on the blog on 05.09.2008, with its beautiful romantic song ‘tu miley dil khile aur jeene ko kya chaahiye’. After that no song of this movie has been discussed so far.

Today after a gap of ‘4580’ days (breaking earlier record 😊 ‘4579’days) we are going to listen to the second song of this movie in the blog. Like others I was also not aware of the other songs of this movie except its song ‘tu miley dil khile aur jeene ko kya chaahiye’.

‘Criminal-1995’ was directed by Mahesh Bhatt (like ‘Jurm-1990’). And very rightly he first directed ‘Jurm-1990’(crime) and then moved on to ‘Criminal-1995’. (However, on our blog we first discussed ‘Criminal’ on 05.09.2008 and the ‘Jurm’ on 12.09.2008 😊 then in 2008).

Let us now move to the credits of this movie ‘Criminal-1995’.

As mentioned above it was directed by Mahesh Bhatt for ‘Vishesh Films’. It was produced by Mukesh Bhatt. It had Nagarjuna, Manish Koirala, Ramyah Krishnan, Laxmikant Berde, Johny Lever, Beena, Zaheer, Nasser, Sharad Babu with Gulshan Grover and Ajit. They were supported by Palav Vyas, Gurbachan, Mukesh Pandey, Vishweshara Rao, Jenny, Ravi Kiran, Dharmavupuru, Devdas Kankla and others. (Wikipedia mentions this as the last movie of actor Ajit.). Trishna made a guest appearance in this movie.

Screenplay of this movie was written by Sainath and dialogues were written by Jay Dixit. Editing of this movie was done by Sanjay Sankla.

It was passed by Censor Board on 21.07.1995 with restricted viewing certificate i.e., with ‘A’ certificate. This movie is said to be inspired by ‘The Fugitive-1993’ (an American movie) and was first made in Telugu in 1994 and later on in Hindi in 1995. Later it was dubbed and released in Tamil too.

This movie had eight songs (including ‘tu miley dil khile’ in three versions) written by Indeewar. Music for this movie was composed by M.M. Kreem.

Today we will listen to a song sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik (as per ‘wiki’ and the YT link) and performed on screen by Nagarjuna and Manisha Koirala and 😊 Nagarjuna and Ramyah.

As mentioned above I mainly associate this movie with its song ‘tu miley dil khile aur jeene ko kya chaahiye’ only, so I was not aware about the other songs of this movie. And I have so far not watched this movie too.
While writing about today’s post, I checked other songs of this movie and I found today’s song somewhat familiar (maybe I had heard it during those days) when I was staying at Kota (Rajasthan).

let us now enjoy the music of ‘nineties’ and listen to this song …

I would request knowledgeable readers who have watched this movie to throw more light on the movie and its songs.

Hullo Atuldom

We are on the last date of the first month of the 21st year of the 21st century.

January happens to be a cold month in the northern hemisphere of the earth. And India is in the middle of having winter which is characterized by fog, mist, cold winds etc depending on the Latitude that one resides on. When I used to be in Mumbai, the closest I came to experiencing ‘Sardi’, ‘Thandi’ etc was in the last week of December or first week of January. That too in the morning hours, till about 8 o’clock, then the thermometer would read round about 27 and 30 degrees Celsius during the day. I don’t remember seeing fog or mist there, but I had different climatic experiences once we shifted to Bangalore. I have seen all winter related features which last from November to January end with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees etc. Now in my current station, which is in the midst of lots of greenery and away from the hustle bustle of city-life, though the temperature did not touch 10 degrees on any day, we have been experiencing thick fog, cold winds, cold floors, etc.

All this talk of winter and cold climate, in addition to sharing pictures of fog with friends and family reminded me of a whole set of songs:- ‘jab chali thandi hawa’, ‘thandi hawaa yeh chaandni suhaani’, ‘thandi hawaa kaali ghaata aa hi gayi jhoom ke’, ‘thandi hawaayen lehraake aayen’, ‘thandi thandi hawaa mein dil lalchaaye’, ‘mujhko thand lag rahi hain’ etc etc.

The songs that I have mentioned are all popular numbers from their times. But the movies of the new century are no different. They also have songs where the different characters are reacting to cold climates with lots of guts- it takes a lot of guts to shoot these songs in cold climates, with snow etc for added effect and in costumes that are of the thinnest fabric possible like chiffon, lace etc. (Possibly the only climate appropriate dressing was Saira Banu in ‘Junglee’ and some other heroines of the ’60s and Hema Malini in a few movies of the ’70s, recently I re-saw “Dost”.) For further enhancement of the scene we may even see short dresses with long boots. My sympathies with all the female actors who have done those songs and scenes. And what do the male actors wear in such songs- long coats, mufflers, gloves etc.

In the build up to this post I recalled a 23 year old song. This song was shot in the cold climes of Australia. I had mentioned this movie to fellow-atulites, on our WhatsApp group last week, when the India- Australia cricket series was on. The uniqueness about this song is the heroine is dressed in climate appropriate clothes and we have the hero trying to be MANLY and showing of his biceps etc in half-jacket and jeans. I also read the heroine reminiscing about how the actor was shivering during the shoot.

I am talking of Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol. The movie was “Soldier” which was released in 1998. It was produced by Ramesh Taurani of Tips Records and directed by the director-duo: brothers Abbas-Mustan. It had Anu Malik as music director and Sameer was the lyricist. It was the third highest grossing album of 1998 behind “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Dil Se”.

This was Preity Zinta’s debut movie though she had signed “Kya Kehna” before this. “Dil Se” and “Soldier” have billed Preity Zinta as debutant; Preity had a supporting role in “Dil Se”. She was born in Shimla on 31st January. So today is her Birthday. Last I had written a post for her birthday was when she turned 40.

She has taken a sabbatical from acting a few times since 2009 for the sake of her IPL team. She has married her long-time American partner in 2016. In her career of almost 25 years, she has acted with all the top actors of the ’90s and later years. She has also acted in a movie with Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor where her character was negative and Schizophrenic. She was praised for her portrayal of the character. She also appeared alongside The Big B in an English language film that was directed by Rituparno Ghosh “The Last Lear” in 2007, this was a film-inside-a-film drama. She has also played the traditional glamorous actress in movies. She has shared screen space with top actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherjee etc too.

Today’s song is to wish Bobby Deol too, even if belatedly for his birthday which was on 27th, he turned 52. Born as Vijay Singh Deol into the film industry as the youngest child of Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur. He first faced the camera when he was 5 or 6 year old as the baby Dharam in “Dharam Veer” (1977). His first adult role was in “Barsaat” (1995) where another star-child Twinkle Khanna made her debut. He has one more “Barsaat” (2005) in the list of his films. He has appeared in a few mutli-starrers and also shared screen space with his father and brother in a few of their home productions. The “Yamla Pagla Deewana” series was good to see due to the Deols even if the story was lame, tame or weak. It is always entertaining to see the Deols.

The series of “Dheere dheere songs” has been in the making since May 2019 starting with this post. But nothing to worry about, as I am keeping track of these posts and will give a recap in the final post of the series.

Next song in this series is this multiple version song from the film Phool aur Kaante- 1991. The music director are the duo Nadeem Sharavan, with their trusted team member Sameer being lyricist. Sameer holds the records for having written highest number of film song. The singers are Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik.

Myswar.com has listed three versions of the song, a duet and Alka Yagnik solo of “Dheere dheere pyar ko badhaana hai” and a sad duet version with slight change in words of mukhda “dheere dheere hausla badhaana hai”. I was not able to find the Alka Yagnik solo, so the lyrics and links are given for the happy and sad duet versions.

Two songs of this film are posted 10 years apart in the blog 2009 & 2019:

Song Date posted
Tumse milne ko dil kartaa hai 11 June 2009
Maine pyaar tumhi se kiya hai 11 June 2019

Actually this song already posted in the series is inspired by Joyce Sims’ “Come into my life” (1987). On first hearing, the similar things between the songs are the similar words of “meri zindagi mei naana” and “come into my life”, plus the same guitar interlude at the beginning of both songs. But some work on the part of lyricist and music director is definitely involved in creating a lovely Indian sounding song. Aashiqui was in 1990, and this movie “Phool aur Kaante” was in 1991. Come to think of it, this “dheere dheere” is having a similar tune to the Aashiqui song.

Dheere dheere se meri zindagi mein aana
Dheere dheere se dil ko churaana

Dheere dheere pyaar ko badhaana hai
Hadd se guzar jaana hai

“Phool aur Kaante” was Ajay Devgan’s debut film and Madhoo was the heroine. The song’s both versions are picturised on them. I know that I have seen this movie at Bandra’s “Gaiety” cinema. But to recollect the actual happenings in the story is another thing. I visited the imdb page to get snippets of story etc. so can’t say it was a memorable film. And no, they haven’t translated the name of this movie to “Flower and Thorns” 🙂 🙂 .

itna pyaar doonga tujhe
ae mere sanam
ab na koi gham hoga
na ye pyaar kam hoga
saathi mere mujhko tere sar ki hai kasam

ek dooje ko aazmaana hai
hadd se guzar jaana hai
dheere dheere pyar ko badhaana hai
hadd se guzar jaana hai

main akela kya karta
aise hi aahen bharta
tere pyaar ke liye tadapta umr bhar
jaane kya main kar jaati
yoon tadap ke mar jaati
bin tere bhala kaise kat’ta ye safar

tere liye mar ke bhi dikhaana hai
had se guzar jaana hai
dheere dheere pyaar ko badhana hai
hadd se guzar jaana hai

tera chaand sa mukhda
tu jigar ka hai tukda
tu humaare sapnon ki jheel ka kanwal

jaan se tu hai pyaara aankhon ka tu hai taara
bin tere jiyenge ab hum na ek pal
sab kuch tujhpe hi lutaana hai
hadd se guzar jaana hai

dheere dheere pyaar ko badhana hai
had se guzar jaana hai
mujhe bas tujhse dil lagaana hai
hadd se guzar jaana hai

ho o
hadd se guzar jaana hai
haan
hadd se guzar jaana hai

Hullo Atuldom

We all have some song that occasionally comes to the forefront of our memory. Then we keep playing it in our head as if on LOOP. Very often we are stuck at the mukhda itself. And forget to pay attention to the song as a whole.

Today’s song is one such song which keeps coming up in my mind’s playlist every now and then. I knew who the actors involved in it are. But didn’t know other details like who the lyricist and music director were? I just knew that it was from the 2001 released Rahul Rawail directed “Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi”.

This was one of the movies that gave the evergreen-lover boy Rishi Kapoor a change of image. He played a father to grown up daughters (twins played by Kajol). He was the divorced husband of Rati Agnihotri. He is brainwashed and kept permanently in a drunken stupor by his step-sister (Mita Vasisht) so that she can usurp (what else) his immense wealth. One daughter is with each parent absolutely unaware that the other is alive. Then in the true tradition of movies with twins, coming down the ages in movies like ‘Parent Trap’ ‘Do Kaliyaan’ ‘Pyar Ke Kaabil’ (this was also a Rishi Kapoor movie) ‘Pyar ke do Pal’ etc., the girls switch places once they discover each other and work towards reuniting the parents. The three Bollywood movies that I mentioned had twins in the age bracket of 7-12 years of age. “KKKM” had twins who were older so that brought in a love-story too for one of the girls and the other one helped in setting things right so that the marriage can happen. Now the love interest of Tina (one of the twins, the other being Sweety) was played by Sunil Shetty (he changed his spelling to Suniel Shetty in 2014 for numerological reasons).

Sunil is one actor who has been around since the ’90s, his debut being ” Balwaan”(1982) opposite the late Divya Bharati. His movies of the ’90s were primarily action oriented and with the turn of the century he found success in multi-starrer movies of various genres including the mad-cap comedy movies “Hera Pheri”, “Phir Hera Pheri”, “Awara Paagal Deewana”, “One Two Three”, “De Dana Dan” etc where his teaming with Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar were well received. “Mohra” was an action packed movie of this trio in the ’90s, meaning the new century saw everyone in new avatars. He even played the traditional bad character in Farah Khan’s “Main Hoon Na” in 2004. He is a cricket lover (which Indian isn’t) and is the captain of the Mumbai Heroes in the Celebrity Cricket League. He belongs to a family which is into the restaurant business and he has various other business interests including film production. His daughter Athiya has also made her debut in Bollywood in 2015. His son is also on his way to becoming an actor.

I have always felt that Sunil Shetty has been lucky with some really romantic songs picturised on him. Can anyone forget “tum dil ki dhadkan mein rehte ho”. For a long time I had not seen “Dhadkan” from which that song was and always thought that he was the protagonist. It was later that I discovered that he was playing a jilted lover who tries to reunite with his girlfriend even after she is married; his character was neither good nor bad but somewhere in between and he had the best song of the movie. He won the Filmfare Best villain award for this portrayal.

I also noticed that “main tumhe bhool jaoon yeh ho nahin sakta. Aur tum mujhe bhool jaao yeh main hone nahin doonga” was previously uttered by Pooja Bedi to Naseerudin Shah in the 1993 release “Lootere” (also a Dharmesh Darshan directorial). But this same https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hC0K2NMEMA is remembered as Sunil Shetty’s; something like Amitabh’s various dialogues down the years. By the way, “Dhadkan” was also by Dharmesh Darshan and he has written the dialogues of both the movies. That should explain why the statement was repeated.

Now today’s song has Sunil taking lessons from Rishi Kapoor on how to win back the affection of his ‘rootha’ pyar (i.e. appeasing the lover). This was a nice father-in-law son-in-law jodi 😉 This song is in the vocals of Kumar Sanu for both Rishi and Sunil. The female playback is by Alka Yagnik for Kajol and even Rati hums a line in the same voice later in the movie. And it is surprising (for me atleast) that this soft number is composed by Anu Malik and written by Sameer. Some parts of the song has an old times feel to it.

No prizes for guessing my sudden interest in Sunil Shetty. He turns 59 today and here is wishing him all the best for the future.

Blog Day : 4135 Post No. : 15294

Today (13 november 2019) is the birthday of Juhi Chaawla (DoB 13 november 1967). Juhi Chawla, alongwith the likes of Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Jayaprada etc was from my generation viz born in 1960s). 🙂

Indian actresses holding their own in inernational beauty pageants and they going on to become popular matinee idols was not all that common those days. Juhi Chawla became Femina Miss India in 1984. She then participated in Miss Universe competition, winning the best costume award there.

Though she did not win the Miss Universe title or even finish among runners ups, it is interesrting to note that she was perhaps the most successful among all Miss Universe contestents of that year. While most other contestents did not have any reat careers, Juhi Chawla had a very successful movie career beginning from 1986, when se made her debut with “Sultanat”(1986).

“Qayamat Se qayamat Tak”(1988) launched her (and Aamir Khan) in Hindi movies.

1990s was the prime decade for Juhi Chawla. when she, alongwith Madhuri Dixit ruled the roost as the leading lady in Hindi movies.
Nowa days, she is still active, not in movies but in IPL, as co owner of Kolkata Night Riders.

Whenever I think of Juhi Chawla, the first movie that comes to my mind is “Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke”(1993).

I have watched this movie. But now I cannot recall where I watched the movie. I was posted in Purna (Maharashtra) during those days. Purna had no movie halls. Going to Nanded or Parbhani to watch movies during weekends used to be my modus operandi. Did I watch this movie in one of these two places, or did I watch the movie somewhere else (like say Secunderabad) I am not sure now. It happens with growing age. I (alongwith the birthday girl) have become older by 26 years. 🙂

I loved the movie. Both lead actors were in my age group, making it easy for me to identify with their characters. 🙂

Three songs from this movie have been covered. The third song from the song was covered exactly two years ago for the same occasion, viz Juhi Chawla’s birthday.

Here is another song from the same movie (Fourth out of six), to celebrate another birthday of Juhi Chawla. The song is sunng by Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Nadeem Shrawan.

The song is picturised on Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan, who imagine themselves falling in love with each other, while the two kids (playing Aamir Khan’s nephew nd niece) have no clue.

We wish Juhi Chawla a very happy birthday and many happy returns of the day.

My Railway related reminiscences- 3
——————————————————————————————

In my first article in the series, I discussed my first posting at Secunderabad. In my second articles, I went back into the past and discussed my probation days, including my stay at Vadodara.

In this third episode, I go back to the future ! Here I discuss my second posting.

My first posting was perhaps in the best place in the Railway zone of South Central Railway. I was posted in the capital city. I stayed near Secunderabad Railway station and I got a Railway quarter there. A capital city has so many attractions as well as opportunities. Those were the days when “computer” was a big buzz word. We had computer coaching institutes mushrooming all over India. A typical computer course taught DOS, wordstar, Lotus 123 and dbase3 . Does it ring any bells with some readers ? 🙂

A government employee is supposed to take permission if he/she wants to study in any course while in government service, with the undertaking that his study would not affect his performance in his/her job. I duly took this permission and began to attend one such course in evening.

My boss in my work place was an old fashioned conservative man. Same was the case with my bosses at the Headquarter. One standard advise that I would be given by them was – “concentrate on learning your job instead of learning about computers.” They did not share my “vision” that computers are a big productivity tools and they would play an important role in our lives in future.

My HQ bosses decided that the facilities at the capital city were harmful for me and so they decided to post me to a place where such facilities were non existent.

They identified a place that was poles apart when compared with Secunderabad. It was called Purna, in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. I was posted there.

This news was naturally a setback for me. But there was not much one could do about it. This place was a junction station and it had MG lines.I took a night train called Kacheguda Ajmer express (the most prestigious train in the section). The train started at night from Secunderabad and arrived Purna after midnight at around 4 AM or so.

In Secunderabad, I was a small fish in a big ocean as far as Railways set up was concerned, but I was going to be a big fish in a small pond like Purna. There I was being posted as the incharge of all Mechanical Engineering activities of Railways in and around Purna. My beat covered places up to Manmad (360 km to west), Khandwa (405 km to north), Adilabad (242 km to east) and Nizamabad (150 km to South East). All four places were in different directions and were located in three different states. When I think about it, the area under my jurisdiction was larger than the entire Railway system in some small countries. All this was MG section.

I arrived Purna Railway station at the early hours. Since I was going to be the boss of all I surveyed, people had arrived at the station to receive me. People unfamiliar to me always had difficulty identifying me. I got down from the station and stated looking for people who may have arrived to receive me. Likewise those who had arrived to receive me were lookng for someone who should look like a boss to them. Finally we managed to locate each other. They took me to Railway Officers Guest House, a small two room guest house. One room was booked for me and this room was going to be my place of stay till I got my regular accomodation.

Most people travel in style, carrying large number of suitcases which they have great difficulty fitting inside their train berth and they then secure their suitcases under lock and key. I on the other hand would travel with very modest looking luggage, typically a bag, and a jhola, and sometimes a suitcase. I would shove them under my train berth. No securing them under lock. In fact even my suitcase would not be locked if I could help it. I secured my suitcase only to avoid the embarrasment of an unlocked suitcase getting open and all its content falling out. And my luggage never got stolen despite lying all unsecured !

The modestness of my luggage was one of the reasons why unfamiliar people coming to receive me at the station would be unable to locate me at first glance. 🙂 Once my luggage was kept at the rest house, naturally it would remain all unlocked.

The small rest house had very small number of staff. Cleaning and dusting of the rooms was done by a lady. Her small child would accompany her. The door of the room would remain open all the time.

In the morning I went to my work place. This place was a steam loco shed, located towards south of the Purna Railway station. In its prime, this loco shed had over 60 MG steam locomotives. The number had come down a good deal.

The office was located on the first floor of a old fashioned British Style building. My chamber was quite large and spacious vis a vis the small chamber that I had in my previous place of posting. There were hundreds of staff in the office. People there still complained about there being less number of staff. 🙂

A few months later, my top boss (Chief Mechanical Engineer, based at Secunderabad ) paid a visit to Purna. During the course of his “inspection” of the place, he enquired- “how many clerks are there in the shed ?”.

The reply was “The work has reduced drastically, and so has the number of clerks. Now we have ONLY 40 clerks.”

“ONLY 40 clerks. My office at Secunderabad dealing with entire zone only has 39 clerks !”- the Chief Mechanical Engineer exclaimed !

Though I joined at Purna, my heart was still at Secunderabad and I would try to go back to Secunderabad at weekends and holidays, much to the chagrin of my immediate boss. I would leave for Secunderabad on friday and arrive back on Monday morning.

Once I went to Secunderabad on weekend and arrived back on monday morning. While at Secunderabad, I bought sweets, with the intention of consuming them at leisure in Purna. As usual, my luggage remained unlocked in my room.

When I came back to my room in the evening, I found that out of 20 pieces of sweet, only one piece remained in the bag where I had kept the sweet packet. The cleaning lady and her young son were looking very worried. I realised that the small kid had opened the box, and seeing the sweets, he kept eating the pieces and her indulgent mother could not prevent him in time. Now both of them were very worried.

I looked at the matter from the point of view of the kid and decided that it was alright. I behaved as if nothing happened. The mother and child waited till the morning to see my reaction. I showed no reaction and both of them were mightily relieved. It must have been an unexpected big lucky break for them. I could notice that they were silently thankful to me from the core of their hearts.

With time, I stopped going to Secunderabad at weekends. Instead, I would go to the nearly towns in the first half and be back by night. There was Parbhani (30 km to the north) and Nanded (30 km to the south) from Purna. These two district places had may be 4-5 movie halls each. I would visit one of these places during weekends, watch a movie and would come back to Purna by night.

All this journey was by train, of course. On one such occasion, I had gone to Parbhani. I watched some movie and then boarded the evening train coming towards Purna. The middle aged person seated opposite me in the first class coach was a PWD engineer in Maharashtra Government. He was coming back to his Nanded residence after attending some meeting at Aurangabad. I got introduced to him. He told me “kabhi koi kaam ho to bataana. Indian ke Home minister S B Chawhan ka main family friend hoon.” He also gave me his home address of Nanded.

I got down at Purna.

I was a “different” kind of Railway officer. I believed in things like honesty, fairplay etc. My immediate boss (based at Secunderabad), on the other hand was an archtypical Government official who believed in sucking up to the boss as the easy and only way of success. And he expected me to do the same. There were occassions when “failures” would take place and he would ask me to suspend someone. I would carry out my investigation into the failure and would found that the person required to be suspended was innocent. So I would refuse to suspend the innocent man.

This happened on quite a few occasions. He at his level would tell the division boss”(DRM)- “driver was responsible for late start of train. I have asked my Purna officer to suspend the driver.” I would investigate the matter and I would find that the driver was innocent.

The boss looked for opportunity to get his own back. One usual opportunity was to write adversely about my performance in my annual confidential report. I was an unusual kind of person who did not give a damn and I felt that spoiling my ACR was a non issue. He got his opportunity to actually hurt me. I wanted to take leave because my parents were calling me. It is not difficult for people to guess the probable reason. 😉 I foolishly informed my boss of the reason why I wanted leave. So he got a great opportunity to harass me. It is not possible to give you leave right now. But you will be given leave next month. He would tell me. I would believe him and ask for leave the next month. Then also he would say the same thing. This went on for three months and by the time it was clear to one and all that my boss was using this opportunity to harass me.

I felt very low when I was denied leave for the third time. I felt helpless. Then I remembered the Nanded based man. I went to Nanded and met him. I asked him to help. He was of course taken aback. He was no doubt a family friend of Indian home minister and a school mate of his son but what he had told me in the train may have been an exaggeration of his influence. In any case, meeting with him and talking with him served as some balm and gave me some mental relief.

A few weeks later, I received a telegram- “father serious, come home immediately.” I , alongwith my staff were naturally aghast, my supervisor (Loco Foreman) raised hell with the division headquarter and arranged for my leave on urgent basis. I was actually quite worried till I reached home and I was relieved to know that my father was alright. It was the usual time tested way of securing leave if the proper way of obtaining leave failed.

This episode taught me a valuable lesson that I tell everyone to follow. You should never tell others (especially your boss) about your “problems” and expect him to sympathise with you. Your vulnerabilities will be used against you. You should give the impression that you have no problems whatsoever. I have followed this lesson after this experience. I have rarely asked for any leave during the last 20 years of my service. And I tell everyone that I am happy wherever I am posted. And whatever I state happens to be the truth as well.

The movie that I had watched at Parbhani that evening (when I met that PWD Engineer) may have been either “Daamini” (1993) or “Dil Aashna Hai”(1992) or some other movie. I am not sure now. Let me assume that it was “Daamini” (1993).

This movie was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It had Rishi Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Sunny Deol, Amrish Puri, Tinu Anand, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Anjan Srivastava, Rohini Hattangadi, Aamir Khan, K K Raina, Paresh Rawal, Sulbha Arya, Vijayendra Ghatge, Viju Khote, Achyut Potdar, Asha Sharma etc in it.

The movie had five songs. Here is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog.

This song is sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Nadeem Shrawan.

The song is picturised on Rishi Kapoor and Meenakshi Sheshadri.

With this song, “Daamini”(1993) makes its debut in the blog.

Hullo to all Atulites

Today’s birthday girl was a Miss India winner in the year when my family got a TV for the first time ever. Prior to that whatever I have seen on TV (read Doordarshan) was either in other people’s houses or my chachu’s home. (As I have previously mentioned on many occasions. Those days nobody minded other people’s kids or adults too for that matter, coming in to see TV) I remember having got used to seeing the live relay of the Republic day parades, Filmfare Awards Nites, test matches, Wimbledon and opening ceremonies of Olympics or Asiad etc. They had a different charm to them specially when there would be no repeat telecasts and we used to either wake up early or sit up late to see live relays of overseas events.
