#The Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
———————————————————————

In this post I present a wonderful qawwaali sung by Yusuf Azaad and Party.  This qawwali is from the 1966 movie ‘Jaadu’. The film was directed by B Gupta for Fine Art Pictures, Bombay. It was a ‘fantasy’ genre film.

The star cast included Ranjan, Chitra, Helen, Sundar, Randhir, Rajan Haksar, Shivraj, Habib, Pal Sharma, Lakshamichhaya, Jeewankala, BM Vyas and others.

This movie has six songs and as many as four lyricists wrote the songs for this movie. However HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) mentions the lyricist name for two individual songs only. Here is the list of songs this movie has.

Only the audio of this song is available. Lyrics for the today’s song are by Prem Warbartani and music is composed by Bulo C. Rani.

This is the 17300th post on this blog.

Blog Day :

5279 Post No. : 17300

What is going on today? I am sure this question is worrying the minds of quite a few if not many or all regulars of this blog. Atul ji seems to be in a big hurry today. Seven posts already since his first good morning call at 5 am. Aha, so getting to the century number it seems. Yeah, ok, that’s it, he wants to complete the century, and make the century post today. But why? What is the tearing need? Is there a birthday not known to anybody? Is it a special day for someone on the bandwagon or in the industry? The anniversary page has no listing for today.

So yes, a mystery has been created by today’s blog activism. Already 7 songs on the board, and of course, the century strike is still to come. Well, here now. 😀

Ok so let me reveal the story in the background. This mystery scramble started less than 24 hours ago. About 5 days back, Atul ji and I exchanged some messages and decided that this century milestone will be an Asha Bhosle special. Some very interesting numbers are co-inciding. So we agreed to search and locate some special and rare song for this event. It took me about day to zero in on the song. I told Atul ji about it, and he agreed. So we planned to make the century post with this song.

So far, we were not in a scramble. Taking it easy, one or two posts a day, maybe get to the century milestone by 5th Jan or so. That suddenly changed last evening. Around 6.40, I got a message from Atul ji. He asked me whether we can make the century post tomorrow, i.e. today, 31st December. And he also shared the reason. As soon as I heard that, I was excited too. We agreed for the scramble, and the scramble happened.

Okay, okay – sorry for the long prelude. I will explain. First, the Asha Bhosle angle. We are coinciding two century milestones for her with this post. I wonder if the regulars have noticed that we have not be posting any Asha Bhosle songs for the past few days. Well, the reason is that Asha ji is at 2999th song on this blog, before this one. So this becomes her 3000th song being showcased here.

Ah, but wait, there is more. Asha ji is also at 1499th solo song with us. So this is now her 1500th solo on the blog. That makes today’s post a dual century milestone for her.

Before her, the two stalwart singers who have crossed these milestones are of course Lata ji and Rafi Sb.  Lata ji is currently at 3829 songs overall, and 2479 solos. Rafi sb is at the second place with 3222 songs overall and 1511 solos.

Now coming to the date, and the reason for the scramble. This is a piece of co-incidental information that Atul ji dug out yesterday. Most likely he was looking at the ten year challenge data for the BTYC 2022 series. So all it takes to guess this angle is to look at the songs posted ten years ago on 31st December 1912. The last song of that day, the New Year’s Eve of 2012, was the 7300th song on the blog. And so now, I am sure the numbers will fall in place in the minds.

Exactly ten years ago, were exactly ten thousand songs before this post. Ten years – ten thousand songs, that is a very telling achievement. Just for comparison, let’s see what came before that. From 19th July, 2008 to 31st December 2012, it is a few days less than 4 and a half years. In that period, we clocked 7300 posts. OK, so the comparison is nowhere balanced. The first 4.5 years come at an average of 1622 songs per year. And the next ten years come at an average if 1000 songs per year. That is quite a difference, which portrays the drop in the pace of posting over the years.

But in my mind, there is another very crucial observation to be made. Just in the fact of sustenance. In the known world of online blogging and entertainment and music, our blog most likely stands out as being the most consistent, the most sustained and the most continuing presence online – among the blogs that are run and managed by an individual or a small group. Yes there are other blogs that continue to thrive and continue to be regular, but they are mostly with corporate or external support and sponsorship. I am sure we all are aware of many blogs related to Indian Cinema and Hindi film songs, that we have visited over the years, but then with time, majority of them have lost steam, or slowed down. There is definitely a fatigue factor associated with this activity too. Sustaining the effort to continue is a big factor. And then, to ensure this sustenance on a day to day basis – I am confident to claim that our blog is without a peer across the wide internet.

So that is the story behind the eight posts that have been pulled together at a scramble within less than 24 hours.

Another coincidence I would like to mention here. Asha ji also figures in the 7300th post ten years ago. The song in that post is “Mohabbat Ka Haath Jawaani Ka Palla” from the 1958 film ‘Howrah Bridge’. The song is a duet by Rafi Sb and Asha ji. As noted in that post, that was the 300th duet song of this pair. Before this we were not noting and announcing century milestones for duet songs. It started with the post 7300.

And so, Asha ji then a centurion, and today too, Asha ji is a centurion.

Coming to the song in this post today. When Atul ji had sent me a query about some very special song of Asha ji for this milestone post, my mind went to this song, and for some very good reasons.

The song itself is very obscure and a rare discovery. As are many of the creations of the music director Sajjad Husain. Yes, the music for today’s song is from the mind of this genius music director, who was not given his due by the industry. The reasons can be discussed and debated, but the quality and the composition of his music cannot be. Par excellence is what comes to mind when we talk of this maverick music director.

The film is ‘Mera Shikar’ from 1973. After his 1963 venture with ‘Rustom Sohrab’, he was lost in the mists of forgotten anonymity for all of ten years. Then we see his name in this obscure and less heard of film that comes in 1973. An then it also disappears without a splash. Other than the fact that it is recorded in the Censor Board registers, and on account of that, it also appears in the Geet Kosh, no one had heard of or mentioned this film for many decades. With the coming of the internet, as access to many obscure things became easier, the aficionados started searching for lost and obscure songs of lesser heard music directors and singers and lyricists.

The difficulty with this film is that a. no gramophone records at all were made and b. the film itself is not available.

The songs of this film were presumed lost for a long time. And then they were discovered. On a spool tape. So now at least the songs are available, albeit it has been a difficult and anonymous journey.

A total of three songs are listed and identified for this film. One of the songs, in the voice of Rafi Sb, is already showcased on our blog – “Teri Mehfil Mein Aaye Hain”. This song was posted more than eleven years ago on 17th June, 2011.  The other two songs have not become available online, although they have been with private collectors for some time now. I first got these songs from my dear friend Girdhari Lal ji of Jodhpur. Then later, these songs also came to me once again thru another dear friend, Zafar Shah of Delhi. When the discussion for this post started, and my mind came to this song, I checked with Zafar Bhai, and he indicated that this song is already uploaded by him on his YouTube channel about six months ago. And so we have this song now available, to be played today as the 3000th song and 1500th solo song of Asha ji.

A vintage Sajjad creation, this song has such an endearing and yet intriguing melody. The verse lines are short and Sajjad Sb has knitted them into his music very beautifully. When we agreed to do this song for this post, I have since then heard this song repeatedly tens of times. And I am not getting tired of listening to it again and again. The rhythm and the arrangements are simply enchanting.

And then of course, the rendition by Asha ji. All I can say is – just listen to the song. And I think you will be bowled over, as I am.

The lyricist – Shakeel Nomani (or Numani) is once again a lesser known personality in the film world. He was a writer and wrote in newspapers and magazines in Urdu, Hindi and English. His name appears as the songwriter in a few films in 1950s and 60s. He wrote all the songs for four films – ‘Panchaayat’ (1958), ‘State Express’ (1961), ‘Daku Maan Singh’ (1971) and ‘Mera Shikar’ (1973). In addition he has written songs in ones and twos for the following films – ‘Sair e Paristan’(1958), ‘Lady Robinhood’ (1959), ‘Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere’ (1960), ‘Tu Nahin Aur Sahi’ (1960), ‘Flight To Assam’ (1961), ‘Reporter Raju’ (1962), and ‘Magic Carpet’ (1964). Besides writing songs, he has also appeared as an actor in about 20 films. Our blog carries 16 songs already of this lesser known writer.

Shifting gears again – it is the closing hours of the year 2022. Tomorrow will be a new day and the beginning of a New Year. For some time now, I have wondered occasionally, what does a New Year mean. As the day dawns and the sun rises, it will be a day no different than today, or any other day that we have lived through. And when we talk of New Year, there are so many occasions during the 12 months that New Year is celebrated by different societies, different groups of people on different dates. Any way, apologies, I will not continue with my tangential musings.

It is a block time of 12 months that get a new number tomorrow. Different thoughts and different people will associate different expectations and measures and resolutions and plans with this next block of 12 months. And so, wishing all good luck and happiness with all their expectations and plans in the coming year. Also wishing good health to everybody, and a contented peace of mind to go along with it.

Let’s bring on 2023.

Listen to the mesmerizing sounds of the mandolin play, as only one master of mandolin could play. That is Sajjad Husain. Listen to lilting rendition by Asha ji, as she tells about expectations and desires that rise in the mind when one is in love with another. . .

teri chaahat mein jeeyen
teri hasrat mein maren
hai ye armaan. . .

Listen to this wonderful creation – and wonder sometimes, why was this master musician always relegated to the sidelines.

Amen.

Today, 25th July is the 24th anniversary of the passing away of GS Kohli, one of the most talented musician and music director in Hindi cinema’s Golden age.

Gursharan Singh Kohli was born in 1928. As a child and young man, he learnt to play dholak and many other musical instruments. He was just 24 years when he started working with the famous music director OP Nayar, as his assistant. He continued to be Nayar Sb’s assistant music director till the end of 1960s, even though he had started his own career as an independent music director with the film ‘Lambe Haath’ in 1960.

He went on to create wonderful music for films like ‘Shikari’ (1963), ‘Adventures of Robin Hood’ (1965) and ‘Namaste ji’ (also 1965). Despite scoring some of the most popular hit songs of the 1960s, his career remained confined to B and C grade cinema. His last film as an independent music director was ‘Jaalsaaz’ in 1969.

Today we present this enchanting cabaret song from the 1966 film ‘Do Matwaale’. The song is penned by Farooq Qaiser and is sung by Asha Bhosle. On screen, the song is performed by Helen, as a club dance song, in the inimitable way that only Helen can perform. Present in the scene also we can see the actress Malika, and two Sikh gentlemen, who actually are Randhawa and Madan Puri in disguise.

The lyrics of this song were sent in by Prakashchandra ji.

Another very enamoring dance number by Helen, who performs to the music of GS Kohli.

Blog Day : 3975 Post No. : 15061

Today, 6th June, is the birth anniversary of Rajinder Krishan, one of the most prolific songwriters in Hindi cinema. As I looked up the date of birth, I find that he was born in the year 1919. So that makes today, the 100th birth anniversary for him.

A career that spans four decades in the industry saw a prolific output from his pen – close to 1700 songs, and story/screenplays and dialogues for many films. He made his debut in 1947 – as a songwriter for ‘Zanjeer’ (1947) and as a screenplay writer for ‘Janta’ (1947). He passed away in 1987, completing 40 years of active writing work in films, although films carrying songs written by him continued to be released till the early 1990s.

The 1955 film ‘Teerandaaz’ was produced and directed by HS Rawail, under the banner of Roshni Pictures, Bombay. The cast of actors for this film is listed as Madhubala, Ajit, Kuldip Kaur, Jairaj, Gope, Sunder, Randhir, Yashodhara Katju, Ridku, Chandrashekhar, Bhagwan Sinha, Ravi, Pal Sharma, Krishna Varma, Kumud Tripathi, Ramlal, Madan Bhandari, Helen, Kammo, Mohna, and Chanchal.

The six songs in this film are all written by Rajinder Krishan. Music is composed by C Ramchandra. Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. One song of this film is already showcased here. This song is the second song of this film to take its place on our blog.

The song is a lilting melodious song, quite reminiscent of the golden era of music in Hindi films. I am hearing this song for the first time, as I prepare this post. What a lovely song, and what an enchanting rendition it is. The words of this song present an aspect of the philosophy of life – the search for a certain happiness in life that would be the true happiness. Some try to seek this solace in wine, but the poet says that happiness is not genuine – maybe the sip of the tipple from the eyes of the beloved would bring solace to the restless heart.

The more I listen to these words, the more this song becomes dear to me. I request our more knowledgeable readers and friends who may have seen this film, to please add more information about this film and the picturization of this song.

With this post, we also welcome back to the blog, our dear Nitin ji, after a long gap. We met at the luncheon gangout of Atulites at Sadanand ji’s place (in Bombay) on 3rd May. At that meeting, he had promised to become active once again. During the past four weeks or so, he has been resending lyrics of pending songs from the films of 1950s. From that, I have picked today’s lovely song, to celebrate the centenary celebration for Rajinder Krishan.

Song – Badi Bewafaa Hai, Udti Hawaa Hai (Teerandaaz) (1955) Singers – Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Rajinder Krishan, MD – C Ramchandra

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 9
———————————————————————

My last post on our blog has been sometime back. I have been meaning to write about this song which has a couple of rare occurrences in the Hindi Film and Music world and was waiting for an opportune moment.

Recently, I have been fighting my own battles on my health front, having been hospitalised for surgical and advanced interventional pain management procedures, more than a couple of times in the last one year. I have diabetes, which is under control, however it has caused neuropathy in both my feet causing severe pain with tingling and burning sensations. I would like to take this opportunity to create awareness amongst all the readers of this blog that diabetes can be very dangerous and draining and that one should take care of their feet. One’s feet bear the entire weight of one’s body but always fail to get the attention and good care, as with other parts of the body.

Well, coming back to today’s post. Late last month, we, the regular (and irregular) contributors of this blog were told by our beloved SudhirJi, that the blog was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its creation and that song posts were expected from all the contributors. However, as hard as I tried, I couldn’t stick up to the deadline of sending in our contributions. However, Sudhir Ji would not relent and sent me another request to send in my post. This made me very embarrassed and I made a promise to myself that come what may, I will write my post and send it today, three days after my second extended deadline.

My association with this blog actually started around two years after I started my Facebook group – Rare Hindi Film Songs in 2010. In searching for old and rare songs to post, I would often visit the blog and later I came to know that even Atul Ji, the creator of this blog was a member and a regular visitor of my group. However, it took me almost 4 years to write my first post – for the song “Chup Chup Chup Kyon Baithe Ho” – and send it to Atul Ji for moderation and posting. Since then, I have been sending in my posts in bursts, start and stop.

Till date I have just posted about 20 odd songs, but I feel so much drawn to the Atulites group that I feel I have come to my home group amongst these various people across the world, who share similar passion and views. In particular, Avinash Ji and Sudhir Ji seem to like my kind of songs from movies of the 70s and early eighties, not that others are not encouraging.

My heartiest congratulations to Atul Ji, ASAD, Atulites and all the people who love HFM, on the 10th anniversary of this endeavour !!!

Now coming to today’s song. As I have mentioned above, this is a special song for me as it has a few rare characteristics associated with it, in the HFM world and also since it is quite a rare song. It is from the Pran, Navin Nischol and Rekha starrer ‘Dharma’ released in 1973. Two other songs from this movie have been posted earlier on the blog. For those who haven’t seen the movie or have forgotten it, the plot summary can be read here on IMDB.

Now, coming to this song with ‘Two Rare Occurrences’ for a Hindi movie!

It is an almost eight minute long song, starting with a straight cut and paste of the song “Aur Mera Naam Hai Jameela” sung by Lata Mangeshkar from the 1967 film ‘Night in London’ (composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and penned by Anand Bakshi). In both the films, Helen is the dancer performing this song on screen. But of course, the choreography is different in the two films. In this clip from ‘Dharma’, only one stanza of the original song from ‘Night In London’ is included and it is about 2 minutes in duration. Well this is one rare thing.

The second and most important rare thing about this song is that after Helen’s initial lip syncing to this cut-paste song, the actual song, sung by Asha Bhosle, is lip synced by four of the best cabaret dancers of that era. Of course after the Numero Uno – Helen – who’s in the first part. The subsequent segments are performed by Faryal, Sonia Sahani, Jayashree T and Bindu.

The video opens with Helen beginning the dance with some male dancers. The music has already begun. We can also see Ramesh Deo with Asit Sen, who is watching the dance wide-eyed and lecherously. They go to another dance bar and Faryal starts her part followed by Sonia Sahni performing in the third bar. In the fourth bar, Jayashree T is performing bhangra. In the last bar, they do drugs with drinks while Bindu is performing. In this film, Madan Puri and Ramesh Deo are together shown to cheat rich men by taking them to clubs and tempting them with wine and women. The song shows Seth Garib Das (Asit Sen) is being trapped by them and this cabaret number is organized for him.

I hope all of you like the interesting facts of this song as well as the song. Please comment.

Song – Arey Saaqi Jo Kal Ki Hai Bachi Baaki (Dharma) (1973) Singer – Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Omi, Lyrics – Verma Malik, MD – Sonik-Omi

Lyrics

yaar ki nigaahon me
pyaar ki mehfil me
saahib main rahti hoon
aashiqon ke dil me
aur mera naam hai jameela

har ek dil ko dhadakne ki aadat huyi
main jis gali se bhi guzri qayamat huyi
log nazren bichaane lage
log nazren bichaane lage
haal dil ka sunaane lage
yaar ki nigaahon me
pyaar ki mehfil me
saahib main rahti hoon
aashiqon ke dil me
aur mera naam hai jameela

arey saaqi
jo kal ki hai
bachi baaki
usi ka daur chal jaaye
arey saaqi
jo kal ki hai
bachi baaki
usi ka daur chal jaaye
utha parda
dekh jalwa
ke sheeshe mein
jawani ab utar jaaye
arey saaqi

rani hoon main raat ki
tu hai galiyon ka raaja
aa
rani hoon main raat ki
tu hai galiyon ka raaja
soyi hui jawani ko
tu chhoo ke zara jaga ja
meri nigahein, aadayen ye baahein bulaayen
veeraa. . .
hahh veeraa. . .aah
la laa la laa la laa la laa

o ho
machal ke pee
sambhal ke pee
paimane mein maikhaana doob na jaaye
machal ke pee
sambhal ke pee
paimane mein maikhaana doob na jaaye
arey saaqi

dil le ja nishaani
badi meherbaani
haaye dil le jaa nishaani
badi meherbaani
teri jiyegi
teri jiyegi jug jug jawaani
o mere dil jaani
teri jiyegi jug jug jawaani
ho mere dil jaani
haaye
ve sun sajna
ve sun makhna
tu yaad rakhna
ke yaari toot na jaaye
ve sun sajna
ve sun makhna
tu yaad rakhna
ke yaari toot na jaaye
ve sun sajana..aa..aa. . .

dum mein dum hai to dum laga
duniya kya hai nasha hi nasha
aasmaan ke baadal to
kuchh bhi nahin
mazaa to tab hai ke
zameen pe baadal bana
mere humdum
raat hai kam
ke baaton mein
ye saari
raat na jaaye
mere humdum. . .

Blog Day : 3604 Post No. : 14384

Today is the fifteenth remembrance day for Anil Biswas, one of the pioneering music directors of film industry in India. He passed away on 31st May in New Delhi, in the year 2003. With his active years in the film industry (from 1935 to 1965) behind him, he had moved to Delhi by mid 1960s. Thereafter, he worked with the All India Radio in New Delhi, and was also associated with JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University).

As I am checking his filmography and the list of songs, as per the Geet Kosh, I come across a very interesting statistic. As per Geet Kosh, during his active years in the film industry from 1935 to 1965, he composed music for 82 films, of which three are unreleased films with songs available. The total of songs in these films comes to around 715.

Then I counted his body of work in the first six years of his career in films, i.e. from 1935 to 1940. Amazing to find out that in these first six years he has composed music for 25 films, logging in approximately 220 songs. This works out to be a tad over 30%, both in terms of number of films and total no. of songs composed. So in the first six years of his career (which is 20% of his career), he had already accomplished 30% of all the work that he would do for Hindi films. And now to the sad part of these numbers. Of these 220 songs, more than half i.e. 137 were not even released on gramophone records (as per Geet Kosh listings). Of the remaining shortlisted songs, just about 80 to 85 songs are available in public domain. This last number is as per my knowledge of available songs within the known circle of collectors – this number could be more.

A large part of this work from those six earliest years remains unknown and unheard – a sad commentary on the state of affairs of archiving and preservation efforts in the industry.

In remembrance of this doyen of music directors, I present this rare song today, which has an important distinction. As per the Geet Kosh listings, this most likely the earliest song that he has sung, under his own music direction, that is available. The Geet Kosh lists one earlier solo credited to him as a singer, for the film ‘Dharam Ki Devi’ of 1935, which was probably never released on gramophone record. This song from the 1936 film ‘Piya Ki Jogan’ apparently is his earliest recorded song that is available in public domain. It is a duet in which the accompanying voice is of Sardar Akhtar.

The film ‘Piya Ki Jogan’ was produced under the banner of Golden Eagle Movietone, which, very interestingly, is listed as being based in Sindh. The region of Sindh could mean Karachi, but I am not sure about it. The film was directed by Heeren Bose. The cast of actors is listed as Sardar Akhtar, Pramod Chandra, Krishna Kumari, Merwan Irani, D Manik, Ashalata, Vasu HK, Sheila, Agha Jaan, Bannerjee, Niranjan Singh, Mehar Banu, and Anil Biswas himself. Now this throws up interesting question whether Anil Da is singing for himself on screen. The year is 1936, and the playback mechanism is just beginning to get a foothold in the industry. He could be singing for himself, since he is listed as an actor. Or he could be singing for someone else – being the last name in the listing generally implies a role with less importance. Once again, I cannot be sure.

Another interesting tidbit here. The cast of actors also contains the name Ashalata. This could well be the first film that they worked on together. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to please comment on this observation.

The lyricist credits are listed as Munshi Zahiruddin, Niranjan Singh, and Meerabai (one of the songs in the film is a bhajan credited to her). The uploader of this song on YT, Shri Shalin Bhatt, identifies Munshi Zahiruddin as the writer of this song.

The song itself does not have too many wordy lines. There are passages of laughter and pauses. The song appears to be an exchange between a lady and a gentleman, having some good time together. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to kindly add more information about this film and this song, if available.

With this rare and uniquely important song, the blog pays its homage to Anil Da, on this anniversary of his passing away.

[Auth Note: Some translations,
“sahn e baag” = open space, compound containing a garden
“abr e bahaar” = clouds of spring; or clouds of good season
“baadaah e khvaar” = one who drinks liquor]

Missing Films of 1960s – 72
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s film of the 1960s being introduced is ‘Badmaash’ from 1969.  A very obscure and unfamiliar film, that is known only by its presence in the Geet Kosh. But I was surprised when I checked out the cast. This film belongs to the Sheikh Mukhtar genre. His films may not be blockbusters, but still they are known only because they are Sheikh Mukhtar films. Even so, this film is lesser known in comparison.

It is well known that Sheikh Mukhtar would be churning out films very regularly, but he never established a production house that sustained. Practically all his films are produced under different banners. This film is from the banner of Saras Chitra, Bombay and is directed by BJ Patel. The star cast of this film reads like Sheikh Mukhtar, Helen, Chandrashekhar, Padma, NA Ansari, Vishwa Mehra, Dalda, Shashimala, Satyen Kappu, Jilani, Chandrakala, Surya Kumar, Bhagwan, Rachna, Jayshree, Satish Vyas, Nawab, Jaswant, Ajeet, Abdul Sattar, Nanak, Motu, and Nandini Desai. The regulars are all there – Chandrashekhar, Helen, NA Ansari. And then of course the lesser known regulars. A nearly new name for that era, which appears in this list is Satyen Kappu. We have known him from his character roles in films of 1970s and onward. On checking his filmography, we find that he makes his debut in this film, in all likelihood. I say it this way, because the available information for character artists is not very accurate. This is the earliest film in which his name is listed.

There are only four songs listed in the Geet Kosh, for this film. All the songs are from the pen of Anjaan. The music director is Avinash Vyas. A little surprising to read his name associated with this film. Not that he does not have other B/C grade films in his portfolio. But most of his films are either religious / mythological or fantasy / costume drama. ‘Badmaash’ seems to be his only stunt / crime drama film.

The singing voice is Krishna Kalle. As I have been reviewing the films of second half of 1960s, I find her name appear quite regularly in songs of B/C grade films of that era. This song seems to be a club/bar song, and the performer appears to be drunk herself. Given the cast of actors, it would seem that Helen is the female lead in this film, opposite to Chandrashekhar. It is possible that this song may be performed by her. Another possibility is Padma, a name that I think refers to Padma Khanna, who was also a leading dance item performer of that era. I request other knowledgeable friends and readers to please add more information about the film and its songs.

Rendering by Krishna Kalle is just too good. These types of songs were a monopoly of Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt – actually more of Asha Bhosle in that period of latter part of 1960s. With this song, one can see the potential that Krishna Kalle had to compete with Asha Bhosle.  But well, history is history. Listen and enjoy this definitive performance by her.

Song – Utha Palken Mila Nazren  (Badmaash) (1969) Singer – Krishna Kalle, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD – Avinash Vyas

Lyrics

utha palken
mila nazren
ye paimaane chhalakne de
utha palken
mila nazren
ye paimaane chhalakne de
behakta hai
agar ye dil
bura kya hai behakne de
utha palken
mila nazren

idhar to dekh
kaisi pyaas
machli hai nigaahon mein
idhar to dekh
kaisi pyaas
machli hai nigaahon mein
dhadakte dil ko le le
shokh baahon ki panaahon mein
mohabbat ki
nai khushboo
se ye saansen mehakne de
utha palken
ay
mila nazren

ye maana
saagar o meena ka
dilkash daur hota hai
ye maana
saagar o meena ka
dilkash daur hota hai
magar aankhon se peene ka
mazaa kuchh aur hota hai
haseen palkon
ke saaye mein
naye saagar khanakne de
utha palken
mila nazren
ye paimaane chhalakne de
behakta hai
agar ye dil
bura kya hai behakne de
utha palken
mila nazren

Missing Films of 1960s – 70
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Almost like a déjà-vu happening today.

The year is 1968, one more than the previous episode – we had the film ‘Jungle Ki Hoor’ from `1967 yesterday. Today, the film is ‘Lutera Aur Jaadugar’. The word ‘Jaam’ appears in the song title. And the word ‘tauba-aashiqan’ appears in the body of the song. Other similarities – well they go without saying.  A perfect gem of a song from an unknown film, composed by an equally obscure and unfamiliar music director – Suresh Kumar.

Suresh Kumar – a name that is not easily remembered as a music director. But on checking the Geet Kosh, we find that his outings in the field, in terms of films and songs is not trivial. We are talking here about a career that starts around early 1950s and continues well into the 1980s. Till 1980, the data available in GK, he as about sixty songs from 10 films to his credit as an independent solo music director. And then we also find out that he paired up with another music director M Talwar, and the two composed music under the duo name of Suresh-Talwar. As a duo there are another 80 odd songs from another additional 12 films. That certainly is not an ignorable size of body of work.

The film comes from the banner of Zubi Films, Bombay and is directed by D Raman. The cast of actors is listed as – Azaad, Nishi, Jagdeep, Tabassum, Mohan Choti, Rajan Haksar, Sherry, Meenakshi, Heera Sawant, Ram Raseela, Noorjahan, Zeb Sultan, Bibi Bai, Ghulam Sabir, Jilani, Gopu, Luckyram, Prince Arjun, Nadir, Rajrani, and Praveen Bano. Reading this list, it is clear that this is a B/C grade stunt cum fantasy film.

Seven songs are listed for this film. Two songwriters – Yogesh and Anjaan. This song is from the pen of Yogesh. The song is apparently a twin dance song. The singing voices are of Krishna Kalle and Usha Khanna. Ah yes, the MD appearing as a singer for another MD. Plus another claim to rarity – a very rare combination of singing voices.

Listening to the song, the image comes to mind of two dancers on screen, dancing in a king’s court or in a pub. And possibly one of the on screen dancers may be Nishi herself. A typical ‘maikhaana’ song, done really well, I am sure you will enjoy this discovery.

Song – Jaam Bhar Bhar Ke Pila De Mere Saaqiya  (Lutera Aur Jaadugar) (1968) Singer – Krishna Kalle, Usha Khanna, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Suresh Kumar

Lyrics

jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya
mujhko deewaana bana de mere saaqiya
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya

berukhi se tumhari sitamgar
hamen kab tak shikaayat rahegi
dekh le le duaaen hamaari
teri mehfil salaamat rahegi
teri mehfil salaamat rahegi
oo oo oo oo
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya

haaye tauba-aashiqan baankpan ye
hum hain qurbaan teri adaa pe
jaam kab se hamaara hai khaali
bhar de bhar de zaraa muskuraa ke
bhar de bhar de zaraa muskuraa ke
oo oo oo oo
thodi aankhon ki mila de mere saaqiya
mujhko deewaana bana de mere saaqiya
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya
mujhko deewaana bana de mere saaqiya
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya. . .
