Missing Films of 1960s – 45
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
As I scanned the filmography of Nayyar Sb, presented by Atul ji in his late evening post yesterday, my eyes stopped with a jerk on seeing a ‘0’ in the decade of 1960s. Quick shift to the left and I find that the film is ‘The Killers’ from 1969. And the mind said ‘wow’ again – this film, and that too with Nayyar Sb’s music – how can that be an outsider still. Time to set the record right. So the immediate decision was to debut this film – immediately. 🙂
‘The Killers’ – is a kind of a multi starrer before its time. It brought together Sheikh Mukhtar, Dara Singh and Ajit – all stars in their own right of the genre of stunt / suspense / thriller films. Other players in the star cast are Helen (of course), Bela Bose, Leela Chitnis, Bhagwan, Jagdish Raj, Anwar Husain, Amar, Maruti, Savita, Sushma, Ram Lal, and Kundan etc. And yes, the alternate title of this film, now do not be surprised – ‘Hum Sab Qaatil Hain’, a la ‘Hum Sab Ustad Hain’ and ‘Hum Sab Chor Hain’. 😀 😀
The film is produced under the banner of Sangam Films, Bombay, and is directed by Maruti. The six songs in this film are shared between Aziz Kashmiri (2) and SH Bihari(4). This song is written by SH Bihari. Music – yes OP Nayyar Sb.
A wonderfully composed song, that immediately brings to memory, the similarly paced song – “Hum Ne To Dil Ko Aap Ke Kadmon Mein Rakh Diya”, sung by Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle for Nayyar Sb in the film ‘Mere Sanam’ (1965). The use of sitar is simply so exquisite.
On screen, the song has been performed so sensuously by Helen, as she showers her graces on to her beau, role played by Dara Singh. In the initial moments of the song, the gentleman seems spooked, watching the lady wearing a towel, and then getting ready. He has this bowled over astounded expression on his face – almost as if, if he was required to say something, then God help the director.
But all in all, a wonderful composition, and performed equally wonderfully on screen by Helen. This is not a dance song, but she has conducted herself extremely tastefully.
With this, the film ‘The Killers’ makes its debut on our blog. And enjoy this lovely song. And the Helen performance. 🙂

Song – Nazren Mila Ke Aap Ne Ehsaan Kar Diya (The Killers) (1969) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – SH Bihari, MD – OP Nayyar
Lyrics
hmmm hmmm hmmm
la la la la laaa lalla
hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm
nazren mila ke aapne ehsaan kar diya
nazren mila ke aapne ehsaan kar diya
phir se hamaare jeene ka samaan kar diya
mil ke hamen huzoor se
mehsoos ye hua
mil ke hamen huzoor se
mehsoos ye hua
duniya mein aur kuchh bhi nahin
pyaar ke siwa
sab kuchh wafaa ke naam pe
qurbaan kar diya
nazren mila ke aapne ehsaan kar diya
bechain thi hamaari nazar
aap ke bagair
bechain thi hamaari nazar
aap ke bagair
mushqil tha zindagi ka safar
aap ke bagair
baahon mein le ke aap ne
aasaan kar diya
nazren mila ke aapne ehsaan kar diya
phir se hamaare jeene ka samaan kar diya

I always thought it was necessary to have some degree of writing pedigree to claim to have the famed “writer’s block” problem but, if the last few days are any indication, apparently this affliction is not limited to the writing community.

Today (23 august) is the birthday of Saira Bano. Saira Bano made her debut in 1960s and when one thinks about it, her career was mainly confined to the decade of 1960s, with a few sporadic appearances in 1970s.

I thought that Saira Bano was the first “bold” heroine who had appeared in a bathroom song in a Bollywood movie. I was wrong. She was beaten in it by another actress by more than a decade.

C grade Bollywood movies on 1950s and 1960s failed to get registered in the minds of mainstream audience, but these movies certainly had some audience and they must have been making enough money to stay in business.

I have noticed that Bollywood movies have songs for almost all occasions. There are happy songs, there are sad songs, there are party songs, there are songs of loneliness. Then there are boat songs, rain songs, festival songs etc. In fact, I have discovered some fight songs, where the hero fights villains while singing.
